The Joy of Football
The World Cup Is Underway - Martin Tyler Reports from Dallas

The Joy of Football

Martin Tyler joins Neil Barnett from Dallas as the FIFA World Cup gets properly underway, bringing a unique view from inside the tournament as football's biggest competition begins to take shape. From the atmosphere around Arlington and the arrival of supporters from across the globe, to life behind the scenes with the host broadcaster, Martin gives his first on-the-ground reflections from the USA. The pair introduce World Cup Wins and Woes, celebrating some of the early stories of the tournament while also tackling the controversies. There's discussion of Raúl Jiménez's emotional first World Cup goal for Mexico, South Africa's costly insistence on playing out from the back, the growing use of hydration breaks, the influence of set-piece coaches, and whether football is becoming too Americanised. In Martin Tyler's Letter From The Gantry, Martin reflects on major stories emerging away from the pitch, including Marc Cucurella's move back to Spain, Denzel Dumfries' rise, José Mourinho's return to Real Madrid, and the remarkable World Cup drama surrounding Japan captain Wataru Endo, who was surprisingly cut from the squad before the tournament began. He also shares some of the pronunciation challenges commentators face when working on a truly global event. Three of the Best returns with standout performers from the opening round of matches. Martin highlights Morocco's teenage midfield talent Isaac Belarouch, Neil makes the case for Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville, and there is praise for Graham Potter's Sweden, Flo Balogun's starring role for the USA, Virgil van Dijk's leadership, Ronald Koeman's legacy, and the brilliance of Achraf Hakimi, described as perhaps the best right-back in world football. Finally, One Trophy Wonders looks at international sides who have only lifted one major honour despite producing great players and memorable teams, including South Africa, Colombia, Portugal, the Netherlands and England. World Cup stories, football debate, commentary insight, and plenty of laughs from Dallas and London as the biggest tournament in sport begins. #worldcup #worldcup2026 #fifa #fifaworldcup #worldcupfinal  Hosted by The Revive Lounge Ltd UCsdye1hUxP4xhgBx9zvuSjg Subscribe to https://youtube.com/@TheReviveLounge?si=L5ddzrJrtSmErtJ5 Support the Pod https://patreon.com/TheJoysofFootballPodcast?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLink Read us on Substack https://martintylerandneilbarnett.substack.com/ Follow our Twitter https://x.com/TheJOF Follow our Tik Tok https://www.tiktok.com/@joy_of_football_pod?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc Follow our Instagram https://https://www.instagram.com/joy_of_football_pod/ Contact us via: therevivelounge@gmail.com Music by Arron Clague - https://www.instagram.com/arronclague?igsh=aHg1bjQ3OHpmaXIz Intro Sequence by Wellong Sadewo (wells.illustration): https://www.instagram.com/wells.illustration/ A massive thank you to our Patreon Supporters: Nick Parmenter Hillary Abbott Daniel Butigan Tommy Mck Katie Watson Nathan A Learn more about your ad choices. From a morale boosting win to mounting squad anxiety, Liverpool's Sunderland victory came at a cost. Dave Davis and David Lynch assess the growing injury and selection concerns shaping Arne Slot's season, starting with Wataru Endo's worrying knock after an impressive emergency right back display. With Trent Alexander Arnold, Jeremie Frimpong, and others already sidelined, the position is becoming a problem zone at a critical stage. Joe Gomez's return offers some relief, but fitness reliability remains a lingering concern. The conversation then shifts to Liverpool's faltering wing threat. Mohamed Salah's assist record continues to climb, yet performances suggest a physical drop off. Cody Gakpo's form slump raises tactical and developmental questions, is it system, confidence, or individual regression? Key talking points include: • Endo injury impact and right back depth • Gomez return and Frimpong timeline • Salah output vs physical decline debate • Gakpo role confusion and form collapse • Why winger recruitment looks inevitable There is also discussion around Curtis Jones, whose reduced minutes and transfer links hint at a potentially emotional summer departure. A squad still competing, but one increasingly showing the strain lines beneath the surface. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Liverpool rounded off their pre-season tour of the United States by thrashing rivals Manchester United 3-0. Goals from Fabio Carvalho, Curtis Jones and Kostas Tsimikas ensured the Reds made it three wins out of three across their trip Stateside. Liverpool reporter David Lynch watched all the action, and was impressed by another big step forward for Arne Slot's men. Here, he reflects on the performance and its importance as the club moves into a new era without Jurgen Klopp at the helm. Goalscorer Carvalho comes in for praise, as does goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, whose future is the subject of much speculation. The differing fortunes of Wataru Endo and Trey Nyoni on the tour are also analysed. Check out this round-up of the game and let us know your thoughts on how the Reds are looking under Slot in the comments. Liverpool's Premier League title hopes have been left in tatters after the Reds suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace. Eberechi Eze's early finish was the difference at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp's side failed to bounce back from their hefty loss at home to Atalanta on Thursday night. Wataru Endo was denied by the crossbar while Luis Diaz, Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota, and Mohamed Salah all missed good chances to equalise. But Liverpool were below-par against the Eagles as they fell to their first home defeat in the Premier League since October 2022. Had the Reds won, they would have, temporarily at least, overtaken Man City at the top of the Premier League table. Instead, they finish the weekend in third, knowing they will need a miracle if they are to stand any chance of finishing the season as champions. Jurgen Klopp dropped a Mohamed Salah replacement hint as Liverpool start the month with a double January dilemma. Klopp has joked that he hopes Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo suffer premature international exits when pondering how to replace both players in his Liverpool starting XI. The pair both started in the Reds' 4-2 victory over Newcastle United on New Year's Day, but they will now likely be unavailable for Liverpool for over a month as they depart to represent Egypt and Japan in the African Cup of Nations and Asian Cup respectively.  While Salah is unavailable, the rest of Liverpool's attacking options are ready for action after the Reds recently welcomed back Diogo Jota from a hamstring injury. With Harvey Elliott also an option, Klopp hinted how he intends to replace the Egyptian this month.  In this week's Blood Red Podcast, Host Beth Lindop is joined by Theo Squires and Paul Gorst to discuss the up and coming FA Cup tie against Arsenal and what plans Klopp has for the January transfer window.  Download the ECHO LFC App to listen to all of the Blood Red podcasts in one place, as well as read all the latest news and analysis on the Reds.  Download from the Apple App store now and Android app store now.
