2022 was a busy year for American soccer, and we've been having all of our writers on to talk about their favorite stories they worked on this year. A bit of a bonus episode, it's a rebroadcast because I want to make sure people read this piece if they haven't Pablo Maurer and Matt Pentz worked for over a year to tell the story of Wee Willie McLean, a player on the United States' 1934 World Cup team who went missing…until Pablo and Matt tracked down his entire life story. That description is selling it very short, definitely go read the piece. And if you still need convincing, here's a rebroadcast of a conversation Matt and Pablo had with the Society for American Soccer History about the story, earlier this year. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-saga-of-wee-willie-mclean/id1586833046?i=1000567524110 https://theathletic.com/3363062/2022/06/14/wee-willie-mclean/ Learn more about your ad choices. In 1934, Wee Willie McLean represented the United States at the 1934 World Cup. Then, just a few years later, he vanished. Pablo Maurer and Matt Pentz spent two years gathering as many details as they could about Willie's life to find out what happened to him. They wrote a story about it and it's absolutely epic, and altogether human. The story is linked in the show's description, so please do give it a read. But today, I want to share a clip from a talk Pablo and Matt did with the Society for American Soccer HIstory, where they discussed the origins of the story, and one of the big breakthroughs in their reporting. Hi guys, long time no talk. The last time we recorded was back in November when the Seattle Sounders were getting bounced from the MLS Playoffs. Seems an awful long time ago, doesn't it? A lot has happened since then, including the Seattle Snowpocalypse, which kept both Likkit and Aaron from recording this week. We don't hit on all of the news, but Jeremiah was joined by Susie Rantz to talk about the Reign moving to Tacoma, the Tacoma Defiance getting a new name, some of the roster moves and the Sounders' preseason up until now. It's a show packed with lots of information. We also interviewed author Matt Pentz about his soon-to-be-released book “The Sounder and the Glory: How the Seattle Sounders showed Major League Soccer How to Win Over America” (pre order here). We should also remind you that Yachtcon: Nights is a little more than a week away. Tickets are about 80 percent sold out, but definitely still available. We're raising money for the Seattle Children's Hospital Autism Center again and will be announcing guests very soon. (Buy tickets) This week's music: "What do tigers dream of?" - Cristian Roldan, "RVIVR - "Ocean Song", Perry Como - "Seattle", RVIVR - “The Tide”, Woody Guthrie - "Roll On Columbia", "Your Journey Begins" - OurMusicBox (Jay Man) (CC BY 4.0) Thanks to James Woollard, Sounders Public Address Announcer, for doing our sponsor reads. We don’t hit on all of the news, but Jeremiah was joined by Susie Rantz to talk about the Reign moving to Tacoma, the Tacoma Defiance getting a new name, some of the roster moves and the Sounders’ preseason up until now. It’s a show packed with lots of information. We’re raising money for the Seattle Children’s Hospital Autism Center again and will be announcing guests very soon. The Seattle Sounders 2016 MLS ‘worst-to-first’ run was as thrilling as it was improbable. When they lifted the Cup last December, their achievement represented a major success for a community fostering soccer culture within the city for more than 40 years. Few are more familiar with the development of the Seattle soccer scene than former Seattle mayor Greg Nickels. Both a fan in their NASL days and a key player in bringing MLS to the Emerald City decades later, Nickels joined Steven Agen—lead author of Resurgence: How Sounders FC Roared Back to Win MLS Cup—for a discussion on Sounders’ impact on Seattle and the construction of CenturyLink Field. Together they reflected on the club’s 2016 title-winning campaign, reviewing reports from key figures within the Seattle sports journalism world including Art Thiel, Matt Pentz, Ari Liljenwall, Andrew Harvey, “Mr. Sounder” Zach Scott, and Nickels himself. Nickels and Agen examined the former Mayor’s individual efforts to bring a soccer-ready stadium to Seattle as well as what their recent title means to the city. Recorded live at Phinney Center by Town Hall Seattle Tuesday, November 28, 2017.

(45:00-1:00:57) Finally, we discuss the #SaveTheCrew vs Toronto FC matchup and other MLS moves.
Another unbeaten weekend in Cascadia leaves two of our clubs firmly in playoff positions and the third just on the edge looking in. Prost Portland editor Matt Hoffman discusses the reasons why Timbers aren't getting the national respect they deserve yet. That's followed by a preview of their match in Toronto, where a result would certainly send a message to anyone sleeping on Portland. It's tough to tell whether it's two point dropped or a point gained as Carl Robinson continues to tinker with his ideal front four. Michael McColl of AFTN joins and give his takes on current playoff hopes, consistency, and the coming road match against New England. Who'll make the starting lineup for the Whitecaps, and will they do enough to keep pace with the Earthquakes for the last playoff spot in the West? The group closes out Ep. 120 by analyzing Sounders' 7-match unbeaten run. Were they firing on all cylinders in Minnesota? Derlis Gonzalez isn't coming to Seattle, but that doesn't mean we don't have interesting questions to ponder as the transfer window closes. Where does Victor Rodriguez fit into this team, given Will Bruin's form? How about Lamar Neagle, for that matter? It's another packed episode of Radio Cascadia -- tune in to hear takes on the biggest stories in the region from the likes of Michael McColl, Matt Hoffman, Ari Liljenwall, and Andrew Harvey. Speaking of Ari and Andrew, they joined Steven Agen in writing Resurgence: How Sounders FC Roared Back to Win MLS Cup, presale available now here. Former Seattle mayor Greg Nickels, ESPNFC.com & Prost Amerika writer Matt Pentz and Seattle sports journalism legend Art Thiel all feature as well in Prost Publishing's effort to commemorate Sounders' 2016 title-winning season. PLAYLIST: 00:00 - Cascadia goal/player of the week, MLS team of the week 07:10 - Timbers triumph over LA, VAR debut, and TFC away ft. Matt Hoffman 31:10 - Points dropped or gained? + Playoff hopes and a trip back east ft. Michael McColl 48:40 - Sounders hunt down Loons, unbeaten in 7 + Neagle/Rodriguez discussion
Four points from two matches in Texas leaves us with plenty to celebrate as we speak with Michael McColl of AFTN and Prost Portland editor Matt Hoffman about their cliubs' successes down south. Whitecaps' 4-0 result in Frisco draws considerable attention and we rate it among their most memorable matches in MLS so far. Our preview of their match in Colorado focuses on the question of consistency, as another performance like the one against Dallas will surely earn points against the struggling Rapids. 2-2 was nothing to scoff at for Portland, but between an odd offside decision and a questionable call on a free kick leading to Houston's equalizer it's no wonder fans were left feeling it was two points dropped. Hoffman deliberates on all of the contentious moments before we move on and discuss Timbers' home match with LA this weekend. Sounders had their own match against LA a weekend ago, and we elaborate on why it was a match no one could afford to lose. Attention then shifts to an inaugural meeting with Minnesota United, a tie near and dear to Andrew's heart. Undefeated weeks are happy weeks on Radio Cascadia, enjoy this one with us! Andrew, Ari and Steven all feautured in Prost Publishing's latest book, Resgurgence: How Sounders FC Roared Back to Win MLS Cup. The book chronicles Seattle's title-winning season, and also includes contributions from former Seattle mayor Greg Nickels, Rapids play by play commentator and BBC veteran Richard Fleming, ESPNFC.com and Prost Amerika writer Matt Pentz, legendary Seattle journalist Art Thiel, and a foreword written by Mr. Sounder himself, Zach Scott. Special pre-sale price available through August 25th here.
Matt Pentz returns to the show to look ahead to the Portland Timbers’ visit to Seattle while Chris and Jamie recap the Timbers’ 4-1 dismantling at the hands to the Montreal Impact and the Thorns’ 2-2 away draw with the Boston Breakers. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Leslie Jones was the breakout star of Sunday night’s 2016 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs action, as the SNL star-turned-MLS fan was treated to four sterling home performances by the lower seeds as the Conference Semifinals got things rolling back-to-back-to-back-to-back. Andrew, David and Matt jump in the studio to give you the highs and lows, starting with the Western Conference, where FC Dallas played it safe and paid for it. Seattle Times reporter Matt Pentz joins the guys to dish on the roller coaster ride that is the Sounders, Brian Schmetzer’s future and the club’s MLS Cup ambitions. Then it’s out to LA, where Colorado ought to be feel fine about a 1-0 loss to the Galaxy. The Eastern Conference was just as tight, with Toronto FC held in check in the late going by New York City FC. Those two goals hurt, though, and now Patrick Vieira and the boys from the Bronx have an uphill battle to climb that could have been avoided had they stuck to their guns from the regular season. Meanwhile, the Impact know who they are, and they aren’t ashamed to bunker and counter, a strategy that gave Montreal a 1-0 lead over the Red Bulls heading back to New York. Former Impact player and RDS commentator Patrick Leduc calls in the dish on the pragmatic Mauro Biello, Drogba-gate and Matteo Mancosu’s emergence. In the mailbag, a New York metro area conundrum, a new MLS Cup champion, payroll vs. home-field advantage and more Ben ‘The Research’ Baer gloating by Sounders fans.
Heineken Rivalry Week is here, and the games are predictably juicy. Don’t sleep on the Rocky Mountain Cup, especially considering the unique place Pablo Mastroeni and Kyle Beckerman occupy in the rivalry. Get the lowdown on the 401 Derby, fight for El Capitan in the Texas Derby and an I-95 clash between the Red Bulls and Revs. Those matches are huge, but the second clash in a week between the Timbers and Sounders is the big daddy. Why, you ask? The Seattle Times’ Matt Pentz calls in to explain. But wait, that means we left one Heineken Rivalry Week out. Not true! Orlando City SC head coach (and former New York City FC boss) Jason Kreis chats with Andrew about what went wrong in the Big Apple, what he’s learned in the last seven months and what his vision for the Lions’ future entails. Skip head to the 23:50 mark to listen to the interview! In the mailbag, Hope Solo’s suspension, big-money moves for some US national teamers, Doyle puts the kibosh on a couple discussion topics and a listener shares his MLS dream journal, which definitely isn’t weird. Nope. Not at all.
We talk to Sounders beat writer Matthew Pentz from the Seattle times regarding Sigi Schmid's decision to part ways with the team. Check us out on Twitter @thelounge1380
One leg down, one to go in the Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs Conference Semifinals. Andrew, David and Matt go around the league to breakdownSunday’s postseason quad-header. They start in Seattle, where FC Dallas got a road goal but couldn’t keep Clint Dempsey from a moment of glory that may wipe his Sounders slate clean. Seattle Times reporter Matt Pentz gives his take and provides an injury update, then the guys hand the Timbers the edge against Vancouver then chat with Oregonian’s Jamie Goldberg. Out in the Eastern Conference, Didier Drogba finally came back down to earth against Crew SC, but the Impact still found a way to win. MLSoccer.com’s own Oli Tremblay joins to talk Drogba leg locks, Patrice Bernier’s resurgence and the vibe in Quebec. D.C. United beat writer Pablo Maurer follows that up by pointing out the capital club’s desolate performance might have been by plan. Was the Red Bulls 1-0 win enough to advance? Only time will tell. In the mailbag, the GAM has officially retired, and the guys ponder what Eddie Johnson’s legacy will be. Jermaine Jones isn’t done, but he may have a new team. What does the man himself have to say? Plus, Chicago Fire coaching candidates get Doyle in negotiator mode.
Heineken Rivalry Week is upon us, but first the guys break down all the midweek action from the MLS regular season, Canadian Championship and CONCACAF Champions League. First up, an unexpected loss for the Red Bulls that confirmed Simon’s hot take on the Fire from Monday’s show. But what about that corner kick? PRO says no good, but Dave’s not so sure. While that was going down, the Vancouver Whitecaps lifted a cup and sealed their place in the CCL. Speaking of CCL, which MLS teams are positioned best to advance to the knockout stage? The weekend gets started with a classic, a Cali Clasico to be specific. Both teams are hot, but can San Jose really knock off the high-flying Galaxy? Then, on Saturday, Canada gets in on the act, as Toronto host Montreal in a matchup of two playoff hopefuls. The Impact need wins, but will they have Didier Drogba to help them get one? Soccer Sunday is the main course, and the Seattle Times’ Matt Pentz and Fox Sports’ John Strong break down #SEAvPOR and #NYvDC. In the mailbag, the guys give away the Cascadia Crazy 8s from adidas and ponder the future of the Copa Centenario. Plus, which team is being pitched as “Showtime on Grass?”
Grant chats with longtime Seattle Sounders beat writer Matt Pentz of The Athletic about his new book, The Sound and the Glory: How the Seattle Sounders Showed Major League Soccer How to Win Over America. Pentz explains how the Sounders became the blueprint for MLS to feel truly "major league" in their city, which has been followed since then by others like Atlanta United and LAFC.
