As the United States remains stalled on full disclosure and holding Epstein file perpetrators accountable, the Parliament of Victoria, Australia, has launched an inquiry into the recruitment methods and societal impacts of cults and organized fringe groups. Maria Esguerra is one of the directors of The Olive Leaf Network who testified and presented a written submission at the public hearing of this inquiry in November 2025, alongside her co-directors Mirriam Francis and Dani Sorensen. Maria is a Queensland-based registered psychologist with over 15 years of experience working with people with disabilities. Bringing her professional expertise as well as personal insight from being a Second-Generation Adult (SGA) cult survivor, she is a leading voice for those harmed by high-control groups in Australia, as well as her global advocacy. Maria was born into and raised in the Children of God cult, one of the most abusive cults. The cult rebranded as “The Family” (one of numerous cults calling themselves this). She escaped at age 22 with her two young children. The Core Argument stated in The Olive Leaf Network's written submission to the Parliament of Victoria inquiry, titled Children in Cults, is “Children in high-demand groups are victims of systemic coercive control”, not “recruits.” They are captives placed into systems of abuse by manipulated caregivers.” This leads to their Central Thesis statement, “The fundamental rights and safety of a child must supersede the claimed religious freedoms of any group or parent.” In our discussion, Maria emphasized, “My care is always for the most marginalized and the victims.” She noted the unique importance of focusing on the survivors, especially in SGA conversations, versus empathizing with adults who may have brought these children into the cult for a variety of reasons. In our discussion, Maria noted the importance of not remaining neutral in the face of harm against children, as “it's important to look at the impact over the intent.” I agreed and noted that, while I was coerced into certain modes of thinking during my time in the Moonies, I would still expect to be held accountable for any criminal behavior committed during that time. Maria cautioned against protecting perpetrators or people who have harmed children or destroyed their lives. She noted that in addition to the mental, physical, or sexual abuses that children may experience during their time in a cult, they may lack even the most basic paperwork to document citizenship or necessary identification later. “We're not talking about the same thing here. We're not talking about an adult being coerced into something and having sort of a psychological moral injury, versus a child who's had serious crimes,” she said. “Just because you are sort of coerced into it doesn't negate the harm of that person,” she later followed. Evan Polasky, Director of Capital Raising for Blackgate, reveals how his firm is achieving attractive 7-8% cap rates in suburban retail strip centers. Unlike the crowded multifamily market, Blackgate focuses on smaller community centers with necessity-based tenants like urgent care, dentists, quick-serve restaurants, and tutoring centers. With new construction at historic lows and high tenant demand, Evan explains why the retail leasing environment has "never been easier," offering stable, less competitive investment opportunities.

Send Katie a Text Message!! If you're booked out, have steady inquiries, and your revenue looks solid — but you still feel capped — this episode is for you. High demand does not automatically mean you're ready to scale your interior design business. If you can't take on more without breaking something, it's not a marketing problem. It's a structural one.In this episode, I'm breaking down why revenue growth and scalability are not the same thing. So many six-figure designers assume that because they're busy, they're ready to grow. But if everything still runs through you — the decisions, the approvals, the client access — you've built a founder-centered firm that will eventually hit a ceiling. In this episode, I cover:Why high demand doesn't equal scalabilityThe difference between growth and sustainable scalingWhy hiring more team or raising rates won't fix fragile systemsHow founder bottlenecks cap your capacityWhat it means to scale decision-making instead of scaling demandWhy ease and margin — not just revenue — signal readiness to growTrue scalability happens when revenue can increase without equal growth in founder labor. It happens when systems create breathing room, decisions are decentralized strategically, and your leadership time is protected. If you feel booked but bottlenecked, you're not failing — your structure just hasn't caught up yet. And that's fixable. If you're ready to redesign your business so it can handle growth without you carrying all of it, head over to FixMyDesignBiz.com and book a 15-minute problem-solving call. What begins as a sincere search for meaning can quietly become control. In this episode, you'll hear how devotion can blur into self-erasure—and what it takes to find your voice again. This conversation is for anyone navigating a high-demand group, spiritual community, or power dynamic that feels “off.” Hosted by Sayan on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, journalist and chef Priya Hutner shares her journey from joining an ashram as a teen to leadership, awakening, and healing through writing, therapy, and rebuilding self-trust. About the Guest: Priya Hutner is a journalist and chef, and a former CEO of an ashram community. She authored the memoir Chasing Nirvana, reflecting on spirituality, control, and recovery. Key Takeaways: Notice “slow-burn” red flags: shaming, fear-based loyalty, and loss of agency. Ask: “Can I question, think critically, and leave without punishment?” Track incongruence between teachings and lived reality. Rebuild self-trust through supportive practices (therapy, writing, reflection). Separate genuine spirituality from systems that demand self-erasure. 5. If there's one issue that never really goes away for Australia's aviation sector, it's airfares. Massive demand has pushed prices up, according to the ACCC, with October airfares at their highest since 2022, despite both Qantas Group and Virgin Australia adding extra capacity. To make matters worse for those out west, the WA government is set to increase caps for regional airfares during "high-demand" periods, while the spectre of rising airfares also appears to have spooked Canberra into nixing plans for an EU-style "pay-on-delay" scheme. On this week's Australian Aviation Podcast, Jake and David look at the factors putting the squeeze on Australian travellers' wallets, and whether newer, larger, and more efficient aircraft might bring some relief. Plus, the last Qantas A380 comes home, skydiving instructors jump off the job, and is Australia playing catch-up on border processing technology?

In this episode, hosts Cardon Ellis, Jonah Barnes, and Brittany Ellis dive into the sometimes controversial perception of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often referred to as Mormons) as a "high demand" religion. They unpack how this label is often used negatively by outsiders, but also highlight the admiration and even envy it inspires in other faith communities, especially when it comes to devotion and youth engagement. The discussion is kicked off by referencing an article from Christianity Today, written by Russell Moore, a self-described orthodox Christian. Moore expresses both skepticism and candid respect for the expectations placed on Latter-day Saint youths—specifically the tradition of missionary service. He notes that, despite initial misgivings, he came to appreciate how the mission experience transforms young people, teaching discipline, leadership, self-reliance, and a deepened faith, even when measurable "success" (like baptisms) doesn't happen.

President Trump’s use of federal immigration officers to arrest people alleged to be in the country without legal status has led to mass arrests, detentions and deportations. Some of those are U.S. citizens, and at least one such man in Milwaukie is suing the federal government over his unlawful detention. Alyssa Walker Keller is a coordinator for the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition (PIRC). She says in years past, their statewide hotline, 888-622-1510, might receive about 50 calls in a typical month. In the last two weeks, she says, the number is more like 2,000. Walker Keller says the work of the organization is only possible with volunteers who give their time and expertise to support those targeted by ICE and their families. She joins us to tell us more about the growing demands on PIRC and the role it’s increasingly playing as heightened ICE activity continues.

In this episode of The Smart Property Investment Show, host Emilie Lauer speaks with the chair of the Property Investment Professionals of Australia (PIPA), Lachlan Vidler, to unpack the current state and key trends of Australia's real estate investment market. The discussion delves into the latest PIPA investor sentiment survey, which reveals the key challenges for property investors, the impact of the three rate cuts, surging demand, limited stock, and rapidly rising property prices. Lachlan highlights the difficulty of adding new stock to the market, citing construction hurdles, regulatory red tape, and high costs that limit both large- and small-scale investors. According to the survey, policy changes, compliance costs, and land tax pressures are prompting some investors to sell. Melbourne has emerged as a top choice for investment due to relative affordability, with Brisbane and regional markets also attracting attention, thanks to strong infrastructure and lifestyle appeal. While nearly 60 per cent still consider it a good time to invest, Lachlan expresses cautious optimism, noting potential rate cuts and first home buyer schemes while urging investors to avoid FOMO and plan strategically.
