In this episode, H and B are joined by special guest Eric Goodman to break down Austin FC's tough 0-1 loss to the Houston Dynamo. We dive into the game's standout moment—a stunning bicycle kick from Houston's Coco Carrasquilla—and discuss how Austin FC's 18 shots just weren't enough to find the back of the net. Next, we cover Josh Wolff's post-match press conference, where frustrations were high. Phil West asked Wolff to elaborate on the missed chances, and things heated up when Jorge questioned whether Wolff has considered stepping down if the playoffs slip away. We also explore the rumors surrounding Wolff's future with Austin FC. Could Atlanta United be eyeing him as their next head coach? We weigh in on the speculation and discuss what it could mean for both clubs. In addition to soccer, we talk about the Texas Longhorns' game against LA Monroe, featuring Arch Manning's highly anticipated first-ever start! Finally, we shift to Europe to talk Premier League and La Liga results! Manchester City rescues a point against Arsenal, while Barcelona continues their dominance in Spain. All that and more in this packed episode!
The former Providence Journal reporter Elliot Jaspin once called Rhode Island a theme park for journalists. The same could be said for advocates of good government. Although there have been fewer cases of public corruption in recent years, issues of government accountability and transparency remain front and center. One person closely monitoring these issues is John Marion, who has served as executive director of Common Cause of Rhode Island since 2008. He keeps a watchful eye on state government and spends long hours at the Statehouse monitoring the General Assembly. Over time, Marion and predecessors including Phil West have been an important voice for reform in Rhode Island. But is that enough when many people believe democracy is on the ballot this November? What is the effect when Donald Trump perpetuates a false narrative about crooked elections? And why are we not seeing more robust competition for legislative seats in Rhode Island? This week on Political Roundtable, political reporter Ian Donnis goes in-depth with head of Common Cause of Rhode Island, John Marion.

Most of RR editorial gathered late last night to react to what can only be described as the worst performance from a Sunderland side we've seen this season, and to talk about the state of play at the club as we look ahead to a difficult few matches against the league's strongest sides. Joining our Gav Henderson for this was Chris Wynn, Phil West and the notorious - but often elusive - Craig "angryman" Chapman. What's the crack? What the utter f*** was that like? 43,000+ fans turned up to watch our complete capitulation, we think they deserved better. Is that the worst performance we've ever seen at the Stadium of Light? What is Tony Mowbray on? The lads try to work out just what the f*** he was thinking yesterday. We all saw this coming with that team selection and setup, so why couldn't Tony see it coming?Going over the recent performances of some players the lads (and listeners) ask questions like: why are poor performers still starting games? Where is the smart rotation? If it isn't working, why not fix it? Why not start Luke O'Nien in midfield?Where does everyone stand currently as we look to games against Norwich, Sheffield Utd and league leaders Burnley? There's a lot of discussion here, so hopefully you find it as cathartic as the lads did. Or maybe you won't...Thanks for listening!#SAFC #EFL #EFLChampionship Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Our Chris Wynn was joined by Phil West late last night to have a look at the upcoming showdown between Tony Mowbray's Sunderland and Alex Neil's Stoke City on Saturday! What's the crack? Well we know a few things about the opposition manager at least. How are we feeling ahead of this battle of red and white post industrial… er… titans; is it all about Alex Neil for us? Should it be? Do we think Mogga and the Lads will be feeling the pressure for this fixture? A few points to prove (and win) at home after a pointless couple results on the road; what can we do to address our lack of control in recent matches? Could Luke O'Nien help make the difference when dealing with a pretty direct and physical Stoke side? Do we dare predict the outcome on Saturday? "Does the team talk write itself?" and all that jazz... All this and much more! Ha'way the Lads! #SAFC #EFL #EFLChampionship Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
To answer our questions about how MLS Season Pass was in its first weekend and how it will evolve, Phil West talks to Jillian Sakovits, one of the many hosts for the new Apple TV soccer endeavor. They talk about building the plane while it flies, storylines from the first week, and everything they're looking forward to this year, including a look at Atlanta United, a team Sakovits knows quite well from her prior broadcasting work. (There was also a cat involved.)
Continuing a tradition started on Moontower Soccer, hosts Jeremiah Bentley and Landon Cotham join Phil West to draft the teams they believe will make (and just miss) this year's playoffs. You can determine if one of them is in danger of being beaten by the “Leftovers” (teams 22 through 29). They also touch on some storylines intriguing them as the season starts.
This week, host Phil West digs out from an ice storm and three days without power to talk to Cameron Collins of two Sounders fan entities – Gorilla FC and the Alliance Council. They talk about the Sounders' recent abbreviated trip to the FIFA Club World Cup, issues with a new jersey sponsor despite Collins' belief that it's their best jersey ever, and perhaps some shared schadenfreude over the L.A. teams' recent travails.
Westward Ho returns for 2023 with Jeremiah Bentley and Phil West sitting down with The Striker's Benjamin Virgen for one last hurrah; Ben's leaving his post as LAFC beat writer for a grand new adventure. We talk about LAFC's prospects for 2023 even as they deal with an exodus of players, nod to the upcoming launch of MLS on Apple and the Coachella Valley Invitational, and discuss the Galaxy supporters' protest over Chris Klein being Chris Klein (and why that's so problematic for some).
After an unplanned hiatus, Westward Ho's back, with Matt Pollard from Last Word on Soccer joining Phil West to talk about Gyasi Zardes moving to Austin FC after spending most of last season with the Rapids. They also talk about the Sounders in the FIFA Club World Cup, whether it's C.J. or J.C. who's the presumptive No. 1 pick in the upcoming SuperDraft, and a World Cup final for which Phil reveals himself to be a heartless France fan.
This week, Mike Turner and Shjon Campbell from the Soccer Capitol Podcast join Jeremiah Bentley and Phil West to talk about the debut of St. Louis CITY SC's new stadium, the ongoing roster build (including Friday's expansion draft), why it's CITY and not just City (or why it needs City in the name at all) and other aspects of St. Louis fandom. Also, just days before the World Cup starts, they talk World Cup.
Thought we'd have a bit of a look at how we got to this point in the season - so our Chris Wynn, Martin Wanless and Phil West jumped on at some insane hour over the weekend to give their thoughts on that Amad assist, that Amad goal, the return of Simms to full active duties, some more talk about Ross Stewart's contract and looking beyond the World Cup break. What's the crack? As the lads decided to record this immediately after the game to take full advantage of all that adrenaline - How does everyone feel after that result - especially the chest clutching finish that nearly killed half the fanbase? AMAD LAD STRIKES AGAIN - Some talent isn't he - with an assist for Ellis Simms first goal since returning from injury, to his magnificent strike in the second half… well it was his pitch on the night.PATTO - 22 years old and getting better all the time.A couple lads returned from injury and we're all very pleased to see it; A nice long break; with the World Cup coming up and the Lads off for a nice trip to Dubai to warm up a little, how are we feeling knowing we'll be returning to league action with the likes of Ross Stewart back in the starting eleven? What did Martin and Phil make of the KLD/Speakman/Jones talk? Martin has a few things to say about the Rossco contract situation and how buying low and selling high is something we should maybe be thinking about; Looking back at the season and how far we've come; are we going into the World Cup break in a pretty decent position all things considered? Are we confident we'll be far more comfortable come the January transfer window? Phil predicts the downfall of Gareth Southgate; something when England win the World Cup we can refer to as #WestSouthGate or #SouthWestGate or whatever works…All this and more! This week, Phil West is joined by San Antonio-based broadcaster Katie Goodman, who has been covering Austin FC this season. They discuss the upcoming Western Conference Finals matchup between Verde and LAFC, get into the proposed new playoff format (and all its games), the possibility of San Diego (and San Antonio) getting an MLS team, and a weird balloon that Fox will debut on Thanksgiving.
The scene is set: the Audi 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs enter Conference Finals Week as LAFC is set to host Austin and Philadelphia are set to host NYCFC. But first, David Gass is joined by Phil West and Rox Fontaine to look back at Sunday's action.
This week, ahead of the big Austin FC-FC Dallas semifinal showdown, we do it Striker MLS Podcast style, with Jon Arnold and Chris Bils joining Phil West for a half-hour packed full of knowledge ahead of learning which Texas team will take on LAFC for an MLS Cup date.
This week, Landon Cotham and J. Sam Jones join Phil West to break down the 2022 MLS Cup playoffs. They imagine an alternate universe in which the current Wooden Spoon winner gets a second chance entry into the playoffs, marvel at Chicharito's new playoff shoes, and ultimately and unanimously crown a winner.
This week, Jeremiah Bentley and Phil West talk to Sarita Patel from Vancouver Whitecaps FC about that team's remarkable surge into a Round 0 playoff match this Sunday at Minnesota. They also consider the rest of the Decision Day drama about to unfold (including the other two win-and-you're-in matches), dive into Thursday's Leagues Cup announcement, and discuss St. Louis' bold plan to roll with what they're calling a “Designated Team.”
This week, Phil West talks to Gio Garcia from LA Soccer Hub about LAFC's Shield run, Chicharito's surprise revelation, LA Galaxy's transformation thanks to Riqui Puig and Gaston Brugman, and some assorted soccer storylines, including which Utah Jazz player would help your MLS and how the Mexico and U.S. looked (performance wise and in their new kits) during the international break.
Our Chris Wynn was joined yesterday by Phil West and 'ye olde man of tweed' Nick Barnes to try react to the chaos surrounding Sunderland AFC as Alex Neil joined Stoke City in a shock move that rocked the fanbase! What's the crack? Alex Neil - what the good **** happened there Nick? WHATS HAPPENING? What can Barnesy tell us about Alex Neil's sudden departure? Did he have an inkling something was happening before the Friday announcement? What do we think was the primary motivation for Alex to leave when he did and does it rhyme with honey? The fan reaction has been one of defiance for the most part - rallying around the players as we took on Norwich City on Saturday at the Stadium of Light - good to see... Could the club and Speakman have done more - do we think we'll ever get to the bottom of exactly what's happened with the amount of rumours flying around? Where do we go from here - what do we think the club will do now in its search for a new head coach? As of recording yesterday at noon we hadn't had an announcement from Stoke - did the lack of clarity lead to the Tony Mowbray links… and is there anything in that? The lads try and break down the Sunderland 0-1 Norwich result with all these distractions; Aye. It's a bit of a mess lads and lasses but we move/go again...#SAFC #EFL #EFLChampionship #AlexNeil Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.
Our host Phil West was joined by our Gav Henderson and Rich Speight to talk about all the recent goings on at the club, as Sunderland start to strengthen Alex Neil's squad ahead of the coming 22/23 EFL Championship campaign! What's the crack? A big warm welcome for new recruit Daniel Ballard, as the young defender - and Northern Ireland International - signs from the Arsenal academy; what do we know about him, and are the lads happy with his arrival? Does the signing of players like Ballard show we're on a similar track regarding last season's recruitment model - certain dips into nostalgia aside? I'll see your Borini and raise you a Rudoni; Speaking of nostalgia a rumour has spread after Fabio's wife was contacted on social media - would the lads say no if there was any chance, and should we keep yearning as a fanbase for players of old when the clear plan is to target exciting young talent like Wimbledon's Jack Rudoni, for example… How key were the contracts given to players like Patterson, Gooch, Wright, and particularly Roberts? Just what does it all show about the way we're continuing to go about our business as a club? A farewell to David Preece - the lads wonder over his leaving the coaching staff after a great season overall, as well as helping to bring the best out of a young Patto - we don't think he'll be out of work for long… Alex Neil knows who and what he wants, do we think we're far from having it all in place, and are the lads at all worried about the short space of time between now and the start of the season? All this and much more! Listen in! #SAFC #EFL #EFLChampionship See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Well it's been a weird week or so as an SAFC fan, leaving a few of our editorial group with more questions than answers surrounding all kinds of issues, so Phil West, Rich Speight and Martin Wanless got together to see what they made of it all! What's the crack? The Fans Together, Methven and Donald - some games are likely being played here, how much of a risk is this proposed deal, how likely is it to go any further than it has, and who benefits from the chaos it brings - as it's certainly not the fans is it? KLD: what would the lads like to see from our Chairman? Minor shareholder's games aside - should he be showing more commitment to both the immediate and long-term future of the club? Speakman: As we're on the subject of running things... the sporting director has been chatting recently, so what do the lads make of what he had to say and what do they make of the job he's done so far? Is club business being impacted by the shareholders infighting? Can Sunderland AFC multitask as an organisation? Would Steve Davison maybe like to get the club shop open properly and fully stocked up perhaps? Transfer rumours have been few and far between so far but there's been a couple keepers mentioned - what do the lads make of the names we've heard? Do we think young Patto has completely secured his place in the Championship in the eyes of Alex Neil? Hoffmann v SAFC - Our former keeper has not been kind to the club in a recent interview back in Germany, and the club itself has responded to this as you would imagine it might... Bit of legal action on the horizon? Recapturing the momentum and the narrative - has the club let all these recent developments distract from keeping hold of that promotion winning feeling? Speaking of promotion - and to try lighten the mood a bit - Martin tells us all about his epic journey from Australia to see the lads win at Wembley, and what happened next... The mood is not lightened. Seriously lads and lasses, we need the footy back. #SAFC #EFL #EFLChampionship See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A very rough and hungover Gav was joined the morning/night after the night/morning before by our ‘man down under' Martin Wanless and our Phil West, to break down an atmospheric and compelling night at the Stadium of Light - as Sunderland took the lead in our home leg of the Play-off Semi Finals against Sheffield Wednesday - and to look ahead to the away fixture at Hillsborough Monday night! What's the crack? Now that was some atmosphere lads and lasses - an incredible performance from the 44,742 mackems in attendance (and with a few up from South Yorkshire) - so how did it all feel last night? Can the lads remember the last time they felt like that? ROSSCO STRIKES AGAIN; The Loch Ness Drogba drove his way through to take a one goal lead into the second leg on Monday - which row did our Gavin end up in? What did the lads make of Alex Neil's team selection - do they think he got the balance right? So many good performances it's difficult to pick out a particular player deserving of al the praise - but who put their best shift in Friday night? Luke O'Nien managed to nullify Barry Bannan for long periods of the game - can/will he do the same at Hillsborough? Did the scoreline flatter our opponents - they didn't necessarily make it easy but we could've been a few goals clear couldn't we? How do we think Alex Neil will set up for Monday? We can't go looking for a draw, so what would we be looking for... besides a win of course. The gaffer is keen to remind us all we're only halfway there - so bring on Hillsborough! HAWAY THE LADS! #SAFC #SWFC #EFLPlayoffs #LeagueOne #TilTheEnd See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Gav was joined last night by our Chris Wynn and Phil West as they reacted to the end of the EFL League One 21/22 season, and what it all means for Sunderland as we face Sheffield Wednesday in the Play-Off Semi Finals! What's the crack? So here we are lads and lasses - Sunderland are going to face Sheffield Wednesday over two legs, to see who can get to Wembley to face either Milton Keynes or Wycombe Wanderers. How are the lads feeling about Alex Neil's more.. methodical.. approach to matches - particularly the match everyone watched on Saturday? Will this ‘by any means necessary' attitude serve us well in the coming matches? BROADY LAD - He's there again but it looks like he's taken a knock, and as of recording we have no idea as to whether he'll be fit or not this Friday so... what exactly do we do without him if this is the case? Ross Stewart took a knock on Saturday also, although that looked marginally less worrying than Broadhead's - does nothing for the nerves does it? Which players stand out as being the most important/influential as we look to the Play-off Semis - there's a certain Aiden McGeady on the horizon but would Alex Neil want to be using him this late on? Is there time for one last step over? Looking at the midfield - do the lads see the concern over Dan Neil not being selected? Does Embleton fit back there, and how well is Corry Evans performing the task he's been given by the gaffer? The lads try to work out if they're confident or not, and... did you know our Chris was on Sky the other day? We had no idea. All this and more! Once more unto the breach and all the rest! Hawaaaaay the lads!#SAFC #EFL #EFLPlayoffs #LeagueOne #TilTheEnd See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Gav was joined once again yesterday by our Martin Wanless and Phil West, as they looked back in greater detail over our victory on Saturday afternoon, and ahead to Tuesday night's ridiculously important game against Rotherham! What's the crack? We really needed that ahead of our final two regular games of the 21/22 League One season - what did the lads make of the overall performance? Some game from a certain Lynden Gooch - it's a great time to hit form for the lad isn't it?Speaking of form, Alex Neil has Sunderland firing on all cylinders at just the right time - how key is his experience of the play-off pressures going to be?We surely can't not make the play-offs at this stage can we? We are Sunlun of course but still...The lads take a look at the rest of League One and who our rivals are playing this week - some sides are in a far more desperate position than ourselves as they look to stay up; Ahead to Rotherham; how do the lads think we'll set up against them? Gav was joined last night by our Chris Wynn and Phil West to break down Sunderland's massive victory over promotion rivals Oxford Utd on Saturday, and look ahead to an absolutely mental looking Easter Weekend in League One! What's the crack? We needed that - how do the lads feel following another last minute winner for Alex Neil's side? The gaffer was frustrated with the Lads losing the midfield battle in the first half so made changes that - once again - came good; but should he be in that position to begin with?Just how important was that win for our play-off hopes, as the sides around us were held to draws - this goes some way to alleviating some pressure doesn't it?EMBOOOOO - The lad comes good again, what does he have to do to get a start? Is he better as an impact sub?PATTOOOO - Another young lad who has been quietly going about his business looking pretty confident of late... How good a job has he done to grab the Hoff's starting place and keep hold of it?Shades of the Keano season... this an actual thing or has someone simply spiked the lad's drinks? All this and much, much more!
