HEAVY Music Interviews
Respecting The Musical Legacy Of JOHN SYKES With MARK ALEXANDER-ERBER From GOLDEN ROBOT RECORDS

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2025 14:57

Interview by Kris PetersThe world lost a true legend earlier this year, when vocalist/guitarist John Sykes - Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, Tygers Of Pan Tang - lost his battle with cancer. While his legacy endures thanks to the music he created, the world has still lost a musical innovator and pioneer with a gift for writing timeless music.Around eight years ago, Sykes entered into a contract with then-fledgling music label Golden Robot Records, agreeing to terms for a new album to be released through the company. But over the ensuing few years and as life and circumstances got in the way, all that was honoured by Sykes in that contract was four songs, written by him with a view to completing a full album down the track, that have until now remained locked away from the world in their original demo state.Since Sykes' passing, the label has gone to the vault and dusted off the cobwebs and had them professionally remixed and remastered by Aussie legendary producer Paul Gommersall (Paul Weller, George Michael, GNR).Paying respect to the music and legacy of John Sykes, Golden Robot decided to allow the music world at least six months to grieve the loss of Sykes before announcing their intentions to release the four songs - the first new music from Sykes in a quarter of a century - as a four-track EP.It was a decision taken with much respect to the situation, the man, and his music, but ultimately one which Golden Robot Records believes serves the best interests of fans and enables them to release material which was to form the nucleus of a full body of work.Golden Robot Global Entertainment's Mark Alexander-Erber sat down with HEAVY to talk us through the release and the history behind four tracks, which could well be the final recording the world hears from a man who has shaped so much of its history."John was introduced to me during the formative days of Golden Robot Records' journey in Los Angeles," Mark explained. "The label officially launched around 2015, and by 2017 we had entered into an agreement with John for a full-length studio album. The original contract was straightforward — John was to deliver a minimum of ten tracks for a complete album.""As per the terms of the agreement, we made an initial payment to John, and everything was progressing well. John preferred to work at his own creative pace, which we respected. The understanding was that upon delivery of additional material, a second tranche of payment would be made. However, as time went on, it became clear that what we had originally paid for and what was ultimately being delivered were two very different things.""That said, we approached the situation the way we always have at Golden Robot — through open communication and a commitment to the relationship. Like many bands we worked with in those early years, it was never just about rigid contractual enforcement; it was about navigating challenges together in good faith.""In the end, what we received were four absolutely outstanding demos — powerful, compelling tracks that truly reflect John's immense talent and artistic voice. While it wasn't the full album we initially set out to produce, those recordings have tremendous value, and we're proud to be the ones bringing them to the world."In the full interview, Mark provided detailed insights into his professional relationship with John Sykes, which commenced in 2017. He acknowledged that while not all contractual obligations were fulfilled to the letter, all parties involved reached mutual compromises in good faith. Mark expressed sincere appreciation for their personal and professional relationship, noting the importance of approaching sensitive matters with discretion and respect. The discussion also included specifics regarding the forthcoming 4-track EP, which will feature two previously unreleased songs along with remastered versions of two existing tracks. Mark confirmed that the estate of the late artist will receive the royalties as stipulated under the terms of the agreement. He conveyed confidence in the artistic and technical quality of the recordings, stating that the work pays a respectful and authentic tribute to John's legacy. The release strategy includes the rollout of two singles ahead of the EP, with the first single scheduled for release in late June through Golden Robot Records on a global basis. We discussed Mark's personal relationship with John and the decision to delay releasing the songs after John's death, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Ep 552: Stephen Pearcy is Back for More with Warren DeMartini! The Ratt legends hit the road!

Stephen Pearcy & RATT: Still Biting BackStephen Pearcy, the unmistakable voice of RATT, has never stopped flying the flag for 80s hard rock. As the founding frontman of the Sunset Strip legends, Pearcy helped define the sound of an era with hits like “Round and Round,” “Lay It Down,” and “Back for More.” Even as RATT's lineup shifted over the decades, Pearcy has kept the legacy alive through solo records, reunion shows, and that signature snarl fans can't get enough of.Back with Warren DeMartiniIn a move that has RATT fans buzzing, Pearcy is back on stage with iconic RATT guitarist Warren DeMartini. While a full RATT reunion with the original classic lineup seems unlikely, this pairing alone brings a ton of excitement. Warren's slick, melodic leads were always a core part of the band's signature sound, and seeing him jam with Pearcy again is a nostalgic thrill—and maybe a hint at more to come.6th Solo Album in the WorksStephen Pearcy is currently working on his 6th solo album, and it's shaping up to be something special. Not only is Warren DeMartini involved, but there's also talk of Jake E. Lee (Ozzy Osbourne, Badlands) potentially contributing. Pearcy has hinted that the record will blend new material with some unreleased tracks from the vault, giving fans both fresh fire and classic vibes. No official release date yet, but it's clear he's crafting something fans will want to crank loud.Golden Robot Records Legacy UpdatePreviously, Pearcy signed with Golden Robot Records for a legacy album, expected to be a retrospective mix of past RATT tracks, live cuts, and rarities. While that project has seen some delays, it's reportedly still on the table. Pearcy has shifted focus to the new solo album first, suggesting the legacy release may follow later. For fans waiting to relive the glory days, it'll be worth the wait. Why Just Warren? Some fans are wondering—where's Bobby Blotzer or Juan Croucier? According to Pearcy, there are no plans to reunite the full classic lineup. Personal and legal conflicts, particularly surrounding the RATT name and branding, have made that reunion complicated. But Pearcy says he's focused on moving forward with musicians he gels with—and for now, that means jamming with Warren, someone he shares deep musical chemistry and history with.Stay ConnectedWant the latest from Stephen Pearcy? This week a continuation of our series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats, but more about artists with similar vibes, sharing a sonic landscape, or whose songwriting and playing styles are sympatico. This is another band that is near and dear to both of you humble hosts. A band whose unique harmonies and awesome riffs inspired both hosts to pick up guitars and start singing; the amazing Seattle grunge gods ALICE IN CHAINS! Join us as we discover other bands influenced and inspired by AIC's revolutionary game-changing music. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It's been said that there is no originality left in rock n' roll and it has also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Interview by Kris PetersIt's hard to believe that two of rocks biggest musical exports of the last quarter of a century have never toured Australia before. With a combined tenancy of 50 years, ORGY and COLD are loved and revered the world over for a succession of singles including Blue Monday, Stitches, Stupid Girl and Suffocate to scratch the surface, but it is the bands' respective albums Candyass and Year Of The Spider that have seen them both stand the test of time with their integrity intact and their heads still rocking. With ORGY celebrating 25 years of Candyass and COLD two decades of their breakthrough album, the two bands have joined forces for a twin assault on this country this October with select dates in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.HEAVY caught up with founding member and frontman from ORGY Jay Gordon and guitarist Carlton Bost to find out just we should expect."Your guess is as good as mine," Bost laughed when asked why the band has neglected us for so long. "I've been there with another band, and it was amazing, so I guess better late than never for ORGY to get there. We're totally excited and just finished a two-month run with COLD, and it's a really great package."In the full interview, we discuss Orgy's upcoming tour in Australia, including the tour dates, bands they will be performing with, and the energetic stage show and setlist. We also talked about the band's history and the challenges of relearning old songs for the tour, as well as their excitement about playing new material. Jay Gordon reflected on the band's origins and their impact on the industry, including their relationship with Jonathan Davies and his label. The conversation also touched on future music releases and tour plans, including a record deal with Golden Robot Records and a partnership with the band Cold. Despite uncertainty about their fan base in Australia, the group expressed gratitude and anticipation for the upcoming shows.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersGolden Robot Global Entertainment is a worldwide brand that prides itself on being home to some of the most legendary bands and up-and-coming artists in the world. Starting with just one band in 2015, the company has expanded quickly to meet demand and spans a multitude of genres and styles. They are a truly global network, with bands such as Filter, Orgy, The Answer, Shepherd's Reign, Rose Tattoo and countless more on their successful roster. But there is much more to Golden Robot Records than meets the eye, with Mark Alexander, Golden Robot Global Entertainment Manager, joining HEAVY to tell us about some exciting new developments that will benefit musicians and artists of all levels of experience and stature."Golden Robot Records started nearly ten years ago now," he began. "It basically started because my son was on Australia's Got Talent - he was about nine at the time, he's 21 now - and he nearly won the show. Coming out of the show, we thought, we don't want him to be a novelty. We want him to have some sort of legacy. So we put him together with a couple of great guys and fantastic musicians - Steve Balbi was one of them - and they made this great album. They called it Orbiter and the band was called Moon. When I shopped that around, nobody was interested, nobody gave a shit. So I thought, you know what? I'm gonna do this myself. I'd given everybody a little present to thank them, a little golden robot, and when it was time to name the company we named it Golden Robot Records. We started off hard. We were signing some great bands in the States and Europe. I was working with Derek Shulman, who was the ex-president of Roadrunner Records, and him and I went along and got involved in quite a lot of things from about 2015, and we just kept growing. (but) this is a different year for us. We've had the hits and misses over the years. We've had some things that have gone to number one. We've had some things that have been a disaster, but that's the business. The good thing about being an Aussie and working in the global world is if you make a mistake, you can apologise and fix it and get on with it. If you're doing something well, we'll celebrate it with you. It served its purpose, and it served us well, and we've worked with some great bands. We've got global distribution through physical and digital - and we've just changed recently to an even better set up - great PR, great marketing people. My team today is the best it's ever been. We've had a few changes over the last six months, and I've got a really good team that just gets on with it. We're just in it for the music and to get the word out about Aussie music across the world. It's exciting."In the full interview, Mark tells us about the new developments at Golden Robot Records including Robot Distro, how to best get your music out there for mass consumption, what sorts of things a band should have done as a unit before seeking representation, how to successfully negotiate the music industry, how this all helps Australian bands and music, their new singing with rock band ORGY, future developments and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

It's a tale as old as time; finding someone really special and becoming involved, then as time passes you learn they are cheating on you and stringing you along with lies. The feeling of frustration sinks in as you realise you have to end it and wish you could go back and “rewind” and make different decisions. "As expected another blistering assault by Riley's L.A. Photos by Ian RitterInterview by Kris PetersThe Bendigo Hotel in Melbourne is stamping its mark on the live music scene from early in the New Year when it hosts Robot Rocks Presents, a showcase event of bands and artists aligned to the Golden Robot label. The brainchild of Kim Bencic, Robot Rocks kicks off on January 7 in the first of what is hoped will be a regular music program that will highlight some of Golden Robot's emerging artists across Australia. The first installment will see Stonetrip, Cicadastone, Shotgun Mistress, Gen2, The Vendettas, Mark E and The Exiles take to the stage in one massive night of live music covering a range of genres and styles.Bencic and Mark Alexander-Erber, CEO and founder of Golden Robot Records sat down with HEAVY to talk about Robot Rocks Presents and Golden Robot."Robot Rocks will be taking primarily our Australian - not all of them - but part of our Australian roster and touring them around Australia in 2023," Alexander-Erber explained, "which is fantastic.""Golden Robot Records has been going about 8 years now," he continued, "and we have fast become one of the leading independent labels in the world. We've got 12 labels in the group, around 500 bands, with some of the biggest names in the world. We have Filter and The Answer and three members of Guns N Roses, LA Guns, RATT and Faster Pussycat plus a huge slew of great Aussie singer/songwriters, like Nick Barker and Johnny Casino. We've worked with Steve Kilby from The Church. We've worked with Mark Of Cain and we've got new bands that have joined that could be the next big thing. We just signed an incredible band out of New Zealand called Shepherd's Reign that could be the next Sepultura, so we're right across all fronts from country music, hard rock, heavy rock, metal, punk, old school rock and classic rock etc. We're an Australian label out there kicking ass all over the world, especially in Europe and the UK and America."While Alexander-Erber oversees the above and more, he gladly defers to Bencic when asked about the Robot Rocks Presents events."A couple of the bands came to me and asked me what I thought about putting some shows together for everyone that's on the roster with Golden Robot Records," she began. "There seems to be a lot of festivals going on and you just can't get on them, so we thought together we'll put our own shows on and just go around Australia."In the full interview Kim talks more about the first show on January 7 and the bands involved, outlines her future plans to take Robot Rocks gigs throughout Australia. Mark talks more about Golden Robot Records, their stable of bands, upcoming releases - including Stonetrip who will be releasing a new single and their debut album early next year, tips for getting your band on a labels radar, showcasing homegrown talent and more.

Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends.  Vanilla Fudge was one of the first American groups to infuse psychedelia into a heavy rock sound to create “psychedelic symphonic rock” an eclectic genre which would, among its many off shoots, eventually morph into heavy metal. Although, at first, the band did not record original material, they were best known for their dramatic heavy, slowed-down arrangements of contemporary pop songs which they developed into works of epic proportion. Vanilla Fudge celebrated their 50th year Anniversary in 2017 and are still rocking the world in the current day with one of their greatest hits 'You Keep Me Hanging On' featured in the Quentin Tarantino movie 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.' Please welcome lead vocalist, keyboardist, composer, and arranger for classic rock legends Vanilla Fudge… MARK STEIN to Interviewing the Legends … The last time chatted was in March of 2018… Spirit of 67 Vanilla Fudge and Mark Stein Project. QUESTION: I just had on Arthur Brown who is 80 now. He mentioned Vanilla Fudge … I told Arthur that he and Vanilla Fudge don't seem to age!   PURCHASE THE LATEST RELEASE FROM VANILLA FUDGE ENTITLED VANILLA ZEPPELIN After recently releasing 3 remastered Led Zeppelin classics ‘Rock and Roll,' ‘Immigrant Song' and ‘Ramble On' in the lead up, Vanilla Fudge have today released the remastered album Vanilla Zeppelin digitally via Golden Robot Records. Vanilla Fudge roll these classics out in their own way, with some amazing and soaring organ interludes and adding their soul and funked up influence giving these songs a new life and identity of their own. Available at amazon.com "Vanilla Fudge are the true masters of the cover song. The listener will be pleasantly surprised by the direction each track will lead them. Do not expect a cloned Zeppelin album because that's not what makes a great cover song and that's not what Vanilla Fudge is all about! These brand-new interpretations of Led Zeppelin classics are Ingenious & inspiring and should be revered by the true rock historian." -Ray Shasho Music Journalist/Author/Talk Show Host PURCHASE MARK STEIN'S FIRST SOLO RELEASE 'THERE'S A LIGHT' at amazon.com  also PURCHASE MARK STEIN'S FIRST BOOK "YOU KEEP ME HANGIN' ON by Mark Stein with Larry Schweikart Available at amazon and Barnes and Noble MORE THAN A BIOGRAPHY, or a tell-all, You Keep Me Hangin' On is a cultural and social history, music criticism, and the story of generational change. It's a new interview (it had been way too long!) with rock n' rollers [The Bloodshots!](http://www.bloodshotsmusic.com/) We talked about their signing with [Golden Robot Records](http://goldenrobotrecords.com/), playing more layered, complex music, Winnipeg's inherent weirdness as a place to play shows, and much more! Note that one member of this band (sorry, Orvis!) is difficult to hear. It's one of the hazards of doing these remote episodes with large groups -- sometimes connections/devices/etc. can have an impact. It definitely doesn't take away from the quality of the overall episode, though! This episode brought to you by [Rob Crooks](http://robcrooks.bandcamp.com/), whose outstanding new album, Introducing the Ghost, is out now from [Saskatoon Folk Rap Records](http://saskatoonfolkraprecords.bandcamp.com/), and by [Boots & Saddle](http://ckuw.ca/programs/detail/boots-and-saddle) on CKUW, hosted by [Sean Burns](http://seanburns.bandcamp.com/) Huge thanks to everyone who supports the podcast on [Patreon](http://www.patreon.com/witchpolice). You can help out for as little as $1 a month if you like the show and want to throw some change in the guitar case!
