It seems that with every new Japanese game released here in the States, there's another controversy about the translation. Most recently, we saw this with Metaphor: Refantasio, but the same thing happened with Unicorn Overlord and many others. This is true not only for games but also for anime and Manga. So today, we brought in Alexander O. Smith, a professional Japanese-to-English translator and game writer who worked on games like Vagrant Story, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy XII, to set the record straight about the process of game translation and localization. Is the game industry plagued with "rogue translators" who are pushing their own agenda? Is censorship the issue? In this episode, you'll learn how and why these decisions are made and learn some REALLY cool behind-the-scenes info on how Final Fantasy X was translated! Timecodes: 1. Intro (0:00) 2. Finalist #5 in the Book Review Contest [This is one of the finalists in the 2023 book review contest, written by an ACX reader who will remain anonymous until after voting is done. I'll be posting about one of these a week for several months. When you've read them all, I'll ask you to vote for a favorite, so remember which ones you liked] I. I found Njal's Saga hard to follow. Halfway through, a friend reassured me it wasn't my fault. The medieval Icelanders had erred in releasing it as a book. It should have been the world's wackiest Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney spinoff. Remember, medieval Iceland was an early attempt at anarcho-capitalist utopia. When Harald Fairhair declared himself King of Norway, the Norwegians who refused to bend the knee fled west to build a makeshift seastead on a frozen volcanic island. No lords, no kings, no masters. Only lawsuits. So, so many lawsuits. Once a year, the Icelanders would meet at the Althing, a free-for-all open-air law court. There they would engage in that most Viking of pastimes - suing each other, ad nauseam, for every minor slight of the past six months. Offended parties would sell their rights to prosecute a case to the highest bidder, who would go around seeking fair arbitrators (or, in larger cases, defer to a panel chosen by chieftain-nobles called godi. Courts would propose a penalty for the losing side - usually money. There were no police, but if the losers refused to pay, the courts could declare them “outlaws” - in which case it was legal to kill them. If you wanted to be a Viking in medieval Iceland, you needed a good lawyer. And Njal was the greatest lawyer of all. https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/your-book-review-njals-saga

We're gathered here today to mourn & celebrate the life of a video game console, Nintendo's last handheld-only device, the small but mighty Nintendo 3DS.As of March 27th, 2023, the Nintendo eShop for the 3DS and Wii U will be officially shut down, meaning 866 Wii U games and 1547 3DS games will no longer be available to purchase. We've already dedicated an episode in the past to the Nintendo Wii U, so today we're taking a look back at our memories of the 3DS: our favorite games to grace the device, StreetPass & other quirky apps, its hit-&-miss use of its signature stereoscopic 3D gimmick, and some last-minute purchases we've recently downloaded & played in the eShop's twilight hours. Plus we wax poetic a bit about the death of digital media, the importance of video game preservation, and the ethics of p*racy & emulation (not that we know what tf we're talking about! we're just two gaymers with a podcast and opinions!) If you're listening to this before 3/27/23, we hope this episode provides a couple of last-minute game recommendations to download! Otherwise... we don't know what to tell ya, but thanks for listening anyways! Good luck finding a physical copy of some of these games on eBay I guess? RIP to the 3DS. You had a good at it, thanks for your input

Originally released in 2001 on the GBA, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney surprised the world when it was brought to the DS a few years later, meeting unprecedented success for an unconventional type of video game at that time. But how much fun are this "lawyer simulator" visual novel adventure game and its successors, really? Get our verdict on the latest Collateral Media collaboration special, and stay tuned for Part 2, where we'll be discussing the remaining 2 titles of the trilogy: Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations! Ben is joined by Norah this week, and cooperatively they investigate this week's word. Things out a little slow conversationally, but then their on-brand rampant digression kicks in with topics such as television procedurals, the “cozy” genre of mysteries, the movie adaptation of Japanese author Kōtarō Isaka's black humour thriller novel “Maria Beetle,” Ben's favorite Chris Columbus movie script, and Scandinavian Noir. To close out the show, Norah listens intently while Ben talks about some of his favorite mystery themed point and click adventure games and Nintendo DS games from Capcom's Shu Takumi. In the final words, Norah includes a book series recommendation (Jutta Profijt's “Morgue Drawer”), and Ben casually endorses the television series “iZombie.” 00:00:21 - Surf's up in Chicago, 8AM installations, and what Norah is watching 00:04:27 - State of mind, predictability, life things, mysteries of the sexes, and pod people 00:07:21 - From digressions to definitions, the death of Raquel Welch, and Ox N. Ford 00:11:00 - Origins of mystery, mysticism, Ben's personal definition, and the denouement 00:13:40 - Guitars, books, television, movies, and the genre of the Cozy Mystery 00:18:18 - Egg preparations, the golden age of detective fiction, and “Abracadaver!” 00:21:35 - Movie mystery preferences, cycling streaming services, and greed 00:23:57 - Ben talks “Bullet Train” directed by a Brad Pitt / Jean-Claude Van Damme facsimile 00:29:00 - Storytelling preferences for mystery movies, and Norah's cozy mystery trajectory 00:31:41 - The procedural mystery, character development in television, and realism 00:34:44 - Scandinavian Nior, IKEA, Encyclopedia Brown, Nancy Drew, and the Hardy Boys 00:38:35 - Enola Holmes, messing with Sherlock Holmes cannon, and Chris Columbus movies 00:42:22 - Norah adds one more before moving on to mystery games… questionable meat! 00:43:39 - Correction: “Grim Fandango” was Tim Schaffer's second game as a project leader 00:46:45 - “Sam & Max Hit the Road,” the largest ball of twine, and other roadside attractions 00:49:19 - “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney,” “The Thing” in Arizona, and to-do lists 00:52:10 - Ben explains Shu Takumi's “Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective” to Norah 00:55:13 - An interesting Nintendo direct remaster announcement, more trivia, and a step 00:57:57 - Starting the wrap-up, a couple of recommendations, and ending mystery

Hello! Tonight, I played some of the second case in Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations! Enjoy luvs!
The Movie Bar, Episode 7: ...Ace Attorney Walks Into the Bar! *Note - if your download of this episode is messed up (sound effects in the wrong place, half an hour of dialogue mis-aligned around the 85 minute mark), please delete and re-download the episode to fix the issue! **Content warning - this episode contains mild swearing and references to violence, including non-graphic mentions of murder. The Diad and Bedroth cross the ocean to the Land of the Rising Sun with their first international film, and they're not alone! Jason Arriola of Games and Junk joins the guys to analyze Ace Attorney, a Japanese film adaptation of Gyakuten Saiban Yomigaeru Gyakuten, known in the United States as Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney . Directed by Takashi Miike from a screenplay by Takeharu Sakurai and Sachiko Oguchi, Ace Attorney (Gyakuten Saiban in Japan) stars Hiroki Narimaya as Phoneix Wright, Mirei Kiratani as Maya Fey, and Takumi Saitoh as Miles Edgeworth, as Phoenix, an up-and-coming defense attorney, faces a series of opponents (including Edgeworth himself) while also dealing with the death of his friend and colleague, Mia Fey (played by Rei Dan). Mia's sister, Maya, who is initially charged with the Mia's murder before being acquitted thanks to Phoenix's defense, begins assisting Phoenix when he takes his next case. In a turn(about) of events, Phoenix's opponent in Maya's murder trial, the famed (and feared) prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, is also charged with murder! And this case has ramifications that go all the way back to the mysterious death of Miles's father, Gregory (Takehiro Hira) and the downfall of Maya's family name after her mother, the medium Misty Fey (Kimiko Yo) provides mystical (and mistaken) evidence for the mysterious DL-6 case. What's more, to prove Miles innocent, Phoenix must win a case against Miles's one-time mentor, Manfred von Karma (Ryo Ishibashi), who hasn't lost a single case in his 40-year career! Confused? Intrigued? So are we! Will Phoenix emerge victorious and prove that Miles is innocent? Is Miles innocent to begin with? Or will The Judge (Akira Emoto) find the young Edgeworth guilty in spite of Phoenix Wright's OBJECTIONS? Join us (and Jason!) at the bar and find out!
