That's right - our old friends Eiffel and Hilbert are back with important news! There's a new audio fiction series called Hit Singles, created by Wolf 359 creator Gabriel Urbina and produced by Urbina, Sarah Shachat, and Zach Valenti! It's a romantic comedy all about friendship, love, the struggles of trying to make it in a big city, and loving music way too much. You can listen to the show over on Audible. If you have an Audible Plus membership, you can listen to it at no additional cost. (And if you still have a free trial, you can listen to it for free for 30 days.) Besides the show's three producers, you'll also hear Wolf 359 alumni Noah Masur, Zach Libresco, Michelle Agresti, and Mary Kate Wiles in the series. (As well as veterans from many of our sibling series, such as The Bright Sessions, Life With Leo(h), and 36 Questions!) It was a real labor of love, and we'd love to help it find as wide an audience as it can. So please check it out, and, if you love it as much as we think you will, please leave a rating and a review. Here is the official description for Hit Singles: From the creators of the hit audio drama Wolf 359 and with original music by Jeremy Warmsley comes a modern story about friendship, love, and chosen family starring Evangeline Young (Emergence), Nicholas Podany (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), Simone Policano (Blue Bloods), Julia Rehwald (Fear Street), Briggon Snow (Masters of Sex) and a full cast. A captivating listen perfect for fans of New Girl and High Fidelity. When struggling DJ Faith Adler comes to couch surf with her best friend Tori in NYC, she finds herself drawn into the world of Tori's eclectic friend group. Right from her chaotic first night, Faith's new friends take her under their wing and help her navigate the ups and downs of trying to make it as an artist in the big city. There's Tori, the bubbly one; Ginah, the high-strung but loyal one; Matt, the flirtatious one; and David, the cynical one. Tori and Ginah's apartment becomes a sanctuary where lasting bonds are forged over late nights, drink-filled conversations, impromptu dance parties, and the occasional Sense and Sensibility marathon. Falling in love definitely isn't part of Faith's plan, but that all changes when she meets David, a former law student (and current bartender) who has recently come to the conclusion that romance is for suckers and sworn it off altogether. From the moment they meet at a New Year's in the Summer party, their will-they-or-won't-they chemistry is electric. As Faith and David grow closer over whiskey-soaked nights and heart-to-heart talks on the fire escape, their flirtation deepens into something more meaningful. Are they friends? Lovers? Romantic partners? Casual sex acquaintances? The answer is, simultaneously, all and none of the above. Let the overthinking commence! With rich character development and an ensemble cast that feels like friends you've known forever, Hit Singles deftly balances comedy, romance, and poignant drama. It's a beautifully rendered celebration of the family we choose, the cities that choose us back, and the life-altering power of human connection. * * * Today's message features the sound effect UI Seatbelt Signal by newlocknew. This is a crossover episode between The Amelia Project and Greater Boston, recorded live at The London Podcast Festival! What happens when these two fiction podcasts meet? Greater Boston acting legend Mark Whalberg hates fellow Greater Boston acting legend Matt Damon. One of the last things Mark Whalberg did before Matt Damon died was fistfight Matt Damon on a doomed, speeding train. But then Matt Damon sacrificed his life to save the passengers on that train. And so now Matt Damon is no more, but the memory of Matt Damon lives on. Now Matt Damon is not remembered as much more than merely an actor; he is Matt Damon, Transit Hero. And Mark Whalberg? He's known as just a survivor floundering in Matt Damon's shadow, which grows taller even in death. But Mark Whalberg has a plan. Mark Whalberg can die just like Matt Damon. Mark Whalberg is going to visit The Amelia Project to fake his own death and live on as someone who will receive the respect, accolades, and attention he righteously deserves. Dying and being reborn with the Amelia process will be Mark Whalberg's greatest role yet. Featuring Alan Burgon, Hemi Yeroham, Jeff Van Dreason, Alexander Danner, Felix Trench and Zach Valenti. UNSEEN is the new urban fantasy audio fiction podcast by Long Story Short Productions. The premise behind it is simple: In a world where magic is real but invisible to almost everyone, the few magical beings that do exist struggle, every day, just to be seen. Season one of UNSEEN will feature ten different stories of identity, connection, and personhood (and, of course, magic) in the modern world. Some of them will be thrilling adventures. Others may be sad and melancholic. Some may be creepy and unsettling. Each of them will feature a single performer, guiding the audience through a new, original modern fantasy landscape. Every week, a new story. A new voice. A new glimpse into the world of magic.   Unseen was created by Gabriel Urbina, Sarah Shachat, and Zach Valenti. Wolf 359 Feed Update: The Great Advertising Experiment Begins October 6th, 2021

Wolf 359

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 5, 2021 3:39

Hello Dear Listeners! It's Doug Eiffel.. also known Executive Producer and actor Zach Valenti here with a brief announcement. Wolf 359 has been finished for… oh man, almost four years now. When Gabriel and I first set out to make the show in early 2014, we were fresh out of film school and excited to tell big, ambitious stories… but without the means to do so in film or TV. But having grown up on a steady diet of radio plays and full-cast audiobooks, and seeing the success of modern audio fiction podcasts, we decided to try our hands at making movies for your ears.Several years and credit cards later, we were shocked by the groundswell of support of you, our amazing listeners. By the time we published the finale, the monthly Patreon funds completely reimbursed all our debt and allowed us to make more of the show than we ever dreamed of while paying everyone involved in the series a modest sum for their hard work. All the while, we've kept Wolf 359 completely ad free. While it took a long, long time for ads to even be an option, we felt it was important to keep the listening experience as uninterrupted as possible while we were actively publishing.Four years later, though, we see an opportunity to turn the modest sum we've been able to pay the people that made this series into a meaningful sum. We've never stopped looking for ways for all the talented humans responsible for Wolf 359 to share in its success. And with the series being downloaded more than ever, we feel that now is the time to run the great advertising experiment. And so, beginning on Wednesday, October 6th, you'll start to hear a minute or two of advertisements before the start and after the end of most episodes of Wolf 359. Some episodes may even contain mid-roll where we find an appropriate space for an ad break. We want to let you know this change is coming, and that the version of the feed you have now, much like the Hephaestus itself, is about to go through an overhaul. We also want you to know that we're running this experiment for one reason only: to get money into the hands of the amazing artists who worked on this show, both for their contributions to the series, and so they can all go make more amazing art in podcasting and beyond. If that's exciting to you, we'll be running a listener survey sometime in the next month and would really love your participation. It should only take about 5 minutes and will go a long way towards making this experiment a success. If you want to be notified when the survey is ready, just enter your email at www.wolf359.fm/survey and we'll drop you a line when it's hot off the press. And if you would like to help us do that and listen to the show without hearing any ads, well, the good news is: you can! Or… you will be able to real soon. We're working with Patreon to bring back our old creator page, where for just $1 a month, you will have access to an ad-free feed of Wolf 359. Keep an eye on this feed, as well as our Twitter page @Wolf359Radio for news on that front.Alright! That's all for now. As ever, thank you so much for listening.https://www.wolf359.fm/news/2021/10/5/the-great-advertising-experiment See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Hi there and welcome to the Stacks Podcast, I’m Zach Valenti. Today, we have a conversation between Jameson Lopp - former Bitcoin engineer, professional cypherpunk, and CTO at the key security company, Casa - and Muneeb Ali, the CEO of Blockstack PBC. Jameson and Muneeb cover a lot of ground here, starting with mining Bitcoin at home, moving on to the importance of personal privacy, delving into the quasi-religious in-fighting in the crypto space, and more. 0:00:41 Welcome. 0:00:57 Muneeb: "I bet you have some Bitcoin miners set up in your home as well." 0:01:03 Jameson: "I only ever mined on testnet." 0:01:15 Muneeb: "Speaking of miners, what do you think of these new consumer mining equipment companies?" 0:01:35 Jameson: "I like the idea at a high level." 0:02:09 Jameson: "Basically using your electricity bill as a way to receive crypto." 0:02:48 Muneeb: "From a purely 'can this be profitable?' perspective, there's no way." 0:03:32 Jameson: "I actually argue we should move to a model where most people are mining unprofitably as the best way to decentralize mining." 0:04:22 Muneeb: "If you look at the first wave of peer-to-peer networks, people would run peers without any incentives." 0:05:55 Jameson: "If we really want people to be running these Internet connected devices that need to have pretty good uptime... we need to figure out how to automate away as much of the boring IT aspects and really make a nice user interface." 0:06:24 Muneeb: "Operating your own node is one of those things that computer geeks would love to do it, but they're relatively only a small subset of the population." 0:06:44 Muneeb: "What's your current working theory on - let's say five to ten years from now - do you believe in a world where everything just converges to Bitcoin? Or do you see a world with more fragmentation?" 0:07:26 Jameson: "That's complicated." 0:08:58 Jameson: "We're going to have thousands of these cockroaches running around and continuing to exist, though they will probably not be as utilized as Bitcoin." 0:09:26 Muneeb: "When does a blockchain die?" 0:09:46 Jameson: "What's more interesting than whether some machines are running the protocol is whether people are using the protocol and maintaining it." 0:10:11 Jameson: "The example I like to use is dogecoin." 0:11:00 Muneeb: "I don't know about hundreds of useful tokens out there, but I can definitely imagine a handful, maybe tens of them." 0:11:37 Muneeb: "How do you see the Internet evolve, let's say five years from now, and how will the typical user interact with it?" 0:11:51 Jameson: "The real trade off between most of this is usability and security." 0:12:55 Jameson: "Perhaps the hardware will just start to be rolled out with your common, every day computing platforms." 0:13:30 Jameson: "The onus for a lot of this stuff to go really mainstream is going to be on the enterprises to basically build in defaults so people don't have to make a lot of choices." 0:14:41 Muneeb: "Let's say people start keeping twenty to thirty percent of their net worth in crypto tokens. That also means they start becoming targets as well." 0:14:58 Muneeb: "I love the article that came out in The New York Times that talked about how to disappear from the face of the earth, featuring you.” https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/12/technology/how-to-disappear-surveillance-state.html 0:15:09 Muneeb: "What do you think about personal privacy?" 0:15:33 Jameson: "There are people who are 'being their own bank' and right now a lot of the criminals are still catching up to that." 0:16:32 Jameson: "What do we need to do? It needs to be like a herd immune defense." 0:17:46 Jameson: "There's probably even more complexities asking people to be their own bank than asking them to be a server administrator." 0:18:21 Muneeb: "Speaking of key management, what's the latest at Casa?" 0:18:35 Jameson: "Over the past few months we've been evolving our product lines. The original being Casa Keymaster." 0:20:48 Muneeb: "We have an early generation Casa node running in one of our conference rooms here." 0:21:32 Muneeb: "What does it look like we're focused on at Blockstack from the outside?" 0:21:48 Jameson: "From my perspective, it is another take on trying to decentralize as much of the Internet stack as possible." 0:22:23 Jameson: "There's a lot of pieces of the infrastructure that are actually a lot more fragile and brittle than we would like." 0:23:04 Jameson: "The idea that we can move back to a more decentralized platform, I think is going to make [the Internet] more robust." 0:23:45 Muneeb: "We will figure out the problems and computer science challenges at the infrastructure layer and then we want to give the right tools to the developers to build on top of that." 0:24:59 Jameson: "I'd actually be very interested to see a really decentralized social media app." 0:25:22 Jameson: "Today, I think we saw block.one announce they were releasing a new EOS social app, but to fix trolling and spam they will require government IDs for every account." https://www.coindesk.com/block-ones-new-social-media-site-will-do-identity-checks-for-every-user 0:25:52 Muneeb: "Are they thinking that all the data would be stored on the EOS blockchain? Last time I checked, their block producers were running out of disk space." 0:26:13 Jameson: "I saw something about $20 million dollars worth of RAM being purchased by some of the block producers." https://thecryptoreport.com/eos-leader-block-one-spends-20-million-on-ram-for-big-announcement-coming-on-june-1/ 0:26:24 Jameson: "It's almost like each one of these networks has their own ideology and personality and is willing to make different trade offs." 0:26:46 Muneeb: "In many ways these networks are valuable because of the community, because of all the believers..." 0:27:23 Muneeb: "... the entire industry is so small that you could argue the blue ocean is outside of our industry right now, and people should be externally focused, expanding the size of the market. Today's bonus content is an interview with the one and only Zach Valenti, star and co-producer of Wolf 359 (among many other things), who took on a cameo role as Merril in our last few episodes. This conversation was originally broadcast in May as part of Zach's ongoing "Self Care Sunday" livestream project. You can watch video of the interview here (Christian starts at right around hour 2), and subscribe to the channel at zach.live. Release of Chapter 3 is delayed slightly, for reasons explained at the head of the episode. We will announce release dates as soon as we can, and we're sorry for the delay! Hit the break for a full transcript of Christian's statement. Statement transcript: Hey everyone, Christian here. Got some more bonus content for you this week, and the reason for that is we're still waiting to see when we can release Chapter 3. You have our apologies for that. I'm sure this has been a really rough week for a lot of us what with the events in Charlottesville. Speaking personally - though I'm definitely angered and saddened and frightened - as a straight white guy living in New York City, these things tend not to hit me as viscerally as they might hit some of you. So I try to use that position of relative safety to hunker down and do what I can to help. That includes but is by no means limited to hopefully getting this show out in time for anyone who counts on it as a little spot of fun in their week. Unfortunately, in addition to everything else, Jess and I had a pet pass away this week, and being perfectly honest I wasn't really able to focus much on work. So in the interest of transparency, that's meant that editing is delayed on Chapter 3 and writing is delayed on Chapter 4. And I want to take just a moment to say for posterity that our rabbit Bebe was a sweet little spot of light and good in a world that too often lately feels dark and shitty. She was loved and will be very dearly missed. I know it’s a small thing in light of what everyone else is certainly feeling this week, dearly beloved though Bebe was. So I'll just add this, because I've been thinking about it a lot: The first words spoken in The Once And Future Nerd are "Imagine, if you can, what life is like for a rabbit." At the risk of saying the subtext out loud, that was us trying to p rime our audience to think about what it would be like to be much more vulnerable than they are. That's always been a core principle of the show. A lot of people are very vulnerable right now. Do what you can for them. Be excellent to each other. I hope that our fandom is a fairly wide tent. I'm glad we have writers who don't always agree with me. I hope we have fans who don't always agree with us. I want our show to affirm but I also want it to teach, and you can’t teach if everyone agrees. And right now with tensions running so high, I think those of us who are relatively safe could do better at having patient, good faith conversations with people whose views frustrate us. Having said that, if your stated belief is that some people are inherently inferior to you at birth, you have thereby forfeited your claim on patience and good faith. The Once And Future Nerd, as a project and an organization, is Black and Brown and Jewish and female and queer and disabled. Nazis and white supremacists and their ilk can fuck off, now and forever. And to be clear, because I don’t want it to seem like I’m just calling anyone I disagree with a Nazi, if you walk around next a Nazi flag saying Nazi shit like we should have a white ethnostate, you’re a fucking Nazi, and you can fuck off. End transcript.

This week on Radio Drama Revival, it’s the comic sci-fi thriller Wolf 359. This genre-bending show, by turns endearing, intense, terrifying, and hilarious, is a delight to listen to - and its stars are a delight to talk to!Wolf 359 is the story of a lonely little space station orbiting a red dwarf star, and the four personalities aboard it: Commander Renée Minkowski, a badass astronaut who has literally memorized the book on deep-space survival; Alexander Hilbert, a scientist who may or may not be utterly nuts; Hera, one of the most sardonic artificial intelligences in audio fiction; and Doug Eiffel, the lazy-but-lovable communications officer (and narrator).Join me as I play Episode 10 of Wolf 359 - “Extreme Danger Bug” - and then sit down with Emma Sherr-Ziarko and Zach Valenti, two of the show’s stars. It’s sure to be a wild ride.
