FROM THE WINDOWPANE : A Book About the Pandemic by Dr. Ida Acuna-GarzaFrom the Windowpane is a book about a little girl named Alyssa. She is experiencing many feelings during the lockdown due to the Covid 19 pandemic. She looks out the window and reflects on everything that is happening and the new rules in place - washing your hands, social distancing, and wearing masks. She's also missing her school classes and her friends. As she looks outside through the windowpane, she sees a tree and thinks about the freedom the tree feels wishing in a way that she was the tree. The book then reflects on the positive lessons we have all learned from the changes the pandemic brought to our lives.Dr. Ida Acuña-Garza recently retired as chief executive officer for the South Texas Coalition. She is the owner of Successful Lifestyles, LLC, an educational consulting firm. She has engaged in community outreach for over forty years—as county extension agent for Family and Consumer Sciences and as director of research for a parent outreach program. She received doctor's degree in adult education at Texas A&M University in College Station in 1990; master's degree in counseling and guidance from the University of Texas-Pan American in 1978; and bachelor's degree in home economics, specializing in food and nutrition from Texas A&M University in Kingsville in 1970. She has also authored a number of children's books—The Adventures of Callie: Callie Finds a Home, The Adventures of Callie: Callie's New Friends, The Cat Who Ate Spinach, Super Copper: Yoga Cat, From the Windowpane: A Book About the Pandemic, and The Birthday Party. To her, writing children's books is a means to help parents teach life skills to children, promote reading, comprehension, and life-long learning. https://www.pageturner.us/bookstore/from-the-windowpane-a-book-about-the-pandemichttp://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/7324pt2.mp3

A superhero origin story would absolutely be 12 years in a cage and then set free by secretive criminals. That's the story of Flaco, the Eurasian Eagle Owl, released from his vandalised cage in Central Park Zoo, New York City. He turned up in the middle of an intersection nearby, looking dazed and people in the know thought, ‘This is going to end badly,' because animals released from captivity have an extremely low survival rate. But Flaco – ‘skinny' in Spanish – flew in the face of all that. Flaco not only learned to live, he seemed to thrive. He turned up on fire escapes and windowsills, and was photographed around Manhattan like a coked-up socialite with wide eyes and fabulous ear tufts. But, how long could Flaco possibly last in the graveyard of bird diversity that is the city? How long could he fly without confusing a window for the sky?Featuring:Ed Shanahan, Metro reporter, The New York Times. Julia Wang, Project leader, BirdCast at Cornell University. Brendon Samuels, Fatal Light Awareness Program and Western University in Canada.Dr Kylie Soanes, Urban ecologist at The University of Melbourne.Mat Howard, Midjuburi Ward (Marrickville), Inner West Council, NSW.Production:Ann Jones, Presenter / Producer.Petria Ladgrove, Producer.Additional mastering:  Hamish Camilleri. This episode of What the Duck?! was produced on the land of the Wadawarrung and Kaurna people.

S7E16 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 18 April 2024.  As always it was a mixed bag of new and old, heavy and not so heavy.  Listeners rated it the most fun ever.   Note that if you listen to TSORR on Google Podcasts they are shutting it down.  You can find us on plenty of other sites if this happens.  The TSORR website will always be able to help.   This week's Twisted Twins featured tracks called ‘Bulletproof'.  We could have had Twisted Quintuplets as there were 5 different tracks with that name but we settled on a triplet.  Five Finger Death Punch, Sinner, and Paul Stanley.       Immortals this week came from Alter Bridge and the track was of course ‘Blackbird'.  Everything about it is perfect, from the way it builds all the way through to Tremonti's masterful solo and Myles hitting all those high notes. The Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘P'.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: The Pretty Reckless – Light Me UpPearl Jam – Vs.Pantera – Far Beyond DrivenParkway Drive – Vice Grip Artists Featured: Butchering the Beatles, Raven Eye, ACDC, Free, The Screaming Jets, Rose Tattoo, Warrant, Thin Lizzy, KISS, Fifth Angel, Brave Rival, Joe Bonamassa, Burn Halo, Blue Scream, Five Finger Death Punch, Sinner, Paul Stanley, rush, U2, Pixies Danzig, Rob Zombie, Paradox, Paragon, Judas Priest, Texas Hippie Coalition, Alter Bridge, The Pretty Reckless, Pearl Jam, Pantera, Parkway Drive, Tom Morello, Windowpane, Massive Wagons, Zakk Wylde, Kerry King, Chaos Doctrine, David Bowie, Accept.  The Story of Rock and Roll. Highlights included new tracks by Green Day and Blink 182.  We also looked at John Corabi's work and I discussed his awesome Biography ‘Horseshoes and Hand Grenades.   This episode's Diabolical Challenge looked at 4 albums from 1996: Marilyn Manson – Antichrist SuperstarIn Flames – The Jesters RaceSoundgarden – Down on the UpsideZakk Wylde – Book of Shadows This week The Immortal's track was off A Night at the Opera by Queen.  It's a track that got overshadowed by 'Bohemian Rapsody' and it totally show cases what Queen were all about.  I am of course talking about 'The Prophets Song'. Artists featured:  Hell Yeah, Led Zeppelin, Greta Van Fleet, Walking Papers, Danko Jones, Dirty Honey, Trouble, Loverboy, Triumph, Type O Negative, James Reyne, Jimmy Barnes, Bryan Adams, Joe Jackson, Green Day, Blink 182, Mötley Crüe, The Dead Daisies, Warrant, Chickenfoot, Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher, Joe Walsh, Tesla, Queen, Marilyn Manson, Sound Garden, In Flames, Zakk Wylde, Kid Rock, Alice Cooper, Windowpane, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Jasper DanThe Story of Rock and Roll. The River Ridge girls will play for the Class AAAAAA state championship. The Knights beat Langston Hughes 60-46 in Saturday night's semifinal at the University of West Georgia, bolstered by a lockdown performance on the defensive end and a 21-point game from Sophia Pearl. The win set River Ridge (26-5) up a rematch with Lovejoy in Friday's state championship at the Macon Coliseum. The Wildcats are the reigning champions and knocked off both River Ridge and Sequoyah in the playoffs last season. The game will tip off Friday afternoon at 5:30 PM and will air statewide on Georgia Public Broadcasting. GPB will provide television coverage for all state championship basketball games. For the first time in more than 40 years, the Cherokee boys basketball team will be playing for a state championship. The Warriors earned their first trip to the state finals since 1982 with a 63-60 overtime victory over Norcross in a Class AAAAAAA semifinal Saturday at the Georgia State Convocation Center. Cherokee (25-6) will play Region 5AAAAAAA rival Wheeler next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Macon Coliseum. The Warriors lost all three meetings with the Wildcats this season, including the region title game. It will be only the second state championship appearance for Cherokee, which lost to Campbell 68-67 in the 1982 Class AAAA title game. That team was led by the late Tony Ingle, the future coach at Kennesaw State and a Cherokee County Sports Hall of Famer. The Warriors will also try to become only the second boys GHSA state champion from Cherokee County, joining two-time champ Canton (1942, 1951).   A man was rescued by firefighters Saturday after he was buried in a collapsed trench, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services reported. Cherokee County firefighters responded to a person trapped in a trench at about 1:30 p.m. on Hilltop Lane, off Riverlake Drive near Woodstock Saturday, according to the fire department, where they found a man "buried up to his neck." Firefighters called a trench rescue team from Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services for aid, and stabilized the area and removed dirt from around the man. First responders provided medical care and monitored the man while he was trapped until he could be removed. He was completely removed from the trench at about 3:45 p.m., according to the fire department. The man was treated and transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in stable condition. According to the fire department, the man was working on waterproofing a residential basement at the time of the incident. Police released the identification Monday of a Woodstock woman who was shot and killed Saturday at a home in Rome. A Rome Police Department report states that police arrived at 3 Shadowbrook Drive Saturday evening at 10:52 p.m. and 21-year-old Ellis Geoffery Marrs exited the residence. He told police "he had just shot someone," the report stated and police detained him before calling for backup and entering the residence. Once in the back yard, the responding officer stated a woman was attempting to perform life saving procedures on 51-year-old Iris Dail Edwards on the patio of the home. EMTs arrived on the scene and began to save Edwards. The responding officer found the firearm sitting on top of a grill with the magazine ejected. The officer then cleared a round from the gun and placed it in the trunk of their patrol vehicle. Edwards was pronounced dead on the scene by the Floyd County coroner's office. Her body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab awaiting an autopsy. Marrs was booked into the Floyd County Jail early Sunday. Marrs is charged with murder and as of early Monday he remained in the Floyd County Jail. Additional charges are pending the results of the continuing investigation. It was the second fatal shooting in four weeks in Rome. On Feb. 4, an Aragon man was killed outside a Park Homes apartment on Reservoir Street off Turner McCall Boulevard. Thomas Fountain will return to his Cherokee County roots to perform at the Canton Theatre at 7 p.m. on March 11. Fountain's performance in the Canton Theatre is arranged as a songwriter listening room to provide a more intimate listening experience for the audience. Each song's history and origin will get a deep-dive explanation at its performance. He also plans on playing unreleased music that he's written in recent months. Fountain said that he enjoys smaller venues where he is able to personalize the audience experience more. His local sponsors will also have merchant booths set up at the theater during his concert. Since the start of his musical career, Fountain has toured 10 states with performers like Chris Stapleton and Charlie Daniels. His most recent single, “Window Pane,” was released on Sept. 24, 2021. His music video for “It Don't Matter,” which was self-produced by Fountain and recorded in Cherokee County, was posted on YouTube on June 10, 2021. The singer described his music as something that sounds and feels more like 90s country than the modern direction of the genre. Growing up on musical influences like Alan Jackson and Garth Brooks, Fountain said that this style has always found its way back into his own compositions. Reserved seating is sold out but general admission tickets are still available for purchase through eventbrite for $20, not including taxes and fees. A private pre-show meet and greet with Fountain can be added on for an additional $20. A gift bag raffle ticket can be purchased for $10 as well as a full-sized signed event poster for $15. The Etowah boys' state title dreams came to an end Saturday night they it fell 56-53 to Alexander in a Class AAAAAA semifinal heartbreaker at the University of West Georgia. It was a tight game throughout, with Etowah (22-10) leading 10-7 after the first quarter. Alexander's size advantage was clear from the start, with 6-foot-8 forward Braedan Lue controlling the board. Lue scored the Cougars' first five points and finished the night with 18 points. Brandon Rechsteiner led Etowah with 15 points in his final high school game before heading to Virginia Tech. Dimitri Angelakos scored 13 points, followed by Aiden Weaver, who added 10 points. Alexander (27-5) will play Lee County for the state championship Friday at the Macon Coliseum. Lue shined in crunch time. Down four points with under 2 minutes to go, he single-handedly took the lead for the Cougars, scoring through contact and converting the three-point to make the score 54-53 in their favor. The Eagles were forced to foul, and after a few attempts to get into the bonus, Marvin McGhee IV broke free for a dunk. Out of a timeout, Rechsteiner got a near half-court shot up, but it rimmed out, and Etowah's run was over. It was an emotional ending for Dasinger and the Eagles, with the core of Rechsteiner, Etter, Clemmons, Kyle Tipper and others all seniors. #CherokeeCounty #Georgia #LocalNews           -          -          -          -          -          -          The Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast is local news for Woodstock, Canton, and all of Cherokee County. Register Here for your essential digital news.             This podcast was produced and published for the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger and TribuneLedgerNews.com by BG Ad Group     For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com/    https://cuofga.org/   https://www.drakerealty.com/   https://www.esogrepair.com/         See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 4 of the brand new Season 6 kicked off at precisely 19h00 on 26 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio.  First up was a band who are no strangers to TSORR, Great White with ‘Never Trust a Pretty Face'.  We had a nice up-tempo start cycling through Motor Sister, and Accept and then took a huge step back into the past with the ever-fresh sound of Creedence Clearwater Revival and ‘Green River', from there we went to Aussie for some Cold Chisel and a track called ‘Misfits'.  We stayed there for Airborne and moved on to Tesla via Halestorm and a track called Legendary which of course she is. Lzzy Hale is the real deal.  The Tesla track was ‘Gettin' Better' off the RePlugged Live album which is amazing.  Tesla fans check it out.   Black Star Riders (without Scott Gorham) released a new album last week called Wrong Side of Paradise, we listened to the title track.  It's one of those that fall into the ‘Songs that could be about South Africa' category.  Talking of that we also had ‘Losing More Than You Ever Had' (Accept) and ‘Stand & Deliver (Airbourne) as further examples.   Def Leppard's colossal breakthrough album Pyromania turned 40 this week and KISS main man Paul Stanley turned 70.  We celebrated with Rock, Rock (Till You Drop), and Love Gun' respectively. 'Peace is Free' from Black stone Cherry calmed things down a bit, and we stayed calm with ‘Soul' from 12th Avenue and wished Mark Haze, vocalist extraordinaire who formed 12th Avenue,  a speedy recovery from the back-op he had this week.  Linkin Park with ‘One Step Closer' sounded great and then we got to Megadeth with 'Life in Hell' off their latest album and a brand new track from Metallica called ‘Screaming Suicide'.  TSORR predicts that 2023 will be Metallica's year.  They seem to have hit a sweet spot and are feeling the love and appreciation of the people of Planet Earth.  The South African stuff was, as we say in these parts, 'poes heavy'.  Kill Frenzy out of Cape Town and Diverted Disorder from the Vaal gave us our weekly dose of Linda take a walk music.  Check out both bands if you dig the heavier stuff. This week's Immortal track came from Led Zep with 'Since I've Been Loving You' off Led Zeppelin III.  We had UK Punk courtesy of Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, and Stiff Little Fingers which led us to U2 with 'I Will Follow'.  Prepare to hear a lot of U2, I am busy with Bono's book Surrender, it is a great read.  Even if you are not a fan it is so rich with descriptions of the times, places, and characters of the times that it is well worth delving into.  the Audible version brings it all to life.  We ended with Slayer and another song that could be about South Africa called 'Seasons In the Abyss'.     Artists featured:  Great White, Jorn, Motor Sister, Accept, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Cold Chisel, Airbourne, Ratt, Halestorm, Nickelback, Tesla, John Mellencamp, Black Star Riders. Phil X & the Drills, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, KISS, The Black Crowes, White Zombie, Emigrate, Glenn Hughes, Black Stone Cherry, 12th Avenue, Linkin Park, Megadeth, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, The Stranglers, U2, Me and That Man, Kill Frenzy, Diverted Disorder, Piet Botha, Windowpane, Slayer. The Story of Rock and Roll. It's like a reflection through a window pane.It was after Aaliyah had passed away that I saw her in a vision. Sometimes I just heard her speaking. She said: You don't have a clue . We both want the same thing. I wish that I had gotten to know you. You have to be careful, and you have to change.I was told quite a bit. The vision was letting me know that something was happening. And today I see that something is happening. And when I saw Aaliyah in that vision, I felt like I saw a part of me. I felt something of the future. I heard her say: You are my kin.Whether she meant heavenly or earthly, it doesn't matter. I'm thankful for the vision. (Chorus)Aaliyah- Window Pane. Song by Gail Nobles © 2022

Episode 31 of Season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock radio on 4 August 2022.  This show is as unprepared as it gets, let's see what happens.  We kicked off with Bad Company and ‘Rock ‘n' Roll Fantasy, then into Dave Hause off one of my favourite albums of all time titled 'Bury Me In Philly'.  The track we played was called ‘The Flinch'.  From there we sped it up a bit with ‘Speed Demon' from Keel, by now I was hating what I had in the playlist and desperately looking for a way out.  By request, we took in some of Australia's finest in the form of James Reyne and Cold Chisel with ‘Fall of Rome' and ‘When the War is Over' respectively.  The Cold Chisel track should cause some piloerection, the first two verses sung by guitarist Ian Moss and then the sheer power of Jimmy Barnes taking over from verse three.  I love the way Barnsey does this, standing back and letting someone else have a go just increases the magnificence of his voice.  It's the contrast that does it, and then of course Don Walker on piano.   This week's Rock Review featured Rush and the last track 'The Wreckers' cut off violently due to the time slot allocated so to make amends and also by request we listened to it in its awesome entirety.  Things by now were picking up with some very special people tuned in.  We checked out a band called Ignite and another called Windowpane, two relatively unknown bands making some awesome music.  Next, we popped over to Germany for some Rammstein and some Accept.  We checked some new stuff from Alter Bridge off their forthcoming album Pawns and Kings, the track was called 'Silver Tongue' and we also listened to 'Times Like These' off the brand new Five Finger Death Punch release Afterlife.  A couple of Alices' in the form of Alice in Chains and Alice Cooper were followed by classic 80's metal from Van Halen and ACDC. We wound it down with four South African bands, starting with a request for Kobus! with Kultuurfeestent and then Jack Hammer, The Black Cat Bones, and L.A. Cobra. The Bones in particular sounded amazing with their cover of Bob Dylan's ‘I Shall be Released.  We stayed mellow and wound down this very random show with some Black Stone Cherry off the Kentucky album and Kid Rock with ‘Don't Quit' off his latest album released earlier this year titled Bad Reputation.    Artists featured:  Bad Company, Dave Hause, Desperado, Keel, Danko Jones, James Reyne, Cold Chisel, Destruction, Thundermother, The Gaslight Anthem, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Rory Gallagher, Ignite, Windowpane, Rammstein, Accept, Alter Bridge, Five Finger Death Punch, Audioslave, Alice in Chains, Alice Cooper, Virgin Steele, ACDC, Van Halen, Candlebox, Kiss, David Bowie, Kobus!, Jack Hammer, The Black Cat Bones, L.A. Another fun episode of TSORR, this one went out on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 23 June 2022.  It was episode 25 so we are nearly halfway through Season 5 already.  Kicking off with Dee Snider and ‘Mask', and then Lita Ford with ‘The Mask' we symbolically said cheers to wearing masks in SA at last.  Or until the next pandemic in 2060 but I don't think flu will be around by then anyway, or me for that matter.  Moving on.  We checked out Autograph with a very fresh sounding 2017 live version of ‘Turn Up The Radio' and then got down to business with some Megadeth, Saxon, and Guns 'n' Roses.  The new Megadeth called The Sick, The Dying and the Dead is on pre-release but we took in a track off United Abominations called 'Washington is Next.  The G 'n' Roses track came off Chinese Democracy, just for a change. To rebalance for a Guns 'n' Roses without Slash we played a track off his It's 5 'o Clock Somewhere album.   There was a call for some metal so I played Asking Alexandria which was met with Oom-ish howls which a stated with Metallica's 'The Thing That Should Not Be'.  More howls, so we got back to old-school metal in the form of ACDC and Rainbow.  The world has changed a lot.   Other than that we paid tribute to Clarens Clemons who died 11 years ago this week.  'Born to Run' did the honours there.  We heard the obligatory Tom Petty track and some Marilyn Manson with 'New Model No 15' off Mechanical Animals.  Rammstein hit us with 'Haifisch' which means shark in English and then we celebrated a historic victory in which the forces of good triumphed over the forces of evil at the CCMA, Slayer with 'Richard Hung Himself' marked that spot.No SA music in this episode!!!  can't believe it, it just got too busy.  Next week I promise.  Other than that there were two good releases this week Machine Head with a track called 'Unhallowed' and In Flames with 'State of Slow Decay', heavy metal is alive and kicking ass.  We went out quietly with Judas Priest's beautiful ballad titled 'Never Forget' which reminds us that they will keep going until they no longer can and that they will never forget the support from the fans, it's a bitter-sweet reminder of the fragility of it all.  Tomm Waits closed the gate with 'Gun Street Girl' off raindogs.   Artists featured:  Dee Snider, Lita Ford, Kris Barras Band, Autograph, Bad Company, Megadeth, Praying Mantis, Rhino Bucket, Saxon, Dangerous Toys, Guns ‘n' Roses, Asking alexander, Metallica, ACDC, Rainbow, Slash's Snake Pit, Soil, Slayer, System of a Down, Soundgarden, Bush, The Jam, The Damned,  Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Windowpane, Skid Row, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Cold Chisel, Uriah Heep, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames, Judas Priest, Tom Waits

A dramatic exploration of the occult, the play features a seance in which Jonathan Swift's voice is projected though a medium, along with those of his two lovers, Stella and Vanessa. The Dublin Spiritualists' Association is about to hold a seance in rooms once visited by Stella, the name Jonathan Swift gave to his beloved Esther Johnson. One of the windows has part of a poem by Stella scratched in the glass. After some debate between the various attendees at the seance, amongst whom are a clergyman, a gambler, and a Cambridge student writing a thesis on Swift, the medium Mrs Henderson begins. A spirit Lulu is driven away by an ugly old man, who turns out to be Swift, to whom Vanessa (Hester Vanhomrigh) makes a declaration of love. Swift refuses to be responsible for a child coming into the world, wishing to leave only his intellect to posterity. Quoting Stella's poem, Swift then tells of his love for her. The Cambridge student John Corbet is suitably impressed by Mrs Henderson's performance, but she denies all knowledge of Swift. Left on her own, Swift speaks through her once more: ‘Perish the day on which I was born!' Episode 35 of Season 4 went out live at 7 pm on 2 September 2021.  The show featured a number of albums released in 2021 including one by a guy called Ayron Jones.  I am quite blown away by this album titled Child of the State.  He has a voice that reminds me of Prince in places, with shades of Terrence Trent D'Arby and Gary Clarke Jr.  He also plays a mean guitar, his track 'My Love Remains' should raise some goosebumps.  Mason Hill's album Against the Wall  is another new one I am enjoying. We took a listen to 'Broken Son'.    I am also going through a Samantha Fish phase so we heard from her and rounded out the blues with some Jonny Lang.  The heavy lifting was handled by Onslaught, Bullet For My Vallentine and, Sunken State.  The latest Rob Zombie was pretty cool and so was a track off Serj Tankian's latest EP called Elasticity, we took a listen to a track called 'Your Mom' which is proudly flying the System of a Down flag.  I had a little rant about the state of the government and the local municipality, as we have been without water for 24 hours, it felt appropriate to take a track off Give 'Em Enough Rope' by The Clash and 'Fire & Gasoline' by Steve Jones.  The music and lyrics punctuated a number of disparaging remarks about the state of things in general.  They were unplanned but heartfelt. The South African stuff came from Valiant Swart, The Burning, The Uninvited, and Sunken Stae as well as newcomers Imagine&Nation who have released an excellent EP titled  Never Be Quiet which could be a mantra for TSORR.     Artists featured:  Herman Frank, Monster Truck, Seasick Steve, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, The Sweet, Mötley Crüe, Steelheart, Vain, Onslaught, Q5, Queensrÿche, Running Wild, Wolfmother, Grandfunk Railroad, Ayron Jones, Mick Jagger, Serj Tankian, Mason Hill, Samatha Fish, Jonny Lang, Imagine&Nation, Valiant Swart, The Burning, Bullet For My Vallentine, Massive Wagons, Mammoth WVH, Rose Tattoo, The Clash, Steve Jones, Accept, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead, Windowpane, Mr Big, The Uninvited, Sunken State.

Episode 30 of Season 4 went out live on 29 July 2021 at 7 pm.  It was a tough show for me in many ways.  My father passed away on 24 July and it was the first show since his passing.  Inevitably his memory permeated the show although he wasn't a big music guy his influence on me was profound.  I tried to keep the show about life and death in general rather than getting too deep.  With so many loved ones passing in these troubled times my sense is that many people will be able to relate to certain tracks and get some comfort out of the music and its ability to both hurt and heal.  We kicked off with Metallica and 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'.  The first hour was pretty up-tempo with bands like Edguy, Krokus, W.A.SP., and Skid Row.  I paid tribute to Dusty Hill, bass guitarist for ZZ Top, who passed away last night age  72.  He apparently died in his sleep which is about as good as it gets I guess.  We took a listen to Tush as he does lead vocals on that classic track.  the mood changed a bit once we hit the Springsteen and took in Atlantic City off his masterpiece Nebraska.   Zakk Wylde, Neil Young, and Windowpane with 'The More I Run' kept the mood where it was.  The show moved along with typical TSORR fare, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, ACDC, Lynyrd Skynyrd all delivered the goods and in the last hour, I played a couple of tracks that I dedicated to Dad before taking us out with the only really heavy track of the show in the form of Machine Head's 'Davidian'.  Anyway, it is what it is, I hope you get something out of it, it was a difficult show for me and I let Lemmy have the last word with 'Till the End'.  Artists featured:  Metallica, Edguy, Skid Row, Krokus, W.A.S.P., ZZ Top, My Chemical Romance, Bruce Springsteen, Zakk Wylde, Neil Young, Live, Windowpane, Richie Kotzen, Scorpions, Foo Fighters, Scorpions, Foo Fighters, Billy Idol, The Four Horsemen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackstone Cherry, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Theory of a Deadman, Linkin Park, Jimmy Barnes, Brian Fallon, ACDC, Gotthard, Johnny Cash, Valiant Swart, Roan Ash, Mammoth WVH, Aerosmith, Oasis, Jack Hammer, Black Sabbath, Machine Head, Motörhead.

In this provocative and exhilarating dialogue, Jun Po Roshi and Ken Wilber take an in-depth look at Keith Martin-Smith’s new book: A Heart Blown Open: The Life and Practice of Zen Master Jun Po Denis Kelly Roshi. For most of us, we would need to reincarnate at least 50 times in order to attain such an incredible volume of experience. But for whatever reason, it seems that Jun Po went a slightly different route, and chose to live all 50 of those lives at once. Here is his remarkable story—a riveting tale of enlightenment, debauchery, and infinite jest. One of my favorite encounters with Jun Po Roshi was a night I spent driving him from the San Jose airport to Pacific Grove, during our last Integral Spiritual Experience event. A few minutes into our three-hour drive, I asked him what his favorite Beatles album was. “Sgt. Peppers,” he replied, so I played the album on my iPhone. I explained to him that I was raised on a steady diet of this music, and had always felt a slight envy that his generation got to experience the explosion of rock and roll culture firsthand. “This music—it makes me feel nostalgic for a time before I was born,” I told him. “Well get ready,” he shot back, “because that time is coming sooner than you think.” At that moment it struck me as the funniest thing I had ever heard. A perfect Zen joke. A surge of laughter bubbled up from my belly, and as it erupted out of my face, something *popped* inside my consciousness. For just a second, reality flipped itself inside-out, and all that remained were the trembling aftershocks of laughter and a big, beautiful Buddha smile radiating from the back seat of the van, as we continued down the black highway that stretched before us. This perfectly-timed sense of humor, of course, is one of Jun Po’s finest and most endearing qualities. There’s no denying it: the man’s got jokes. But these are not just your standard gags and quips—there is transmission in Jun Po’s humor. In fact, his wit is almost as important to his teaching as his wisdom, and he uses it to set the ego at ease while preparing it for it’s own oblivion, leading us to the infinite absurdity at the very core of our existence. Samsara is a joke, and this very moment is the punchline. Another remarkable quality of Jun Po Roshi that really comes through in this dialogue: he is not the type of guy to sweep his shadows beneath the rug of enlightenment. Rather, he chooses to meet them head-on, using the curative, self-liberating quality of consciousness to extract transcendent light from some of the deepest, darkest parts of his psyche. These might very well be the most admirable aspects of Jun Po’s character: his unabashed and unflinching honesty, his willingness to confess and take full responsibility for his own flaws and mistakes, his unshakable presence and courage as he embraces the pain and stands in the purifying flames of redemption. Jun Po Roshi accepts light and shadow alike as intrinsic elements of his spirituality, exemplifying the Tantric ideal of “bringing everything to the path” by neither avoiding nor excluding the more onerous and destructive facets of our lives. Instead, he urges us to face them directly, to work with them intimately, and to ultimately transmute them into wisdom, virtue, and compassion. Jun Po Kelly Roshi’s story is truly remarkable, and when coupled with his radiant personality and wily sense of humor, would no doubt make for a wildly entertaining and enriching Hollywood blockbuster. Even more intriguing, his story echoes a narrative even greater than his own (as all truly great stories do)—it is hard to think of anyone who better personifies the remarkable progression of American spirituality from the 1960’s until today, standing as he does with one foot firmly planted in the sixties counterculture, and the other in today’s Integral renaissance. Kaar recently created a replica of Robert’s moss box to honor his work. This was a little box that Robert used to carry moss back to his bakery. Now Joanne's moss box features fold-down flaps with delightful discoveries that call to mind the spirit of Robert Dick. And I share a video of Joanne's marvelous creation in the Facebook Group for the show. So if you want to check it out, it's a masterpiece, and it's a thrill to see that video. I followed up with Joanne, and when I emailed her, I asked for her insights on Robert. And Joanne replied with a lovely interview she did back in 2017. Here’s an excerpt: “Wearing a swallowtail coat, jeans, and a chimney-pot hat, Robert Dick often had children following him from his bakery in Thurso, as they were curious to know what he was doing on his walks. He was not only a baker but also a renowned self-taught botanist, a geologist, and a naturalist. Interested in entomology, he collected moths, beetles, butterflies, and bees. To bring the samples home he pinned them to the inside of his hat.”  She continues, “Dunnet Head was one of his favorite places to walk, describing it as having a forest of ferns. Dunnet Head Lighthouse was built in 1831, an event Robert Dick must have witnessed. Robert Dick saved old letters, envelopes, newspapers, and documents to keep his collection of small plants and mosses in.  His herbarium collection is now in Caithness Horizons Museum, Thurso, and contains around 3,000  specimens.” Now when I was researching Rober,t I stumbled on an old document by Sir Roderick Murchison, the Director-General of the Geographical Society. Roderick delivered a wonderful speech at Leeds in September 1858, where he mentioned meeting the multi-talented baker Robert Dick. “In pursuing my research in the Highlands… it was my gratification.. to meet with a remarkable man in the town of Thurso, named Robert Dick, a baker by trade. I am proud to call him my distinguished friend. When I went to see him, he spread out before me a map of Caithness and pointed out its imperfections. Mr. Dick had traveled over the whole county in his leisure hours and was thoroughly acquainted with its features. He delineated to me, by means of some flour which he spread out on his baking board... its geographical features. (How clever of Robert to use flour to show the topography of the county!) Here is a man who is earning his daily bread by his hard work; who is obliged to read and study by night; and yet who can instruct the Director-General of the Geographical Society. But this is not half of what I have to tell you of Robert Dick. When I became better acquainted with this distinguished man and was admitted into his sanctum—which few were permitted to enter—I found there busts of Byron, of Sir Walter Scott, and other great poets. I also found books, carefully and beautifully bound, which this man had been able to purchase out of the savings of his single bakery. I also found that Robert Dick was a profound botanist. I found, to my humiliation, that this baker knew infinitely more of botanical science—ay, ten times more—than I did; and that there were only some twenty or thirty British plants that he had not collected… These specimens were all arranged in most beautiful order, with their respective names and habitats.” After Robert’s death on this day in 1866, a memorial obelisk was installed to honor him in the Thurso Cemetery. Today, the curator at Caithness Horizons Museum, Joanne Howdle, has digitalized the precious Robert Dick Herbarium.   December 24, 1889 On this day, the White House's first Christmas tree was set in place to delight "Baby McKee," the favorite grandson and namesake of President Benjamin Harrison. A 1967 article from the Indianapolis Star said, “There had never been a Christmas tree in the White House before. Some people thought the whole thing pretty frivolous but President Harrison was adamant and set the gardeners to finding the just-right tree. It was to be tall and full and round like the trees he had had when he was a boy and found oranges and nuts in the toes of his stockings.” All through Christmas Eve afternoon, the White House gardeners worked to set the tree in place in the library over the Blue Room. No one was permitted to decorate the tree; that honor was reserved for the president and his wife. However, history tells us that the gardeners all stayed to watch. After dinner, President Harrison and first lady Caroline Scott Harrison decorated the tree with fat ropes of tinsel and old-fashioned candles. The President crowned the tree with a large star, and the first lady "stretched and stooped to fill the branches with presents." The Harrison White House at Christmas was the picture of a classic Victorian holiday scene. One can almost imagine the scene that day - with Baby McKee or little Benjamin - his wispy blond hair, sailor hat, and long white hand-tucked dress imitating the President as he walked the library with his lamb on wheels behind him. Benjamin was also quite taken with his jack-in-the-box.   December 24, 1936  Today is the anniversary of the death of the influential English gardening author and instructor, Frances Garnet Wolseley. A lifelong single lady, Frances devoted herself to gardening and gardening education. In 1902, on her thirtieth birthday, Frances created the Glynde College for Lady Gardeners on her father’s garden in East Sussex. Although her classes had only around a dozen students, Frances managed to attract some famous students included Gertrude Jekyll, Ellen Willmott, and William Robinson. And online, there’s a fantastic picture of Frances that shows her mowing a lawn with a push and pull mower with the help of one of her students - they're both standing on either side of this thing -  it took two people to run it. It’s hard to believe, but in the early 1900s, pictures of women mowing were being shown in advertisements for lawnmowers - they were trying to appeal to women to mow the lawn. In her 1908 book, Gardening for Women, Frances wrote, “It must be borne in mind that horticulture is still a comparatively new profession for women and that unless those who enter it strive to give full time and application to learning its details they cannot hope to be successful ...they should spare no pains to gain a complete education, for only then … can they expect remuneration.”   Unearthed Words Someone painted pictures on my Windowpane last night — Willow trees with trailing boughs And flowers, frosty white, And lovely crystal butterflies; But when the morning sun Touched them with its golden beams, They vanished one by one. — Helen Bayley Davis, American poet and writer, Jack Frost   Grow That Garden Library Gardens of Style by Janelle McCulloch This book came out in 2018, and the subtitle is Private Hideaways of the Design World. In this book, Janelle takes us to visit the inspiring private gardens of celebrated fashion and design tastemakers. Thanks to Janelle's work, we can understand how these beautiful sanctuaries - these gardens - have influenced creative work and life. Throughout history, Mother Nature has been a frequent source of inspiration in fashion and design. Fashion designers like Christian Dior to have used gardens and botanicals in their collections. Like us, these designers and their interior design counterparts find that gardens restore their creativity and revitalize their energy. Janelle's book takes us, "from the lush foliage of the Dominican Republic to the graceful flowerbeds of America’s East Coast, the charming roses and clipped boxwood of England’s country manors, and the patterned parterres of France’s enchanting Provence region—Gardens of Style illustrates the symbiotic relationship between horticulture and haute couture and between nature’s beautiful forms and those found in interior design. For instance, the garden of former Hermès designer Nicole de Vésian (duh-VAY-zee-an) is a sublime weave of patterns and textures, while the garden of Christian Dior features many of the roses that inspired his glamorous gowns." This book is 240 pages of beautifully photographed gardens to delight and inspire, along with stories that show the connection between trendsetters and their horticultural havens - it's a beautiful coffee table book. The original version first appeared in the New York Times, and as I share it with you, you'll realize how far we've come since the 1960s in terms of our daily gardening practice.  I'll share this version first, and then I have another version written in the 1980s - twenty years later. The Jensen version goes like this: Twas the night before Christmas and all through the yard The branches were bare and the ground frozen hard. The roses were dormant and mulched all around To protect them from damage if frost heaves the ground. The perennials were nestled all snug in their beds While visions of 5-10-10 danced in their heads. The new planted shrubs had been soaked by the hose To settle their roots for the long winters doze. And out on the lawn, the new-fallen snow Protected the roots of the grasses below. When what to my wondering eyes should appear But a truck full of gifts of gardening gear. Saint Nick was the driver, the jolly old elf And he winked as he said, I’m a gardener myself. I've brought wilt-proof, rootone, and B-nine, too. Father can try them and see what they do. To eliminate weeding, I’ve brought 2-4-D, And to battle the bugs, 5 percent DDT. To seed your new lawn, I’ve a patented sower; And since it will grow, here’s a new power mower. For seed planting days, I’ve a trowel and a dibble. And a roll of wire mesh if the rabbits should nibble. For the feminine gardener, some gadgets she loves, Plant stakes, a sprinkler, and waterproof gloves; A chemical agent for her compost pit, And for enjoying the flowers, a flower arranging kit. With these colorful flagstones, lay a new garden path. For the kids to enjoy, a new bird feeder and bath. And last, but not least, some well-rotted manure. A green Christmas year-round, these gifts will ensure. Then jolly St. Nick, having emptied his load, Started his truck and took to the road. And I heard him exclaim through the engines loud hum: Merry Christmas to all and to all a green thumb!   Well, things have changed a lot since the 1960s. So if you were a little shocked by what you heard in that version, that was standard gardening protocol for that decade. By 1987, Carolyn Roof in Paducah, Kentucky, had written her own version for gardeners in her garden column. Here’s an excerpt from hers: Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the garden not a creature was stirring, not even a wren. The work tools were hung in the tool shed with care, in hope that springtime soon would be there. The flowers were mulched all snug in their bed, while visions of show winners danced in my head. And Richard in his blanket and I with the cat had settled down for a long winter's chat. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the chair to see what was the matter. Away to the window, I flew like a flash, tore open the drapes and threw up the sash. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature UPS truck and eight tiny gardeners, With a little old driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his workers they came, and he whistled and called them by name. Now Shepard, Now Appleseed, Now Thompson and Morgan, On Wayside, On Burpee, On Parks and Starks. As the dry leaves that before the wild tornado fly when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So on to the patio, the gardeners flew with a truck full of tools, plants, and flowers, too. And then in a twinkling, I heard by the glade, the digging and planting of each little blade. As I drew in my head and was turning around, past the sliding glass door, he came with a bound. He was dressed all in grubbies, mud boots on his feet, and his clothes were all soiled with mulches and peat. A bundle of tools, plants, and bulbs were on his back, and he looked like a nurseryman opening his pack. He spoke not a word but went on with his work, and landscaped the yard, then turned with a jerk. He sprang to his truck, to his team gave a whistle, and away they all drove like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight, "Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night."   However, my favorite ending is from the first poem. Here's how the Jensens ended their poem: And I heard him exclaim through the engines loud hum: Merry Christmas to all and to all a green thumb!   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener this year. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Peter Collinson introduced nearly 200 species of plants to British horticulture - importing many from his friend John Bartram in America. When the American gardener John Custis learned that Collinson was looking for the mountain cowslip (Primula auricula), he happily sent him a sample. Auricula means ear-shaped, and the mountain cowslip is Commonly known as a bear's ear from the shape of its leaves. The cowslip is a spring-flowering plant, and it is native to the mountainous areas of Europe. Custis also sent Collinson a Virginia Bluebell Or Virginia cowslip ( Mertensia virginica). This plant is another Spring Beauty I can be found in Woodlands. The blue about Virginia Bluebell is so striking, and it's an old fashioned favorite for many gardeners. The Virginia Bluebell is also known as lungwort or oyster wort. The plant was believed to have medicinal properties for treating lung disorders, and the leaves taste like oysters. Virginia bluebells bloom alongside daffodils, so you end up with a beautiful yellow and blue combination together in the garden - something highly coveted and absolutely gorgeous. Collinson was not the only gardener in search of Virginia bluebells. Thomas Jefferson grew them at Monticello and loved them so much that they were often referred to as Jefferson's blue funnel flowers. Monticello ("MontiCHELLo”) Collinson once wrote, "Forget not me & my garden." Given Peter’s influence on English gardens, he would be pleased to know that, after all these years, he has not been forgotten. In 2010, the author Andrea Wulf popularized Collinson in the book The Brother Gardeners: A Generation of Gentlemen Naturalists and the Birth of an Obsession- one of my favorite books, by one of my favorite authors.    1786 Today is the birthday of the Danish surgeon and botanist Nathaniel Wallich. Nathaniel served as the Superintendent of East India Company's Botanical Garden in Calcutta, India. Wallich's early work involved writing a Flora of Asia. The palm Wallichia disticha (“wall-IK-ee-uh DIS-tik-uh”) was named in Wallich’s honor. The name of the species - disticha - comes from the Greek “distichos” (“dis” means two and “stichos” means line). Distichos refers to the leaves of this palm, which emerge in two rows on opposite sides of the stem. The Wallinchia disticha is a very special palm, and it is native to the base of the Himalayas. The trunk is quite beautiful because it is covered in a trellis of fiber mat - simply gorgeous. This palm can grow to 30 feet tall, but it is a short-lived palm with a life span of just 15 years. In 1824, Wallich was the first to describe the giant Himalayan Lily (Cardiocrinum giganteum) - the largest species of Lily. It is hardy in USDA Zones 7-9. The giant Himalayan Lily can grow up to 12 feet tall. Once it is finished blooming, the mother Lily bulb dies, but luckily, numerous offsets develop from the parent bulb. This dying off is common among plants that push a bloom many feet into the air. It takes enormous energy to create a towering and flowering stalk. If you decide you’d like to grow giant Himalayan Lilies, (and who wouldn’t?) expect blooms anytime after year four. Today, the Nathaniel Wallich Memorial Lecture takes place every year at the Indian Museum in Kolkata on Foundation Day. Wallich founded the museum in 1814. Wallich is buried in Kensal Green cemetery in London alongside many prominent botanists - like James Edward Smith (a founder of the Linnean Society London), John Claudius Loudon (Scottish writer), Sir James McGrigor (Scottish botanist), Archibald Menzies (surgeon), Robert Brown (discoverer of Brownian motion), and David Don (the Linnaean Society Librarian and 1st Professor of Botany Kings College London).   1859 Today is the anniversary of the death of a Swedish botanist who specialized in algae - Carl Adolph Agardh (“AW-guard”). In 1817, Carl published his masterpiece - a book on the algae of Scandinavia. Carl’s work studying algae was a major endeavor from the time he was a young man until his mid-fifties. At that time, he became the bishop of Karlstad. The position was all-consuming, and Carl put his botanical studies behind him.   1870 Today is the birthday of the physician, naturalist, and civic leader of the south-central Kansas town of Belle Plaine - Dr. Walter E. Bartlett. In 1910, Bartlett started the Bartlett Arboretum By purchasing 15 acres of land on the edge of a town called Belle Plaine - about 20 miles south of Wichita. The property had good soil, and it also had a little creek. One of Bartlett's initial moves was too dam up the creek and create a lake for waterfowl. In the flat expanse of Kansas, Bartlett was tree obsessed. He planted them everywhere - lining walkways, drives, and Riverbanks. Bartlett was all so civic-minded, and he added a baseball diamond complete with a grandstand to the arboretum and a running track and a place for trap shooting as well. After Walter died, the park was managed by his son Glenn who was a landscape architect. Glenn had studied the Gardens at Versailles - noting that they were transformed out of sand dunes and marshes. Back home, the Bartlett Arboretum had similar challenges. Glenn married Margaret Myers, who was an artist, a magazine fashion designer, a floral designer, a Garden Club organizer, and an instructor. Combining their fantastic skillsets, Glenn and Margaret turned the Arboretum into something quite beautiful. Together, they Incorporated tree specimens from all over the world. Using dredged dirt from the lake, they created Islands. At one point, the Bartlett Arboretum was the only Arboretum between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. Known for its beautiful spring tradition called Tulip Time, the Arboretum featured a tulip bed with over 40,000 bulbs. In 1997, the Arboretum was sold to Robin Macy. Macy was one of the founding members of the Dixie Chicks, and she is the current steward of the Bartlett Arboretum. Naturally, Robin incorporated music into the Arb. The Facebook Group for the Arboretum recently shared a register page from April 7th, 1929, and across the top of the register, Bartlett had quoted Wordsworth, “He is the happiest who has the power to gather wisdom from a flower.” The folks who tend the flowers and trees at the Bartlett Arboretum make people happy all year long.   Unearthed Words Here are some poems about the winter’s cold. The cover of Chris's book is captivating - it shows a very weird plant - it almost looks like a claw - and its grasp is the title of the book weird plants. In this book published by Kew Gardens, Chris shares all of the weird and wacky plants that he's encountered during his travels. There are orchids that look like a female insect, and there are giant pitcher plants as well as other carnivorous plants that take down all kinds of prey. One thing's for certain, the weirdness factor of all of these plants has helped them survive for centuries. Gardeners will get a kick out of the seven categories that Chris uses to organize these strange species: Vampires, Killers, Fraudsters, Jailers, Accomplices, Survivors, and Hitchhikers. Chris's writing is complemented by his incredibly detailed oil paintings and his fascinating range of botanical expertise. As someone who works with student gardeners regularly, I appreciate botanists who are able to make plants interesting - taking topics and subjects that may otherwise prove boring and making them utterly captivating. Chris is that kind of garden communicator. In addition to Weird Plants, Chris is the author of Field Guide to the Wild Flowers of the Western Mediterranean and co-author of Field Guide to the Wild Flowers of the Algarve; bothare published by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. You can get a used copy of Weird Plants by Chris Thorogood and support the show, using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for under $9.   Great Gifts for Gardeners Good Directions 0113VB Heart Fly-Thru Bird Feeder Birdfeeder, Copper Finish $68.64 The Heart Fly-Thru™ Bird Feeder by Good Directions combines simplicity with elegance. Paul and his family immigrated to the United States in 1906. When Paul took over his father's nursery business located on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood in the early 1920s, the poinsettia(Euphorbia pulcherrima) was a fragile outdoor wild plant. Paul fell in love with the Poinsettia and immediately felt that the plant was a perfect fit for the holiday season because the bloom time occurred naturally during that time. By 1924, Paul was forced out of Hollywood by the movie business, and he brought his family and the nursery to San Diego County. He and his wife Magdalena had four children, and they purchased 40 acres of land in Encinitas("en-sin-EE-tis"). It was here that Paul would turn his passion for Poinsettias into a powerhouse - at one point, his nursery controlled 90% of the Poinsettia market in the United States. At first, Paul raised poinsettias in the fields on the ranch. Each spring, the plants were harvested and then loaded on two railroad cars and sent to Greenhouse Growers all along the east coast. When Paul wasn't growing poinsettias, he was talking poinsettias. He started calling it "The Christmas Flower"; Paul was endlessly marketing poinsettias and praising their attributes as a harbinger of Christmas Initially, Paul worked to decrease the growing time of the Poinsettia. By getting the time to bloom down from 18 months to 8 months, Paul made it possible for the Poinsettia to be grown indoors. After figuring out how to propagate the plant through cuttings indoors, Paul was soon able to ship poinsettias around the world by plane. Paul’s son, Paul Jr., took over the business in the 1960s. He cleverly sent poinsettias to TV shows. When the holiday programs aired, there were the poinsettias - in their glory - decorating the sets and stages of all the major programs. When Paul Junior learned that women's magazines did their photoshoots for the holidays over the summer, he began growing a poinsettia crop that piqued in July. Magazines like Women's Day and Sunset were thrilled to feature the poinsettia in their Christmas magazines alongside Christmas trees and mistletoe. This venture was regarded as the Ecke family's biggest marketing success and made the Poinsettia synonymous with Christmas. And gardeners will be fascinated to learn that the Ecke family was able to distinguish themselves as a superior grower of poinsettias by using a secret technique to keep their plants compact and hardy. Their solution was simple. They grafted two varieties of Poinsettias together, causing every seedling to branch and become bushy. Competitor Poinsettias were leggy and prone to falling open. Not so, with the Ecke Poinsettia. By the 1990s, the Ecke growing secret was out of the bag, and competitors began grafting poinsettias together in order to compete. Today the Ecke family does not grow any poinsettias on their farm in San Diego County. Finally, one of Paul's Poinsettia pet peeves is the commonly-held belief that Poinsettias are poisonous. Sometimes that fear would prevent a pet owner or a young mother from buying the plant. Paul Ecke recognized the threat posed by this false belief. He fought to reveal the truth one interview at a time. It turns out that a 50-pound child would have to eat roughly 500 poinsettia leaves before they would even begin to have a stomach ache. Furthermore, the plant is not dangerous to pets. To prove this point, Paul would regularly eat Poinsettia leaves on camera during interviews over the holiday season. When the Ecke nursery was sold in 2012, it still controlled over half the poinsettia market worldwide. During the holiday season, roughly seventy-five million poinsettia plants are sold - most to women over the age of 40.

Season 2 Episode 4 played out at midnight on 24 January 2020 and it was great fun and pretty much seamless.  The show kicked off with Queensrÿche and ‘Spreading the Disease' and then straight into Dio with The King of Rock ‘n' Roll.  From there it was balls to the wall through until 2 am.  The Black Cat Bones and Fokofpolisiekar took care of the South African music, ACDC did the honours for Aussie, Accept represented Germany, Pink Floyd, and Billy Bragg were some of those from the UK, the USA was well represented as always and the colours were represented by Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.     We took a listen to a new-ish band called 3Teeth who are making waves at the moment, see what you think, I find it Marilyn Manson-ish.  After that is was the turn of a band formed in California in around 2007 called White Wizzard, the audience loved it.  It was definitely a highlight of the show, check it out, the track was called Storm the Shores and the guitar work is great.  Seether as always can be relied on to keep the show on track and then we had two tracks perfectly demonstrating one of the things TSORR radio Show is known for, notifiable guitar.  Adrenaline Mob with Mike Orlando showing us how to solo and then straight after that, no stranger to the show, Animal Bites, Dino Jelusic's band with a proper cover version of Roxette's ‘The Look'.  Dino's voice is as always off the scale good and I'm not sure who is on guitar but he is all over this.   The Rolling Stones ably represented the bands formed in the '60s and then it was time for something new on the show.  If you listen regularly you will have picked up that I am of the Van Halen school of thought i.e. that songs between 2 and 4 minutes are perfect.  Alex Van Halen once said they don't plan it that way, that's just how long it takes to say what you gotta say and move onto the next one.  This means that we are missing out on some good stuff so to remedy that I decided to play one 7 min or longer song per week.  The first of these was a track called A Little Piece of Heaven by Avenged Sevenfold.  I am happy to say the WhatsApp line loved it.  Carry the Cross by Arch Enemy was exquisite, such power.     Artists featured this week included:  Pink Floyd, ACDC, Billy Bragg, Joe Bonamassa, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Fokofpolisiekar, Queensrÿche, Bruce Springsteen, Dio, Avenged Sevenfold, Accept, Green Day, Windowpane, White Wizzard, Five Finger Death Punch, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Live, Arch Enemy, The Black Cat Bones, Animal Bites,  Seether, 3Teeth, Adrenaline Mob & The Rolling Stones, From: James Daubeney

Episode 40 of The Story of Rock and Roll went out into the world at midnight on 18 October 2019.  Two hours went by in a flash, that's the power of good music m/.  It was foot to the floor for the first hour and then we started to get a bit more off the beaten track with stuff like Nibs Van Der Spuy, Walking Papers & 12th Avenue.  According to the WhatsApp line TSORR Radio Show is “The best show on Rockfest”!! and “I am wide awake tonight show is one of the best in a long time”.  So there you have it.   The new stuff came from Mark Morton, the punk came from Green Day and from The Professionals.  As usual, I had waaaay too much music and the show could easily have gone 4 hours.  Somehow the ladies got bumped so I'll fix that next week.  Every time I play stuff off Rush's final album, Clockwork Angels, I like it more, what a special band, we listened to The Wreckers.  Every episode of TSORR is lead guitar-centric and this one was full of it.  Jeff Georges smack you round the head solo on ‘I Tried' by We are Harlot was especially cool, as was the outro guitar work from Hammett and Hetfield on ‘The Day That Never Comes'.  Mike Orlando's fretwork on Angel Sky would certainly qualify as notifiable.  You probably know by now that as with infectious diseases, where some are classed as notifiable because they are high in ‘you better give a fuckness', so too, in my world, are guitar solos. Consequently, it is my duty to notify you every time you are about to hear one.  There was a small little tribute to a giant of a man, Fanie Marais who sadly passed away this week, it's still an open wound for me.  Fanie was one of the nicest guys in the SA Music scene and he'll be sorely missed.  He produced and Engineered all The Uninvited albums and he was a very close friend, he loved life and to say cheers I played him our beloved Rolling Stones with Sad, Sad, Sad.  Artists featured included:  Megadeth, The Professionals, Nibs Van Der Spuy, Rainbow, Green Day, Led Zeppelin, Animal Bites, Metallica, We Are Harlot, Walking Papers, Sixx:A.M., Dokken, Airbourne, Joe Bonamassa, Accept, L:ast In Line, Audioslave, Windowpane, Pearl Jam, Oasis, The Rolling Stones, 12th Avenue, W.A.S.P.  Adrenaline Mob, Mark Morton and Rush

In the words of a listener, Episode 29 was “really cool, good energy”.  I have to agree wholeheartedly.  The show was recorded at midnight on 26 July 2019.  It was probably one of the first shows to wish Mick Jagger a very happy 76th birthday.  We played ‘Bitch' to celebrate, taken from the Live in Atlantic City album.  The show kicked off with Metallica and we didn't stop rocking for  the next two hours.  There was a wonderful part where we went from Slayer to Dylan and it was like someone had poured cool water over the entire world.  It felt like the whole planet was on fire and then Bob came and soothed our souls.  Another great part was listening to Put That Record On by Hinder where Austin Winkler sings “I know it's only rock and roll but it's the soundtrack of our lives”.  Those words sum up the whole ethos of the Story of Rock and Roll, this music is important, we love it and it is indeed the soundtrack to our lives.   Artists featured on Episode 29 included Metallica, Skid Row, Jack Hammer, Bush, Judas Priest, Halestorm, The Police, Mustasch, Rush, Sammy Hagar, Aerosmith, Jerry Cantrell, The Rolling Stones, Matthew Good Band, Slayer, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Kiss, Tesla, The Uninvited, Madness, Austin Gold, Cold Chisel Avenged Sevenfold, Windowpane and Hinder.  As usual I was out of time and I played out with an amazing new track by The Wildhearts called Let ‘Em Go , which cut off due to podcast length restrictions so I'll be playing that again soon.

Le Coeur Au Bout Des Doigts – Jacqueline Taieb Who can resist retro French songs? We can’t! Suckcess – Michael Rault Michael Rault is an up-and-coming, retro-style garage rocker from Canada who played a few great shows in Chicago recently. Windowpane – Mild High Club This Chicago/Los Angeles group creates groovy, trippy tunes that make it feel like the 70s all over again. School – Frankie Cosmos The daughter of actors Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates, Greta Kline aka Frankie Cosmos is making quite a splash in the indie world with her lo-fi music. Synth Song – The Symposium Elmhurst, Illinois natives The Symposium are making the music we wanted The Strokes to keep making after their first couple albums. Master Splinter – Heaters This Grand Rapids, Michigan-based group creates a haunting, modern take on 60s psych and rock n roll. Get Ready – Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band A great jazz-based take on the Temptations classic. Ace of Spades – Link Wray It seems like the guitar icon and rock pioneer never made a bad song. Catamaran – Allah-Las The Allah-Las instantly transport you to a far-off indie rock beach.
