In this episode we're going back in time to talk about Ford Fairlane, a character created by Rex Weiner for a series of stories published in the late ‘70s in the now-defunct ‘New York Rocker' and a second series published in the early ‘80s in the ‘LA Weekly'. The 1990 movie ‘The Adventures of Ford Fairlane' starring Andrew Dice Clay is loosely based on the character Rex created. It wasn't until 2018 that the New York and LA stories were finally published in their entirety in book form, entitled ‘The (Original) Adventures of Ford Fairlane', and I'm jazzed that I get to chat with Rex about his book. Welcome back, loyal listeners, to Make Mine Paperback! The discussion of superhero-inspired media continues! This week the hosts talk about songs that deal with superhero topics. The songs, which span several music genres, are Magneto and Titanium Man by Paul McCartney and Wings, Superman (It's Not Easy) by Five for Fighting, Batman and Robin by Snoop Dogg, and Ode to a Superhero by Weird Al. Although superheroes may often get their start in comic books, there are many forms of media that draw inspiration from superheroes. Some songs, such as Magneto and Titanium Man as well as Ode to a Superhero, are about telling the stories of a superhero adventure. Others, Superman (It's Not Easy) and Batman and Robin explore how it feels to be a superhero. Listen in to find out what the podcast thinks about superhero-themed songs!

Our discussion covers earliest memories hearing songs refer to superheroes (Superman Lover, Magneto and Titanium Man), who did it best (3 Doors Down, Jane's Addiction, Crash Test Dummies), and rappers who have adopted superhero personas almost like a secret identity (Wu Tang Clan, Jean Grae, MF Doom).

'Bout you know 'bout dat? It's a new dawn on a new day and a new episode of everyone's favorite podcast. Josh openly despises Green Bay, Wisconsin, Alan wants to retire in prison, Producer Pete makes a drawing, and the podcast closes with a song about Dog the Bounty Hunter fighting the Titanium Man in the core of the sun. It's weird, I guess. Like and subscribe or something.

This time on the Couch: Mike, James, and Shée activate their refractory coating or whatever after reading Invincible Iron Man no. 134! Publicly disgraced on account of all of the murdering he's done, Tony Stark is getting back to basics. That means destroying public property while sending the bill to taxpayers, creating futuristic technology that he's unwilling to share with an undeserving world, and thinking the Playboy Club is a perfectly romantic place to take a date. Meanwhile, Communist supervillain the Titanium Man shows up to fill the void in wanton destruction caused by Tony Stark taking a night off, and comedian Rodney Dangerfield puts in a cameo appearance! Does he finally get some respect? It'd be the end of his career if he did!
Last time he was on the podcast, we suckered Levi Buchanan (PiNKHEARTS) into watching 1994's terrible The Fantastic Four movie, which was so awful, none of us have left our houses since. But we did locate the massive tiled bathroom where he's been quarantined and coerced him into weighing in on the debut of Gorgon, the final breakup of Peter Parker and Betty Brant, and Iron Man's first encounter with the Titanium Man. Reading List: Amazing Spider-Man #30, Avengers #21, Daredevil #10, Fantastic Four #44, Journey Into Mystery #121, Sgt. Fury #23, Strange Tales #138, Tales of Suspense #71, Tales to Astonish #73, ©1965 Marvel Comics. "Marvel by the Month" theme by Robb Milne, sung by Barb Allen. All incidental music by Robb Milne.
