A Look at Coronavirus Outbreaks at Prisons around California Protesters gathered over the weekend outside a federal prison facility in Lompoc, home to the worst COVID-19 outbreak in the entire federal prison system with 900 inmates testing positive and 2 deaths so far. Reporter: Kathryn Barnes, KCRW Republican Groups Sue California Over Vote-By-Mail Plans Voting rights advocates are pushing back against the claim that letting Californians vote by mail this November is a "brazen power grab." That’s the phrase Republicans used in a lawsuit they filed this weekend against state officials over plans to transition to universal mail-in ballots because of the pandemic. Reporter: Tara Siler, KQED Assembly to Discuss State Budget and Take Back Control from Newsom Today at the State Capitol, the Assembly is meeting as what’s known "a Committee of the Whole." That means the Assembly will talk about a topic without having to take a vote. That topic, no surprise, is the sad state of California’s budget during the state shutdown. And it comes against the backdrop of a restless legislature that’s ceded quite a bit of power to Governor Gavin Newsom during this emergency and is ready to take some control. Reporter: Guy Marzorati, KQED Politics California Could Lose a Seat in Congress Despite some COVID-19 related delays, the census is still underway. Next year that data will determine how many representatives in Congress each state gets. And for the first time ever in California’s history one seat will likely be on the chopping block. Reporter: Caroline Champlin, KPCC Memorial Day Beach-Goer: Everyone Needs an Escape Hatch During Quarantine On this Memorial Day weekend, a lot of Californians did as Californians do. They and went to the beach. For the most part, it seems, we did a pretty good job of following social distancing rules. Getting outside is usually a big part of the holiday weekend which is the unofficial start of summer. The California Report’s Saul Gonzalez checked out the boardwalk at Venice Beach this weekend. On episode 13 we sat down with Ajay Fresh, founder of #HashtagLunchbag #HashtagLunchbag began on Christmas 2012 in a Los Angeles apartment by a group of friends who were having trouble finding a fun & meaningful way to give back. After a few failed attempts, we decided to take it upon ourselves and create our own experience. We went to our local grocery store and bought enough food to prepare 100 lunches (the kind your mom made you in grade school that made the other kids jealous). We sang and danced. We cracked jokes. We took breaks to watch funny Youtube videos. We connected with each other on a different level, while having the time of our lives! We hit the streets near the Santa Monica Pier and Venice Boardwalk looking for anyone that could use a meal. We smiled when asking people if they were hungry. We exchanged pleasantries while handing over our creations. We acknowledged their humanity, as well as our own. When we were done, we felt awesome and wanted to share with our friends! So we did. We shared on each of our social media platforms, jokingly tagging our posts with #HashtagLunchbag as an ode to hashtags.... plus it rhymed with what we were distributing (simple enough, right?). We didn't originally intend to repeat our efforts but shortly after sharing, we received an abnormally large amount of likes/comments/calls/texts/emails from people telling us how amazing this looked & wanting to join us for "the next one." Riding the high of our good deeds, we decided to repeat our efforts a month later in January 2013. More of our friends joined, more meals were made, and more people were fed. Once again, we felt awesome and once again, we shared. The ripple continued and more people were hitting us up wanting to know how they could get involved. We ran it back for another go 'round in February 2013, growing out of our apartment to a local restaurant. We set a goal of making 1,000 meals. 100 hundred people showed up for the party. We added love notes of encouragement to each meal to further acknowledge those we were feeding, reminding them that they weren't forgotten. Just like we did, everyone went on to share their experiences on their social platforms, intriguing and inspiring their friends and their followers. Meet the authors of this easy to read, illustrated manual of the mind! Discover 7 easy tips to changing your experience of life from the inside out - for the better!LISA ESILELisa has a master’s degree in science. She regularly guest blogs on Tiny Buddha and has her own popular blog, LisaEsile.com where she writes and draws about how to feel contented even when crappy things happen. Lisa is the author of Reach Your Big Calm: 52 Powerful Messages to Quiet Your Mind and her e-book 7 Secrets Your Mind Doesn’t Want You to Know was downloaded over 12,000 times. As a young adult Lisa spent 5 years in bed with chronic fatigue syndrome. Later, she opened one of New Zealand’s first online bookstores, which she ran from Granity, a remote town on the West Coast of New Zealand. In 2009, scared that her CFS was returning, she spent a day doing nothing and being silent, as a way to change old habits and heal. What started as one day turned into three, then into a month, then eventually into what Lisa calls ‘her year of silence.Along with weekly conversations with friend and psychologist Don Morrison, Lisa emerged with a fresh understanding of the mind’s agenda. She realized that most of us spend our lives unwittingly trailing around after our mind, unable to access the deep reservoir of inner calm and self-assuredness that resides within. She could see that feeling peaceful and contented comes from knowing how to use the mind’s awesome power for what it’s good at, and knowing how to put it in its place when it starts to become a nuisance and run amok.Lisa grew up thinking that creativity was only for some people (not her) and can’t believe she now writes and draws for a living. She loves potatoes, mulch and packing delicious road snacks when going on a trip.FRANCO ESILEFranco spent his early years as a touring musician around the US and The Caribbean. In his late teens he moved into Boston and hired himself out as a bass player while taking writing courses at the Harvard Extension night school. He briefly attended the Berklee School of Music and studied privately under Charlie Benacos. He’s written and arranged for his own original bands and also written music for poetical theater, including Life After Motown–produced by Nobel Poet Laureate Derek Walcott, and Where The Red Road Runs, a Native American perspective of the European settlement of the Americas, which ran for six months in a Cambridge theater. In 1995 Franco was introduced to the writings of George Pransky, Sydney Banks, and the Psychology of Mind, which later became Three Principles Psychology. He began to see the role his mind plays in his everyday life and to look there first for the source of any anxiety or stress. What he learned in this time period would later inform his contribution to “Whose Mind Is It Anyway?”Today, Franco works in film production a>http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0260611/> in Los Angeles. He collaborates with Lisa on her blog and other projects. Among his favorite places to be is in his recording studio where, among other projects, he’s recorded 9 albums for homeless street musicians he met on the Venice Boardwalk. They’d leave his studio with a digital master they could duplicate sell on the boardwalk. A CD of Franco’s original songs is due out in 2016. Franco collaborates with Lisa on her blog.
Comedian, YouTube content creator, and Co-Founder of Maker Studios, Kassem G, joins Rhett & Link this week to discuss how moving from Saudi Arabia to the U.S. shaped him as a young child, why a paranoid fear of getting murdered on the Venice Boardwalk halted the production of one of his most popular series, and the effect that the $500 million sale of Maker to Disney had on his outlook on content creation. *NOTE: This conversation contains adult themes and language.
