The Great Women Artists

I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is the esteemed American painter, Lois Dodd. At 98-years-old, Dodd is famed for her paintings of her immediate surroundings, from landscapes to house roofs, windows and stairs. She paints the Night, day; outside, inside; doors that are painted, chipped; new, worn; and loved. While there is a seemingly absence of people, Dodd's paintings capture whole worlds and narratives – whether it be hose fires, or laundry hanging from a washing line. It's as though the colour, weather, light, frames, stairs, or cracks retain years worth of stories and memories, or are even characters in themselves. Steeped in American art and cultural history, referencing the likes of Hopper or Hitchcock, Dodd's works emphasise a voyeuristic, but also familiar nature. Born in 1927, Dodd was born and raised in New Jersey, mostly by her three older sisters after her parents' untimely death when she was young. It was then to Cooper Union in the 1940s, where she was amongst the burgeoning New York art scene, opening the artist-run space, the Tanager Gallery in 1952, at a similar time to iconic exhibitions such as the Ninth Street Show. Venturing to Maine, living by her artist friends Alex Katz and Jean Cohen, she took to painting views of the landscape, and by the end of the 1960s, this was now framed through a window: a perspective and device she has constantly reworked and reinvented, whether it be pressed up against her window on the Bowery, looking out onto her New York view, or of the cracked windows set in the lush, verdant countryside. Dodd allows her viewer to see something we thought we knew so well. She is an observer of nature – her works are about seeing the things that pass others by. As the critic Roberta Smith wrote in 2013: “Ms. Dodd loves the observed world. [...] She always searches out the underlying geometry but also the underlying life, and the sheer strangeness of it all.” I would also add that she is acute at highlighting the things that others iss - take her window portraits of New York City, a favorite being one fro November 2016, of her view that although is taken p by windows, places emphasis on a golden tree or blue sky, as if to latch on to the nature that grows even in the city, and the hope and beauty that exists even in the most unexpected places… Today we are recording in Dodd's home/studio in New Jersey… ahead of her major exhibition at Kunstmuseum Den Haag that opens this August in The Netherlands… Being here, I feel set in a Lois Dodd painting, brought to life by the motifs that surround me – and I can't wait to find out more. https://www.kunstmuseum.nl/en/exhibitions/lois-dodd https://www.alexandregallery.com/artists-work/lois-dodd#tab:slideshow;tab-1:thumbnails -- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.famm.com/en/ https://www.instagram.com/famm_mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 Follow us: Katy Hessel: @thegreatwomenartists / @katy.hessel Sound editing by Mikaela Carmichael Technical support: Viva Ruggi Music by Ben Wetherfield

We respect the mission of Two Chairs because we believe that human potential relies on individuals remaining mentally strong. Enter Alex Katz. He has a clear vision for company growth and expansion, deeply rooted in his personal experiences and commitment to improving mental health care. But this is not just about access, the systems are highly sophisticated to introduce the patient to the right therapist based on personalized matching factors. Alex emphasizes the importance of building a strong foundation before scaling, particularly in healthcare, where patient outcomes are critical. His approach involves investing in the right clinical culture and technology, ensuring that the company stays true to its core values of patient and clinician care while attracting aligned investors. As Two Chairs has grown to connect around 600 therapists with clients - and these are employees, not an independent network so they are verified and aligned with the brand. Alex aspires to expand the company's reach across multiple states, addressing the mental health crisis on a larger scale and making quality care accessible to more communities. Highlights of our conversation: - Two Chairs aims to expand to help more people by making it easier to find the right therapist. In fact, 98% of clients find the right therapist on the first try. - The matching algorithm used by Two Chairs considers therapist identity, clinical expertise, therapeutic style, and logistical factors to ensure patient satisfaction. - Two Chairs is proud to have diverse, multi-lingual, multicultural therapists that are direct employees. - Alex discusses the barriers to accessing therapy and mental health services across states due to licensing restrictions and discusses future changes in the health space. Currently they serve California, Florida, and Washington. - Founder support networks are crucial for navigating the challenges of leadership, as highlighted by Alex in the success of Two Chairs. Alex Katz is the Founder and CEO of Two Chairs, an innovative multi-state outpatient mental health system. Prior to founding Two Chairs, Alex led the Consumer Goods group at Palantir Technologies and served large health systems at McKinsey & Company, where he gained an appreciation for the barriers to getting great care within the existing U.S. healthcare system. He received his M.S. and B.A. from Stanford University. Alex Katz talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Katz, born in Brooklyn in 1927, is one of the most distinctive and influential painters of recent decades. Since he began making art in the 1940s, he has aimed to paint what he has called “the now”: to distil fleeting visual experiences into timeless art. It might be a spark of interaction between friends or family, the play of light across water, a field of grass or between the leaves of a tree, the movements of dancers, the electric illumination of an office building at night, or—more than anything else—stolen glances, everyday gestures and intimate exchanges with his wife Ada, who he has painted more than 1,000 times since they married in 1958. From the start, Katz has aimed to match what he calls the “muscularity” of the Abstract Expressionist artists that were dominant in New York when he emerged onto the art scene there in the 1950s, while never giving up on observed reality. He has said “the optical element is the most important thing to me”. He discusses the early influence of Paul Cezanne, the enduring power of his forebears, from Giotto to Rubens and Willem de Kooning, and his admiration for artists as diverse as Utamaro, Martha Diamond and Chantal Joffe. He reflects on the “emotional extension” of the poet Frank O'Hara and his interest in jazz maestros like Pres and Charlie Parker. Plus, he answers our usual questions, including the ultimate: what is art for?Alex Katz: Claire, Grass and Water, Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice, Italy, 17 April-29 September; Alex Katz: Wedding Dresses, Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine, US, until 2 June; Alex Katz: Collaborations with Poets, The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio, 15 September-15 November. Serge Strosberg is an acclaimed international artist who is known for his realist and expressionist portraits. After growing up in the US and Europe, he "received classical training at the prestigious Academie Julian in Paris and Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. In 2008, he exhibited his work at the Felix Nussbaum Museum (Germany) and the Musee de Pontoise (Paris) in Germany with Lucian Freud, Philip Pearlstein, Chaim Soutine, Alex Katz in major group exhibitions of realist painting." He works with oil and egg tempura to create large-scale commissioned pieces for institutions or families. His goal in each painted portrait is to include the personality of the person; not just a photo likeness. Beyond this, his portfolio is full of concepts that critique the elite extremes of American culture (fashion, the 1%..) through figurative pieces that consider both composition and location as a means of questioning high society and cultural norms. He offers a candid description of what it is like to work on his own terms with the support of cultural organizations, the struggle of working within the established gallery system, and the gift of being able to spend his life making art. The cover art of this episode is one of Serge's paintings- a portrait of Blake Byrne --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thestolenhourspodcast/message

Hey there, Friends! This week we catch up with Rosay with Jaime and Alex Katz of Protector Cellars! About Rosay with Jaime Jaime Brown is Boston-based Wine & Beauty Freelance Writer and Digital Content Creator. She is the CEO Co-Founder of SWEDISH JEALOUSY LIPSTICKS, a Made for All shades, Cruelty-Free and Gluten-Free Lipstick brand founded to bridge the gap usually found in Lipstick shades. Jaime also works as the Lead Content Writer for TriWine App, a new and advanced wine application that allows you to build your ecosystem of wine tastings! In a nutshell, Jaime is a writer obsessed with Red lipstick and Rosé. About Protector Cellars The roots of any good wine are in the vineyard. When I started making wine in California a decade ago, harvests were still on the kind of schedule they had been on for the previous 30 years. But with each successive year, droughts became more severe, harvests started earlier, and wildfires torched vineyard lands with increasing regularity. I realized that I had the responsibility and the opportunity to do something about it, and that's why I started Protector Cellars. A winery that would actually be CLIMATE POSITIVE. CLIMATE POSITIVE means that we go beyond carbon neutral, and actually have a net positive effect on the environment by pulling more greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere than we put in. So how do we accomplish this ambitious goal? The obvious place to start on this mission was in the vineyard. Typically, about 40% of the greenhouse gas emissions attributable to a bottle of wine are produced in the vineyard. Certified sustainable vineyards go through a rigorous certification process, much of which revolves around environmental stewardship. By reducing electricity, water, pesticides, and fossil fuel consumption, vineyards are able to significantly reduce their greenhouse gas output. That's why all of our grapes come from certified sustainable vineyards. The next and most notable target is the glass bottle. Roughly 50% of the greenhouse gas emissions attributable to a bottle of wine are purely due to the production of the glass bottle
