Click Therapy for Dogs (and the people who love them)

In this episode I cover the concept of Umwelt the notion that we perceive the world through our own limited senses. The term was first coined by German Ethnologist Jakob von Uexkull in his book published in 1934 entitled Foray Into Other Worlds of Animals and Humans.  I also cover Ed Young's book An immense World, how animal senses reveal the hidden realms around us.  Through an descriptive exercise we explore and imagine what it must like to be another animal and quickly recognize our built in limitations. These limitations if gone unchecked do cause confusion and often misunderstandings with our furry friends. We can never know what its like to be a dog, a cat, a fish, horse, snake or elephant because we are human and perceiving the world through our own limited and different sensory perceptions. Recognition of our differences provides us with an awakening and remind us to pause and reflect. I hope you enjoy this episode. Acoustic morning leaves TunePocket This podcast is suitable for people living with dogs, not living with dogs or planning to soon. The power of the people is real, and it starts with each of us. Today we're joined by Ole von Uexkull of the Right Livelihood Foundation. Known worldwide as the "alternative Nobel Prize", the Right Livelihood Award celebrates and amplifies the work of people who are building change from the ground up within their local communities. Changemakers like Greta Thunberg, Edward Snowden, Daniel Ellsberg, Vandana Shiva, Mordechai Vanunu, and many more have been honored with the Right Livelihood Award for fighting for global human and environmental rights and for advocating for greater transparency from systems of power. Right Livelihood laureates are reimagining our world and building solutions to global problems right now. By following their example and engaging with our local communities we can build movements to reshape every aspect of society. True change has always grown out of action taken by citizens coming together to speak with one voice. Join us, learn more, get inspired, and take action today.SUPPORT Right Livelihood: Learn more about RL laureates, support their work, donate, and get involved at rightlivelihood.org/. Follow their work on Instagram and Twitter, and visit their college program at https://rightlivelihood.ucsc.edu/.CHALLENGE: Become an activist for a cause you believe in. Take action by joining local groups which are advocating for your chosen cause or add your voice to online activism efforts. Experience the feeling of getting directly involved with something you care about and amplify that message within your community.TAKEAWAYS: 1: It's time to exercise our voices now. As individuals, within communities, and collectively. 2: We should never take our right to gather, organize, speak out, or protest for granted. 3: Our true arena for change is on the ground through grassroots movements based on community values. No true change has ever been legislated - change comes from citizens, laws come later.Visit www.wecanremaketheworld.com for more info and resources.

Security and climate change: Fixing the missing links?

Climate change is increasingly considered a security threat with potentially far-reaching implications for the geostrategic environment. Through large-scale migration, increased border tensions, and greater demands for rescue and evacuation efforts, climate change potentially impacts the individual security of people and the viability of vulnerable states to an extent that exceeds existing disaster-response capabilities. As a result, Germany has announced that one focus of its membership in the United Nations Security Council will be on climate related security risks. Links to climate change have slowly started to enter UN resolutions in recent years, but there is still controversy about the extent to which climate related security risks can and should be addressed by the UN Security Council. How can the international community best address resource conflicts driven by climate change? What consideration needs to be given to climate change in conflict prevention? And what are the long-term consequences of including climate change in the agenda of the UN Security Council with regards to sanctions and peacekeeping? A discussion on the security implications of climate change and the role of the UN Security Council in this context, with speakers Ottmar Georg Edenhofer, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Professor for the Economics of Climate Change at the Technical University Berlin and founding director of the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC), Nina von Uexkull, Assistant Professor at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University and Associate Senior Researcher at the Peace Research Institute Oslo, and Karl-Heinz Kamp, Special Envoy of the Political Director in the German Ministry of Defence. Welcome and introduction by Detlef Dzembritzki, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the United Nations Association of Germany, event chaired by Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, Senior Professor for Security Policy and Diplomatic Practice at the Hertie School, Director of the school’s Centre for International Security and Chairman of the Munich Security Conference.

This week’s News segment begins with hedge fund billionaire Lee Cooperman crying on TV and (what else?) Michael Bloomberg announcing he’ll run for president. Jerry Moyes: 7/10 on the David Koch Asset Liquidation Index Chad introduces us to Jerry Moyes, the retired founder of Swift Transportation. Moyes owned the possibly-fictional NHL hockey team the Arizona Coyotes before he ran it into bankruptcy. He owns the biggest boat on Lake Powell, which he named The Big Dog. He gives tons of money to Trump. He’s been involved in a number of shady financial dealings to serve his own greed. All basic billionaire shit. The main part of the Moyes segment involves the labor history of the trucking industry in the US. It’s a sad story, and you can probably guess how it goes. Gary Rollins: 7/10 Joe talks about Gary Rollins, CEO of Rollins, Inc., which owns Orkin Pest Control. The Rollins family has some drama. The kind of drama where you hire private investigators to steal your grandchildren’s medical records. Kids suing parents. Parents suing grandparents. Ratmen suing Ratbabies. This story is nuts. Orkin also regularly cheats people, poisons people, and sometimes cheats the people it poisons. Joe offers us some thoughts on insects (and our relations to them. Innenwelt and Umwelt.
