The Seattle Sounders 2016 MLS ‘worst-to-first’ run was as thrilling as it was improbable. When they lifted the Cup last December, their achievement represented a major success for a community fostering soccer culture within the city for more than 40 years. Few are more familiar with the development of the Seattle soccer scene than former Seattle mayor Greg Nickels. Both a fan in their NASL days and a key player in bringing MLS to the Emerald City decades later, Nickels joined Steven Agen—lead author of Resurgence: How Sounders FC Roared Back to Win MLS Cup—for a discussion on Sounders’ impact on Seattle and the construction of CenturyLink Field. Together they reflected on the club’s 2016 title-winning campaign, reviewing reports from key figures within the Seattle sports journalism world including Art Thiel, Matt Pentz, Ari Liljenwall, Andrew Harvey, “Mr. Sounder” Zach Scott, and Nickels himself. Nickels and Agen examined the former Mayor’s individual efforts to bring a soccer-ready stadium to Seattle as well as what their recent title means to the city. Recorded live at Phinney Center by Town Hall Seattle Tuesday, November 28, 2017.
Another unbeaten weekend in Cascadia leaves two of our clubs firmly in playoff positions and the third just on the edge looking in. Prost Portland editor Matt Hoffman discusses the reasons why Timbers aren't getting the national respect they deserve yet. That's followed by a preview of their match in Toronto, where a result would certainly send a message to anyone sleeping on Portland. It's tough to tell whether it's two point dropped or a point gained as Carl Robinson continues to tinker with his ideal front four. Michael McColl of AFTN joins and give his takes on current playoff hopes, consistency, and the coming road match against New England. Who'll make the starting lineup for the Whitecaps, and will they do enough to keep pace with the Earthquakes for the last playoff spot in the West? The group closes out Ep. 120 by analyzing Sounders' 7-match unbeaten run. Were they firing on all cylinders in Minnesota? Derlis Gonzalez isn't coming to Seattle, but that doesn't mean we don't have interesting questions to ponder as the transfer window closes. Where does Victor Rodriguez fit into this team, given Will Bruin's form? How about Lamar Neagle, for that matter? It's another packed episode of Radio Cascadia -- tune in to hear takes on the biggest stories in the region from the likes of Michael McColl, Matt Hoffman, Ari Liljenwall, and Andrew Harvey. Speaking of Ari and Andrew, they joined Steven Agen in writing Resurgence: How Sounders FC Roared Back to Win MLS Cup, presale available now here. Former Seattle mayor Greg Nickels, ESPNFC.com & Prost Amerika writer Matt Pentz and Seattle sports journalism legend Art Thiel all feature as well in Prost Publishing's effort to commemorate Sounders' 2016 title-winning season. PLAYLIST: 00:00 - Cascadia goal/player of the week, MLS team of the week 07:10 - Timbers triumph over LA, VAR debut, and TFC away ft. Matt Hoffman 31:10 - Points dropped or gained? + Playoff hopes and a trip back east ft. Michael McColl 48:40 - Sounders hunt down Loons, unbeaten in 7 + Neagle/Rodriguez discussion
Four points from two matches in Texas leaves us with plenty to celebrate as we speak with Michael McColl of AFTN and Prost Portland editor Matt Hoffman about their cliubs' successes down south. Whitecaps' 4-0 result in Frisco draws considerable attention and we rate it among their most memorable matches in MLS so far. Our preview of their match in Colorado focuses on the question of consistency, as another performance like the one against Dallas will surely earn points against the struggling Rapids. 2-2 was nothing to scoff at for Portland, but between an odd offside decision and a questionable call on a free kick leading to Houston's equalizer it's no wonder fans were left feeling it was two points dropped. Hoffman deliberates on all of the contentious moments before we move on and discuss Timbers' home match with LA this weekend. Sounders had their own match against LA a weekend ago, and we elaborate on why it was a match no one could afford to lose. Attention then shifts to an inaugural meeting with Minnesota United, a tie near and dear to Andrew's heart. Undefeated weeks are happy weeks on Radio Cascadia, enjoy this one with us! Andrew, Ari and Steven all feautured in Prost Publishing's latest book, Resgurgence: How Sounders FC Roared Back to Win MLS Cup. The book chronicles Seattle's title-winning season, and also includes contributions from former Seattle mayor Greg Nickels, Rapids play by play commentator and BBC veteran Richard Fleming, ESPNFC.com and Prost Amerika writer Matt Pentz, legendary Seattle journalist Art Thiel, and a foreword written by Mr. Sounder himself, Zach Scott. Special pre-sale price available through August 25th here.
Today on Radio Cascadia Live, your home for Seattle Sounders FC coverage on Sports Radio 950 KJR, Jackson Felts, Steven Agen, Ari Liljenwall and Andrew Harvey open the show talking about the United States' Gold Cup victory including Jordan Morris' winning goal then talk to Niko Moreno of Somos Sounders and El Rey 1360 about the transfer news of the week linking Derlis Gonzalez and Victor Rodriguez to Seattle. In the second segment, the guys chat with Sounders President of Soccer and General Manager Garth Lagerwey about the Gold Cup, Sigi Schmid taking over the Galaxy, Bob Bradley coaching Los Angeles' new MLS team, and his philosophy on athleticism. In the second half of the show, we hear from Schmid's introductory press conference in Los Angeles, Sounders Head Coach Brian Schmetzer on Schmid going back to L.A. and have a discussion about the change. In the final segment, the show breaks down and predicts Saturday's match against the Galaxy and promotes Prost Amerika's Sounders Championship book, "Resurgence", which you can buy at this link! > https://www.ecwid.com/store/prostpublishing/#!/Resurgence-How-Sounders-FC-Roared-Back-to-Win-MLS-Cup/p/85431662/category=0

Michael McColl of AFTN joins to try and make sense of Vancouver's weekend disappointment. How did the high-flying Whitecaps fall so flat against 15-man Portland? Our preview of their next match, an away game at FC Dallas, contributes to the title of this episode, with two of our clubs playing in Texas this weekend. Portland MLSsoccer.com beat writer and Prost editor Matt Hoffman chats with us about the other side of the derby. We praise Ebobisse's big performance and rate it amongst historical performances from other young Cascadians in derby matches. Our Texas Week coverage concludes with the group desperately begging Matt to assure everyone that Cascadia's futility in Houston will finally come to an end on Saturday.
