Episode #84 John Pabon Great and inspiring conversation with John. We talked about saving the Earth! OK, let's face it, it's not the earth that really needs saving, it's all the things that live on Earth. Anyway, he has a much more positive view on the subject than I do, and it was a very refreshing conversation. There was also a bit of controversy, Ooooooh, everyone loves controversy! In his own words: I've spent two decades in the business of saving our Earth. After leaving my role at the United Nations, I traveled the world studying the impacts of sustainability first-hand in factories, on fields, and at Fortune 500s. That's given me a very unique perspective on what it takes to make a positive impact. I'm a globally recognized expert in sustainability with a mission to move from theory to practical strategies that help people and businesses confidentially make real impact. To get there, I share my message through books, consulting to businesses, and keynote speaking to audiences around the world. My global career has taken me from Los Angeles to New York, Shanghai to Seoul to Melbourne. I've had the privilege of working with the United Nations, McKinsey, A.C. Nielsen, and as a consultant with BSR, the world's largest sustainability-focused business network. A decade of experience living and working in Asia inspired me to found strategic communications firm Fulcrum Strategic Advisors with a mission to help companies, governments, and individuals capitalize on the benefits sustainability offers. I'm also a regular contributor to major publications such as CNN, EuroNews, and the ABC. I speak to an array of global audiences on issues of sustainability, geopolitics, communications, and societal change. I am the Program Director for The Conference Board's Asia Sustainability Leaders Council, a member of the United Nations Association of Australia, and serve on the board of advisors to the U.S. Green Chamber of Commerce. I am the author of “Sustainability for the Rest of Us: Your No-Bullshit, Five-Point Plan for Saving the Planet.” The book has been described as “…a foundational read for practical sustainability in the 21st century” and “…one of the best sustainability resources available to date.” I'm also excited to be helping consumers make smarter decisions through my second book, “The Great Greenwashing: How Brands, Governments, and Influencers are Lying to You,” out now. https://www.tiktok.com/@johnapabon https://www.johnpabon.com/ https://www.fulcrum22.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnpabon/ https://www.instagram.com/johnapabon/ https://www.instagram.com/@johnapabon Music for all episodes by Jon Griffin. Sometimes, a melody can lead to a movement; this was the case with John Pabon's transformation from a music student to a beacon of sustainability. Our conversation with John casts a light on his pivot from the arts to political science, his work with the United Nations, and his ultimate venture into the consultancy world with Fulcrum Advisors. With John, we crack open the tough shell of greenwashing and peer into its core – where intention doesn't always align with action, and eco-friendly facades sometimes hide a less verdant truth. The discussion is an eye-opener on the sophisticated tactics companies employ to appeal to our greener senses, and it's a call to arms for transparency and accountability. We don't shy away from the hard questions, like the impact of influencers and the importance of adaptability in career paths that aim for a future where sustainability isn't a role but a foundation. The episode culminates with a message of hope and a reminder of the power of focused, individual actions. We share insights on balancing the scales of passion and skills against the weight of global challenges, and on the emotional journey of lifestyle changes. Wrapping up, we touch upon the importance of self-care and gratitude amidst the struggle for a better environment, encouraging listeners to embrace their contributions to the collective journey towards sustainability. Carly loves John's approach to hard topics and knows you will too. Guest Bio: John Pabon has spent two decades in the business of saving our Earth. Srujana Kaddevarmuth began her career near Bangalore, India after completing her master's degree in engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University. She has had a successful career in the tech industry and currently holds the position of senior director at Walmart's Data and Machine Learning Center of Excellence. In her role as senior director at Walmart, Srujana leads the AI portfolio for various aspects of the company's retail business, including omni retail, new and emerging businesses in the consumer and tech space, data monetization, and membership. Her primary responsibility is to drive innovation and promote the democratization of data and AI, aiming to create value for consumers, associates, and the business as a whole.Despite coming from an academic family, Srujana chose to pursue a career in the corporate sector rather than academia. After obtaining her bachelor's degree in engineering, she gained real-world exposure to data science and AI while working at the Energy and Resources Institute. This experience fascinated her, leading her to pursue a master's degree in engineering with an emphasis on operational research and data science. She then started her career as a data scientist at Hewlett-Packard, where she worked on market mix models in the consumer and marketing domain. Later, she led the big data analytics center of excellence at Hewlett-Packard and went on to work at Accenture, where she led a partnership with Google, developing various models for consumer hardware products before joining Walmart.Entering the corporate world after graduation, Srujana was surprised by the importance of collaboration in data science. She realized that building excellent algorithms alone is not enough; teamwork and collaboration are essential, particularly in applied data science. As a leader, Srujana prioritizes assigning projects to data scientists and AI experts based on their individual interests to keep them intellectually stimulated. She also empowers her team to make informed decisions based on available data. Her team is trained to use AI responsibly, with a focus on explainability, transparency, fairness, and bias elimination. With the increasing delegation of decision-making to algorithms, from trivial choices to significant ones in immigration systems, legal sentencing, and healthcare, it becomes crucial to protect consumer privacy and eliminate unintended consequences. Srujana explains that responsible generation and consumption of algorithms and data are paramount. One of Srujana's major challenges lies in creating proofs-of-concept that effectively translate into tech products and developing unbiased algorithms. “When we deploy these machine learning algorithms, many people fail to understand that these algorithms are the statistical representation of the world that we live in, and they may not necessarily be perfect and interpretable at times, as we have seen certain racist comments unleash on social media sites.” Addressing these issues, according to Srujana, requires eliminating signals of bias through careful data curation and training algorithms to avoid institutionalizing bias associated with certain data sets.Srujana is excited about the diverse advancements in data science, particularly in space exploration, healthcare, and agriculture. In addition to her work with Walmart, Srujana serves on the board of the United Nations Association, San Francisco chapter, where she utilizes data science to drive meaningful decision-making for the protection of our ecosystem. When asked what advice she would give her 18-year-old self, she responds that she would encourage herself to be open to the emerging field of data science and embrace its opportunities. Her advice for other data science enthusiasts is similar: “We have just started to open some new realms in the domain of data science and AI with generative algorithms as well as quantum computing, so I would just urge data science enthusiasts to be open to where this domain takes them.” RELATED LINKSConnect with Srujana Kaddevarmuth on LinkedInFind out more aboutWalmartLearn more about the United Nations Association San Francisco ChapterConnect with Margot Gerritsen on Twitter (@margootjeg) and LinkedInFollow WiDS on Twitter (@WiDS_Worldwide), Facebook (WiDSWorldwide), and Instagram (wids_worldwide)Listen and Subscribe to the WiDS Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher

Guest Host Dr. Monica Hinton Guest Dr. Janina Scarlet Nearly 40% of trauma survivors drop out of therapy because they find it “too distressing.” Many also might struggle with being able to trust their therapist or find a way to express what they are going through. When trauma survivors turn to loved ones for support, many are invalidated or shamed about their reactions to their traumatic experiences. As a result, many trauma survivors experience pervasive feelings of loneliness. Some scientists call loneliness the new epidemic, while others dub loneliness “The New Smoking.” Worldwide loneliness rates have skyrocketed prior to the COVID pandemic and continue to do so. In addition to the global spikes in suicide rates, loneliness has been found to negatively impact the human immune and cardiovascular system in a similar way as smoking a pack of cigarettes per day or daily alcohol abuse. Hence, many trauma survivors turn to TV shows, books, movies, or video games for comfort as a way of managing loneliness and finding a sense of connection and belonging, especially when lacking these kinds of meaningful connections in real life. The connections that many trauma survivors forge with fictional TV shows, books, and video game characters can serve as meaningful social support systems. Many therapists and educators might believe that playing video games, reading comic books, and watching television shows are harmful to people's well-being. Thus, many well-intentioned providers and/or family members might discourage and even criticize the trauma survivor's reliance on fictional connections for comfort without realizing their potentially life-saving nature. However, more recent studies demonstrate that video games and television shows have helped people to better manage their mental health during the COVID pandemic, as well as during major life stressors, such as when undergoing a loss or a major surgery. Other studies show that popular culture can help people to become more compassionate, feel less lonely, and be more likely to engage in helping behaviors. This is where Superhero Therapy comes in. Superhero Therapy (ST) refers to incorporating popular culture into evidence-based therapy (such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, EMDR, DBT, and many others) to destigmatize the client's mental health experience and promote engagement in treatment. Above all, Superhero Therapy aims to assist the client in becoming their own version of a superhero in real life (IRL), fostering posttraumatic growth and being more willing to engage in treatment-related practices. Everyday Nonviolence: Extraordinary People Speaking Truth to Power
In this episode, the Everyday Nonviolence podcast explores the painful history of Indigenous Boarding Schools. We also share examples of what is being done by faith communities to address the harm caused by these church-run schools. Host Diane Sandberg speaks first with Paula Palmer, Co-Director of “Toward Right Relationship with Native Peoples,” about her research into Quaker-run schools and the multi-generational damage these institutions wrought on Native communities. In a second conversation, Elona Street-Stewart, Ruling Elder and synod executive in the Presybterian Church (USA), talks with Diane about Restorative Actions, a Twin Cities initiative that invites predominantly white churches to voluntarily return the wealth that they accrued from systemic inequities back to Afro-American and Indigenous communities. Both guests offer a variety of ways for individuals and religious communities to support and learn from Indigenous people. ABOUT THE GUESTS Paula Palmer is a sociologist, writer, and activist for human rights, social justice, and environmental protection. As co-director of Toward Right Relationship with Native Peoples, a program of Friends Peace Teams, she created and facilitates workshops on the “Roots of Injustice, Seeds of Change: Toward Right Relationship with America's Native Peoples” (for adults) and “Re-Discovering America: Understanding Colonization” (for middle schools and high schools). As the 2016 Pendle Hill Cadbury Scholar, she conducted research and produced articles and videos about the role Quakers played during the era of the Indian Boarding Schools. Paula is a recipient of the Elise Boulding Peacemaker of the Year Award from the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center; the Jack Gore Memorial Peace Award from the American Friends Service Committee; the International Human Rights Award from the United Nations Association of Boulder County; and the Multicultural Award in the “Partners” category from the Boulder County Community Action Programs. Andrea is a board member of the United Nations Association, New York, helping to take stake a stand on issues including human trafficking. Today, we are going to talk about branding, marketing, nurturing your soul, what it's been like to go through COVID in the last year, and all of the things that we've had to juggle. We talk about the different ways that you can reinvent or pivot and create the life you want. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Why she found her “home” in Spain Defining your Reinvention moments How to recognize it's time for Reinvention How brands have this huge impact on the community VaynerX's Marketing for the Now The need for human connection Episode Highlights: Defining Your Reinvention Moments These are the eye-opening moments when you realize that as a human being, you're entitled to live that way. The moment you allow yourself to entitle yourself with that, you try to make decisions based around that. You know that life is more than just work or a job. You may love what you do with work, but that's not all you do and it's not all that you are. How to Recognize It's Time for a Reinvention Reinvention comes in all shapes and sizes. Most people think you have to hit a moment of crisis that will allow you to reevaluate and take a sharp turn. But many other times, if you just keep your eyes wide open and you don't look at "either/or" but just say “yes, and…” and really dive in, it's unbelievable what can happen. It's not even necessarily disrupting and reinventing your career, but looking at your life and taking every part of yourself. Knowing you're entitled to do that is your first step. The next is to put yourself on a path to be able to do that. At the end of the day, you just have to figure out how to be happy and live a good life. It's not that complicated. The Impact of Brands in Raising Consciousness There has been a crisis of consciousness everywhere this year. And brands now have realized their impact on communities and being able to infuse consciousness into everything is very powerful. As a community, we all can step into this. Brands even have more of an obligation to help in leaning in and bringing people together than governments and other important role models right in the world. As a leader, it's essential to be able to define these behavioral shifts, not just the marketing shifts. Such pivot allows you to not only serve your customers but lead the people as well. The Need for Human Connection As with many companies where the culture is incredibly dynamic, keeping that same enthusiasm alive is definitely a challenge. And so, you want to make everyone feel like they're close to culture. As human beings, we've got vulnerabilities and it's essential to have that space for us to be able to share things so we can continue to learn, be nurtured, and grow so we won't get stagnant.
