www.marktreichel.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-treichel/ The NCUA Appeal Process: A Complete Guide # NCUA Appeal Process with Mark Treichel## OverviewThis episode covers the formal appeal process at NCUA, detailing how credit unions can appeal examination findings and supervisory determinations.## Key Points About Initial Response to Examination Findings- Start with the examiner level - resolving issues at the lowest level is most time and cost-efficient- Common reasons for appeals include: - Factual errors not corrected - CAMEL code downgrades - Requirements that could negatively impact member service - Requirements affecting capital building or earnings - Requirements impacting liquidity control## What Can Be AppealedMaterial supervisory determinations that may significantly affect:- Capital- Earnings - Operating flexibility- Nature/level of supervisory oversightSpecifically includes:- Composite examination ratings of 3, 4, or 5- Loan loss reserve adequacy determinations- Classification of significant loans/assets- Federal consumer financial law compliance determinations- Certain waiver requests/additional authority applications## Appeal Process Timeline1. Initial Appeal to Regional Director - Must file within 30 days of examination - Regional Director has 30 days to respond2. Secondary Appeal Options (if Regional Director denies) - 30 days to appeal to either: - Office of Examination & Insurance, OR - Supervisory Review Committee (recommended path) - These bodies have 60 days to respond - Can request oral hearing with Supervisory Review Committee3. Final Appeal to NCUA Board - 30 days to file after previous denial - Board has 90 days to decide - May request oral hearing (not guaranteed)Total timeline can extend 8-12 months, especially if oral hearings are involved.## Important Considerations- Must follow each step sequentially - cannot skip levels- Component CAMEL ratings cannot be directly appealed, but arguments about components support composite rating appeals- Document resolutions are negotiable- Appeals create an administrative record- Partial victories possible at each level- Success likelihood typically increases at higher levels- "Tie goes to the runner" - burden of proof is on the credit union## ResourcesRelated regulations:- Part 746, Subpart A of NCUA regulations- Preamble to final rule provides important context## Contact InformationFor more information or consultation about appeals:- Connect with Mark Treichel on LinkedIn- Contact Credit Union Exam Solutions*Note: This episode expands on an earlier podcast about the regional appeal process featuring Todd Miller.*
Sir Gerard Brennan has been one of Australia's most important barristers and judges since World War II. As a judge, he made many significant contributions to Australian jurisprudence. The most consequential of these was the leading judgment in the High Court's decision in Mabo recognising the rights of occupation of Australia's indigenous peoples. A few short years later in the Wik case, Brennan CJ dissented from the Court's decision that native title had not been extinguished by grants of pastoral leases under Colonial and State legislation. The key to understanding the fundamental consistency of these two judgments lies in an appreciation of Brennan's fidelity to the constraints upon judicial decision making required by the constitutional separation of legislative and judicial power.About the speakerThe Honourable Patrick Keane AC KC is a graduate of the University of Queensland and Oxford University where he was awarded numerous academic prizes and accolades. He was admitted to the Queensland Bar in 1977, appointed Queen's Counsel in 1988 and was Solicitor-General for Queensland from 1992 to 2005. In 2003 His Honour was awarded the Centenary Medal in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession. He was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland Court of Appeal in 2005. The Hon Keane was appointed as the third Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia in 2010, and served thereafter as a justice of the High Court of Australia from 2013 until retirement in 2022. In 2023, he was appointed a Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong. View the lecture.Support the show

July 8, 1983. Winter Haven, Florida. 47-year old Nancy Drake is viciously attacked inside her church after being bludgeoned with a claw-toothed hammer during an apparent robbery. Nancy is left comatose, but when she wakes up, she has no memory of the incident. Suspicion turns towards Nancy's 45-year old husband, Thomas Drake, who took out a life insurance policy on her while conducting a secret affair with another woman. Thomas is charged with attempted murder and found guilty at trial, but shortly thereafter, Nancy claims that her memory has returned and she now recalls being attacked by another man. This leads to Thomas receiving a new trial, but he is found guilty a second time and remains incarcerated to this day. Did Thomas Drake attempt to bludgeon his wife to death with a hammer, or was someone else responsible? On this episode of “The Path Went Chilly”, Jules and Robin explore a controversial “Final Appeal” case from “Unsolved Mysteries” which did not even air on television until over 16 years after it was originally produced. Our guest today – Jonathan Sumption – sat, until June of this year, as a Non-Permanent Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal. He left that role – "in high dudgeon" – as a critique of the creeping totalitarianism of pro-Beijing influences in the east Asian territory. In this wide-ranging discussion with Nicholas Mostyn, Helena Kennedy and Charlie Falconer, Lord Sumption discusses how he came to that decision and looks at how the remaining British judges ought to handle their continued work in the region. If you have questions, criticisms, praise or other feedback, please do send your thoughts to us via lawanddisorderfeedback@gmail.com!Law and Disorder is a Podot podcast.Executive Producer and Editor: Nick Hilton.Associate Producer: Ewan Cameron.Music by Richard Strauss, arranged and performed by Anthony Willis & Brett Bailey.PR by Sally Jones. Critics are urging Australian judges serving on Hong Kong's highest court to resign. Fellow foreign justices have stepped down, some in response to the enactment of national security laws, which aims to stifle dissent and democratic freedoms. The involvement of foreign judges on Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal has a long history. Hong Kong was aiming to maintain its common law system after it was handed back by the British to China in 1997. But some critics say Hong Kong's current retention of this system is a move to preserve the city's international image, and prove the independence of Hong Kong's judiciary from Chinese rule.

Send us a Text Message.Welcome to the Breakfast With Tiffany Show podcast, where we uncover the extraordinary journeys of individuals shaping our world today. On this episode, we're honored to welcome Henry Edward Tse, a true trailblazer whose resilience and courage has propelled the fight for transgender rights in Hong Kong.Henry's story began in the vibrant streets of Hong Kong, where he grappled with the complexities of gender identity in a society steeped in tradition. Growing up in Hong Kong in the early 2000s, he faced profound struggles living in a body that didn't align with his true self. Despite attending an evangelical girl's school, where he was often misidentified as a tomboy or lesbian, Henry's journey of self-discovery truly began when he moved to the UK to attend the University of Warwick.Despite the challenges, Henry embarked on a transformative journey that led him to the realization of his authentic self as a transgender man during his studies in the UK.Returning to his homeland, Henry confronted the harsh realities of outdated laws and societal stigma. Undeterred, he became a vocal advocate for change, leading the charge to redefine transgender rights in Hong Kong. His efforts culminated in a historic moment in February 2023 when the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal ruled in favor of transgender individuals, striking down discriminatory laws that required invasive surgery for legal recognition. In this captivating episode, Henry shares his personal journey, from the struggles of his own transition to the broader fight for equality and acceptance. Join us as we delve into the inspiring story of a man who refuses to back down in the face of adversity.Join us next time for Part 2 of this conversation as we delve deeper into Henry's advocacy work and the future of transgender rights in Hong Kong. Want to help make soccer a cleaner and fairer sport? Public supervisors will initially be appointed as volunteers for two years, with those making exceptional contributions to be eligible for reappointment. The CFA also announced on Thursday the introduction of a reward mechanism to encourage tips about violations such as match-fixing, gambling and bribery that manipulate competition results to tarnish fair play in the sport. Reports of such violations will be welcomed at all levels, targeting all competitions, organizations and wrongdoers, the CFA regulation said.中国足协还宣布引入奖励机制,鼓励举报假球、赌博和贿赂等操纵比赛结果、损害体育公平竞争的违规行为。欢迎公众对此类违规行为涉及的各级各类赛事、组织和违法者进行举报。Verified sources providing solid tips will be compensated with cash ranging from 2,000 yuan ($276) to 20,000 yuan, depending on the value of information. Those who make key contributions in exposing and cracking down on serious cases will be given extra rewards, the CFA said.终审法院表示,提供可靠线索且查证属实者将依据具体信息价值获得2,000元(276美元)到20,000元不等的现金奖励;对揭露和打击严重案件做出重要贡献者,将给予额外奖励。As China pushes ahead with its goal of developing into a world powerhouse in the sport, a goal highlighted in a reform project approved by the State Council in 2015, the fight against corruption shall be carried on with tougher actions, CFA Party chief Zhang Jiasheng said.国家体育总局副局长、中国足协党组书记张家胜表示,2015年国务院批准的一项改革方案设定了建设世界体育强国的目标,在目标推进过程中,反腐败斗争将更加严厉。"We have to continue fighting all disciplinary violations with stricter and more aggressive measures, and intensify anti-graft efforts at all levels to clean up the sport for good," Zhang, who is also a vice-minister of the General Administration of Sport, said at a meeting discussing soccer development and reform on Wednesday.3月27日,张家胜在足球发展和改革会议上说道:“我们要继续以更严厉、更严厉的措施打击各种违纪行为,加大各级反腐力度,坚决维护体育正风肃纪”。Observers said the introduction of external scrutiny will help improve the credibility of the governing body's anti-graft campaign, but more efforts are needed to guarantee that valuable feedback, suggestions and tips are respected, handled appropriately and implemented transparently.观察人士表示,引入外部审查将有助于提高管理机构反腐运动的可信度,但还需要加大力度确保宝贵的反馈、建议和线索得到尊重、妥善处理和透明实施。"These new initiatives show the CFA's resolve to shake off the ill repute overshadowing the game. It's more important, though, to see how they can be implemented," said Han Qiaosheng, a former sports commentator with China Central Television.中央电视台前体育评论员韩乔生表示:“这些新举措表明中国足协决心摆脱给这项运动带来的不良声誉。不过,更重要的是如何落实”。To meet a major goal highlighted in the soccer reform project, the Chinese men's team has been going all out to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, following its sole appearance in the tournament in 2002. A 4-1 Asian zone qualifier win at home against Singapore on Tuesday, the men's side's first international victory in four months, kept alive Team China's hopes of making the 2026 tournament and offered Chinese fans a rare reason to celebrate following years of struggle supporting their underachieving national squad. We've supported the national team through ups and downs without regret. We hope all the efforts will eventually pay off," said He Sheng, a die-hard fan and a volunteer referee with a level two national certificate, after watching the match in Tianjin.铁杆球迷、国家二级证书志愿裁判何升在天津观看完比赛后说道:虽然风风雨雨,但我们一直支持国足,并且无怨无悔。希望所有人的努力都能得到回报”。CFACourt of Final Appeal终审法院public supervision system公众监督制度disciplinary violation违纪行为
In Job's last testimony, he longingly gazes at the past where he and those under his care flourished under the friendship of God. He bitterly glares at the present where he seems to be suffering the judgment of God, and he hopefully glimpses the future where he boldly approaches God like a prince, robed in righteousness and crowned with justice. In Jesus, we have a righteousness greater than Job's! So when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we too should boldly robe ourselves in Jesus' righteousness and approach God like a princess, fully persuaded that he will embrace us.

Clearing the FOG with co-hosts Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese
On February 20 and 21, the High Court in the United Kingdom heard Julian Assange's case for the right to appeal his extradition to the United States. Clearing the FOG speaks with Chip Gibbons, a lawyer and journalist with Defending Rights and Dissent, who attended the hearing. Gibbons describes the intentional efforts by the UK court to prevent media from covering the hearing, which is ironic as the hearing was fundamentally about the attack on press freedom, and what Julian Assange's options are depending on what the court decides. Gibbons makes the point that the United States has given up all pretense of protecting Assange's health and life if he is extradited, even though that admission would be enough to block his extradition, revealing the lack of regard for the law and Assange's human rights that has been evident throughout this prosecution. It's Friday, December 29th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Colorado school kept parents in the dark over gender identity rooming scheme In June 2023, Jefferson County, Colorado Public Schools sponsored an overnight trip for fifth-grade students to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Serena and Joe Wailes had a daughter in fifth grade who attended the trip. They were assured in multiple parent meetings, leading up to the trip, that male and female students would be staying not only in different hotel rooms, but also on completely different floors. And they were told that their daughter would room with three other girls. However, their daughter learned that her bedmate was a boy, pretending to be a girl, from another school, reports Alliance Defending Freedom. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” When the 11-year-old girl expressed her concern, the chaperones, consistent with wacky public school district policy, told her to lie about the reason and say she needed to switch beds to be closer to the air conditioner. When the boy said he too wanted to be closer to the air conditioner, the girl again expressed her dissatisfaction and was finally moved to a new room with only one other biological girl under the false premise that the other girl was sick and needed more space. Throughout all the events of the night, the Colorado public school chaperones were required to follow the inane district's explicit policy, which disregarded the girl's feelings and privacy, repeatedly putting her in difficult positions, and disregarding her privacy concerns. The Waileses have two children who are currently in fourth grade and are scheduled to go on the same trip next year. But the Waileses do not want to be lied to again about the sexes of the students with whom their children will be rooming. Therefore, Alliance Defending Freedom sent a demand letter in late December on the Waileses' behalf asking the Colorado public school to clarify whether it will allow parents to make informed decisions for their children. Truth be told, the Waileses should seriously consider not letting their children to go on the school trip at all or consider homeschooling. ‘Hyper-vaccination' of children likely behind rise in autism and transgenderism Dr. Peter McCullough, an eminent cardiologist and prominent critic of the COVID medical establishment, provided a comprehensive well-documented presentation to colleagues regarding crimes of the “biopharmaceutical complex,” the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and the causes of the hundreds of thousands of deaths from the COVID shot. Now he's pointing to studies that now show a connection between the “hyper-vaccination” of children, high rates of autism, and individuals going forward for transgender surgery, reports LifeSiteNews.com. McCullough, who has made the case that no one in the world has more authority on the topic of COVID-19 than him, provided detailed analysis of multiple scientific studies and data reports demonstrating the government's intentional suppression of effective early treatments for the virus, the best course of preparation for the projected next pandemic in nasal sprays, and how children “going natural with no shots” have better overall health outcomes. Proverbs 13:10 says, “Wisdom is found in those who take advice.” Sounds like Dr. McCullough is offering some compelling wisdom for parents today. Republican Lauren Boebert switches districts In a just-released video, conservative firebrand Lauren Boebert has announced she will switch congressional districts for the 2024 election from the Third in the west to the Fourth in the east, after scraping to re-election in 2022 by only 546 votes, reports the Daily Mail. Boebert, a 37-year-old grandmother and mother of four sons, said that she had made the decision to continue her fight against 'the socialists and communists taking over our country.' She made headlines over the summer after she was caught on camera groping her date, vaping at a performance of the musical Beetlejuice in Denver, and then giving ushers the finger when she was asked to leave and declaring: 'Do you know who I am?' She also sparked controversy by heckling Joe Biden in his 2022 State of the Union address. Boebert announced her switch of districts in a Facebook video published on Wednesday. Listen. BOEBERT: “Today, I am announcing my candidacy for the 2024 Republican nomination to represent Colorado's Fourth Congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. “This announcement is a fresh start following a pretty difficult year for me and my family. I had never been in politics before and I've never been through a divorce, something I never intended to go through. I've made my own personal mistakes and have owned up and apologized for them. It's tested my faith, my strength, and my abilities both as a mom and a congresswoman. “We have to protect our majority in the House, win the Senate, and win the presidency.” Undercover pro-life videographers lose final appeal to avoid $16 million penalty for exposing baby parts scandal And finally, pro-life activists lost their final motion to prevent a $16 million punitive judgment against them for releasing undercover videos of abortion industry insiders discussing the harvesting and sale of organs from aborted babies, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Operation Rescue made the announcement Friday concerning appeals by the pro-life investigative group Center for Medical Progress, attorney Steve Cooley, Operation Rescue's Troy Newman, and pro-life activists Sandra Merritt and Albin Rhomberg. Starting in 2015, Center for Medical Progress began releasing a series of secretly-recorded conversations with officials from Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation. Those undercover videos set off a firestorm of controversy and a string of revelations about the abortion industry breaking multiple federal laws against profiting off human tissue, altering abortion procedures for the sake of procuring better tissue samples, and potentially even committing partial-birth abortions or infanticide. In addition, there were video examples of abortion workers displaying callousness toward the humanity of the children they killed in their gruesome line of work. The pro-life heroes at Center for Medical Progress had done the right thing in keeping with the command of Proverbs 31:8. It says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” Disturbingly, neither the Obama nor Trump administrations took action against the abortion organizations over the revelations, but the pro-lifers who exposed their activities were hit with various lawsuits and felony charges on claims of trespassing, misidentifying themselves with fake driver's licenses, and recording people without their consent. Last year, Center for Medical Progress appealed the nearly $16 million judgment against them, arguing that the federal Racketeer Influenced & Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act had been misapplied. Sadly, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear that appeal in October. Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Friday, December 29th in the year of our Lord 2023. Psalms and Wisdom: Psalm 142 Psalm 142 (Listen) You Are My Refuge A Maskil1 of David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer. 142 With my voice I cry out to the LORD; with my voice I plead for mercy to the LORD.2 I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him. 3 When my spirit faints within me, you know my way! In the path where I walk they have hidden a trap for me.4 Look to the right and see: there is none who takes notice of me; no refuge remains to me; no one cares for my soul. 5 I cry to you, O LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”6 Attend to my cry, for I am brought very low! Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me!7 Bring me out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name! The righteous will surround me, for you will deal bountifully with me. (Here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me!) Oh, that I had the indictment written by my adversary!36 Surely I would carry it on my shoulder; I would bind it on me as a crown;37 I would give him an account of all my steps; like a prince I would approach him. 38 “If my land has cried out against me and its furrows have wept together,39 if I have eaten its yield without payment and made its owners breathe their last,40 let thorns grow instead of wheat, and foul weeds instead of barley.” The words of Job are ended. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. 3 One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. 4 And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?” 5 And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling,1 that is, those who dwell in heaven. 7 Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them.2 And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, 8 and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. 9 If anyone has an ear, let him hear: 10 If anyone is to be taken captive, to captivity he goes; if anyone is to be slain with the sword, with the sword must he be slain. Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints. The Second Beast 11 Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence,3 and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed. 13 It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, 14 and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of4 the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain. 16 Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave,5 to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, 17 so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. 18 This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.6 Footnotes [1] 13:6 Or tabernacle [2] 13:7 Some manuscripts omit this sentence [3] 13:12 Or on its behalf [4] 13:14 Or on behalf of [5] 13:16 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface [6] 13:18 Some manuscripts 616 (ESV)

The works of Emily Dickinson and Audre Lorde were standard classroom fare twenty years ago, but these days the right wing is clearing them off the shelves. Janet Mason revisited Dickinson and Kathy Sanchez profiled Lorde in September 2003. And in NewsWrap: a “historic” ruling by Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal calls on the government to legally recognize same-gender couples, a Bulgarian lesbian couple gets the European Court of Human Rights to order a framework for certifying same-gender relationships, the Texas Supreme Court allows the enforcement of the state's pediatric trans healthcare ban, a Georgia federal judge gets out of the way of another ban on trans healthcare for children, California Attorney General Rob Bonta wins a temporary injunction against the Chino Valley Unified School District's new trans-outing policy, and more international LGBTQ news reported this week by Joe Boehnlein and Melanie Keller (produced by Brian DeShazor). Elihu Rebukes Job's Three Friends 32 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. 2 Then Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, burned with anger. He burned with anger at Job because he justified himself rather than God. 3 He burned with anger also at Job's three friends because they had found no answer, although they had declared Job to be in the wrong. 4 Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were older than he. 5 And when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, he burned with anger. 6 And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said: “I am young in years, and you are aged; therefore I was timid and afraid to declare my opinion to you.7 I said, ‘Let days speak, and many years teach wisdom.'8 But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand.9 It is not the old7 who are wise, nor the aged who understand what is right.10 Therefore I say, ‘Listen to me; let me also declare my opinion.' 11 “Behold, I waited for your words, I listened for your wise sayings, while you searched out what to say.12 I gave you my attention, and, behold, there was none among you who refuted Job or who answered his words.13 Beware lest you say, ‘We have found wisdom; God may vanquish him, not a man.'14 He has not directed his words against me, and I will not answer him with your speeches. 15 “They are dismayed; they answer no more; they have not a word to say.16 And shall I wait, because they do not speak, because they stand there, and answer no more?17 I also will answer with my share; I also will declare my opinion.18 For I am full of words; the spirit within me constrains me.19 Behold, my belly is like wine that has no vent; like new wineskins ready to burst.20 I must speak, that I may find relief; I must open my lips and answer.21 I will not show partiality to any man or use flattery toward any person.22 For I do not know how to flatter, else my Maker would soon take me away. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!' and, ‘The time is at hand!' Do not go after them. 9 And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once.” Jesus Foretells Wars and Persecution 10 Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. 12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake. 13 This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. 16 You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers3 and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. 17 You will be hated by all for my name's sake. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your endurance you will gain your lives. Jesus Foretells Destruction of Jerusalem 20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, 22 for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. 23 Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. The Coming of the Son of Man 25 “And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” The Lesson of the Fig Tree 29 And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Watch Yourselves 34 “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” 37 And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. 38 And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him. And did not one fashion us in the womb? 16 “If I have withheld anything that the poor desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,17 or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it18 (for from my youth the fatherless2 grew up with me as with a father, and from my mother's womb I guided the widow3),19 if I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing, or the needy without covering,20 if his body has not blessed me,4 and if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep,21 if I have raised my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate,22 then let my shoulder blade fall from my shoulder, and let my arm be broken from its socket.23 For I was in terror of calamity from God, and I could not have faced his majesty. 24 “If I have made gold my trust or called fine gold my confidence,25 if I have rejoiced because my wealth was abundant or because my hand had found much,26 if I have looked at the sun5 when it shone, or the moon moving in splendor,27 and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth has kissed my hand,28 this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges, for I would have been false to God above. 29 “If I have rejoiced at the ruin of him who hated me, or exulted when evil overtook him30 (I have not let my mouth sin by asking for his life with a curse),31 if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who is there that has not been filled with his meat?'32 (the sojourner has not lodged in the street; I have opened my doors to the traveler),33 if I have concealed my transgressions as others do6 by hiding my iniquity in my heart,34 because I stood in great fear of the multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and did not go out of doors—35 Oh, that I had one to hear me! For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness2 is revealed, the son of destruction,3 4 who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6 And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, 10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, 12 in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. Barnabas and Saul on Cyprus 4 So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. 5 When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John to assist them. 6 When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus. 7 He was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the magician (for that is the meaning of his name) opposed them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. 9 But Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him 10 and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord? 11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking people to lead him by the hand. 12 Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had occurred, for he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord. Paul and Barnabas at Antioch in Pisidia 13 Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem, 14 but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. And on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. 15 After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, say it.” 16 So Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said: “Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen. 17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. 18 And for about forty years he put up with2 them in the wilderness. 19 And after destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance. 20 All this took about 450 years. And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. 21 Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.' 23 Of this man's offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised. May 11, 1982. Duluth, Minnesota. 33-year old married couple Larry and Debbie Race celebrate their 14th wedding anniversary by taking their boat out onto Lake Superior for an evening cruise. Hours later, Larry returns to shore and calls for help, claiming that a leak prompted them to evacuate the boat in a life raft before they became separated. Debbie's body is soon found washed up on shore and her cause of death is determined to be hypothermia. However, since the life raft cannot be found and there are a number of discrepancies in Larry's story, authorities suspect foul play and eventually charge him with Debbie's murder. Larry is convicted of the crime and receives a life sentence, but even after he is paroled 22 years later, Larry continues to maintain that Debbie's death was an accident. Was Larry Race wrongly convicted for the nonexistent murder of his wife, or was justice properly served?
