In this week's episode we chatted to Mandu Reid leader of the @womensequalityparty. We talked about how the party is tackling all the important issues (violence against women, pay gap, childcare etc) and not just on International Women's Day, but all year round. Why other political parties don't have 'women's rights' at the top of their agenda, and why WEP’s work is so important and needed. We were so inspired by her words about feminism, why it's not a hostile word, why the party is also for men and why they should get behind their agenda, and how she deals with resistance from women themselves. This is something I've struggled a lot with myself, especially recently with my video about Sarah Everard and my latest video on sexism, and it was so interesting to hear her talk about how internalized misogyny and living in a patriarchal society as women, but also how compassion helps her navigate through all of that. Finally, we talked about a new type of politics, different from the known stereotype, more genuine and why it's time for a change. In short, it was one of the most interesting interviews we've had and I hope you take the time to listen! For those of you who are in London, as you know the elections are coming up, I urge you to consider giving your vote (in the orange ballot) to WEP if gender equality matters to you. @itsmikeleigh joined the party straight after the show and is now a proud member which gave me so much joy and hopefully serves as an example to other men that women's rights are human rights and should be in everyone's interest, not just women. #podcast #WEP #women

Catherine Mayer is an author and co-founder of the Women's Equality Party in the U.K. In this beautifully raw interview, she opens up in an honest conversation about grief with Everyday Ubuntu host, Mungi Ngomane. Mayer lost her husband, musician Andy Gill, to Covid-19 in February 2020, 41 days after her mother was herself widowed. Though physically isolated, Mother and daughter embarked on this journey of loss and grief together. From there, a book was born, entitled 'Good Grief'. In the course of this conversation, Mayer shares how grief can give you clarity on what truly matters. What does that mean? For Catherine, this was using her time to benefit others, especially with the current state of the world.……..Visit mungingomane.coFollow Mungi on InstagramFollow The Brand is Female on Instagram

Mandu Reid is the leader of the Women's Equality Party. The first woman of colour to lead a political party in Britain.  She believes that equality for women isn't just a women's issue. She says that when women fulfil their potential, everyone benefits.  Mandu's first experience of injustice was racial injustice. She grew up in the shadow of apartheid South Africa - her mother is black, her father is white. When she was eight her family took a car journey and en route they stopped at a service station. She was confused that her father was allowed to use clean, gleaming toilets and her mother was forced to use substandard toilets. She thought it might be because her father was a man. Her parents explained to her that it was because of the colour of her mother's skin.  She remembers the outrage she felt. Her whole premise is that her cause isn't anti-men, it's pro-everyone. She believes that equality means better politics, a more vibrant economy, a workforce that draws on the talents of the whole population and a society at ease with itself. Her recent endeavours have been to launch MNTL HLTH to help break the silence on mental health creating events and activities to raise awareness in the mental health space.

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is Sandi Toksvig. Host of BBC Radio 4's News Quiz until June 2015, she is also a writer and comedian and recently entered the world of politics, helping to found the Women's Equality Party. Her parents were both broadcasters: her mother worked as a studio manager and announcer before she married, her Danish father's job as a foreign correspondent took the family around the world. Sandi and her siblings spent much of their childhood in the United States and when she was "asked to leave" yet another American school, her parents sent her to boarding school in England. She soon decided to lose her strong American accent and went on to Cambridge, where she performed in the Footlights. In addition to writing, her most recent acting role was in Call the Midwife and she continues to appear regularly on TV and radio shows as a panelist: she is to start as the next host of QI, taking over from Stephen Fry. She's also Chancellor of Portsmouth University.
