Tom Oldham is a photographer specialising in portraits and he's shot everyone. Athletes, olympians, footballers, models, everyone from Liam Gallagher and Jack White to Usain Bolt. His images are wonderful, he takes creative risks which I love and we also discuss work he does in education to get photography into schools.More about this show:A camera is just a tool but spend enough time with photographers and you'll see them go misty eyed when they talk about their first camera or a small fast prime that they had in their youth. Prime Lenses is a series of interviews with photographers talking about their photography by way of three lenses that mean a lot to them. These can be interchangeable, attached to a camera, integrated into a gadget, I'm interested in the sometimes complex relationship we have with the tools we choose, why they can mean so much and how they make us feel.

Celebrity portrait and commercial photographer and Sony Ambassador Tom Oldham joins the podcast from his London studio to talk about his journey from growing up in the small rural town of Dorset to photographing some of the most recognizable faces in the world, and earning awards like Amateur Photographer Magazine's 2023 "Hero Of Photography" and Sony's "World Open Photographer Of The Year" in 2020.  During our conversation Tom talks about how the burgeoning rave scene of the UK would end up changing the course of his life and put a camera in his hand to begin documenting the culture he loved so much and all the amazing ups and downs his career has brought him since.  He also gives a behind the scenes look at what it's like to photograph subjects like Rick Rubin, Nick Cave, Liam Gallagher, and so many more.  Lastly we talk about longevity in a career as fickle as photography and what he feels has been his secret to not burning out, how he approaches all the personal projects he has become known for over the years, and the advice he gives to other creatives chasing their own dreams.   To Learn More About Tom Oldham Visit: http://www.tomoldham.com And Follow On Instagram At: https://www.instagram.com/tommyophoto To Learn More About Visual Revolutionary Visit: https://www.visualrevolutionary.com And Follow On Instagram At: https://www.instagram.com/visualrevolutionary/ And YouTube At: www.youtube.com/@visualrevolutionary

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Tom Oldham is primarily a portrait photographer, shooting famous and talented people such as well known musicians and sports stars, both for publications such as Mojo magazine and for big-brand commercial clients. In 2016, on the Summer solstice, Tom stayed up for 40 hours and shot a portrait per hour from midnight to midnight, for a project called The Longest Day. The whole process was captured in this great little short film and Tom then printed and distrubuted a free newspaper of the images. His personal project, The Last of The Crooners, a portrait of the Palm Tree pub in Bow, east London and the aging musicians who perform there, was awarded the 2018 Sony World Photography Award for Portraits in the Professional Category. His most recent project, Shoot An Arrow and Go Real High, focusses on some of the characters in the ballroom scene. One of the portraits from that project was recently featured in the Royal Photographic Society’s International Photography Exhibition. On episode 125, Tom discusses, among other things:Doing big jobsThe ‘rennaissance’ of filmHow he got into photographyAvoiding a signature styleHis new project Shoot An Arrow and Go Real HighSelf-doubtThe Last of The CroonersHow winning a Sony Award with it had an impact and why he nearly didn’t enterCompetitionsHis photobooks for schools initiative, Creative CornersThe Longest Day project Website | Instagram | Twitter“it comes to a larger point I suppose about really believing in your own work and that none of it actually reallly matters that much.
