The approach and the entrance to the Los Angeles Central Library in the City's downtown, is both dramatic and inviting. The experience can conjure the feeling of entering a Cathedral. One is walking through arches, rotundas, gothic high ceilings past large posters, rare paintings and sculpture, and ahead the awesome sight of escalators facing huge figurines hanging overhead. It is from the escalators that you will have a dizzying choice of reading rooms to visit like the International Room with books in over 100 different languages, the History Room, The Literacy Room for tutoring, and so many more to explore. Christina Rice, Senior Librarian of the Photo Collection and Madeline Pena, Director of Engagement and Learning Division, are the dynamic and creative team who for over the last two years have been preparing for a grand celebration of this very 100 year old building and its history. They named this Centennial, CENTRAL 100, 1926 to 2026. The theme is, “Celebrating a Century of the Light of Learning”. It is a celebration of the architecture, of the survival of the Central Library and its role as a “crown jewel” of a Library system of 73 branches beloved in a City that has gown with it in the last 100 years. The highlight of the year long activities is the July 11th Festival to be held all day, from 10:00 a. m. to 4:00 p. m. The City of Los Angeles began to build a magnificent architectural beauty for its Central Library in the downtown area. As part of the ceremony to mark the building's site in 1925, a time capsule was created and buried. When the Central Library opened its doors in July of 1926, the Time Capsule was securely covered buried in a cornerstone made of Indiana Limestone. Did the Leaders of the City and the Library imagine then that this Time Capsule would not be seen nor opened for 100 years, until May of 2026? Todd Lerew, Director of Special Projects for the Los Angeles Library Foundation, tells us about that moment, the effort it took to retrieve it, and what was found once opened. For Todd, he considers that to be his greatest experience in his eleven year career at the Library. This historic event came about for the celebration of the Centennial of the iconic building's architectural achievement and the importance of Libraries to the citizens of Los Angeles. Ce dimanche, dans IDEES, Pierre-Edouard Deldique reçoit Christian Sommer, l'éditeur de l'œuvre maîtresse du philosophe allemand intitulée : « Le Monde comme volonté et représentation » dans la prestigieuse collection « La Pléiade » chez Gallimard.   Ce livre publié en 1819 est un livre à la fois métaphysique, esthétique, éthique et littéraire, qui propose une vision du monde d'une rare puissance. Notre invité, spécialiste de philosophie, lui rend justice en soulignant à la fois la rigueur conceptuelle et la puissance stylistique d'un texte souvent réduit à tort à son pessimisme. Schopenhauer y développe la thèse suivante : le monde est double. Il est représentation, c'est‑à‑dire phénomène structuré par notre esprit, et il est aussi volonté, une force métaphysique irrationnelle qui anime toute chose. Nous sommes dépendants d'elle. Le philosophe reprend Kant : nous ne connaissons jamais les choses en soi, seulement les phénomènes tels qu'ils apparaissent dans les formes de notre esprit.  Cette thèse permet à Schopenhauer d'affirmer que le sujet est la condition de possibilité du monde. Le réel n'est pas un donné brut : il est une construction. Alors que se cache-t-il derrière la représentation ? La seconde partie de ce livre majeur introduit la notion centrale de volonté. Il ne s'agit pas ici de la volonté consciente ou rationnelle, mais d'une force aveugle, irrésistible, universelle, qui traverse la nature entière. Conséquence: vivre, c'est vouloir ; vouloir, c'est manquer ; manquer, c'est souffrir. La vie oscille entre désir (souffrance) et satisfaction (ennui). D'où la réputation de pessimisme attachée à Schopenhauer. Dans la troisième partie de l'ouvrage, le penseur développe une théorie de l'art. L'art, dit‑il, suspend la volonté. Il nous permet de contempler les choses sans désir, sans intérêt, sans finalité. L'esthétique devient ainsi une voie de salut : l'art nous arrache momentanément à la souffrance du vouloir‑vivre. Enfin, le quatrième livre propose une morale fondée sur la compassion. Si la volonté est universelle, la souffrance l'est aussi. Reconnaître en autrui la même volonté qui nous traverse fonde une éthique de la pitié, proche du bouddhisme, de l'hindouisme. Mais la véritable délivrance, pour Schopenhauer, est plus radicale, elle passe par l'ascèse, la négation progressive du vouloir‑vivre. C'est une voie exigeante, presque mystique, qui vise à éteindre le désir lui‑même. Schopenhauer apparaît alors comme un penseur de la sobriété heureuse et de l'altruisme.
