This week on Nice Games Club we talk about Naming Things and Rhythm Games! Stephen lays down a beat, Martha brings up fuzzy math and Mark uses every excuse to talk about Star Trek. Editor’s note: We found out recently that my co-hosts didn’t realize that when I edit episodes I don’t always pull an actual quote from the episode as its title? I’m a rebel and my humor cannot be constrained by such formalities. This week’s title is a great Irish music joke. Gan ainm in Irish means ‘no name’. Whenever someone asks you the name of a tune but you can’t remember, you just say with a cheeky grin- “oh, it’s called Gan Ainm” and they are none the wiser until they look up what it means. Its random language prompts us to reflect on some of the aspects of game interfaces that we just take for granted, and talk a bit about what makes a game a “game designer’s game.” Also, we speculate about how police jurisdiction works on trains.   Find the game here: http://warpdoor.com/2019/04/23/zephyr/

My guest today is Adriel Wallick a programmer, developer and creator of the Train Jam, an annual game jam that, unsurprisingly, takes place on a train as it travels across the US toward GDC. We talk about juggling work and creativity, living in the Netherlands, making a game a week for a whole year, the origins of Train Jam, transitioning from working on satellites to the videogame industry and why 1997 was such a vintage year. We hit on a ton of games too, the endless exploration of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, why Thomas was Alone was the perfect game at the perfect time and the gut wrenching laughter of QWOP - The Opera. We also light a candle for the tireless footsoldiers of GameFAQs. What is a man? (flings his wine glass aside) A miserable little pile of secrets! But enough talk... Have at you! His Train Jam game, Track Trek, was made in collaboration with Matt Gambell, Keaton White, and Craig Barnes and is available for all to play (as long as you have two Xbox controllers). We also discuss GDC experiences, unsuccessful game pitches, and determining success. The conference brought its own share of meaty topics, including unionization in the games industry, the future of GDC, and the current American political climate’s effect on international developers’ attendance, most readily seen in the #1ReasonToBe panel. We conclude by catching up on Will’s game — working title: Oddish Adventure — currently at version 0.0.3, and Mike updates us on Clash Cup Turbo’s development and multiplayer beta. One of the great podcasts for songwriters and producers is Composer Quest. The show tackles making music from all different angles and takes wisdom from the host, Charlie McCarron, and a wide array of guests. Recently the show finished its final episode with a 12-city world tour. I had the pleasure to speak with Charlie about music, his work, and the community of musicians he met while hosting Composer Quest.  Listen on iTunes or Stitcher or Google Play Support the Podcast on Patreon Show Notes: Composer Quest - A Songwriting and Music Composition Podcast, hosted by Charlie McCarron Charlie's Music Production Lessons - A shorter, tutorial-style podcast Train Jam 2017 - Musicians and game developers travel from Chicago to San Francisco, creating the entire 52-hour journey. We’re easing ourselves into GDC week with a low-key hotel room recording, but there is nothing low-key about our brilliant guests. Adriel Wallick fills us in on how Train Jam went, Rami Ismail from Vlambeer talks to us about his talks this year, Unity’s Kerry Turner tells us what it’s like being on a booth. We’re also joined by The New Yorker’s Simon Parkin, Shailesh Prabhu from Cape,  Mediocre’s Henrik Johansson, and Runa Haukland and Henriette Myrlund from Splash Jam. If that’s us at low-key, imagine where we’ll be by the end of the week.

This episode was actually recorded two weeks ago so prepare yourself for vintage/retro One Life Left. Ann had a karaoke injury, Simon was in a grump and Ste was possibly replaced by an imposter so we had to use the latest in eye tracking technology to suss him out.Luckily we had an excellent Super-Special Guest in Ground Shatter's James Parker who came all the way from Bristol just to be on our show. Actually, this is why the episode is two weeks late as knowing the state of Britain's public transport he'll probably only just be getting home now! He told us what it was like to work with Mike Bithell before fame changed him, what you buy when you quit your job and - more importantly - a bit about the King of Fighters style game that he's working on.And that's not all! We also had Vlambeer's Rami Ismail and the Train Jam's Adriel Wallick dropping in. Rami talked about his games distribution helpsite / Lady Diana's dead boyfriend tribute site http://dodistribute.com/ whilst Adriel needed hashtag branding advice for the next Train Jam that's going to be held. Annoyingly it's not being held the day before Wednesday otherwise the most apt hashtag would be #ChooChooChoosday. We also had Sega Badawi make a recorded appearance and lots of amazing letters from our amazing listeners. Hope you enjoy the summer holidays!Cheerio!Team OLL xLinks:https://twitter.com/GamesWriting http://groundshatter.comhttps://twitter.com/MsMinotaurhttps://twitter.com/tha_ramihttp://dodistribute.com/http://Msminotaur.comTrack list:1.
