"..." Installation artist, juggler, balloon artist and first-time game developer William Chyr told himself it would take three months to design a Portal-sized puzzle game. Seven years later, he released a 'counterfactual physics game' that captures the spirit of both M.C. Escher's mind-bending work and the Paris scene in Christopher Nolan's Inception. Thomas, Brian and Chris Worthington chat about the impossible spaces, the minimalist vibes, and puzzle mechanics of this striking game. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_643.mp3 Music featured in this issue: 1.
Manifold Garden is a mind bending puzzle game inspired by MC Escher. Walls become floors, and other rules are broken in this charming, and surprisingly colorful game. While Katana Zero is a fast paced side scroller where you play as an assassin that goes by the name “the dragon” completing contracts in a war torn dystopian world as he tries to come to terms with his past. But things aren't always as real as they seem. Join Kale and Connor as they discuss these two games in its mind-bending, reality-shifting glory. Ben and Tao get jiggy with gravity in colour coded cubic confounder, Manifold Garden. As they get lost explaining its abstract infinity and implausible geometry, they find a lack of boundaries just as thorny in the manifold garden as in Tao’s vegetable patch, they weed out bugs (and I’m not talking ladybirds), deconstruct the ratio of time played to problems solved, and ponder how the sandbox has revolutionised creativity: specifically, whether computational technology has suppressed as much cultural innovation as it may have spawned. No spoilers (for once!)Content Warning: PEGI 13.Clarifications:The original music for Manifold Garden is composed by Laryssa OkadaHere’s the explainer Ben watched on Non-Euclidean Geometry by YouTuber, CodeParade: Christopher Nolan’s short early film was called ‘Doodlebug’ not just ‘Bug’. You can watch it here: Incidentally, if you’re an affectionate critic of Nolan (which is to say, you like his films but think they all suffer from expositional incontinence), you might enjoy comedian Michael Spicer’s take: Here’s the Reddit thread where they confirm the yellow tree cube bug Ben laments: https://www.reddit.com/r/ManifoldGarden/comments/ifydmf/missing_cube_on_a_yellow_tree_bug/ (note the thread is 2 years old!!)Here’s the developer explaining how to load older save versions of the same save file: Game Maker’s Toolkit is presented by Mark Brown on YouTube. Coincidentally, the magnet concept Tao mentions is actually implemented in Qube, the 2011 puzzler from Toxic Games.Antichamber - a hugely similar game to this one - is a first-person puzzle-platform game created by Australian developer Alexander "Demruth" Bruce and released in 2013.Audio extracts:The Shining (1980)The Mighty BooshJesus Walks by Kanye WestThe Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers (2002)The Other Guys (2010)The Witness challenge musicReturn of the Obra Dinn OST by Lukas PopeUrban Species - I WonderCoherence (2013)QubeAntichamberDoodlebug by Christopher Nolan (1997)BBC Sherlock feat. #002 - Ever considered what it's like to be a sound designer on your favorite video games? Join Connor as he interviews Martin Kvale (Owlboy, Bad North, Among the Sleep & Manifold Garden), about all-things creative. You'll learn how Martin got started with sound design, and its link to music production. He shares some of his critical thoughts on sound design and teaches you about non-linearity (a concept which separates games from movies). You'll learn a bit about his experience working on titles such as Among the Sleep, Bad North & more, as well as how good work will get you noticed in the industry. Martin shares his love for game jams as a tool for personal development and bares all on the table about his experience with burnout, sharing honest advice about what to do to avoid it or overcome it (should you feel it too!). You'll gain insight to the advantage small teams and individuals can have over big ones and tips for overcoming distraction by dill-dallying. Martin shares his method for creating a world of sound for a game and writing a contract (which is something he's come to appreciate over the years. You'll hear about the unfortunate downside of working your dream job and we have an enthusiastic chat about the wonderful and perplexing portable synthesizer and tape machine we both own called the OP-1. We'll also touch on the reasons why communication can be a crucial, yet overlooked skill in the game industry. Be sure to stick around to the end, because we'll close by asking Martin what one piece of advice he would ask himself if he were to start all over again. On today's show, Marc goes crazy with the tangents as they talk about switching over to Google Chrome after 15+ years with Mozilla Firefox and buying a new laptop for the first time in seven years. After that, they touch briefly on some of the news that came out of Gamescom: Opening Night Live 2020 before finally getting to what they've been playing, including Manifold Garden, Street Power Soccer, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Infinite Combate, Linn: Path of Orchards, and more. Anyway, something-something me be rambling while these zombies be shambling, cheers and enjoy the anime-zing(ly nonsensical) show. Anyway, that's it and that's all folks. If you're feeling extra generous, you can become a patron, donate a little something-something, or subscribe to show your support for the site, the plentiful podcasts, the various videos, the absurd art, and all of the other nonsense we make over here at Pixelated Sausage. Thanks for being a fan.
