Alongside Tish is Jen Choate (Waves Early Interventionist), Staci Davis, Christy Webb, and John Lynch to chat about the Adult Services and Early Learning Departments at Waves. Tish offers a unique perspective to the full lifespan of support offered at Waves as her son currently receives developmental therapy from Jen through Waves Early Learning Program. Tish shares her experience in discovering she needed Early Intervention support and how Waves has supported Tish and her son. Jen also shares her experience in providing support for Tish's son and how through developmental therapy they have been able to witness growth over the year. The group discusses the importance of early intervention and then the continued support of in adulthood that is offered through Waves Adult Services. We learned about their event rental company which began in 2023 and continues to grow to this day. Originally in the music industry, Mackenzie first became familiar with Waves through our Brews & Grooves fundraising event where she sang for the event. Over time, however, it became obvious to Mackenzie and her husband that their passion for events would be the direction they would take in their career. The end of summer vacation is coming close for a lot of families, which makes it a perfect time for our Waves Early Interventionists Cheryl Vooris and Kate Harris to join this week's episode of WOA! It's only been one week, but it's really been 14 years, and Paul is calling: Microsoft and Qualcomm have finally made Windows 11 on Arm both viable and desirable. Nothing is perfect, but this platform is pretty incredible. Some notes from the past week: Mission Accomplished As a reminder, Paul finally got the Yoga Slim 7x last week and updated on app compatibility, hardware compatibility, gaming, and in-box AI experiences in time for WW - only found one non-working app, Google Drive. Then... More app and game compatibility testing. Since then, played a lot more DOOM (2016), ran into one issue that's surely WOA-related (note beta graphics driver, though) Video encoding performance: Snapdragon X vs Snapdragon X vs Core Ultra 9 H-series vs MacBook Air M3 Initial thoughts on battery life and then More thoughts on battery life. The Yoga Slim 9x and Surface Laptop both get about 10 hours of real-world battery life (so far), compared to 15 hours for the MacBook Air 15-inch M3. It's only been one week, but it's really been 14 years, and Paul is calling: Microsoft and Qualcomm have finally made Windows 11 on Arm both viable and desirable. Nothing is perfect, but this platform is pretty incredible. Where do you turn when your organization commits fraud, waste, or abuse? How do you cope with retaliation after you decide to speak up? Being a whistleblower is one of the most traumatic experiences in one's life. It can often lead people into a dark depression or even to consider suicide. Fortunately, resources are available, and trained professionals can assist should one decide to “blow the whistle.” My next guest is one of them. Ms. Garrick founded Whistleblowers of America (WoA) as a nonprofit in 2017, providing voluntary peer support to those suffering workplace trauma. She developed the Whistleblower Retaliation Checklist© (WRC) to identify negative psychosocial impacts on victimized employees and provide forensic testimony. Over the last few years, Professor Garrick has taught for the University of Southern California School of Social Work and has supervised interns from the University of West Florida. She is also the founder of the Workplace Promise Institute, which opened in Pensacola, FL, in 2021, the annual conference WoA hosts.Previously, she served as a US Army Officer and in executive positions at the American Legion and the Departments of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Defense (DoD) and with the House Committee on Veterans Affairs. Her areas of expertise include policy and program development for disabled veterans/wounded warriors, whistleblower mental health, suicide prevention, and organizational leadership development. She is a recognized public servant who has received awards from several distinguished organizations. She founded the FAR Group, which provides consultation to public and private organizations that need development, advocacy, and educational support.Ms. Garrick is a published author, media source, and international public speaker. She has also worked on projects in the former Soviet Union, for the US military in Germany and Afghanistan, and for the World Health Organization in Switzerland. She has been an invited speaker in the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Israel because of her co-authored book, The Psychosocial Impacts of Whistleblower Retaliation.She is a social work master's graduate from Temple University with additional training at Johns Hopkins and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.  She is a licensed social worker (LCSW-C) in MD. WOA has two celebrations to cover in this week's episode, with Waves' very own Matt "The Man" Moore celebrating his 34th birthday and Backlight Productions celebrating 10 years! The Executive Director of Backlight Productions, Melissa Smith, joins us and shares how Backlight has been offering opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to engage with the performing arts for 10 years now. This year they're putting on their biggest production yet, "Cinderella", with over 100 individuals performing and only half the time they usually have to put the show together. Matt talks about his own work on Cinderella as a dancer with 5 dance numbers throughout the play. Melissa and Matt have worked together on various shows for a while now and swap stories with WOA on their time together. Here to share her own memories with Matt, Waves Early Learning Program Director Gina Wilson joins the episode and tells us about her favorite birthday memory with Matt. Gina's son Eric Wilson has also been a part of Backlight Productions and speaks on how Backlight brought out an entirely new side of Eric after he joined the production company. If you've ever been overwhelmed with the idea of volunteering and figuring out how to get connected, this week WOA sheds some light on the topic! Special guests from the Workman Group, Eric and Katie Workman, share their perspectives on volunteering and why it's so important to the community. Eric and Katie are excellent examples of committing to helping their community, having volunteered with Waves in the past and continuing to set aside time for Waves. Eric and Katie have personally volunteered at John's home a part of Waves' Semi-Independent Living Program, helping John and his roommate William wherever assistance is needed. When it comes to giving back, Eric and Katie share that it doesn't have to mean giving money- giving any time at all to help those in need of support makes an amazing impact on the community. For the final episode of the season, WOA switches modes and becomes the movie review source you didn't know you needed. We have folks from the Fairview Day Program, Jimmy Parnell and Hannah Rose, come down to join hosts Matt Moore and Trent Denson. In addition, Waves Early Learning Program Director Regina Wilson and her son Eric Wilson, who is a part of the Waves Employment Program, join the episode. Everyone sits down and reviews the movie Champions, starring Woody Harrelson. Champions released this year and tells the story of a former minor-league basketball coach who is assigned a court order to manage a team of basketball players with intellectual disabilities. We couldn't think of a better team to review Champions than our Waves Adults who can offer an honest opinion on whether the film accurately portrayed the community of disabilities. Listen to Hannah, Jimmy, Eric, and Matt all give their reviews, sharing their favorite and least favorite things about the movie. Gina also offers her opinions having watched it from the perspective of a mother to a son with disabilities. She shares her hesitations and worries going into the film but ultimately loved the message and conclusion of the story (barring one exception). Trent goes over the plot of the film with the table and the whole crew decides the movie was a raving success!
