Apologies for the late show today, but we're finally here to chat all about another big weekend in the Premier League title race, which saw Manchester City come from behind to win away at Liverpool, for only the second time under Pep Guardiola. After shout outs for the WSL, PSG v Marseille and a few other results (04:21), Musa and Ryan head to Anfield (11:23), which saw another unbelievable free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai give Liverpool the lead, a great comeback and the world being cruelly robbed of one of the silliest goals of the modern era. That meant the gap was the same at the top as before the weekend, following Arsenal's impressive 3-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday (30:52). Elsewhere, Aston Villa dropped more points, Manchester United may never lose again, Crystal Palace ended their winless streak and Cole Palmer scored another first half hat-trick.In Germany, Bayern and Dortmund teased a title race (48:13) and St. Pauli got a much needed win. Finally, there's a round-up of La Liga and a bit of chat about Ademola Lookman's move to Atlético Madrid (53:12).A reminder: Southbank Centre live show! March 1st! With special guest Nish Kumar! the Debrief

[Pictures from Sky Sports]Liverpool dropped points again with a crazy 3-3 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday evening. After a goalless first half, this game exploded into life in the second 45 minutes, with a quickfire double from Hugo Ekitike make it 1-0 in the 48th minute and 2-0 in the 50th minute. At this point, the Liverpool of last season probably would have run away with the game, but all is clearly not well in this Reds side, as they looked highly suspect at the back again.Leeds punish sloppy Liverpool defending to fight backFirst, a Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty breathed life into the game in the 73rd minute, and just two minutes later the two sides were level.Anton Stach found himself in far too much room in the penalty area as he fired in the first Leeds equaliser of the night, with pretty much everyone in that Liverpool back line to blame.Dominik Szoboszlai put Liverpool back in front as he finished well from a nice passing move to make it 3-2 in the 80th minute, but Leeds wouldn't give up, and eventually their persistence paid off.Deep into stoppage time, more poor LFC defending was punished as Leeds made it 3-3 through Ao Tanaka, who also scored in the midweek win over Chelsea. What next for Liverpool?Liverpool stay 8th in the Premier League, ten points off league leaders Arsenal. They've conceded a staggering 24 goals in 15 league games, that's more than 15th place Fulham and just one fewer than relegation strugglers Nottingham Forest. That is at least three games without a defeat for the Reds, but it's two draws in a row and just one win their last six.Next up for Arne Slot's side is an away game against Inter Milan in the Champions League, and then Brighton at home and Tottenham away in the Premier League before Christmas. Can Slot turn this around? Do you see him keeping his job for much longer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! This is a public episode. The AnfieldIndex USA era kicks off in heartfelt, chaotic and wonderfully honest fashion as new host Ross Carper steps up to the mic for the very first time. In this opening episode, Ross introduces his journey into Liverpool fandom, his mission to build a thriving American Reds community, and the origins of the Stateside Scouser show. From watching matches at dawn on the US West Coast to creating a local supporters' hub in Spokane, he shares the relatable, often hilarious reality of being a relatively new Red trying to immerse himself in the club's history and culture. Ross reflects on the emotional turbulence of Liverpool's season, the tragedy that shook the club in the summer, and standout moments featuring Conor Bradley, Dominik Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz. He also launches his recurring segment “American Idiot”, where he invites listeners to educate him on parts of the global game that still baffle him, beginning with the mystery of why missing pre-season seems to break elite footballers. The episode closes with a look back at the rough pilot that inspired the relaunch, featuring Ross and close friend David debating fandom, choosing a club, Liverpool's history, Klopp's legacy, and what it means to truly commit to the Reds. A warm, funny and deeply personal opening chapter, perfect for American fans finding their way into Liverpool's world. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Argentine headed home Dominik Szoboszlai's free-kick to clinch a deserved win for Arne Slot's side, who would have won by more if not for a number of stunning saves from Thibaut Courtois. Welcome dear listener to First State Kopites. The podcast of the Premier League Champions. I'm Paul and today I am joined by Daz and Justin. Podcast has been slow in recording….Part One:‘I was incredibly disheartened last night by the general reaction to the result, and the poor analysis that followed in many quarters; even from some of the more rational analysts. I find the hysteria after defeats far harder to take than actually just losing a game of football, even if that part is painful too.Part Two: Eintracht Frankfurt - WINNING is good.Liverpool suddenly had that second-half performance from 1-3 to 1-5 was their best thirty minutes of the season. Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones. The pair were bright as buttons throughout, epitomised by the fourth and fifth goals.. Florian Wirtz was just as bright. His ability to find space is tremendous, touches here and there, clever movement and excellent passing. He found his hips and showed them and as we know, hips don't lie.Ekitike was outstanding again. The oddness of our current reality is that Alexander Isak and Mo Salah are finding it hard. Ekitike isn't. Cody Gakpo is finding bits hard but ends tonight with a goal and an assist. Federico Chiesa wants a fight. Wants to scrap for every yard and in the second-half he is the absolute business. As part of that, attacking some corners with aplomb is no bad thing and both centre-halves do their share - MILAN AWAY LAST YEAR. As part of that, exploiting an opposition weakness is no bad thing. As part of that, picking teams which make it easier for the footballers is no bad thing and has just happened for what feels like the first time in a while.Liverpool aren't a perfect outfit but that doesn't preclude any achievement yet. Tonight they looked like a team and that is a step forward. NOTE the ball in play time and the absence of a prick of a referee….. None of this means anything is permanently fixed, but permanently fixed is a teeny bit overrated. The issue with contemporary football is the speed of change. In the autumn of 2024 Paris St Germain looked like a skewed joke. By March they looked irresistible. Nothing stays precisely in position for any length of time and you are constantly having to work things out.Tonight was like taking off tight shoes. It made the world easier, the Swiss System easier, your brain easier. The brain is the main thing. We should want the pressure; just not yet. Today helps.Part Three - from the United game:Liverpool have now contested a staggering 256 aerial duels in just eight league games; which equals 32 per game. The Man United game involved 34. Last season the average in Liverpool games was just 20.3 per match. The increase per game from last season means a staggering 58% more aerial duels, which is almost another sport. At the current rate, Liverpool will contest 500 extra aerial duels this season than in 2024/25. Liverpool are still top for aerial duels won at – a massive 58.2% – which is elite for a team. The Reds are great in the air, full stop. But the sheer number being slung at the Reds means over 100 of the 256 have been lost; that's why long-ball teams play the numbers game (you can't win them all, but the ones you win can lead to goals in the chaos). FootnoteLiverpool also created as much xG (2.8) in 2023 when Cody Gakpo scored two in a 7-0 win as when the Reds scored just one yesterday, when Gakpo scored, missed a big chance, and hit the post three times (two with superb shots).‘Get Saturday boxed and go from there. I love taking off tight shoes. You always need to be prepared to put them back on because you wear tight shoes because they are the good ones.'If you enjoyed the pod, please share it with a friend.
