(Folge #88) Sendungshinweis: FM4 Game Podcast, 5. Oktober 2023, 0-1 Uhr.

This week I'm joined by Nick, known in the game dev community as Vimlark. Vimlark is a game jam veteran who participates in sever game jams every year. In 2020, Vim managed to place in the top 20 submissions during the Game Makers Toolkit Jam with his game, Make the Way . In this episode, we discuss the importance of creating a good user experience in games. We chat about one really appreciated UX element, and one that is often left out but highly sought after. Following our discussion we design a game around the theme, "What's Old is New". Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're a little less jam-packed in regards to quantity this week, but we are MORE than making up for it in the quality department, with some seriously top-notch games on the docket this week...so, let's go! First things first, we've all got BOBA fever! This awesome little precision platformer from indie dev trio, Casey MacNiel, Dalton Leavy, & Connor Grail is an absolutely fantastic experience from top to bottom...and on top of all that, there is a full blown level editor that is super simple to use and already has loads of great player-made levels! Kevin also just can't leave Ludum Dare 48 alone and has one more amazingly polished precision puzzle platformer, Tailspin!, from Team Bugulon. Randall has been playing a bunch of PHOGS! with his wife Tina, and they've been having a blast with this wacky co-op puzzle adventure! Kevin has a couple more indies to spotlight (per usual), after sinking a ton of time into both Die in the Dungeon, a roguelite deckbuilding dice game, and Townseek, a super chill trading exploration game. Finally, John wraps things up with Touhou: Luna Nights, which he is thaaaat close to 100%-ing! This action-packed & puzzle-filled metroidvania is shaping up to be amongst his favorites, in one of his favorite genres—shockingly, John & Kevin agree on a metroidvania! :) Timestamps: BOBA - 00:02:12 Tailspin! - 00:12:15 PHOGS! - 00:14:35 Die in the Dungeon - 00:22:04 Townseek - 00:27:27 Touhou: Luna Nights - 00:29:22 Thanks so much for taking the time to listen! Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got a whole bunch of games to get to this week—including a few more spotlights from the recent Ludum Dare 48 game jam—so let's things get started! After we chat about LD48, Kevin & John also took a look at the latest game from indie dev, Blabberf, Oracle Chain, from the ongoing #ChainLetter Jam, which is exactly what it sounds like! After that, Randall shares his thoughts on Toree 3D, the fantastic little fast-paced 3D platformer we discussed a few weeks back...and it's only a buck!?! John decides to take a look at Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest after all of the retro gaming we've been doing lately, and shares some thoughts on this JRPG designed to target the Western audience. From there, Kevin does his usual thing and rattles off a few more indie games—this week discussing a few really fantastic upcoming platformers! Finally, we wrap things up with a little video game pinball action, as we plow through a ton of our retro favorites & new discoveries—along with some other games outside of the ‘genre' that utilize pinball mechanics. Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got a whole bunch of games to talk about this week of all shapes & sizes, so let's get right down to business! John kicks things off with an update on his ongoing adventures in Monster Hunter: Rise—he's seen the credits roll at this point, but that doesn't mean he's anywhere near being done with this game! Sounds like there is ALL sorts of post-game goodness to dig into, so there's a good chance it'll come up again in the future! From there, we dive right into a discussion of the recent Ludum Dare 48 game jam, taking some time to highlight some of our favorite entries & discoveries so far, including a few from some of our favorite indie developers! There's also a really good chance we're gonna talk a little more Ludum Dare action next week—there are just TOO many incredible games! While we're on the subject of game jams, Randall & Kevin dig into Space Gulls, the latest new NES game from Morphcat Games, made for the NESdev competition. Morphcat is definitely a developer to keep an eye on, for retro & indie fans alike. If you've listened to the podcast before, you already know how much John loves a good metroidvania, and he's been playing through his favorite entry in the Castlevania franchise, Circle of the Moon. And while we're on the topic of the Game Boy Advance, Kevin mentions a couple of import titles that never made their way over to North America—alongside Ufouria: The Saga, a quirky metroidvania on the NES that also never made its way overseas. Sound the alarm, it's the second half of Evil Games Club's latest nefarious reign over the clubhouse! This time, Adia, Dylan and Dale take their misdeeds to new heights with an "Evil Games Jam." Can they invent a playable game and test it in a single episode? What maddening mechanics will be unleashed from these malevolent minds? Take shelter under your headphones and listen if you dare! The Interactive Fiction CompetitionSpring Thing Festival of Interactive FictionLudum Dare 48NaNoReNO JamOST Jam Prompt Create a game you might find in a casino, where the house always wins. Game type Card game Player count 3 Materials Standard deck of 52 playing cards Setup In this game, the Patrons and the Dealer oppose each other. In the spirit of the prompt, the idea is that the Dealer needs to win against the Patrons, but keep them interested enough to keep playing. The Dealer wants to win against the Patrons. The Patrons will work with each other to make more matches than the Dealer—while having fun!Setting up the game:Decide who will be The Dealer. The Dealer shuffles the deck and deals each player 5 cards, face down. The Dealer deals themselves 5 cards, face down.Play starts with the person to the Dealer's left and proceeds clockwise. Rules GOALPatrons want to create more sets of matching 4 cards than the Dealer before the deck runs out. A set = 4 cards of the same number.Heads up! Here are some important notes:The Dealer's rules are slightly different than the Players' rules. The differences are noted below in line with the regular rules. The discard pool is not the same thing as the discard pile. A discard pool is created during each round and then merged into the discard pile at the start of the Dealer's turn each round.PLAYER TURNSOn each player's turn, they will take the following steps in order:Draw cardsSwitch cardsDiscard(Dealer only) Before you draw cards, move the cards in the discard pool from that round into the discard pile.1: DRAW CARDSOn their turn, each player takes one of the following actions:Draw up to 2 cards from the deck and place it face up in front of them Draw up to 2 cards from the discard pool and place it face up in front of them (Dealer only) If the player is the Dealer, they can pick up to 2 cards from any of the Patrons' hands and put them face up on the table OR put them directly into their hand2: SWITCH CARDS The player may then swap cards from their hand for cards they just drew, maintaining a hand of 5 cards. Patrons can only switch "like for like"—cards of the same color or number. Examples:Swap the Queen of Spades for the Five of ClubsSwap the Four of Diamonds for the Four of SpadesThe Dealer doesn't have to follow the "like for like" rule. They can switch whatever cards they want. Unfair? Yep! That's the point.3: DISCARDThe player should now have 5 cards in their hand and 2 cards leftover—either ones that were switched out, or ones that were drawn and not switched. The player must do one of the following before the end of their turn:Discard the leftover 2 cards into the discard pool.(Dealer only) Hand the leftover 2 cards to the Patron from which you drew your cards in step 1 of this turn.MAKING A SETA set is created when a single player holds 4 cards of the same number in their hand. When a player creates a set, they place all four cards on the table, then draws back up to a 5 card hand. PLAYING TO WINPlayers take turns, clockwise, until the deck is expended. If the Dealer has made the most 4-card sets by the end of the game, the Dealer wins. If the Patrons have more 4-card sets than the Dealer, the Patrons win!SHARING INFORMATIONPatrons can share information about their hands with each other by placing their hands face-up on the table. If you do this, know that the Dealer will get to see what's in your hand, too! That's all the rules that we're allowed to talk about. If you try out the game, let us know what you think!
Sound the alarm! It's the second part of Evil Games Club's nefarious reign over the clubhouse. This time, Adia, Dylan and Dale take their misdeeds to new heights with an "Evil Games Jam." Can they invent a playable game and test it in a single episode? What maddening mechanics will be unleashed from these malevolent minds? Take shelter under your headphones and listen if you dare! The Interactive Fiction Competition Spring Thing Festival of Interactive Fiction Ludum Dare 48 NaNoReNO Jam OST Jam Prompt Create a game you might find in a casino, where the house always wins. The Patrons will work with each other to make more matches than the Dealer—while having fun! Setting up the game: Decide who will be The Dealer. The Dealer shuffles the deck and deals each player 5 cards, face down. The Dealer deals themselves 5 cards, face down. Play starts with the person to the Dealer's left and proceeds clockwise. Rules GOAL Patrons want to create more sets of matching 4 cards than the Dealer before the deck runs out. A set = 4 cards of the same number. Heads up! Here are some important notes: The Dealer's rules are slightly different than the Players' rules. The differences are noted below in line with the regular rules. The discard pool is not the same thing as the discard pile. A discard pool is created during each round and then merged into the discard pile at the start of the Dealer's turn each round. PLAYER TURNS On each player's turn, they will take the following steps in order: Draw cards Switch cards Discard (Dealer only) Before you draw cards, move the cards in the discard pool from that round into the discard pile. 1: DRAW CARDS On their turn, each player takes one of the following actions: Draw up to 2 cards from the deck and place it face up in front of them Draw up to 2 cards from the discard pool and place it face up in front of them (Dealer only) If the player is the Dealer, they can pick up to 2 cards from any of the Patrons' hands and put them face up on the table OR put them directly into their hand 2: SWITCH CARDS The player may then swap cards from their hand for cards they just drew, maintaining a hand of 5 cards. Patrons can only switch "like for like"—cards of the same color or number. Examples: Swap the Queen of Spades for the Five of Clubs Swap the Four of Diamonds for the Four of Spades The Dealer doesn't have to follow the "like for like" rule. They can switch whatever cards they want. Unfair? Yep! That's the point. 3: DISCARD The player should now have 5 cards in their hand and 2 cards leftover—either ones that were switched out, or ones that were drawn and not switched. The player must do one of the following before the end of their turn: Discard the leftover 2 cards into the discard pool. (Dealer only) Hand the leftover 2 cards to the Patron from which you drew your cards in step 1 of this turn. MAKING A SET A set is created when a single player holds 4 cards of the same number in their hand. When a player creates a set, they place all four cards on the table, then draws back up to a 5 card hand. PLAYING TO WIN Players take turns, clockwise, until the deck is expended. If the Dealer has made the most 4-card sets by the end of the game, the Dealer wins. If the Patrons have more 4-card sets than the Dealer, the Patrons win! SHARING INFORMATION Patrons can share information about their hands with each other by placing their hands face-up on the table. If you do this, know that the Dealer will get to see what's in your hand, too! That's all the rules that we're allowed to talk about. If you try out the game, let us know what you think!

This week I'm joined by Dan... better knows as Honest Dan of Honest Dan Games. Dan is a UK based game developer who is often found streaming his game dev process as he explores Unreal Engine. This episode we compare and contrast our experiences with Ludum Dare and Global Game Jam. We look at different approaches to game design specifically for game jams and what makes for a good game jam theme. Hello, Shenanites! This week, we talk about less random randomness, floors and ceilings, and proper beverage production. Plans aren’t plans so much as they’re educated guesses. Adherence runs counter to adaptation, and it’s important to know when and where to switch modes. What we’re saying is, get those pillars! Questions answered (abbreviated): - Flyhoppie Axerompa: Seth, could you please stream while you make a game for Ludum Dare? - Beekie Boppaboop: Is there a chance we could get some new segments on the show? From Retro to Neo ist unser kompaktestes Bonusformat für unsere Patreon/Steady-Unterstützer.

Following a few discussions on social media in the wake of Ludum Dare 43 (enjoy my photo from LD19), I took an opportunity to gather my thoughts on this revered tradition of ours and ask a few important questions: Why do we do this? Why do we do it like this? Should we still be doing this? Believe me, I'm far from anti-jam. I've probably participated in a dozen over the last decade, but I do have some thoughts on how we can put them to better use. I don't think we should respect any practice too much to question it, so let's get the ball rolling. Though I've been thinking on this topic a long time, tweeting with some folks including your friend and mine, Christer Kaitila helped me finally decide to organize what was in my head. If you jam, you should check out his book, The Game Jam Survival Guide. We'll have to pester him to make an appearance here soon. It was a great week of feedback around social media after a show we were actually worried about for a few reasons so thank you one and all. As always, your ratings and reviews keep our community growing, and your kind words keep us working on it.
