Episode #998 Today we preview a few exciting upcoming shows in Winnipeg as well as this year's outstanding Calgary Folk Festival lineup. (upcoming local events: https://tellthebandtogohome.com/upcoming-events/, Calgary Folk Festival: https://www.calgaryfolkfest.com/ In 2016, I put together a show full of love songs for some dear friends who were getting married. This time, it's my turn! It's been a whirlwind of change and joy since the big Tell the Band to Go Home 20th anniversary show at The Park Theatre in October, which is where I was re-introduced to someone who was very significant in my younger life, but I hadn't really seen in 23 years, Nicole Robson. On Tuesday, it'll be the 25th anniversary of our first wedding, which happened on July 25, 1998, and we're going to celebrate by doing it all over again, but promise to do it right this time! The love and joy and hope that I once wished on others, but secretly thought wasn't possible for me, has now arrived, and the future looks very bright! My friend Dietmar may claim to be the luckiest man alive, but I'm making a run for the title. The songs in this show help express some of the immense luck and satisfaction that I'm feeling these days. playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-f7V
Karen King loves the modern quilt aesthetic and has a particular fondness for foundation paper piecing. She has had quilts juried into Quilt Con 2022 and 2023, the largest annual show of modern quilts in the world. Her studio has grown to include a long arm machine and two resident feline supervisors, plus occasional foster kittens. Just for fun, Karen's favorite color is all of them, but she admits to a smaller stash of yellow, which I couldn't believe when I read that because my favorite colour is yellow. But cooking and music, especially from the band U2, and travel everywhere, especially if U2 is playing there, are also a big part of her life. Beyond quilting, Karen enjoys sharing her knowledge and expertise with a number of different organizations on a volunteer basis. Currently she serves on the board of the Modern Quilt Guild, the Calgary Folk Festival, and the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew.Visiting Calgary for the Festival of Quilts at Heritage Park? I did my first interview with Dan Mangan years ago on a hot and dusty day at the Calgary Folk Festival. Had never met him or heard him perform. He was one of half a dozen interviews I was scheduled to do. I started with the lame opening of… Please tell our at-home audience your real name. “I'm Dan. Dan MAN-GAN” I was hooked. My kind of guy. Many years later, The Dusty Dan of the folk festival has become a winner of 2 Juno Awards. Each tour has gathered more and more fans around the World. EP's, albums, tours, festivals, film scoring, co-creating Side Door Access, and full-on family guy. Now comes the latest project! A beautifully crafted concert documentary by Amazing Factory called All Together Now, recorded at his homecoming concert in 2019 at the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver. It's unlike any other concert film you might have seen. There's a sense of truth, honesty, and clarity in every song. Pure MAN-GAN. And best of all I still see “the guy” behind the songs. Dusty Dan. https://danmanganmusic.com/

Kris Kristofferson has retired. What a road he walked in his lifetime. Hung around Johnny Cash’s studio as the janitor and pitched him multiple songs ((he talks about it here) Helped to start the songwriting trend in Nashville that brought respectability to Country Music (he talks about it here) Joined Waylon, Willie, and Johnny to form The Highwaymen. Leaves behind a really good film career. From A Star is Born to Blade.( (he talks about it here) Awarded a Rhodes’ Scholarship. Was a helicopter pilot in the Army. ((he talks about it here) When Kris left the Army to be a songwriter he was disowned by his family. He leaves behind a wonderful rainbow of songs and memories of Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, Shooter Jennings, the Cash film I walk the Line, John Prine, Dylan. All of which he talks about here. This interview took place backstage at the 2006 Calgary Folk Festival. It was a quickly arranged media press conference and the only other person I knew was Tom Coxworth from CKUA. I tried to include as many questions as I could hear on my recorder. His greatest accomplishment? Being a Father to 8 children. Kris has asked that he would like the first three lines of Leonard Cohen’s Bird on a Wire to be on his tombstone Like a bird on the wire Like a drunk in a midnight choir I have tried in my way to be free Cheers to KK.
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Bernard Fitzgerald over Zoom video! Michael Bernard Fitzgerald is a Canadian singer/songwriter who has collected an audience of fans across North America drawn to simple honest words and a genuine smile. Having released 4 full-length albums to date, Fitzgerald has spent his career since 2006 creating music, touring, developing as a songwriter, and connecting with audiences. Fitzgerald’s unique and innovative ideas coupled with his inherent warmth allow him to engage with people in a way that always leaves them meaningfully connected. After over a decade of working with labels, creating songs with top-tier L.A. songwriters and producers including Jon Levine (Drake, Dua Lipa), Brian West (Maroon 5, K’naan), and Dennis Herring (Ra Ra Riot, Modest Mouse) on About You, and spending some time in the charts with “I Wanna Make it With You” (2016) and “One Love” (2016), Fitzgerald has finally found himself and a calm, rooted, unfeigned sound at home. A career of touring across Canada and around the world sharing the stage with artists like Bryan Adams, Ben Harper, Dan Mangan, Sam Roberts, Joel Plaskett, and Kings of Leon has brought Michael back to his hometown, Calgary Alberta, to create his newest record Love Valley. If it was in a small club or larger theatre like the Vogue in Vancouver, the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto, Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, or on the big stages at a festivals like Calgary Folk Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Firefly Festival or Mountain Jam (to name a few) the spirit of honest connection with people has always existed in Fitzgerald’s performances.Today, he knows the value of time spent living in the moment and continues to go forward fostering the experience of connecting one song, one room, one fan at a time. Reuben and the Dark have underwent a couple of line-up changes since, but they haven’t let that stopped them from working on new material. In fact, on this week’s TransCanada Music West, you’ll hear some brand new – unreleased tunes.

We're pre-recorded this week, as all good-hearted local music lovers are at the Winnipeg Folk Festival! KK, Mudge, and T-Bar have had many great experiences at the Winnipeg Festival (as well as festivals in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario!), and this seemed like as good a time as any to look back at some of those magical moments that have inspired us over the years. Mudge takes a musical walk through time, listening to some Folk Fest faves and telling some stories that stand out. This is a real fun show for me, and one that I hope you'll enjoy listening to almost as much as I enjoyed making it! (Part 2 airs on Tell the Band to Go Home!)
