We're so close to the end of the book, and I still feel a little off-balance about where we're heading in terms of the final conflict. So far I'm pretty compelled by what's going on with Hanara, and I like that the Emperor read his mind because it's going to give him a huge advantage in seeing what Takado was really up to. There's also a really interesting moment where Stara and he ladies are evacuating, and they come across Tessia and Jayan. Their names are never said, but I kind of like that chance encounter, although I don't love that Jayan gets severely injured. Yoiks. There's not the big climax that I expected, and instead of really being in the middle of things from the perspective of someone actually fighting, we instead look on from the sidelines while Tessia stays out of the way and Hanara pees his pants. Weird choices. Then there is the seemingly impulsive decision that the Kyralian magicians make when they finally defeat the Sachakans. I guess a victory that didn't kill a single magician would lead to you getting cocky, but invading Sachaka is a really...serious move. These chapters are really interesting because we're starting to get into some stuff that I think will develop into the Guild that we know from the other trilogy. The most important thing in that regard is the idea of magical birth control, which Tessia is really surprised to hear about. But of course, really, the focus of this section is the chaos and devastation left behind after the Ichani tear through the countryside. There's an interesting POV section from Hanara, and he's in the unfortunate position where he's low-key happy to be back with his Master and jealous of the other slave who is trying to take his position. Many thanks to the delightful Ashleigh for commissioning the start of the next book by Trudi Canavan!This book takes place way back, far far before the timelines in the original Black Magician Trilogy, before the Guild was ever even formed. It's curious to see how unstructured things were and how little was understood about magic at this time, and the idea that Tessia would have to give up her pursuit of becoming a healer simply because she has magic seems so silly now that we know it becomes on of the major disciplines at the school. However, there are some really problematic elements to this story that I can't ignore, and I am just really hoping the book goes on to prove me wrong about those first impressions. On this episode, Zach and Matt talk with Tessia De Mattos, a DPT student at Columbia University who is trying to start a strength and conditioning elective within her program. We discuss hurdles she's faced in this process and Matt shares similar struggles he faced when attempting the same task. Bio:Tessia De Mattos is a DPT student at Columbia University. She competes nationally in powerlifting, enjoys snowboarding and recently obtained her CSCS. At Columbia, she is a Student Course Director for the Perspective on Practice student run elective in which she helps bring in different speakers to Columbia University. These speakers cover topics from residency and cash-based PT to strength and conditioning principles in rehabilitation. She has also participated in the Level Up Initiative. Regardless of how annoying demons may be in deliverance sessions, I must obey the leading of the Holy Spirit. In the deliverance session with Tessia from Texas, spirit Jezebel kept laughing. I wanted to say something to it, but the Holy Spirit told me to ignore it and keep speaking FIRE prayers. Oh, how annoying it was!!!
