Before getting into today’s episode, I want to acknowledge the passing of Jeff Schewe. Jeff’s contributions to the photographic community were immense, and his passion for the craft touched countless photographers worldwide. I learned so much about printing and processing from Jeff. He will be deeply missed, and my thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone whose life he influenced through his teaching and work.On a happier note, congratulations to Makeda Best, who recently stepped into a wonderful new role as the photo curator at the MOMA. I can’t wait to see the programming, exhibitions and content that the photo department puts out under Makeda’s watch. She has a great background and has curated several really interesting projects and exhibitions in the past. As for today’s podcast topic, we are exploring a simple idea: the photographs we almost make are, in some ways, one of our greatest barriers to our true work. Most photographers think their biggest mistakes happen after pressing the shutter, things like exposure errors, missed focus, or weak composition. But the greatest loss is the image we never make at all. We see something interesting, pause for a moment, and then let hesitation talk us out of taking the photograph. My biggest issue is that I sometimes expect something better down the road. For Others, we’re uncertain whether the scene is worth photographing. Sometimes we’re distracted. Whatever the reason, the moment passes, and the photograph exists only in memory. This week, I’ll explore why hesitation may cost us more images than technical mistakes and how learning to trust our curiosity can lead to richer photographic experiences. After all, some of our favorite photographs are often the ones we almost walked past. Thanks for listening, and as always, keep seeing the world through your images as gifts that keep giving.

Send us Fan MailWhat if your life wasn't supposed to look the same all year round? What if the quiet periods weren't failures — they were part of the design? In this episode, Makeda breaks down the concept of seasonal living and what it actually looks like to build a life by design rather than by default. Drawing from her own experience working across different industries, disciplines and creative seasons, this is a conversation about giving yourself permission to live in chapters — and building a business that supports that. This isn't about lack of consistency. It's about a deeper, more intentional kind of rhythm. In this episode:Why working seasonally is a feature, not a flawHow to stop measuring yourself against people on a completely different timelineWhat "life by design" actually means in practice — and what it costs to ignore itHow to build income streams and creative projects that flex with who you areThis one is for you if you've ever felt guilty for not being "on" all the time, wondered why the traditional 9-to-5 or even the hustle-all-day entrepreneur model has never felt right for you, or if you're craving a life that actually fits. This is the permission slip episode. Press play.
Send us Fan MailHave you ever been told to pick a lane? To focus, simplify, specialise — as if everything that makes you you is somehow the problem? This episode is for the creative who has never fit neatly into one box. The one with a portfolio that looks like five different people built it. The one who lights up in multiple rooms, across multiple disciplines, and has spent years wondering if that's a flaw or a gift. It's a gift. And in this episode, we're proving it.Makeda dives into the multi-hyphenate life — what it really means to hold multiple creative identities at once, how each lane you occupy feeds the others, and why the world's obsession with niching down has quietly been costing creatives like you your full power. In this episode:Why "doing too much" is often just range that hasn't been claimed yetHow your seemingly unrelated skills are actually your unique creative fingerprintThe mindset shift that changes everything — from scattered to strategicWhy the most impactful creatives rarely have just one titleThis one is for you if you've ever apologised for being interested in too many things, downplayed your range on a bio, or felt like you had to shrink yourself to be taken seriously.Welcome to Create & Elevate. You're in the right room.
Send us Fan MailThis episode was born from a real conversation. A moment that got uncomfortable — and that's exactly why it needed to be said out loud. This one is for the artist. The performer. The creative entrepreneur who is undeniably talented, widely respected in their lane — and quietly, privately, desperately unfulfilled. You didn't mean to stop. But somewhere between the bookings and the reputation and the identity people projected onto you — you did. And now the box that was built around your one great thing feels less like a home and more like a ceiling. In this episode, Makeda speaks directly to the creative who has plateaued. Not because they ran out of talent. Not because the opportunities dried up. But because somewhere along the way, they stopped believing there was more — or stopped giving themselves permission to want it.This episode will challenge you. It may even trigger you. Good. That means it's working. In this episode:Why plateaus aren't about talent — they're about permissionThe difference between being put in a box and staying in oneHow comfort quietly becomes a cage — and what it costs you to stayWhat it looks like to outgrow an identity that no longer fitsWhy the people around you will sometimes resist your evolution — and why that's not your cue to shrinkThe first honest question you need to ask yourself if you're ready to moveThis one is for you if people know you for one thing, that thing no longer sets your soul on fire the way it used to, and some part of you already knows there's a next level — you've just been waiting for someone to say it's okay to go there. It's okay. It's more than okay. It's necessary.

That's the question that lingers when you exit a job — a space you once poured yourself into — and all you feel is… relief. No guilt. No tears. Just a quiet, steady exhale. This week on Rooted and Rewired, we're sitting with that moment. The one where walking away doesn't feel dramatic, or devastating, or even bittersweet. It just feels right. And maybe, that's the real signal that it's time.✨ When the Ending Is Quiet but ClearIn our culture, leaving a job is often painted as a big emotional shift — exit interviews, long goodbyes, tears at your desk. But what if the real exits — the honest ones — are quiet? What if the ease you feel isn't detachment, but clarity? We're talking about those moments where:* You're not angry, just… done.* You're not burned out, but you're no longer invested.* You're not fearful, just ready to move forward.
Welcome back to the Rooted & Rewired podcast. I'm your host Aiysha, and today, we're diving deep into the mystery that is MGM's FROM. This episode is all about Season 1 — how it started, how it pulled us in, and the chilling questions we still can't answer. If you've been screaming ‘What is this place?!' — this one's for you.”

The focus of this exhibit is on two photo albums in particular owned by Harriet Hayden that contain 87 cartes-de-visite (small portrait photograph mounted on a piece of card) that help to tell us about Black material culture, social activism, and the daily lives of key figures in the abolitionist movement in Boston. In episode 163, we do something different. I felt like God was inviting me to have one more guest before the finale, and I had several exciting options in mind. Then, every single one said no. I was left with a sense there was one more episode, but no clue who to invite. Then, on the morning of my self-determined deadline, I felt like God wanted me to read the verse of the day, and immediately I knew who the guest would be: the "suffering servant" himself, Jesus. Obviously, I didn't get Jesus on the mic, but he has left us his story. This releases during Holy Week, and gives us a glimpse into how Jesus' suffering sets an example for how to step in the midst of ours. You'll also hear an amazingly beautiful song by Makeda McCreary that is perfect for Holy Week and every day after. What cups has God lovingly chosen not to take from you? Kwanzaa is an African American sacred week created by Maulana Karenga in 1966. Its purpose is to have African Americans focus on seven principles which are foundations of a holistic and free life. In this final episode of 2022 Makeda and I focus on the fifth principle which is Nia or purpose. We have a passionate conversation about waking up from delusions and living our life purpose with joy and courage. We talk about:My favorite part of Kwanzaa celebrationsHow and why we celebrate Kwanzaa in our family Why I am obsessed with life purpose and why you should be tooCan your life purpose vary as you enter different stages of lifeWhat happens when raising kids feels at odds with your life purposeThe dangers of falling into delusion –any thoughts or narratives that take you away from your life purpose. How it feels to live my life as a Queen and use that energy to drive my life purposeResources:Makeda and I both highly recommend Malidoma Some's book the Healing Wisdom of African because it shows how to use ritual, nature and community to help you remember your life purpose.Makeda suggests the ickigai method as a way to gain awareness of your vocation, mission, and career.I suggest that you take a mini-retreat regularly to confirm your life purpose and to make sure that your life is aligned with fulfilling on it. When we decide to be faithful to God, and that's really what it is a decision that we make, led by the Holy Spirit, to to embrace the truth of Scripture, to not just publicly say, I believe, but to demonstrate that belief by obedience. And we've said, when you do that there is going to be conflict, the enemy is going to rise up against you. Now, what I want to focus in on in this message is the necessity of judgment, judgment, in every sense of that word. The last several weeks we've been focusing in on judgment and judgment is a necessary part of God's work. And we need to embrace that, acknowledge that and teach that. I'm amazed at these individuals who say that they want to focus upon the Gospels, but they never speak about judgment when so many of the parables, so many of the teachings of Messiah, focus in on judgment.
