In this episode of Off the Deep End, we decide to rank multiple video games that the main Deep Listens podcast played, partially out of spite and partially because we needed a podcast for this week. Join Braden "ArbitraryWater" REDACTED, Chris "ZombiePie" REDACTED and Gino Grieco on a fun retrospective journey through almost a decade's worth of podcasts and more than a decade's worth of video games we vaguely remember. Patreon.com/RememberTheGame And you can check out Captain N's Retrotopia Podcast here: https://retrotopiapodcast.podbean.com/ The most fiercely contested Patreon Poll of the year is always our December RPG poll, and Wild Arms conquered it a couple months ago. I sunk about 30 hours into this one to get ready for this episode, and it was time well spent. This is the best RPG I've played in ages. It has an interesting enough story, a small party size (which I love), a banging soundtrack, and when you're not in combat, you can taste a little Link to the Past in the overworked while you use bombs, dashing, and hockshops to solve some pretty deep puzzles. I think Wild Arms gets a little overlooked because it's on the console Final Fantasy VII built, and it really deserves to have more respect put on it. This is a great game. I crossed the retro podcast streams again this week and asked Captain N of the Retrotopia podcast to join me, and we both agreed that aside from a couple minor issues, this is one of the best RPGs in the PlayStation library. And that says something because that was the Attitude Era of role-playing games. We're gonna spoil some plot points and puzzle solutions, but it'll be worth it. And before we break out our teardrops, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what would have happened if Nintendo hadn't launched the NES back in the 80's? What podcasts do I listen to while gaming? And are Shay and I gonna play Split Fiction?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 more 'under the radar' PSOne RPGs: Legend of Legaia, Chrono Cross, and Brave Fencer Musashi. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A new turn around the sun and a new episode, this month's guest being Chris Treviño, a field recordist and sound designer from Michigan with a background in anthropology and currently pursuing a Masters in Industrial Heritage and Archaeology, focusing on ways of knowing his own town through its sound across its history. We're talking about some aspects of sound as heritage and memory as well as its cultural value in which Chris conceptualizes the notion of sonic time capsule, how we humans relate to sound in different contexts and throughout time, and we also talk about his more recent project in the Isle Royale National Park in Michigan, where Chris spent almost two weeks recording while traversing the island by foot. This podcast episode ventures beyond just listing JRPGs, but also exploring how these game systems contributed uniquely to the evolution of the genre. From the pixel art of Square Enix classics to the groundbreaking narratives in games like Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Cross, we'll dissect what made each platform stand out.
Previously on Rhythm Encounter, we have talked about some important first impressions, namely some of our favorite intro themes, and even title screen music. But what happens next is just as important: the opening hours of an RPG can really set the stage for what's to come. When thinking about our favorite games, it's fun to think back to how they began, and how well the mood and world is established through the narrative, characters, and of course, the music. Today we're sharing some of our favorite early game tunes that were instrumental (sorry not sorry) in getting us into some great games.Featuring: Mike Salbato, Michael Sollosi, Patrick Gann, Wes Iliff; Edited by Paul DennisTracklist0:06:23 - Reminiscence (Miki Higashino) - Suikoden II0:08:11 - Dream of the Shore Bordering Another World (Yasunori Mitsuda) - Chrono Cross0:31:30 - City of Bells (Ken Nakagawa) - Atelier Iris ~Eternal Mana~0:33:32 - Caravan Crossroad (Kumi Tanioka) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles0:57:24 - Autumn's Rise (Deniz Akbulut) - CrossCode1:00:14 - Garland Office (Yoshitaka Hirota) - Shadow Hearts: From the New World1:16:50 - Unary Game (Shinji Hosoe) - 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors1:19:04 - Pledge of Demon (Hidenori Shoji) - Yakuza 01:51:57 - Sollosi's Bonus Track!Album links for places to buy, stream, and more are available in our post on RPGFan.Get in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: music@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomInstagram: @rpgfancomThreads: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancom

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we start a new series on 1999's Homeworld, from Relic Entertainment. We set the game in its time and then turn a little bit to the opening moments and the tutorial. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: First couple of levels + tutorial Issues covered: a layered intro, our history with RTSes, the music hitting, transitioning to a console player, console RTSes, a new timeline, setting the game in its time, going against the norm, Relic and its RTS series, the big genre of the time but one that never grew, grognard capture, the appeal of online games, early e-sports, popularity in Korea, the feel of a space sim, checking all the boxes, how 3D it really is, switching views to elevate a target point, mouse and keyboard, doing their own thing with hotkeys, evolution working on games, presentational advantages, a graphics benchmark game, economical game development, elegant ship design, great silhouettes, maybe tessellating, editors that look like RTSes, spending budget on contrails, using specific things on PCs vs the graphics cards, camera and control, mining everything you can and building as you go, replacing inferior ships with new ones, finite people and resources reflecting themes, elegance in design, framing the camera well, the great use of the fleet commander and the magic of moving the camera, WWII space physics vs more accurate space physics, interestingly bad video games, finding those bad games, moon shots, imagining a deeper ecology, speedrunning Trespasser, a diversion into speedrunning. We definitely couldn't beat this game without a walkthrough.
We still don't entirely know how the inventory works.
Chrono Cross, much like Majora's Mask, is less linear than Final Fantasy 7.
Ryan, close some of those browser tabs already!
So, you're General Viper?
That's an actual input that we have to put into the game.
Perhaps we aren't being fair to this game?
Solt and Peppor are all timers.

It's summertime, playing Zelda in your car, heading to a LAN party, and the night air is filled with wildfire smoke. Hey what if we just took a little time to talk about a video game? Chrono Cross is the sequel to the world-renowned, critically-acclaimed single-player RPG Chrono Trigger. The original PlayStation is likely the most loaded system in terms of RPGs. From titles like Legends of Dragoon, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 7, and so many more, this system was known for housing banger after banger. I'm honestly surprised it took us this long to talk about how the PS1 era was one of the most influential eras in all of gaming. But here we are, gushing about our childhood, our faves, and the endless hours of random encounters. And what better way to pay homage to these classics than by teaming up with special guests, Gaming Broductions! There is nothing quite as exciting as having a composer as a guest on Rhythm Encounter.
