It was always Sinead father's dream for her to be an international lawyer and that became her goal and ambition too. Suddenly, at the age of 15 her father passed away. But she didn't just loose her parent, she lost her compass. What did she want to do? Who was she really? Sinead went off to university, she studied psychology, and it didn't take long for the shy 7 year-old to come back out. Her imposter kicked in. She lived in fear of being found out, of speaking up in meetings, of being asked to do anything on her own. Sinead realized she was going to have to tackle her imposter syndrome, step up, and change things for the better, and that's exactly what she's done. After a broken finger brought on a debilitating illness, author Rae Cairns lost two years as her doctors searched for the right treatment. A bad reaction to drugs caused her hair to fall out. When her health had stabilised enough for her to return to writing, she lost her literary agent. Undeterred, Rae self-published her novel. After being shortlisted for a major award, she had a new agent and a two-book publishing deal with HarperCollins within a few weeks. Rae talks to James and Ashley about living with chronic invisible illness, coping with brain fog, and cultivating the resilience to share a story that, in her words, she just had to tell.    Rae Cairns's debut novel, 'The Good Mother,' was shortlisted for the 2021 Ned Kelly Awards for Best Debut Crime Fiction, and was published by HarperCollins in 2022. Her second novel will be out in 2023. Rae lives in Sydney. You can buy a copy of 'The Good Mother' from your local bookshop, Booktopia or wherever else good books are sold. Hey Magic Makers! Let's keep Pride month going by hearing more stories from our friends in the queer community! Today I am speaking with Georgia Clark, a novelist, performer, screenwriter, and the host and founder of a popular storytelling night called Generation Women in New York City. She has an amazing queer romance novel called “Island Time” coming out tomorrow, June 14, 2022. Georgia specializes in romcom, which in my personal opinion, is a very under-appreciated genre! This conversation is all about how to make a living AND a life as a creative entrepreneur, the rollercoaster it can be to work on a long term project, like a novel, the journey she has been on, and all of the ways we can make money to support our art, rather than putting pressure on our art to make us money. So while you are listening, ask yourself, why are you drawn to a certain creative pursuit? Usually it is about more than just a job. Usually it is about seeking happiness and passion. In this day and age, we often only see people's highlight reels on life, not the other things they do to live and work. Creative people often cobble together things that attract money to fund their art! How should we understand the history of post-war Britain? In The Welfare State Generation Women, Agency and Class in Britain since 1945 (Bloomsbury, 2022), Eve Worth, a Research Fellow on the Changing Elites project in the Department of Social Policy and Intervention at the University of Oxford, explores this question by foregrounding the lives of women who grew up, worked, and retired as the first ‘welfare state generation'. The book uses oral history methods to tease out the changing role and changing experiences of the welfare state, along with the role of women in working in and administering that welfare state. It thinks through the sense of autonomy and control, as well as changing perceptions of class identity and feminism, in the lives of women, and thus tells a new story of post-war British history. The book speaks to a huge range of academic audiences and is also essential reading for anyone interested in the history of Britain. Our Story Leah and Rachel are two sisters from the Book of Genesis who were both married to the patriarch Jacob. Our Guest Blair Glaser is a writer, leadership consultant, and licensed therapist who has led many workshops for women, including "Women Writing to Change the World," at the renowned Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. These days, she works primarily with women executives on developing effective strategies and teams. As a writer she has been a correspondent and columnist for Playbill Online and a wellness columnist for Feminist.com. In addition to writing for a variety of online publications including Shondaland, Greatist, Best Self, and The Muse to name a few, her article "A Man Blatantly Stole My Ideas. My Reaction Surprised Me." was syndicated from Huffington Post. She's read stories live at events such as Read 650, Generation Women, and won a prize for doing so at The Woodstock Bookfest.  You can learn more about Blair's work at http://www.blairglaser.com/ (www.blairglaser.com).  Find her at https://twitter.com/BlairGlaser (@blairglaser on) https://twitter.com/BlairGlaser (Twitter), https://www.instagram.com/blair_glaser/ (@Blair.Glaser on IG), and https://www.facebook.com/blair.glaser/ (on Facebook) Our Conversation Blair frames her tale of Leah and Rachel within the context of where she first engaged with this story: at a major Jewish conference in New York City where she was speaking about stereotypes about Jewish women in the media. An orthodox rabbi who preceded her on the stage told this Book of Genesis story and offered an interpretation: in relationships, we fall in love with Rachel (the ideal), but we end up married to Leah (the real human being).   We also explore: Women in the Bible as “shadows” of women  How to navigate relationships when they stop being sexy and how to forgive ourselves and our partners for being human  Jane Austen and the “marriage industrial complex” over the ages What might be lost as we reject partnership because so many are rejecting monogamy What it takes to read between the lines of history to find the foremothers The focus on how we've come a long way, and that's clear as Blair works with women leaders and watching them orient themselves toward a future of gender equity   The secret of creative tension and how the true quest is to fight together, not in opposition   Our Music Music on the show is by the wonderful Beth Sweeney and Billy Hardy, a Celtic Fiddle and multi-instrumental Duo based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The traditional Irish reel we play at the start of the show is called The College Groves. Find out about their music and shows at: http://billyandbeth.com/ (billyandbeth.com) Connect With Your Own Stories and with Marisa's Work Join Marisa's online writing community, thehttps://www.marisagoudy.com/sovereign-writers ( Sovereign Writers' Knot) Explore Marisa's work and get a copy of The Sovereignty Knot : https://www.knotworkstorytelling.com/episode/www.marisagoudy.com (www.marisagoudy.com) Follow the show on https://www.instagram.com/knotworkpodcast/ (Instagram), https://www.facebook.com/knotworkstorytelling (Facebook), and join our vibranthttps://www.facebook.com/groups/knotworkpodcast ( listeners' community).

They discuss how the growth of the welfare state after 1945 and its contraction in the 1980s was central to the lives of women born in Britain between the late 1930s and early 1950s and conclude that historians should move beyond the focus on women's emotions and personal identity to consider their relationship with the state as employer, educator and provider.

But what starts as a personal and professional nightmare transforms into something even savvy, cynical Liv Goldenhorn couldn't begin to imagine. It Had to Be You cleverly unites Liv, Savannah, and couples as diverse and unique as New York City itself, in a joyous Love-Actually-style braided narrative. The result is a smart, modern, utterly charming love story that truly speaks to our times. Georgia Clark is a novelist and performer. Nina Lesiga is a performing artist following a 30-year career as a corporate chemist. Her favorite place IS outside her comfort zone because that's where Nina finds some of the most exceptional experiences. She refers to these occurrences as "experience climaxes" or "experience orgasms". Nina's storyteller and a ukulelist. Nina's appeared on "Stories from the Stage".on PBS, "Generation Women", Take-Two Storytelling, and "P(r)ose of Pie". Her stories are often quirky, fun, and full of uncommon adventures Nina was a Brooklynite most of her life - she immigrated to CT for a job relocation. Nina is one of the co-organizers of Pechakucha Night Bridgeport visual storytelling and a member of the Story City Troupe in Middletown, CT As a ukulelist, Nina organizes pop up events in unexpected places such as elevators, farms and beaches. Sometimes she brings a dozen loaner ukuleles with her to a public space and gets strangers to play with her. Nina teaches beginner ukulele workshops at colleges, community centers, and libraries. Interesting facts: Nina is an avid solo traveler. Wherever she goes, she seeks out authentic local experiences. She loves getting into "the good kind of trouble" - and there are often lots of funny moments involved. Nina takes trips into NYC with the intent of staying out all night. She loves attending 24-hour marathon performances and the challenge of what to do when she misses (or knows she's gonna miss) the last Metro-North train at 1:30 AM back home to CT. This is an outgrowth of guest speaker talks she gives on "The Art of Daycations" and "Solo Travel Boot Camp". While a chemist, Nina moonlighted as a dance and music studio owner and teacher. She also formed a youth leadership organization in the performing for at-risk teens named Spirit GDA. Related to my story "The Beverage Project". This story was born for the storytelling event "So What Happened Was". (Asher Novek) Tellers share an unpolished story about what happened to them during the last 7 days. Unlike living in NYC, sometimes absolutely nothing story worthy happens to me in CT in the span of a week. I decided I would have to try to make something happen. Like what? Like a self-directed study/ crash course on Caribbean aphrodisiacs! This awakened/revisited my curiosity about some intriguing facts that I stumbled upon in Grenada and St. Lucia while on a cruise vacation a few years prior. Living in CT, Nina found myself challenged to run with my idea of a crash course because she didn't have the kind of contact network that she had in NY to do my initial research. But this made her journey all the more interesting and fun. Nina's story focuses on Irish moss drinks. Originally she wanted to uncover insights about spiced rum too. My rum contacts were weak and I had to postpone that part because of the story deadline. Nina's story was workshopped at "Fail Better Storytelling" and story sharing circles in CT, MA, and NH. Nina told this story a few times at story events in CT, MA. This is its first NYC appearance. She is often asked by audience members after sharing the story, where she bought the "love potion" so they can get some. She loves it when the audience is engaged with her story. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/revisionarypodcast/support
