In our very 51st episode, join us as we journey to Rory's ancestral homeland and embark on a good old fashioned hard-boiled detective caper with all the hallmarks of a classic neo-noir thriller: saxophone music, someone's bare asshole, a GameFAQs guide, etc. Inspired by the 2012 film 'Grabbers'.
Bryn, Chris, and John discuss the shape of nostalgia, gameFAQs, Israel's response to Ireland's recognition of Palestine, Javier Milei's big concert, the coup attempt in the Congo, the death of the Iranian president, and an attempt to steal Graceland outro // https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXvKl5F5Rz4 For twice as many episodes, subscribe at patreon.com/beepbeeplettuce
Kotaku is deprioritizing news in favor of guides - which leads into a discussion of "Evergreen Content" vs "Topical Content" when it comes to content creation. We go over the Game Developers Choice Awards - which is the awards show everyone wants when The Game Awards happen, but nobody actually watches. Sony halts production on the PlayStation VR2 headsets because nobody is buying them. Then we talk to Rob about evergreen vs. topical content.
Gotta admit folks, the energy on this one is a little weird. Nevertheless! Join Joseph Martin, Bly Ryder, and Dana Dan the Leaf as they explore some of gaming's best polished-glass-in-garbage-can metaphors on this month's episode of the GCPC, featuring such discussions as - Remember, we're not doing the videogames awards yet - Leaf gives us the Paralives scoop - The many ways The Sims 4 is a bad videogame yet people still play it - Blu's taste in videogames makes it hard to come up with recommendations - Joe lists his least favorite Mega Man game of each series - From strategy guides to GameFAQs to wikis, what's next for how to figure out a videogame? - Joe can't finish a Zelda game - Blu is somehow the only one who played a videogame despite having a broken finger [Podcast Intro/Outro “5 is Average” by Meteo Xavier]

It's been a busy week for gaming news, from shakeups at ZA/UM, the studio behind Disco Elysium, to rumors of a Horizon Zero Dawn remake, and the acquisition by Fandom of various websites, including Giant Bomb and GameFAQs. After the break, Rob realizes he might've have made a mistake the first time he played Isonso, Patrick is enjoying working through trauma via dream dodgeball in Desta, and Ren is praying that more indie horror devs let vibes carry them instead of chases and puzzles in The Fridge is Red. Then, a quick dip in the Question Bucket has us contemplating what we'd do with infinite baked goods.Discussed: ZA/UM 0:39, Fandom Acquisitions 12:06, Horizon Zero Dawn Remake 23:06, Pokemon Unite 34:00, Isonzo 43:18, Desta 55:22, The Question Bucket 1:13:32, Outro and Announcements 1:52:49 Hosted on Acast. First of all, we'd like to thank the amazing yurricanes for working with us to create the featured image for this episode. I think you'll agree that it's an amazing piece of art, and you should definitely check out their work. We'd also like to thank Georgie (aka ChapSketch) for working with Squidge on the episode artwork for the entire New Cupboard of Shame series. Head on over to Georgie's Etsy page to commission some work from her. You really should, as she's blooming brilliant.Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Discord server, Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page.Squidge invited Jay to make his first appearance on the Cupboard of Shame, and he brought along a white whale of sorts. What do Arnie, Sly Stallone, and trashy 80s cyberpunk movies have in common? And why is Jay recommending running, head first, into walls? This CoS will answer those questions and more. Here's a sample of the full show notes - make sure to click through and check them out.Content WarningSquidge was fully in charge of hosting, producing and editing this episode. As such, he decided to leave the few swears in the episode without bleeping them. This was done for comedy reasons, as we felt that there is very little in the episode which could offend most listeners. Please listen responsibly.Show NotesSquidge wanted to take a shiny new look at The Cupboard of Shame. The difference being that he wanted to invite some familiar voices onto the show, one at a time, and discuss one game that they want to jettison into the Cupboard of Shame. This being the fifth episode in the new series, he invited Andrew "Podcast Collector" Dickinson to dispatch something into the devious - and totally real cupboard - cupboard. As a quick reminder, Squidge describes The Cupboard of Shame as:The idea behind it is games that you have bought in your past, played it, but you don't know why you bought [them] but you did anyway.Any complaints that you have about the game; why you want to stick it in the Cupboard of Shame. We'll talk about the good points and the bad points [of the game], and we'll share some fun facts about the game.- SquidgePrevious Entries into the Cupboard of ShameThe Cupboard of Shame reboot has only seen two entries so far: Chief Problems decided that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim needed to be stored behind the walnut doors of destiny in episode 136 Lulu wanted to jettison Chaos Legion to the nether realms of the electronically challenged cupboard in episode 138 Sean wanted to yeet Risk of Rain 2 into the underbelly of the cupboard in episode 139 Ginger wished to send Final Fantasy X-2 into the depths of cheap MDF that is the cupboard in episode 140 AndrewD was on the fence about Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days and whether it should have been in the Cupboard of Shame, in episode 141 JonnyG spoke about the weird-a-thon that is Deadly Premonition is episode 142 Prior to the Cupboard of Shame reboot, Squidge had challenged both G and himself to put some titles into the Cupboard of Shame. The titles that they chose include: Iron Man the Movie Video Game WET Rambo: The Video Game Crackdown Final Fantasy XIII You can hear their discussion on these games (and a few more) in episode 47: The Cupboard of Shame - here's a link to that episode. All of the "classic" Cupboard of Shame episodes - aka before Squidge's 2022 sexy reboot - can be found here.Jay's Chosen GameAnd Squidge got directly into the topic of discussion: which game would you like to put into the Cupboard of Shame:It's actually three games, but the game that I want to throw into the Cupboard of Shame is called "Power Blade 2" on the NES. But I can't talk about Power Blade 2 without talking about Power Blade. And I can't talk about Power Blade without talking about Power Blazer- JayBut using Squidge's rules, it's not possible to throw more than one game in at once. So Jay had to pick just one game:Power Blade 2 is what I would like to nominate to be thrown into the Cupboard of Shame- JayOr for those tuning in from Japan - and there are more than a few of you, if our podcast hosting stats are to be believed - Jay is referring to "Captain Saver".But before he could talk about Power Blade 2, Jay needed to talk about Power Blade:So Power Blade is a game for the NES, right? In this game, you play totally-not-Arnold-Schwarzenegger who runs around in '80s style tank-top [attire] and everything. He doesn't use his fists, doesn't use guns. He uses a boomerang - which is vaguely daft as it is, right? And that's all you really need to know.... they took a game called Power Blazer which was released in Japan in around 1990-1991, which was a Mega Man clone... except that you used a boomerang. When the [locationsation] over to the UK and US happened, **EVERYTHING** about the game changed except for the boomerang and the music.- JaySquidge regaled us with both of the stories presented on Wikipedia, and on GameFAQs. First up, Wikipedia:After years of fighting that took millions of casualties, Earth is recovering from the revolts of the 22nd century. In 2192, New Earth has a master computer that holds a database of off colony planets. In the wrong hands, the database could prove fatal. One day aliens attack the master computer, making the Master Control Program malfunction.Nova, a lord of the ancient Power Blade, is summoned to take care of the situation. The Power Blade is a glowing energy boomerang that Nova uses to defend himself.- SquidgeAnd now, GameFAQS:22ND CENTURY WARRIOR. (in all caps, like you're shouting)When New Earth's master computer is attacked by aliens, only Nova, lord of the ancient Power Blade, can battle through the control centre and restore the database- SquidgeSquidge also wrote his own intro:On his way to head office to complain about tickets that he bought to see Cyborg One Direction, only to be shocked that they were genuine, Nova gets a new mission: to stop a Python implementation test gone wrong. It all started when machine learning picture creation tool [Dall-e] gained sentience and started forging passports. From there, it took to reading the stock market; and before you knew it, it took over sectors of production & commerce in {INSERT FUTURE CITY NAME HERE}.- SquidgeFull Show NotesMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, and some links to related things.Have you ever played Power Blade 2? I can't believe she flipped a coin to decide the degree she'd do. If it had fallen differently, she might have been on an archaeological dig somewhere now, in Egypt, looking at ancient bones. But instead she's here as the guides editor of Eurogamer, looking at ancient writers like me. She is Lottie Lynn and much to our benefit, the coin she flipped landed on 'writing' instead, something that's been a driving passion in her life since forever. She's published short stories and is even working on not one but two novels at the same time, as you do. Moreover, she's one of the only people I know to still write a lot of this by hand. She fills piles of notebooks with meticulous handwriting, even while sitting by her computer in the office - a hybrid approach, I suppose she'd call it. So how does that land her in guides? Well, I was surprised to discover she'd written some as a teenager for GameFAQs, though they don't exist any more. Apparently she'd always had an eye on games journalism, and when working as a farm labourer (!) wasn't quite ticking the box, she gave herself a year to pursue a dream instead. And look how it turned out. Lottie is a font of knowledge on all things guides, of course. She talks me through how they come together, what makes a good guide, and shares lots of really useful advice for anyone considering that avenue into games. Lottie is also a font of knowledge about RuneScape, a defining game in her life, one she's played for 16 years now. It's even partially responsible for jump-starting her career. And it's a curious game, one I'll admit I didn't fully understand, as I looked down my nose at it from my other-MMO background - not until I started to appreciate the way people actually play it. Lottie, of course, explains it better. So this is Lottie Lynn and this is episode 17 of One-to-one (the series formerly known as The New Eurogamer Podcast). I hope you enjoy it. Well, we did this to ourselves. We vote on these games and we messed up. This month we played the absolute definition of a DS cash-in licensed trash pile, Homie Rollerz. We're not happy about it either, but we found enough to talk about in this shovelware "classic". There's like 10 minutes of this episode where we basically write a GameFAQs guide for this game, so it was all worth it. Buon ascolto! The difference being that he wanted to invite some familiar voices onto the show, one at a time, and discuss one game that they want to jettison into the Cupboard of Shame. For his second episode on the eponymous - and totally real cupboard - cupboard, he could think of none better than Lulu.As a quick reminder, Squidge describes The Cupboard of Shame as:The idea behind it is games that you have bought in your past, played it, but you don't know why you bought [them] but you did anyway.Any complaints that you have about the game; why you want to stick it in the Cupboard of Shame. We'll talk about the good points and the bad points [of the game], and we'll share some fun facts about the game.- SquidgePrevious Entries into the Cupboard of ShameThe Cupboard of Shame reboot has only seen one entry so far, which was when Chief Problems decided that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim needed to be stored behind the walnut doors of destiny. You can hear Chief's reasoning behind his choice on episode 136 - which you can listen to here.Prior to the Cupboard of Shame reboot, Squidge has challenged both G and himself to put some titles into the Cupboard of Shame. The titles that they chose include: Iron Man the Movie Video Game WET Rambo: The Video Game Crackdown Final Fantasy XIII You can hear their discussion on these games (and a few more) in episode 47: The Cupboard of Shame - here's a link to that episode.Lulu's Chosen GameSquidge started this episode strongly:Any road, we've gone completely off topic- SquidgeAnd that was in the first three minutes of the episode. But very shortly after that, he asked Lulu for the title of the one game that she would like to discuss:I did have a long think about this, I'll be perfectly honest. But every time I thought about it, one game kept coming up and it was: Chaos Legion- LuluBut before they could discuss the game, Squidge needed to describe the game's setup:Two men, once friends, now have their fates tied together by the death of a young maiden. Each man holds the key to a sacred glyph that, when combined with the other two, can open the Gateway of Chaos and lead the people to the Red Moon.- GameFaqs; https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps2/562317-chaos-legionTalk about "dun dun duuuun"He also wanted to give a description of when he first encountered the game - you know, for science and stuff:It was 2003, I was 14. It was the weekend. Reallising as I woke up, that due to exceptional circumstances I was awake, it was very real to me that for the most of the day I would be unsupervised. Anything could happen. However, I had recently picked up a game called "Chaos Legion", and hilarity ensued. As you might imagine- SquidgeBut why did Lulu buy this game?I just remember seeing the trailer playing a lot in [my local GAME] store. And I really, really liked the style of it. It was kind of like gothic and a little bit steampunky, and that is entirely my jam.- LuluWhat's So Bad About it?Any discussion of a bad game needs to cover what's so bad about the game. So Squidge asked, "what's so bad about this game?"I do remember 1) the controls being a little bit janky (and that's being nice), and 2) the gameplay being kinda repetitive.- LuluNaff controls and repetitive gameplay is not what you want from a - pause for effect whilst we check the box - Capcom game?! Seriously? Capcom made this?I remember thinking, "haven't I done this level already?" because they all started looking very, very samey. I know that with early Devil May Cry games they were corridor simulators. But at least with the Devil May Cry games, they had a good story. The Chaos Legion story felt a bit flat.- LuluAnother criticism was the difficulty and the repetitive nature of having to replay previous missions, multiple times in a row, in order to get the required exp level to play the next level.Again, I play [Final Fantasy XIV] and that's just grinding [for experience points]. But there comes a point where you're just like, "I just want to progress." It doesn't feel like there's an end in sight.- LuluSponsor MessageGrab some popcorn and find your seats. That's right, I even write this whole thing out. A couple of things about me: I love the Super Smash Bros. franchise, especially Melee. My wife, Jen, is my biggest supporter and I would not be here without her. To our two children, Ellie and Ezra, I'm proud to be your Daddy. Jen and I believe in the gospel of Jesus, which declares: “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 ESV As of the beginning of Season 2, this is what my relationship to Melee looks like: I am only a spectator and podcaster. I have no internet at the apartment, so until we move I shall spectate and support via podcasting about Melee and the community. One of my main goals for this podcast is to emulate what I hope to see in the Smash Community at large: a welcoming and safe environment. One example is that I'm not going to swear that much, although my guests might swear slightly more often so that is why this podcast is marked as explicit content, or at least it should be. Anchor is confusing sometimes. The point is, I want listeners and guests alike to feel welcome and safe while they're here, so aside from occasional swearing I will try to limit explicit content to accomplish that. Trigger warnings and heads-up type stuff will be used as I see fit. Don't get your hopes up for time-stamps, because this is a bit of a lazy podcast as well. Despite that, I try my best to give credit where credit is due in regards to sources and such. I also make a concerted effort to avoid ripping other people's content, but if anyone feels that I did that kind of stuff, my DM's are open on Twitter; we can get it figured out. Did I say something that offended you? Usually I am trying not to be offensive to anyone, but my attempts at humor might result in that. Either that or I'm being dumb. Either way, feel free to reach out and educate me so that you and I can level up :) Jesse's Twitter: https://mobile.twitter.com/cyfer003 BSM Twitter: https://twitter.com/bsmpod?s=21 #BSMPod — Credits — Podcast Logo: original artwork by Blake Wall; used with permission. Huge apologies for last week, but we realized entirely too late that our show recording would in fact fall on Halloween and we would be down to like two people. As a result we took the week off and now return with one of those shows that just has a random assemblage of topics. We talk a little bit about N7 Day actually having announcements and the impending re-release of the Mass Effect Trilogy that is likely to disappoint. We talk about the Star Wars Christmas special and the plans to make a brand new version which will as a result immediately become the best version. We talk a very brief bit about the Mandalorian in a relatively spoiler free manner. Bel talks a bit about the new guidance from Blizzard making key broadcasting software a bannable offense and putting an end to a specific kind of multi-boxing. Tam talks about Knights and Bikes as it is this mashup of Night in the Woods and Castle Crashers. Whether it’s censoring games, removing old games from its digital storefront, or recording players’ private chats, Sony keeps screwing up and handing easy wins to Microsoft. We talk about how this will hurt the PlayStation brand next generation along with Kotaku being hypocritical about Balder’s Gate 3’s character creator, games journalists wanting spiders in games censored, Vice using communism to criticize “sexism” in old GameFAQs guides, and how Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla’s protagonist can be both male and female canonically.

THIS WEEK'S EPISODE: Remember the little instruction booklets that used to come with games? We miss those little guys. Also, we're pretty sure that printed strategy guides still exist, but the existence of the internet has surely killed off most of those. Thanks, GameFAQS. BRING BACK INSTRUCTION BOOKLETS, YOU COWARDS!
I'm back with a blazing new episode that will be for everyone. This time I talk about video games in my life. For years I was always the guy to beat until I had to train #Mini00veride how to become the best gamer she could be. During this time gaming competitions and E-Sports had evolved and Mini is holding her own. So now it's time to prove to the world how great I can be while Pawning Newbs and playing as many games as I can. She's a beast with her friends at Fortnite so more Warzone and MK 11 are some amongst many games that I'm ready to #BringThePain to. I talk about my patterns from an Atari 2600 all the way to the Ps4. How I acquired each system and the friends that were with me along the way. I have had an amazing amount of friends that has always made me stay on top. Yes I was the friends to beat so #Enjoy your journey through 40 years of gaming. I own no rights to the music used in this episode.

My guest today is Adriel Wallick a programmer, developer and creator of the Train Jam, an annual game jam that, unsurprisingly, takes place on a train as it travels across the US toward GDC. We talk about juggling work and creativity, living in the Netherlands, making a game a week for a whole year, the origins of Train Jam, transitioning from working on satellites to the videogame industry and why 1997 was such a vintage year. We hit on a ton of games too, the endless exploration of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, why Thomas was Alone was the perfect game at the perfect time and the gut wrenching laughter of QWOP - The Opera. We also light a candle for the tireless footsoldiers of GameFAQs. What is a man? (flings his wine glass aside) A miserable little pile of secrets! But enough talk... Have at you! I arrive on the playground every day carrying my tomes of Prima Strategy Guides and printouts from GameFaqs. I sit atop the slide like a mad king as peasants bring their GameBoy Colors and crowd around the rungs, eager to climb up and allow me to bless them with my wisdom. I tell them "Nay, you must climb the slide to speak to me. The ladder's rungs are for I alone to climb." They only make it halfway up before the slide takes hold of them; and like a bowling ball they careen down into the masses of other third graders hoping to glimpse into my stack of parchment. I often whisper rumors, like deleting your save file will allow you to capture Mew, like speaking to the phone one million times will bring Ness' father back. They listen to me, because I am the keeper of knowledge, and nobody else has enough room in their backpack to challenge me. --- Games Discussed: Apex Legends, Pokemon Sword & Shield, Final Fantasy IX --- Things Discussed: Stephen thought Crash Bandicoot was real, Third Grade, possible Apex Legends characters, every Pokemon starter, what Pokemon could we feel okay about eating, Pokemon Sword & Shield, Gex, Crash Bandicoot Returns), Fangamer dot com is not a pyramid scheme, Final Fantasy IX, cheat codes are okay, card games
On this episode of the Bit War Veterans we look in to Prima game strategy guides, and other companies like Brady and Versus. When did they start? How are they made? And why did they go under? We read tweets from our followers about the guides they owned and the memories they had of flipping through their pages. The guides we had are precious to us. We look at when they stopped being a useful commodity and turned into more of a collector's item. Is there a place in the future for game guides?
We hope you're enjoying your holiday (for our American listeners), we decided to give you a little bonus episode as a thank you for listening! There is an affiliate link in this post. I fell in love with the first Dead Rising. When the sequel's demo was released(Case Zero), I played through that with the new protagonist Chuck Greene. He wasn't as fun as Frank West(the hero of the first game). Mr. West is the man! I'm so glad I waited to play this version. The initial game was released 2010. This version was released in 2011. This game mixes intensity with an abundance of fun. Here are my pros and cons. There are spoilers. Pros: -Variety is fun. -The game doesn't take itself too seriously. -The map never got boring. Still discovered new areas late in the game. -Sandbox mode saved me from starting my game over. A feature not in the first game. Cons: -Number of survivors brought back to the safe house or psychos defeated doesn't change the game ending. No incentive to fight them all or save them all. Unless you're a completionist. Doesn't give me much motivation to replay the game. -The game is mainly fetch quests with a story. I admittedly used GameFaqs and their walkthroughs to finish the game as I did get stuck in parts. In the past, I'd feel guilty doing this. Presently that shame is gone. There are loads of games I'd like to play and using this info saves time! This is a seven-year-old game; it still holds up! Smash News GoNintendo.com is reporting that Sakurai hasn't been killing himself with the latest Smash he’s only working 10-10 fives days a week. Read full article here. In the game industry, there’s a lot of overtime, all-nighters, and coming in on holidays! It’s a practice that has been occurring for a long time. That suddenly changed in recent years, though. Actually, if you look at other companies and even myself, 10:00 p.m. is when everyone goes home. Or rather, maybe we’re getting shut out? I go to work at 10:00 a.m., so I usually spend about 10 hours working each day. In the past, it wasn’t that uncommon to work until 1 or 2 in the morning so compared to those days, I’m taking it easy. GameFAQs post with possible E3 leaks. Read the full article here Two trailers for Smash Bros for Switch are the last things. One reveals Captain Toad, the other reveals Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, this is why they’ve been quiet about the Switch version of the trilogy. Gameplay is shown and is a mix of Smash 4 and Melee, being very colorful yet detailed. Coming out September alongside the Online Service. Ice Climbers are set to be revealed during the Treehouse Live. Another rumor in this post is that Wario and Waluigi coming to Odyssey do you think that this could foreshadow Waluigi coming to Smash? The rumored launch date for Online Service is Monday, Sept 24th. I don’t know if that date will hold true, if it does I don’t think Smash will launch the same day, it will either come out the Friday before and give everyone a free weekend to play Smash online or launch the following Friday after online has launched, What we want to see from online with Smash 5 Smash Bros Con August 9th-12 get all the details here Beyond the Smash is going on right now! In this, the 84th gathering of The Power Pals, we talk 80's Cartoons, Black Panther, Bloodborne and People lying on GameFAQs... Enjoy!
Since 1995, GameFAQs has served as a hub for video game walkthroughs and strategies. While this is of little concern to our podcast, the fact that this website also contains a forum where video game enthusiasts can share their thoughts concerns us. Having now read the thoughts they feel are worth sharing, we're simply concerned. This week, The F Plus comes down with a bad case of Frenchman's Leg.
Today's guest is Stephanie Lee. You may know her from her years at IGN, but I've known Stephanie since we were high school kids writing on GameFAQs. We haven't seen each other in a few years, and we have many topics to discuss, like how we came up in the gaming industry, why she abandoned her path as a nutritionist, how she found herself working in Idaho for a well-respected fitness outlet, and why she shifted gears a couple of years ago, decided to live a completely nomadic lifestyle, and found her way to entrepreneurship. You can find Stephanie's newest work at https://thefyslife.com/
The obsessions continue. Dragon Quest is still on the mind. As are classical music in cartoons and associated problems, media treatment of a resurrected D&D, and a particular kind of apple. Plus, our feedback on your feedback.… Continue reading →
Miyamoto, tending his garden, suddenly has a brilliant idea. What if he could recapture the feelings of his childhood in game form? What if it was possible to identify the essence of nature and replicate it on a simple disc. It would be overwhelming, yet familiar. Chaotic, yet calm. Hostile, yet intimate. He toiled with his team for years, until finally the public could join him in the garden. After the sun had set, he opened a laptop, and went to find what the public had said. He did not know if he was truly successful, but he hoped he had reached at least a few. Yet the message he received was not one he understood. This week, our experiment focuses on Nina Freeman, lead designer of Cibele. In addition to exploring the nature of intimacy in video games, we learn how to hate ourselves for playing MMOs, that we're too old for Undertale, and that if I ever want to make Spencer quit caring, I should just bring up sales reports.[MP3 AUDIO]Nina on TwitterCibelePlease help support my Patreon!Try out Loot Crate and support the show!My latest Unboxing video[LINK] Steam estimated to have brought in $4 billion in revenue.[LINK] Why 2016 will be the year of esports[VIDEO] Smite releases a new cinematic trailer[LINK] Undertale is tearing Gamefaqs apartFor a video of this episode go to: https://youtu.be/WpPvhb6un4c
Everyone loves the song "The Gambler," by songsmith Kenny Rogers -- and if anyone says otherwise, they're a LIAR -- but did you know how many advanced poker strategies are tucked away in the lyrical folds and grooves of that tune? Well, you will know, by the end of this episode. Oh boy, do we make sure of that. Suggested talking points: Trollswatch, Office Zoltar, Now You See Me Swear Scenes, Spooky Commentary, Geolocational Brother Tracking, The Meaning of The Gambler
“Anyone who likes pickles are nice people” opens the South Gate guard as we begin Disc 2. This time it’s all Steiner and Garnet, Zidane and his gang are all sequestered into a separate quest. We have a chance encounter with Cinna and Marcus at Summit Station, The game spends an inordinate amount time explaining Fantasy Mass Transit Systems this episode, and Matthew isn’t having any of it. Marcus is out to find Super Soft (A Photo of Matthew’s mom, SICK BURRRRN) and out of a sense of loyalty Garnet and Steiner join him in finding this cure. In this week’s edition of a non-weekly segment, John’s Tips and Tricks, he explains how to make lots of money very quickly. We decide that we are now a political podcast, so get ready for some hot, hot takes. John takes about twenty minutes to steal a Flame Staff from the Black Waltz when you can easily synthesize it later, and John makes some poor life choices. We meet Mr. Ghost, an adorable ghost who loves ore, get killed by some murder plants, and find Vivi’s childhood home. John puts those Stellazios to good use and gets the game breaking Blood Sword. Further discussion points: What Qu’uns sound like, the cyclical nature of aristocratic classes, Steiner actually becomes likable for about ten seconds, the Shakespearean influences, not terrible minigames, Matthew’s advocation of enslaving giant bugs, Matthew’s fan mail, John’s deep love for Shadow Hearts, and much, much more! Okay. Some more.

It’s the end of the year, and the Mappers have arrived a little late and a little weary to talk about the year that is now past and the year that lies ahead. 2015 was a mess of a year, like years often are, and in grand tradition we echew game of the year lists to bring you some memories, some japes, and some feelings. What lies ahead for the podcast? Within are the answers. Then, we turn to the games of yesteryear, for a deep conversation about one of the most highly regarded RPGs of all time, GameFAQs and Starman.net’s own … EarthBound.A big thank you to friend of the show Tracie Mauk for providing the voice of the photographer in this episode. You can get our podcast on iTunes, on Stitcher, or you can download it directly by clicking here. This Month’s Game Club: EarthBoundNext Month’s Game Club: ExpandThings discussed: 2015 Spreadsheet, The Metal Gear Articles, Metals Gear, Zelda, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy VII, Ninja Gaiden Black, Yakuza 3, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, The Crew, Alphabear, Neko Atsume, Binding of Issac: Rebirth, Monster Hunter 4: Ultimate, Bloodborne, Etrian Odyssey, The Walking Dead: Season 2, Crusader Kings 2, EarthBound, the EarthBound guideMusic This EpisodeBlown Away by Kevin MacLeodPhotographer’s Theme by Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu TanakaYour Name Please by Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu TanakaThe Sky Runner by Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu TanakaRunaway Five Left the Building by Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu TanakaOnett Theme by Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu Tanaka

Recorded on November 21st, 2012 with Brian Fife, James Fingal and Thomas Westberg. We’ve seen a dramatic shift in the way games are supported on the internet. Early on, gaming guides and magazines, as well as the occasional online FAQ or spoiler guide, were available, but now it’s almost a given that any game with a reasonable fan base has one or more dedicated websites around tricks, tips and strategies. Two of the biggest changes are that site platforms like wikia make it very easy to create these player-supported websites, and it is now common, particularly for large MMOs, to have the data files for the game reverse engineered. So-called “database” websites can provide a comprehensive list of all the items that could appear in the game, before players have discovered them. Jim, Brian and Tom talk about how these changes have impacted the way we play and interact with games. There’s certainly an opportunity for “help sites” to smooth over a rough patch in an otherwise well-designed game, but jumping directly to the loot tables has the ability to take a lot of the discovery and mystery out of a game… is it even possible to design a game with ‘secrets’ anymore? On this episode of Press Pause Radio we hold hands and venture through the great unknown, as we discuss the history and relevance of strategy guides and walkthroughs. Thankfully we brought along a few "guides" on the trip as well. Matt Clark, a freelance writer featured on MTV, 1up, GamePro and many other publications joins us along with Zy, a top contributor on GameFAQs and writer of several walkthroughs as we contemplate on whether guides and walkthroughs are still needed in gaming today. We will also talk about Double Fine's success on Kickstarter and the upcoming release of the PS Vita. Thanks for listening to the show, and please make sure to check out the site for upcoming articles and reviews currently in the works.

Few franchises permeate the gamer culture as the beloved Legend of Zelda series by Nintendo. From the truly classic 8-bit gilded cartridge of the original, to the megahit Ocarina of Time, to the upcoming Skyward Sword, Zelda games have defined more quintessential gaming experiences than any other series, and was even voted the best game series ever by GameFAQs readers back in 2006. This week we’re joined by Zelda enthusiast and fan artist Benjamin Walton as we talk about the various entries to the series- Our favorite moments in the series, the convoluted timeline, and what we know of Skyward Sword. As a bonus we lead off with an excellent metal remix of ‘Song of Storms’ (from Ocarina of Time- original composer: Koji Kondo) by Scott Houghton titled ‘Raining Blood’. This podcast is rated ‘T’ for ‘Tingle’.
