On this episode, we again praise the exploits of one Denis Bouanga, or Saint Denis, as he has come to be known around these parts. Just when we thought our old friend, Maxime Crepeau, did enough standing on his head to deliver his new club, the Portland Timbers, a point on the road, St. Denis delivered a stoppage-time miracle and three points to the Black and Gold. Welcome to Episode 298, the one where Diego Chara sets records and sees red. LAFC played perhaps their best half of the season to start the match against Portland, racing out to a 2-0 lead behind a goal from Timmy Tillman in first-half stoppage and a Portland own goal.  But soccer matches are two halves long, and LAFC couldn't have come out more flat. Cabecita cut the deficit in half before Santi Moreno leveled with less than 20 minutes remaining. But consecutive yellows from Diego Chara just 4 minutes apart saw the home side go up a man, and it was time for a stunner. In the second minute of stoppage, after another great Crepeau save, Denis rounded the corner of the left side of the box, got everything behind his boot, and fired past Crepeau for the 3-2 stoppage time. Also on this episode, we discuss LAFC Day, remember our first home match, and look forward to Levi's. Enjoy Episode 298!

The LA Derby never disappoints. Sure, the result might not always fall in our favor, but the excitement, the buildup, the anticipation, and the energy of the matchup with Carson is usually exceeded only by the football played on the pitch. It's very safe to say that, for Episode 275, this version of the derby definitely didn't disappoint. LAFC took the lead twice, first on a Bouanga banger from Chiqui, and then after Ryan Hollingshead poached a pass for Denis and turned it into a goal of his own. But just as many times as we took the lead, Carson would score soon after to bring it level. But just when we thought the match couldn't get any more intense, LAFC goes and totally redeems themselves. A Bouanga brace followed by Tillman's first in forever gave the home side a lead, a win, and all three points. Also on this episode, Olly meets a Heisman winner, Filly leaves the show for a few minutes, and Scarf is still waiting for his paper airplane show. Enjoy Episode 275 as we begin out final gauntlet of matches before MLS Cup Playoffs.

Abstract: Electrical stimulation is a powerful therapeutic tool for treating neurologic and neuropsychiatric disorders. Sensing and modulating electrophysiological biomarkers of memory over extended timescales is necessary for tracking and improving memory in humans. Here, we describe results from humans in their natural home environments using a novel, investigational system enabling chronic stimulation and multi-channel recording of anterior thalamic and hippocampal local field potentials during memory tasks. Four people with focal epilepsy performed a free recall verbal memory task repeatedly for up to fifty months on a touch-screen device with wireless signal acquisition with electrophysiology and behavioral data streaming to a cloud environment. Anterior thalamic-hippocampal spectral activities in the theta frequency range were found to correlate with memory processing, to predict task performance, and to be modulated by deep brain stimulation. Our results provide a new biomarker-based technology for chronic remote tracking of memory performance and modulation of the associated neural activities. Copy rights belong to original authors. LAFC has won MLS Cup! LAFC has won MLS Cup!!! After a match now considered the best final in MLS history, and the most intense emotional roller coaster in a 5-year history of intense emotional rollercoasters, LAFC has won MLS Cup!The matchup was #1 in the West, LAFC, against #1 in the East, the Philadelphia Union, for the first time in an MLS Final since 2003, and it lived up to every bit of the hype and billing. The two best teams produced an all-time great match, filled with improbable moments, incredible performances, and a storybook ending that Hollywood couldn't begin to script. Say it with us one more time: LAFC has won MLS Cup!LAFC drew first blood, as Kellyn Acosta bent a free kick off of midfielder Jack McGlynn's head and past Andre Blake for an early 1-0 lead. Philadelphia equalized just before the hour mark off a great feed from Jose Martinez to Daniel Gazdag, and the drama had just begun. LAFC looked to have won it off a bit of set magic in the 83rd minute. Carlos Vela found Jesus David Murillo with a beautiful corner kick, and LAFC looked to be on their way to glory! But just 2 minutes later, Jack Elliott found a header of his own off a set piece to level the match at 2 and send us into Extra Time.  Seven minutes into the first 15-minute period, Carlos Vela came off for Gareth Bale. Yes, Bale, the Welsh superstar who had played just 176 Black and Gold minutes since September, would be asked to replace the Captain. The first 15 minutes came and went without much fanfare, but, as Samuel L. Jackson said in Jurassic Park, "Hold on to your butts."After a horrific injury to Maxime Crepeau on a play that likely saved a sure Union goal and resulted in a straight red for Crepeau, the former Union product John McCarthy entered the match in the 117th minute of the MLS Cup Final. Because of the injury, we would see 9 full minutes of stoppage time. Four minutes in, McCarthy would make one fantastic save on Julian Carranza, but the ensuing rebound would be put home by Elliott for his second goal of the match, and one that surely looked to be a Cup winner.LAFC, Chiqui Palacios, and Gareth Bale had other ideas, however. After a 1-2 between Ilie and Chiqui, Palacios raced to the goal line, flicked a beautiful cross into the box towards a streaking Bale, who got perfect position on the 6'6" Elliott and headed it home for a 127th-minute equalizer!!! LAFC had found a way to get it to PK's! On paper, it looked to be David vs. Goliath, as McCarthy, the MLS journeyman, would take on the reigning MLS Keeper of the Year in Andre Blake. But the match is never played on paper; this is Latitude 36 Bermudagrass, and this is the Cathedral of the Black and Gold, Banc of California Stadium. After a miss by Glesnes, McCarthy stoned both Jose Martinez AND Kai Wagner, and with Ilie Sanchez's successful attempt, LAFC would win the shootout, 3-0, and take home our first MLS Cup. One more time, with feeling: LAFC has won MLS Cup!

Episode 210 is upon us, and before we talk about the match against the Quakes, we have an announcement! Defenders of the Banc is proud to announce the podcast's first official sponsor: FLEX Power Tools. Yes, FLEX, the very same front-of-kit sponsor of our beloved Black and Gold! A huge thank you to everyone in the FLEX family: Joe, Katie, Brady, Vince, Taylor, Shane, and everyone involved in making this dream a reality.Meanwhile in San Jose, the Black and Gold take an… interesting lineup into PayPal Park to take on the Quakes. While Max and the back line were relatively normal, the midfield trio of Mendez-Acosta-Blessing and seeing Ryan Hollingshead's name next to Chicho and Mahala on the front line left both Filly and Scarf saying “Wait… what?!” (It's back!)LAFC would go down early on a Benji Kikanovic goal, set up by the theme for the match, an attack from the right by San Jose. After a couple of near misses by Jeremy Ebobisse and Chicho Arango, we head to half down, but not out, 1-0. Surprisingly, no halftime changes were made, but that wouldn't stop LAFC from leveling the match. After some much-needed heroics by Crepeau, it was time for more Mahala magic! A cheeky chip of Marcinkowski in the 54' was all LAFC needed to grab a point back on the road. Or at least we thought. After subbing in Carlos Vela, Jose Cifuentes, Ilie Sanchez, and Gareth Bale, the momentum immediately swung our way, but double yellows on Ilie and Kellyn, coupled with the wunderkind, Cade Cowell, entering the match, spelled trouble for the Black and Gold. In the 77', Cade Cowell fired a one-timer with authority to put the home side on top for good and send PayPal Park into a frenzy. San Jose had just won their MLS Cup. Ilie Sanchez all but sealed the victory for SJ, picking up his second yellow in just 15 minutes, assuring he will miss the match in Austin, but a game LAFC squad wouldn't relent. The front line of Bale, Chicho, and Vela were clicking as LAFC had a few chances to pull one back, but it was too little, too late, and just like that, the win streak was over. This episode definitely meanders through the first few bits! Will Cifu, Mamadou Fall, and/or Brian Rodriguez be on their way out? Are more players coming in? Why is Filly calling out Tony Robbins (again)? Did we really just talk about the return of Shaft Brewer, Jr. to American soccer? And did the boys really get to bring back “Name That Perez”?! What an episode!

As we embark on the third century of episodes here at Defenders of the Banc, LAFC heads north of the border to take on Vancouver at BC Place, a stadium that has been more of a house of horrors for LAFC of late. Aren't Canadians supposed to be polite? This match would see LAFC start quite the interesting lineup. With Carson looming on the horizon, LAFC was... cautious. No Chiqui Palacios, Brian Rodriguez, or Carlos Vela, the latter two because of injury and the former because of the chance of picking up a yellow, which would force him to sit out the next match. Only 6 on the bench, because, in Coach Dolo's words, "Everyone who was healthy was there." A 3-5-2 lineup, a formation that hasn't brought much success to the Black and Gold of late. And of course, turf. Awful, awful turf. On the bright side, Latif and Mamadou were back in the starting lineup! LAFC was doing everything they could to get out healthy and ready to take on Carson in 6 days. The only thing they didn't take back home with them was a point.Let's be real: Neither side really created many chances of note. Latif banged one off the crossbar in the 12th minute for the best chance for either side in the first half. Aside from Lucas Cavallini doing all he could to get red-carded in the first half, that's pretty much it. The second half seemed to be much of the same story, until about the 80th minute, when Vancouver took it up a notch and forced LAFC to play defensively in a formation they didn't love to be in. Just before the 90-minute mark, it's Cubas slotting one home to the right of a diving Crepeau after LAFC biffed several attempts to clear, and just like that, it's more horror at BC Place. LAFC falls 1-0.Also on this episode, we really enjoy our time at King of Wings in Lawndale! Filly and Scarf talk spicy food and wearing MLS kits to NWSL matches. It might not have been the best result, but at least it's a fun episode of Defenders! See you at the Banc for the Derby!

Week 9 of the MLS season is upon us, and a familiar face pays a visit to the Banc. Tyler Miller, no longer the starter, and his Minnesota United FC join us for Sunday services at the Cathedral of the Black and Gold. As the Loons would soon find out, good things come to those who sub in late! LAFC win an exciting affair, 2-0, behind two more goals from substitutes and staunch back line play. Looking to continue the weekend-long party that ACFC kicked off on Friday, LAFC forced several tough saves from the former Forward Madison 'Mingo, Dayne St. Clair in the first half, but the best chance of the first 45' came from Finnish forward Robin Lod. Crepeau made his only save of the half (and the match), and we head to the locker 0-0. Just past the hour mark, Dolo called on his bench to provide the heroics, as he inserted Moose and Cifu into the drama for Latif and Mahala. Ten minutes later, Ryan Hollingshead came on, and the chess match was almost complete. In the 82nd minute, Hollingshead gets on the end of a cross and a deflection for his third of the season to put LAFC up one. In the 90th, Cifu clips the Loons' wings, as Chiqui receives an unreal pass from Pancho before finding his fellow countryman to put LAFC up, up, and away, 2-0. Also on this episode, Filly has the hiccups. And heartburn. And a little indigestion. But really, you could barely tell. The boys cross off a huge bucket list item as well as another 14+ hour day at the Banc, LAFC kicks off AAPI Heritage Month, and Kevin Baxter remains silent. We're just 10 episodes away from our second century, and we couldn't have gotten this close without all the support from the millions who are a part of Defenders Nation! Match 2 of the Steve Cherundolo era is upon us, and a familiar yet unfriendly foe comes knock, knock, knocking on Black and Gold Heaven's door, the Portland Timbers. The Pesky Pine Trees, as Filly likes to call them, have dominated LAFC as of late, with our last win against the Rose City coming in September of 2020. It was a star-studded affair at the Banc, with Owen Wilson, Weston McKennie, owner Will Farrell, B-Real, and even Head of Security Paul all in attendance. The 22,000 in attendance would be treated to a classic Portland/LAFC match. Franco Escobar came off with an injury in the 13th minute, and just 5 minutes later, Portland would find the back of the net first. Yimmi Chara's second bicycle kick in as many weeks put Portland on top and into their patented defensive shell. After the half, LAFC provided our first Wait, What? Moment of the regular season: Carlos Vela coming off after half-time with a potential small knock. It would take 80 full minutes for LAFC to answer, but now without some help from the visitors first: Portland's Claudio Bravo would pick up his second yellow card in the 62nd minute, and from then on, LAFC was on the front foot. Brian Rodriguez would find a streaking Mamadou Fall in the box after yet another successful run by Rayito up the left flank. Brian made the pass, Fall slotted home the equalizer, and, after Crepeau swatted away another Chara attempt, LAFC claws back a point at home.News and Notes tracks a player we loved to watch in the preseason while This Day In LAFC History says both happy birthday and so long to a former Defender of the Banc. Why are the boys waking up extra early for an away match? How is Scarf celebrating his birthday? And what will Filly program next on the new toys in studio? JT’s camp knows that the conversation is going on. Despite all the noise, he goes out and has a whale of a game. Talked about where we might see him traded to. He is the driver of the engine. If it’s a grand slam offer, how could you not do it. It’s got to make sense. There are a lot of things at play here. How do you trade JT now and still expect to win, as you’ve promised other players. Canucks will get calls on Schenn and Motte. Halak will also get some calls but Rick doesn’t think he will move. Talked about Ryan Johnson. Talked about how much time Covid takes within the organization. Talked about Travis Hamonic. Doesn’t know if he has been shopped around. Talked about how great mandarin oranges are. Our Canucks reporter and one half of the Rink Wide Podcast, Jeff Paterson joined us in his regular spot, on a non-game day. Talked about, who else, JT Miller. He certainly isn’t hurting his value on the trade front. It was a complete game for him and the hockey club. Equated the win to a past win in WAS. If your best players have an impact on the ice, pretty good chance you will come out on top. JPat answered the poll question. Could see JT having a few more seasons like he is having this one. Jeff asks what if all the other Canuck players were playing like they should. He has been consistent. If he can ever get the support than he could have a few years of this type of run. Talked about the potential of a trade. It’s not like they are giving him away. On the surface it would be a massive blow to the here and now. They will have to resign him at some point and that will be expensive. This would be a hockey trade. There isn’t a contender out there that wouldn’t have a problem getting his salary into their cap. It’s incredible value and a big part of this story. Talked about Horvat making his way back to the team. Expected to return after joining the team in CAL. Bruce will have options in goal with Demko and Halak back. Talked about defensive pairings with Poolman out. Paul Dolan, ex Canadian Mens National Team Goalkeeper joined Matt and Blake after a big win from the team in Honduras. Talked about Milan Borjan and the stamp that he has made in the program. Talked about his technique. Talked about Cavallini and his resurgence in the national program and hoping he comes into Caps camp looking for a bounce back. Talked about the loss of Max Crepeau. It was a shocker what transpired. Yes they got a million in GAM but it doesn’t come close to what they’ve lost with Crepeau. Likes Hasal. Rob Williams of the Daily Hive joined Matt and Blake to wrap up the week that was for social media in Canucks world. Talked about how a JT Miller trade would go over. A lot of it depends on what you get back. There is a lot of fans that realize that you need a bit of a retool. You know whatever team he goes to, he will be a star. Talked about how many Miller jerseys we see in Vancouver. Talked about reverse retro. Thinks a flying V with current colours would be a slam dunk. Vancouver sportscaster, Scott Rintoul joined for his regular Thursday hit. Talked about Rachel Doerrie. She is a very smart, young woman who has worked in the NHL before. Has done plenty of research in the game. She has worked on projects that quantify hockey IQ. Scotty thinks she disrupts the space, which some people will find uncomfortable. This is a diverse hire but doesn’t think it’s the last one. Checkmark for the organization. Thinks that one of the three AGM spots will be a female. It’s about time, we need more of this. PK woes are personal related. Even with new coach bump. Talked about EP40. Beyond the goals, he looks more dangerous. Talked about Boudreau comments on Höglander. Bruce likes to make jokes but he is a realist. Scotty doesn’t have an issue with Bruce’s description of Nils. Scotty says NH came flying out of the gate. Talked about who will start in goal for the Canucks vs the Panthers. Would love to see MDP but odds are that it is Spencer Martin. Talked about Crepeau leaving the Whitecaps. Likened it to Ousted leaving. It’s a stunning move for the organization at this time. Talked about his 49ers. Saw some problems with Dallas. Jack Fraser, JFresh Hockey, joined Matt and Jeff to talk about analytics. Talked about what most sticks out analytics wise this season. Still a very flawed team but there are much brighter spots under the hood than compared to the last few seasons. The team struggles to carry the puck into the offensive zone and create chances. Thinks that was very intentional by Travis Green. When you have a team that struggles to create shots of the rush, you will be in trouble. 4th in shots off the cycle. 31st in zone entries, leading to a chance. Talked about league interest for JT Miller. Without a doubt he would fill a lot of boxes for a lot of team. He has a good track record of production. There are warts that can be pointed out in his game. The extra year will make it more desirable. Miller fits the category of Rutherford wanting to make a big change. Talked about Elias Pettersson. This has been a season with a little bit of turmoil for the Canucks. We all know the player he is and it’s a little too early to ring the panic button. Second half of the season will be finding a rhythm and getting into more dangerous spots around the ice. Talked about Rachel Doerrie. She has a strong hockey background. She is trying to find new ways to quantify the game. Has very little doubt that the Canucks will not regret the hire.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is a diverse hire but doesn't think it's the last one. Checkmark for the organization. Thinks that one of the three AGM spots will be a female. It's about time, we need more of this. PK woes are personal related. Even with new coach bump. Talked about EP40. Beyond the goals, he looks more dangerous. Talked about Boudreau comments on Höglander. Bruce likes to make jokes but he is a realist. Scotty doesn't have an issue with Bruce's description of Nils. Scotty says NH came flying out of the gate. Talked about who will start in goal for the Canucks vs the Panthers. Would love to see MDP but odds are that it is Spencer Martin. Talked about Crepeau leaving the Whitecaps. Likened it to Ousted leaving. It's a stunning move for the organization at this time. Talked about his 49ers. Saw some problems with Dallas. Jack Fraser, JFresh Hockey, joined Matt and Jeff to talk about analytics. Talked about what most sticks out analytics wise this season. Said how much he liked getting on a plane and flying out of EDM rather than having to stay for there for the bubble. Talked about the start to the season for the team. Everyone tries to get off to a good start to the season and feels that the team has played well enough to win. Talked about the identity of the team. They are embracing the identity of being a hard working, ugly team that others hate to play against them. Talked about “The Herd Line”. References back to the identity of the team and they set the pace and the mentality for the team. Talked about Colton Scissons and the kind of player he is. Ryan wasn’t surprised that Fabbro is bringing 100 people. Says he is Italian and that’s how they roll. A lot of great people in that family. Being back and seeing the rain makes it feel just like home after a year and a half. Talked about how much he is looking forward to Seattle. Rick Dhaliwal joined Matt and Blake and started off by being complimentary of the studio. Than he explained why he wasn’t at the launch for it. Compared our chairs with the chairs on their set. Talked about Podkolzin. Wonders if Brock Boeser is hurt. Referenced a video that he didn’t look to happy in. It’s his contract year. The Canucks could potentially have 5 guys on the US Olympic Team. Was told Boeser was almost a lock. Garland stock has gone way up. Was told the Americans are very impressed with him. If BB is going to make it, he needs to score goals. Has to be a top 6 goal-scoring winger for that team. Demko and Hughes are for sure. Talked about Hamonic and when he could be able to cross the border. Talked about GMJB telling the media to get lost on the Hamonic subject. Talked about Klimovich. He is going to be living with Silovs. Vancouver Whitecaps and Canada’s Mens National Team goalkeeper joined Matt and Blake to chat about the big matchup vs Seattle this weekend. Says these are the games that you want to play. Talked about his routine going into a big game. Says this is the biggest club game he will play in. Everyone needs to show up and be the best player they can be. This can be big for the city to reconnect with the fans. Talked about the streak they have been on. JJ Adams, Whitecaps FC Reporter for Post Media joined Matt and Blake after the team drew 1-1 at LAFC. Talked about the result. Since they currently sit in a playoff spot, everyone else they are in contention with could lose and they would make it. The last home game they played was vs SJ and they had Jungwirth as their CB. JJ says that the Caps scoring so early could have thrown them off. It was all LAFC after that. Reminded him of the last time they played each other back in August. They wouldn’t have come away with any points in either of the games if it weren’t for Crepeau. Brian White is unreal, says JJ. Talked about how the season turned around so dramatically. You can’t understate the impact of Ryan Gauld. He drives the play in the final third. They had the bones of a good team before him and it’s all coming together. What they’ve done under Vanni is far more entertaining. You can see the identity that they wanted before. They aren’t being hemmed into their own box under siege. They’ve turned the corner and full credit to Vanni and Gauld. Talked about Seattle. They are very daunting at full strength. It should be a really outstanding game between two teams who have a lot to play for. Talked about the team’s troubles off the pitch. October 19th is the first time Shuster was made aware of the allegations against Busby. Says you would have thought that the team would have made him aware of that. They did not… That would really upset him. **We are coming to a time of reckoning and change.** The league is not too impressed with this team. Talks about the other similar allegations that the club has clearly not learned from. Darren Dreger of the Ray and Dregs Podcast joined Matt and Blake and started off by chatting about the Eichel trade speculation. Dregs says to be careful about what you hear. The reaction he has received following up on it isn’t very positive. Sooner than later the Sabres need to find a deal. Talked about outside pressure. Knows that Daly has been actively involved in this but doesn’t think he is applying any pressure. Says that the NHLPA is thinking of filing a grievance. Nobody wants to go down that path. Wonders what the teams involved are thinking while the decision lingers after fair offers have been made. Thinks that it’s a collective pressure to get a deal done. Talked about Kevin Weekes report. Says it’s hard to comment on it. You don’t want to establish that that is the deal. Talked about his thoughts on the Bettman presser. Felt like it was cold. Very legally. You saw two decorated lawyers on full display. Was disappointing to see the way they skirted Westhead. Can appreciate the legal talk but it felt like there was a coldness about that that we didn’t get from WPG brass. Talked about Chipman and his sincerity. Talked about the PIT scandal. Says that this isn’t new for the NHL. Talked about the future of Gary and if he could be out of a job. Believes that he still has the vast majority of support from his owners. There is no question that they have questions about what has been going on. They just want to make sure they can ask the questions they can ask. Doesn’t think he is in a pile of heat here. Matt and Blake were pleased to welcome fellow Go Goat Sports family member, Darren Dreger to the show. Dregs started off by talking about how the landscape of the business has changed and why he is excited to join us on a weekly basis, every Wednesday. Pivoting from that, he talked about what he has heard on the Travis Hamonic file. Isn’t sure at this point if he will get over what he is dealing with. Doesn’t know the situation with Sutter. Talked about the job that the PA has done convincing players to get vaccinated. Not leaning one way or another with Hamonic. Doesn’t know enough about what he has been told. It’s such a difficult and delicate situation. Talked about Pettersson and Hughes and the ramifications within the organization or even league wide. It was an interesting reaction around the league and Dregs thinks that the Canucks did well with the deals. Some GM’s were surprised that both players didn’t come in on a bridge. Though, everyone thinks this was pretty fair all along. Talked about Brady Tkachuk. Dregs weighed into Evander Kane and the allegations that keep piling up, including the latest with falsifying a vaccination test. Says that nobody in the NHL or the Sharks want to touch this with a 10 foot pole. Says he just can’t stay out of the mud. Talked about Jack Eichel and the latest in his saga. Feels that the situation is moving. Timing is no one’s friend here. Whoever ends up with him is probably going to lose this year’s service. There have been many grenades that the PA has had to dodge over the last year. Hasn’t heard anything recently that the PA should be on alert to replace Don Fehr. Paul Dolan, TSN Whitecaps Colour Commentator joined the show to help set up a big World Cup Qualifying window for Canada’s Mens National Team. Started off by talking about Max Crepeau and the opportunity he has in front of him to start for Canada. The team is in good position as there is no pressure there. He has already been here before, in the gold cup. It’s the perfect storm for him to show up and do well. Dolie thinks he will be call upon in the game quite a bit. If Max can get a good run of games, you could see a change moving forward. Talked about the Canadian efforts vs Mexico in the Gold Cup. They probably should have win, and that was without Davies. Paul went down memory lane to talk about some of the results that were positive, even if it was a loss. Shifted to the Whitecaps and what they are up against vs Seattle this weekend. Paul likes what he has seen from this team with Vanni at the helm. The manager doesn’t feel like they are missing anything with Crepeau out of the lineup. Our Canucks reporter, Jeff Paterson joined in his regular spot and started off by talking about what he saw from Podkolzin last night. Says 2nd period was easily his best of period of the season, not that it was a high bar. Talked about some of the guys who are auditioning that aren’t getting the job done. Talked about where they like Chiasson. Needs a contract first but there is a nice little nugget with him as a PP1 guy. JPat said it was nice to see EP40 ripping one-timers at the net, despite catching Demko up high. Ian Clark went over to have a word with him about keeping it low. Talked about Nic Petan. He has a willingness to do whatever it takes to stay in the NHL. He isn’t the same player he broke into the NHL with. Talked about players the team moved on from today.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Ventures, my guests Steve Crepeau (https://www.truesalesresults.com/), Sol Cates (https://www.linkedin.com/in/sol-cates-649736/), and I discuss the nuances of sales, including characteristics, values, tactics, and techniques for helping people progress along the buyer's journey. Our discussion expands from complex B2B sales to how the “inflection point” concept can be applied to other areas of startups and enterprise sales, including “selling” your team and investors on your idea as a startup founder.  Visit https://satchel.works/@wclittle/ventures-episode-36 for detailed notes and links to resources (videos, articles, etc…) mentioned. You can watch this episode via video here. In this episode we cover the following:  1:01 - Sol tee-up and introduction of Steve2:40 - Steve introduction, background, and story of True Sales Results.5:23 - Sol's reflections of meeting Steve and learning about sales leadership.6:35 - Did Steve always have the personality of a salesperson even in his childhood? 9:10 - Backing up, what is sales? What kind of characteristics do you need to be good at sales?15:27 - Business to Business (B2B) buyers are interested primarily in purchasing business outcomes. (Sol talking about his past as a Sales Engineer). 17:36 - Deep dive discovery and discernment process as part of True Sales Results services, including talking to customers of customers.21:30 - For a growing startup, from an education perspective, how do you build and scale a sales team?27:17 - Not as simple as having someone in your network shadow you...it requires building story narratives and the types of things that True Sales Results provides for their clients. (hint: not “rolodex selling”)32:55 - Sol reflecting on early bootcamps with Steve, learning functional sales techniques, including understanding “the inflection point” during the buyer's journey. 35:42 - Steve reflecting on Sol's video testimonial in a busy conference hall36:24 - During the discovery process with Steve's customer's customers, Steve uncovers the emotion during the decision making process. The emotional impact. Sales people are good at making people feel very uncomfortable. Example question to ask: “What is the cost of doing nothing” ? 38:00 - More discussion around “the inflection point”. 40:40 - Making a buyer “troubled” to get to the inflection point. Examples from cybersecurity. 42:37 - Sol recalling a story that Steve shared in the past around buying a car...about a customer coming to the inflection point.45:40 - Other examples outside of Cybersecurity. (e.g. AI/Medtech). The inflection point is literally life or death for some buyers (such as hospitals). 55:02 - Remapping sales stages. Thinking you know why your customers buy your stuff (and being wrong).57:01 - What can founders learn from the insights from this episode regarding “selling” their team, investors, partners, etc… (including themselves). 59:31 - Avoid random acts of selling. Focus. Lessons learned. Sol recommends focusing on the problem, understanding it from multiple angles...and then, understanding if it's valuable to make the problem go away…..then innovate. 1:01:29 - The best way to convince a team and investors to join you is to focus on the business outcomes of your customers.1:02:08 - Where can we find Steve and Sol online? www.truesalesresults.com & https://www.linkedin.com/in/sol-cates-649736/

https://entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/KatieCrepeau.jpg ()Architects Practicing Beyond The Traditional Design Firm Beyond The Box Architects are trained to find solutions. We have a superpower many other people don’t have: we can see a problem and create a way to solve it. This gives us a huge opportunity to lead both as traditional practitioners and in roles in our society that require creativity and solutions for critical problems. This week on EntreArchitect podcast, Beyond the Box: Architects Practicing Beyond The Traditional Design Firm with Katie Crepeau. Background Katie is an architect and a business consultant based in London, England. She’s an advocate for and a practitioner of social impact design. She’s the founder and editor for http://www.designaffects.com/about/ (Design Affects), an online platform that inspires, teaches and connects those involved in social impact design and much more. Origin Story The earliest memory Katie has of engaging with architecture is around the age of five when she was living in a home she was moving out of. She remembers drawing the plan of her bedroom, complete with the red-orange carpet, and she added all the various elements of that space. Katie’s dad is an engineer and her mom is a teacher who studied art, so a big influence was seeing both of their personalities and approaches to doing things. Both of them inspired Katie and her family to be creative: her dad was focused on precision and technique, and her mom on the expression of creativity. As she began studying and practicing, she wanted to connect with people. Katie studied at Tulane in New Orleans, a very different and distant place from where she grew up in California. There she explored and grew in a new city around new people and was able to define who she was as a person. She thought she’d be pursuing the traditional architecture path, but she’s also aware that she’s a “question-asking” type of person. Following graduation and licensing, she wanted to improve the profession of architecture and reconnect it to who we are as people and to the people we’re trying to impact in the first place. Early in her career, Katie worked with small firms that did residential and urban repurpose and regeneration in New Orleans. When she moved to San Francisco, she got more involved with commercial and developer-led projects. Her background, including volunteering and seeing the change in people because of her giving, led her to take a night course from Berkley called Architecture is Activism. Then began the journey of the next six years of her life to focus on social impact design. What is social impact design? Social impact design is working with marginalized or underserved communities and developing products or services that help them create a better environment for themselves. It includes architecture, systems, and everything that comes along with it. Eventually, Katie became an advocate for social impact design. Though working with a group of architects who were all pressing toward the same goal but lacking a certain business acumen, Katie started looking at other firms who were doing similar things. What is your advice for someone who has a problem they want to solve? Katie advises people to start with a project. Don’t start an organization until you have a project and a client and can validate the demand for what you’re doing. She has a ton of eagerness as well, and a lot of her early projects reflect that. In actuality, it’s about validating your idea before you do anything. Identify the people you want to help, get out there and talk to them about what they do, why they do it, their challenges and more. Following that, you can pitch something to them, similar to the ideas presented in the book, http://amzn.to/2oCXKCM (The Lean Startup). Sometimes when you go down that road you get so wrapped up in...
