Listen on to find out about five pillars of resilience from our guest's book Raise Your Resiliency. Today's guest is Kris Coleman. Kris has served with the CIA conducting threat and vulnerability assessments and for the FBI as a special agent. He planned on writing a book about security, but Covid changed his direction. [25:56] - The three units that need to survive and thrive are the individual, the family, and the business. [26:31] - The Five Pillars of Resilience are: awareness, mindset, fitness, skills, and relationship. [27:54] - Regarding mindset, when it comes to resilience, you need to have a positive, growth, and survival mindset. [28:53] - Kris gives examples of a catastrophic mindset that many people had during the pandemic. Mindset and awareness are a choice. [29:24] - Fitness applies to physical, mental, and emotional strength in the three units (individual, family, and business). [30:14] - Kris lists many skills that a lot of people are not ready for, specifically now after a year of being stuck at home. [31:13] - The fifth pillar is relationships. This applies to your neighbors and community and not just your immediate family. [34:37] - In a lot of cases, things can be problematic for people in just a couple of hours due to lack of planning and preparedness. [37:40] - Things may sometimes feel redundant when preparing for anything. [38:33] - Your geographical location makes a difference in the type of things you need to prepare for. Take a risk assessment of your environment. [40:23] - Make the situation work for you when preparing for different events. Look at the likelihood of things to prepare for. [41:25] - Kris shares how the risk of civil unrest is higher in certain parts of the country over others. During this episode of the Lab Coat Agents Podcast, host Jeff Pfitzer speaks with Kris Reid all the way from Vietnam. Kris has a background in building online computer games and figured out how to use SEO to bring visitors to his site at an elevated level. Now, Kris helps people understand the power of SEO and how it makes life easy! Episode Highlights: Now more than ever, it’s incredibly important to have a digital presence and an effective website. It’s important to keep a cup-half-full mentality in the wake of the global pandemic. Originally from Brisbon, Australia, Kris has a background in software engineering. After the financial crisis of 2008, Kris decided to build an online game which forced him to learn the ins and outs of SEO. Most businesses and entrepreneurs fail for the simple fact that they don’t bring in enough revenue. Many of the realtors that Kris speaks to leave themselves defenseless by spending their entire marketing budget on Zillow. Eventually, you can use SEO to hone your website down to your specific niche in the market. Through keyword research, Kris and his team help their clients find what people are looking for in their area. In general, content is important, but studies show that over 90% of content on Google gets zero traffic. Realtors can only handle so many leads without hiring more staff, so you must know what success looks like to you every year. Digital marketing kicks the hell out of TV advertising and the best part is that it’s easy to track the numbers. Many times, Kris gets blank stares from the clients that he explains SEO to because they aren’t very technical. Kris and his team help their clients figure out the avatar of their ideal customer and get in the heads of those people. When Kris begins working with a client, he has to be able to explain SEO to a certain point in order to build trust. Cost-per-click posts are the ads on top of a Google search which costs the owner to put there, though they get less than 7% of the clicks. The difference between the 1st-ranked site on Google and the 10th-ranked site is 10x the amount of traffic. Really long key phrases are usually linked to people who know more about what they are looking for. The more specific you can be with your keywords, the smaller the search volume will become, but the higher the percentage of converted leads. People are forced to trust what everyone else is saying about you on Google, so domain authority plays a massive role in your ranking. Establishing a solid domain authority, the amount of backlinks that lead to your page comes down to keyword research. Everyone wants this sexy, aesthetic website, but bringing in traffic is the most important aspect. Your page needs to punch people in the face and tell the visitor exactly what you do on the landing page. Don’t kill a lead by trying to sell on the first connection, provide value and show people that you can help them. The biggest mistake that people make on social media is that they treat it like a website. Make it clear to Google what pages are linked to what keyword so that the pages don’t cannibalize each other. Go to Kris’s website below and Kris will evaluate your website for free! Kris has worked very closely with his team leaders to establish the company goals and what they need to achieve them. 3 Key Points: The power of SEO lies in the fact that it is compounding. Rather than blow your entire marketing budget on Zillow, put half into your website and your leads will eventually skyrocket. Studies show that over 90% of content that can be found on Google gets zero traffic. While content is important, leading people to that content trumps all. The longer the key phrase, the smaller the volume of leads that will come in. At the same time, those leads know more about what they are looking for, so a higher percentage will be converted to sales. As you all know, the news of KUWTK ending broke Tuesday night, and it wouldn’t have felt right to not address that. Kris TenHarmsel was a Samurai warrior in a previous life. In this life, however, he's a 43-year-old character about whom words simply can't cover the full scope of his soul. The first of a two-part interview, today's episode explores the love story between Kris and his wife, Natalie, who are still in love today, but that doesn't mean there's been any lack of chaos. When Kris broke bad (legally) to make ends meet, he began down a path that leads us to the end of today's episode, with the conclusion coming down the pike next Friday. In this episode, I’ll have a conversation with Kris Miles, the co-owner of the Winston Ale House and The Winston Brewery, both in North Hobart, Tasmania. When Kris and his wife Caroline’s local pub went up for sale, they couldn’t pass on the opportunity to snap it up. After working in hospitality for many years, the desire to open their own venue could no longer be ignored. Combining Caroline’s yearning for American comfort food with Kris’ vision to open a brewery, the duo embarked on their first venue. They found a name in Winston, their beloved pet dog whose friendly and sociable nature set the tone for what they wanted the venue to become. The couple purchased the spot and transformed it into an art-deco space, imbuing it with a warm and casual atmosphere. They started by opening the Eatery, offering a fantastic American menu and 12 rotating taps. In 2016 they expanded the offering with the addition of the Winston Brewing Company, allowing Kris to indulge his wildest beer-related fantasies and serve brews that can’t be found elsewhere. At the brewery, Kris experiments with hoppy styles, using Tasmanian hops and barrel-aging techniques. In 2020, they are opening a dry food and craft bottle shop to their very busy bar and moving the brewery within a few hundred meters with a taproom. With around 13 full-time team members they grew around 20% each year, and sales have been growing steadily in recent years. They have funded the business solely from savings and putting profits back into the business. The bar is always busy and a testament to how one can turn around a dead venue with nothing but a good vision, great team, training, and offering something different to the market. Tune in to hear how sticking to your model, being open and honest about what you want to do and offer the market, and not overthinking things can help you grow your business. This Cast Covers: How Kris and his wife took the plunge to stop working for other people and start the Alehouse and brewery. Their North American inspired foods and craft beers from all over the world. Working in the business as a couple and how that helps them in separating their personal and business lives. Sustaining a 20% growth rate by working a lot of hours to keep the wage cost down and have money to keep reinvesting. The foolproof bootstrapping strategy that enabled them to avoid debt and external funding. How opening the brewery became the most stressful point in his small business growth journey. Enabling the employees to feel invested in the business by educating them and taking them on craft brewery tours. The unpredictability of managing the growth of the business and how difficult it was to plan for it. Getting better at managing their money and being more financially organized. The number one habit Kris thinks a small business owner should develop and maintain. How they added people to their team and the lessons they learned. Discouraging toxicity among employees to build a great culture. Investing in professional development by learning something new every day. The detriment of overthinking things to the growth of a small business. The power of having a good accountant and the long term value it offers in terms of business growth. Back in action this week with another story from the rock-n-roll archives of my resin coated brain. I wish we would've gotten those french fries though.
In today’s episode, Digital Marketing Expert and real-life Rocket Scientist Bruce Spurr joins Kris for a talk on how to win the digital marketing game using Facebook ads, Google Maps, and Google Search. They touch upon how to get your school to stand out, even above the “big boys” of advertising, ways to leverage your ad no matter how small your budget, what consists of a great ad, and how to use digital marketing to keep your enrollment high or fill the empty spaces. He and Kris reminisce of the olden days before social media, and ways that they have learned to adapt and work together in the current landscape to help child care owners overcome their challenges in the field. Strap in, and get ready to launch into the digital marketing stratosphere! Key Takeaways: [4:22] Special announcement! The Child Care Success Summit announces their celebrity speaker, Les Brown. Les is one of the world’s top motivational speakers, and he himself has a tie in the child care market, so this is one experience not to miss. They are almost at 80% full, so be sure to get the tickets while they last, using promo code: ROCKSTAR to get a $100 discount off the full price. [7:31] Bruce and Kris met while at the Frank Kern Mastermind Group. [8:52] Fun Fact: Bruce has some Lebanese ties in his family, and traveling with his wife is one of his favorite parts of the way he has set up his life. He calls into today’s episode from Beirut, Lebanon and gives us an update on the current political climate and perspective there. [10:52] Bruce shares how he went from a physical labor job as a construction worker, to entrepreneur building e-commerce sites, then marketing and advertising. He has a Degree in Physics and Engineering and is a rocket scientist by education. [11:40] He was at the Web 2.0 Conference when Twitter was launched, and one of the first thousand people to open up a Twitter account. [15:42] All the owners Bruce has had the chance to meet are kind and loving people, driven by a purpose to help. They are in it for the passion of making a difference in the lives of children and leaving a legacy, but often are run by their business, instead of running their business. When Kris and Bruce work with the owner together, they win the battle of hiring in a tight labor market and the battle of filling up the school in a competitive community. [21:54] Bruce explains why people need to do Facebook ads, and how it’s important for people both just indirectly scrolling and also searching in a focused manner for child care centers geographically close to them. [25:54] SEO used to be about getting listed on a page, now it’s about getting listed in Places and Maps. Google is smart and figured out the search algorithm on a specific school in general, and organic articles and information on how to pick a school in general. It is a huge game changer and Kris and Bruce have even seen people triple their results once they get the Google Maps piece of the puzzle figured out. [30:00] When Bruce works with clients to determine the lifetime value of the customer, it is clear spending the initial marketing money to attract them is a drop in the bucket to secure them long-term. [33:40] The “Insights” tab on Facebook is a magical place, where you can look for your most popular posts, what gets the highest engagement (aka hunting for unicorns) and what gets the normal or not so big response (the donkey). Bruce explains how to drill down to hit your target market in a Boosted Post and why you may want to use Targeted Ads for an even more specific reach. [38:28] Even just $5-$10 can be a great budget to start Boosting and Re-Boosting your post. When something works, keep doing the same. [40:41] Bruce explains the difference between the two different types of ads. For an ad that is simple and straightforward with an offer or incentive for enrollment, they call it a “tuition credit” instead of a discount. [47:59] The biggest challenge Bruce has had is focusing on one thing and not getting too distracted by opportunity. [53:59] Your school’s success depends on getting yourself in the digital marketing game. It is a fun journey to play around and see what part of it you like best, whether it’s creating videos, managing the back end of ads or posting photos and captions. [56:05] Invest in some tools such as a selfie stick and mic to enhance the quality of your videos and audio. When Kris Storm, the new manager of an elite cybersecurity team at Illuminate, a global internet powerhouse, receives an order to sift through web traffic to further the presidential ambitions of the mayor of New York, she stomps out the door in protest. But her staunch belief in the protection of an individual's right to privacy is tested when her boss abruptly shuts down the project a few weeks later. By then, a disturbing trail of terrorist activity, albeit circumstantial, has emerged: Brighton Beach, Russian jingoism, freedom fighters, liquid explosives, jihad, Boston Marathon. Now, Kris must decide whether to dig deeper, or stay constitutionally safe on the sidelines. Her hesitancy, however, costs valuable time. When Kris and her partner, street savvy FBI agent Jim Bright, finally identify the bombers and their target, Yankee Stadium, they must race to the Bronx. Will they arrive in time to prevent the carnage? Who is really behind the plot? Angry and now brimming with patriotic fervor, Kris plunges undercover as a hacker among the bright lights and party beaches of the Adriatic Sea to smoke out a global gang of cybercriminals. From Edward Snowden’s revelations about our own government’s surveillance activities to the financial data breaches perpetrated by Russian hackers to the European Union’s sanctions against Google, cybersecurity arouses passionate controversy worldwide. The Fourth Amendment combines a multidimensional view of the issues with a compelling cast of characters to create a rollicking, contemporary thriller.
Kris Olson went to Waco, Texas public schools as a child. It was quite natural when her first child entered kindergarten to show up at the school and ask to pitch in. When Kris saw that a large number of her contemporaries were choosing to send their children to private schools or moving to the suburbs, she and some other parents decided to act, leading to the formation of Parents For Public Schools, Waco. This action changed the Waco public schools and the parent involvement there forever. PPS- Waco the Genesis.
When Kris is late showing up for the show, Kevin McShane steps in to help David out. The upbeat pair wackily discuss doorknobs, gas ovens, and the Internet!
