Midwestern music-makers FAKE BLIND DATE are an "alt-pop / eclecti-rock / punkabilly /outlaw-cowgirl / midnight-jazz-dive quartet." (Yup--yet another one of those. Yawn.) Ingredients: Kari Lueneberg aka Molli Putz, on guitar, lead vocal, and flute; journeyman bassist, singer, 'n' harmonica-slinger Paul McComas; unparalleled up-'n'-comer Megan Rault on sax, flute, 'n' jazz vocal; and "Peter Van Eck a- drummin' like HECK!" FBD was conceived in May 2018 at Chicago's Cafe Cabaret Uptown, hatched three months later at a Martyrs' Club anti-rape benefit, dormant during 2020's pandemic lockdown, and re-birthed (definitely not "born again") in June 2021 at Montrose Saloon. A December '21 live-online podcast benefiting the Ed Asner Family Center solidified the current lineup. Their prior 50/50 originals/covers ratio is tiltin' toward their own songs as the band eyes an eponymous 2023 debut-album on Chicago Acoustic Underground's CAUDog Records (the label that released Paul's-&-Maya Kuper's acclaimed 2017 Unplugged: A Survivor's Story... Soundtrack). Click on this link to see the videos from this Podcast

I found this Podcast on a hard drive that I replaced a few years ago. This is Ryland Foxx who was in in the afternoon before his performance at Space in Evanston. In the exclusive terrain where the melodic and harmonic sensibilities of a weathered, Americana singer/songwriter meet the brashness of a seasoned punk rock artist, you'll find Ryland Foxx's boots firmly planted. Influenced by modern solo artists like Ryan Adams, Jason Isbell, and Butch Walker, as well as classic rock/punk acts like Gin Blossoms, The Misfits, and The Ramones- his roots are evident yet tastefully confident, as Foxx carries his audience through an array of eras and styles in the unparalleled journey to his musical destinations. Videos from this Podcast

Since then, the band became a second family for its members. They have performed in many local Chicago venues and released its full album Leo in late 2018. Rosalba Valdez is a Mexican-American musician bred in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. From the age of five, Rosalba would take guitar classes anywhere and everywhere they were offered in her community. "Rosie" would eventually find a home at Lincoln United Methodist Church, led by activists/pastors Emma Lozano and Walter Coleman. Regularly playing for Sunday services and community events lead her to grow up in an environment of activism and community engagement/organizing all while finding her music had as much place in the struggle as it did anywhere else. Rosie learned that she could speak out about the injustices in her community and stay true to her identity all while pursuing her passion. The name of her debut EP, "Yo Soy Mexicana," comes from the immense pride Rosalba has for being of Mexican descent and being first generation, Mexican-American born of immigrant parents. In today's political climate Rosalba believes it is important to not only be vocal but active in the community. Conrad Merced is a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer based out of Chicago, IL. Being raised in a musical family, he started playing in music groups at the age of 13. He was the former front man for the indie rock band The Red Jacket, and the shoegaze, electronic duo Shoplifter. His music has been featured in films, podcasts and in various music compilations. At the age of 25, Conrad abruptly stopped writing and playing music.Tender BeatsFollowing the unexpected death of his mother, Conrad picked up his guitar after a ten year hiatus and began writing songs for the album "Tender Beats." This lush collection of songs feature catchy finger-style acoustic guitar backed behind atmospheric, digital textures and drum machines to create a unique blend of ambient electronic-folk.Conrad teamed up with engineer Rick Riggs at Handwritten Recording Studio to help shape and bring to life his wall of sound. The album could have easily stood alone as a folk album but with the composition of orchestral instruments, vintage synthesizers and electronic drum machines, the album bends genres without compromising its melody and thoughtful lyrics. Conrad's songs have been described as "Nick Drake meets Roxy Music" and "Elliott Smith meets Radiohead."The themes of the album touch on dealing with the loss and death of a loved one, reflections on aging, overcoming writer's block, breaking up, falling in love, and a nostalgia piece about growing up in the 90's to immigrant parents. Click here to view the videos from this Podcast

Recorded by Matt Wright (Turnpike Troubadours) at the famed Prairie Sun Studios in Northern California, it blends together a seamless mix of classic country, western swing, and traditional southern folk. It reminded me of my Dad and I builing a model train setup in the basement long ago.An acclaimed advertising copywriter, Steve found additional creative release in the tenor sax, which he played for two decades. But on the heels of a divorce, he realized it was easier to tell stories without a mouthpiece in his face and he has been a prolific singer/songwriter ever since. His first album was released in 2013. He is currently working on his fourth. He has played stages all across the country, but he lives in Evanston, Il.

Julianne Q and the Band write a new definition of classic. Fronted by the powerful vocals and creative mind of Julianne Quaas, the now four-piece evolution is carving its own path into Chicago's music scene. Julianne Q's debut album (released 2017) has received international attention this year, and displays a 60s-70s tinged blues-rock flavor akin to Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, and Amy Winehouse. Julianne Q and The Band bring their classic rock and blues roots to the Chicago scene. With theatrical larger-than-life performances that embody the spirit of Woodstock, The Band leaves their audience with a truly one of a kind memorable experience. Moving into 2018, you can catch the dynamic group touring in and around the Midwest, as well as putting the talents of drummer and vocalist Jeff Mills, guitarist Chris Arwady, and bassist Egan Franke further into the spotlight. That's the best piece of advice Julianne Q has ever received. When Julianne was halfway through her senior of college, she had a choice to make: follow her heart and pursue music, or follow the theatre path she had laid out for herself through her college career. Just like her favorite poem by Robert Frost, Julianne took the road less travelled upon, and it has made all the difference. She knew she would regret more not pursuing her music dream, and so she did just that. Through her music career, Julianne is going to inspire others to listen to that little voice inside of their hearts and live the lives they were meant to live. Through soulful lyrics and powerful rock melodies, Julianne hopes you will hear her passion and drive in her music. But more importantly, she wants to inspire you to take that leap of faith and pursue your passion, just as she did.Click on this link to see all videos

Zion Rodman is a versatile musician who spends his free time singing and playing the guitar, bass, piano, and drums. He grew up in Cape Cod, MA, where he played around the cape since the age of 15 and eventually received a BA in music from the University of Massachusetts in Boston. He grew a fan base in New England and by 2017, Zion was performing at historic venues like Club Passim, Caffe Lena, and the House of Blues. He opened for national acts that include Ellis Paul and Jeffrey Gaines. In the summer of 2017, Zion teamed up with producer Alex Katz and released his debut full-length record You're Invited. The folk-rock album received praise and local media attention following its anticipated release. Crossfader Magazine wrote that in an era of "lo-fi bedroom projects, it's refreshing to hear a young creative voice this professionally produced, fully realized, and cohesively structured around a distinct personality and energy." Less than a year later, Zion released an EP titled "Did Not Wake up Today" on January 20th, 2018. This project features heavier topics and harder rock than his debut album. Even before its release, the title track was recognized by AFROPUNK: "Rodman turns up the volume of his melodic indie pop, with his stunning voice just barely masking his anger beneath the hook." Zion currently lives in Chicago with his girlfriend and his cat. While getting settled in a new city, he is exploring folk venues and putting together a professional band to dig into the midwest rock scene. He will be touring from Chicago to Boston in early May of 2018.Click here to see all the videos from this show

On a cold and Sunny day, into the studio comes a ray of that sunshine by the name of Humbird. Hailing from Minnesota and in Chicago for a show she came in and blew me away as she will you. After traversing 5 continents and 20 countries with only a guitar and a backpack, Humbird returns home to sing songs from the edge of the world. Combining a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale, Humbird stretches traditional genres of folk and Americana to embrace the unexpected. This music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house, it leaves breadcrumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars. Creating music out of a mosaic of influences like Joni Mitchell, Bon Iver and Bill Frisell, Humbird weaves it all together with powerful lyrics and a stubborn pursuit of the sound of the North. The release of Humbird's double EP "Elsewhere" and "Where Else" in Summer 2017 is just the beginning. Click here to see all the videos from this show
