On this weeks podcast, John meets up with Fr Eamon Kelly from Donegal who shares with us his experience of volunteering with the charity Mary's Meals. We have our regular run through the liturgical odds and ins this week and the reflection on the Sunday gospel with our wandering panellist Shane to assist John in the process. Step by Step to feed the next Child - Mary's Meals.Starting out initially as a response to the needs of families in the former Yugoslavia in 1983, the charity has now expanded serving 2,429,182 children across 17 countries, in communities where hunger and poverty would prevent children from gaining an education. Fr Eamon tells us how for the past eleven years in Ireland, volunteers have walked to Knock Shrine to raise awareness of, and funds for, Mary's Meals. For 2024 they are now launching Step by Step to Feed the Next Child 2024 with walks originating in Malin (Donegal), Thurles, Cavan, the Spire (Dublin), Kilkenny, Longford, Limerick and N Ireland. All walks go from 7 August to 15 August. They are seeking people to help create new walks, join in the walks for a day or half day or a few hours, collect funds, take a sponsor card or promote the walk. It costs €22 to give a child a meal each day in school for a school year and every eleven cents raised provides a meal. This is a great way of gaining a bit of fitness and doing great work at the same time. Contact details are: Eamonn Kelly (Rev), Parochial House, Convoy, Co. This episode's guest is Nicola Maria Rose! Sharing her passion for business, brands and people. Nikki is a budding, aspiring, passionate and keen Voice Over Artist… with a difference. She understands business. She spent 20+ years working in business and marketing - creating, building and managing brands…right up to Board level. In 2014 she threw caution to the wind and took a brave leap out of the corporate world to set up her own business from scratch, a kiddies nursery. After a challenging start, a few mistakes, several curveballs, she managed to get things right and grew it into a successful little gem of a business. When the time felt right she exited out and sold up just before the pandemic. During Covid her mum fell ill, and she flew back and forth to N Ireland to help care for her. Unfortunately, she passed at the end of 2020. Sad times. In 2021 she set up another business, a consultancy for small businesses and entrepreneurs. Gradually over the three years she has organically grown in to mentoring and coaching, because that's what her clients need. She loves helping others, and feels honored to be able to guide businesses and even individuals to have a vision, set goals and achieve them. What's key is that she is able to share real-life experiences of having her own business, and so she has genuine empathy. She is also a great listener, which is the most important skill a mentor needs to have. She is closely linked with the Association of Business Mentors and champion their values as an ambassador of the great work that they do, and she supports them with driving awareness of mentoring and its benefits. Everyone should have a mentor! With a twist of fate, here she is! Continuing to support and promote companies to achieve their visions, she now uses her voice to bring brands and businesses to life. She is excited to have embarked on her VO journey. It's never too late to learn something new! She started being coached in October 2022 by the wonderful team of coaches at Richcraft, with a view to hitting a big milestone of getting her reels done in March. AP correspondent Charles de Ledesma reports on Brexit Northern Ireland.
In this episode I welcome back one of the shows most popular guests. Jordan Buchanan is the Chief Economist of the property portal PropertPal, and it's been six months since I have had Jordan on the show. So much has happened since our last conversation, I have become a little unclear as to where our property market is right now in N Ireland. Interest rates for example reached their highest point in 1981, levelling off at just over 16%, which is pretty unthinkable in this day and age, however since that time and up until 2021, rates went down to almost zero in many jurisdictions across the world. The world has changed insurmountably in the last 18 months given the pandemic and the most recent disaster zone, namely the ongoing war in Ukraine, and this really has caused all kinds of trouble across so many countries, businesses and ultimately households, as we are now in the middle of a cost of living crisis, which is quite new to most people middle aged and under, who are experiencing these shocks to our economy for the first time. In this conversation Jordan eloquently summarises what has happened in the last two years in our housing market, to include the QE policy measures that undoubtedly assisted the housing market and dare I say it, facilitated a housing boom right across the UK and Ireland. Interest rates, inflation and labour markets are causing all kinds of volatility, and we get into a fair bit of detail as to how all of this impacts the market and how things may play out over the next twelve months. For anyone interested in the economy, the property market, and just generally trying to improve your understanding into some of these big ticket items like inflation and cost of living crisis, you will get great value from this podcast. Finally next month we are re-launching our recovery and restructuring business. The bottom line is that we accept the economy is heading towards a downward trend, and given the experience we have at GDP, we feel compelled to try and help, save, restructure as many businesses as possible. If you or you know someone who might be concerned about this, then you can reach me at conor@gdpni.com As ever, a review would be great if you have a moment, and please share this episode with a friend. Until next time, look after yourself, and each other, CD

*) Russia announces 3-day #ceasefire for civilian evacuations in Ukraine's Mariupol Russia announces a three-day cease-fire for evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal steel plant in Ukraine's Black Sea port city of #Mariupol. In a statement, Russia's defence ministry said an evacuation corridor would be opened in the #Azovstal area "based on humanitarian principles". The humanitarian corridor will be opened for the evacuation of civilians, including workers, women and children, from the Azovstal plant site on May 5-7, from 0500 GMT to 1500 GMT, the ministry said. *) UN: More than 300 evacuated from Mariupol Over 300 civilians have been evacuated from Mariupol and other areas in southern Ukraine as part of a joint UN-Red Cross operation, the United Nations said. The evacuations came as Ukrainian forces inside Mariupol's Azovstal steel works said they were fighting "difficult bloody battles" against Russian troops. Mariupol is one of the most battered cities in #Ukraine. A group of Ukrainian forces are still holding out at the plant with hundreds of civilians trapped inside. *) UK votes in local elections with historic N Ireland result predicted Polls have opened across the UK in local and regional elections that could prove historic in Northern Ireland and heap further pressure on embattled Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The contest in Belfast could see a pro-Irish nationalist party win for the first time in the troubled history of the British province. On the other side, poor results could reignite simmering discontent within Johnson's ruling Conservatives about his leadership after a string of recent scandals. *) Colombia extradites 'world's most wanted' drug trafficker to US #Colombia has extradited the world's most wanted drug trafficker, Dairo Antonio Usuga David, to the United States, where he faces indictments in three federal courts Colombian President Ivan Duque said that Usuga David is "comparable only to Pablo Escobar", referring to the late former head of the Medellin drug cartel. The former rural warlord had stayed on the run for more than a decade by corrupting state officials and aligning himself with combattants on the left and right. Usuga David and his drug cartel are accused of illegally bringing over 73 tonnes of cocaine into the US between 2003 and 2012. And, finally... *) Real Madrid beat Man City, to face Liverpool in Champions League final Real Madrid have fought back from the brink of elimination to beat Manchester City 3-1 after extra time in an enthralling and dramatic Champions League semi-final. City led 1-0 on the night when Riyad Mahrez scored after 73 minutes, but Real substitute Rodrygo equalised in the last minute of normal time. Five minutes into extra time Karim Benzema converted a penalty awarded for a foul on him and Real held the shell-shocked English side at bay to reach the final. Real, the record 13-times European champions, will play Liverpool on May 28 in Paris. #RealMadrid

Sea shanties, all of the UK being forced to travel to England, the grim situation in Eastern Europe, and the beauty of women standing in solidarity of other women - like when a 16 y/o girl in N. Ireland in 2016 was arrested for buying abortion pills online and hundreds and hundreds of activists turned themselves in at police stations, claiming they too had done this. On Patreon they tell their own stories of abortions - Rebecca has 6. This episode sponsored by Curious Elixers. Use code BRUTAL22 for a discount. @BrutalVulnerability
On the podcast I chat with Dr. Gerry Waldron, Assistant Director of Public Health in Northern Ireland on literally his last working day before he retires. Instead of being a nice, soft, gentle end to his career the last two years have been chaotic for him and his team as they played a pivotal role in managing the pandemic in the north. We chatted about his career, moving to the north at the height of the troubles, coping with a huge personal bump in the road and of course, Covid and where it is all going. Enjoy the show! This episode will highlight the relationships that Lesley Carroll has been cultivating for a lifetime in Northern Ireland and how as a natural leader, she has cultivated bringing resiliency practices to her beloved country. After learning about the Community Resiliency Model(CRM)®, she saw a way forward from the entanglement of past experiences, not just for herself but for the community of Northern Ireland. She believes passionately that the wellness skills of the Community Resiliency Model could help those caught in the cycle of traumatic responses continually triggered by unsettled politics and public debate. She had been privileged to visit other conflicted communities across the world and her vision includes a vision for sharing the CRM skills in other places by training up people from Northern Ireland who can testify to the effectiveness of the skills and share them from their own experience with those living in similar situations. Since then, Lesley has facilitated the Trauma Resource Institute to train trainers to deliver the Community Resiliency Model and has put steps in motion to form the Community Resiliency Network Ireland. Victim Support NI is one of the organizations influenced by the Community Resiliency Model. Jolena Flett is currently Head of Services for Victim Support NI, the leading charity supporting all victims of crime in Northern Ireland. Jolena is responsible for the integration of CRM into the organization at all levels for staff and volunteers. Current work is now expanding on the CRM work through the development of a modified module that can be used by other victim support organizations across Europe.

Northern Ireland. For many people around the world, it is a country whose history conjures images of civil unrest and militia-style warfare. Mike lived in Belfast in 2000-01 and has remained friends with several people there, including Beth McGardle. As we explore the idea of Jesus having a "bigger table" for people, Beth brings wise insight about the healing message of the Gospel in a divided country like N. Ireland. It's insight that any country struggling with division needs to hear.
