3 Principles to Master Storytelling | Shaan Puri | How I Write Podcast

How I Write

Every year, 25 million people download Shaan's podcast. Sure, he's a brilliant entrepreneur, investor, and writer, but there's one skill in particular that keeps Shaan's audience coming back for more: storytelling.  And not the kind of storytelling that feels like an IQ contest. (I know you know what I mean.) Shaan tells stories that burst with aliveness, that make readers laugh out loud with joy or fall silent with understanding. And as a result, he's built more than just a following; he's built a fandom.  In this episode, Shaan reveals every framework he knows for telling stories so well they make your reader go, “Wait, how did they do that?”. And I mean, every framework. You won't find this in the ole' self-help aisle. Plus, he shows you exactly how to do it. We deconstruct everything from popular movies to business origin stories to viral Twitter threads.  Stories are the #1 way to grab readers' attention, get them to like you, and ultimately, turn them into fans. And this episode is a masterclass on how to do it. Want to build influence with great ideas and simple writing? Look no further than Howard Marks.  Most smart people use big words and plastic jargon to reinforce the barrier between themselves and “the common folk.” Howard, on the other hand, breaks down this barrier, and that's why his ideas are so influential (and why he's Warren Buffett's favorite author).  Ironically enough, simple writing is the hardest to master. Einstein once said that there are four types of intelligence: “bright, brilliant, genius, and simple.” In this episode, you'll hear how Howard turns decades of investment expertise into clear, simple language.  You'll learn:  Why high-quality work is more important than ever How discovering your unique point of view is crucial if you want your ideas to make an impact Howard's four tenets for high-quality writing: clarity, humor, interesting topics, and challenging your reader.  Ultimately, you'll learn how this billionaire investor shares his ideas in a way that engages and delights his audience, and how you can, too. The Secret to Telling a Great Story | Amor Towles | How I Write Podcast

How I Write

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2024 76:28

Amor Towles is our modern day F. Scott Fitzgerald. Sure, he's a critically acclaimed, award-winning novelist (ever heard of “A Gentleman in Moscow”?) but not because he's cracked the publishing algorithm. Rather than scheming how many books he can sell or how many critics he can impress, his #1 goal is to fulfill his covenant with his reader. “They've invested in my art, and I owe it to them.” Towles' work oozes sensory detail and psychological richness. While most writers would describe writing as “creative” or “free-spirited,” he describes it as “accurate” and “careful.” Every sentence he writes serves a larger truth. In this episode, Towles gives one of the most detailed breakdowns of his writing process that we've had so far on How I Write.  You'll learn the step-by-step process for how Towles drafts each novel; specifically, how outlining your work can free up your creative, poetic side. You'll learn how to write descriptively — without bogging down your reader in indulgent details. You'll learn how to master craft through repetition; how to approach your first draft versus your second; how to influence your writing with reading; and how to create art that serves a broader purpose.  Ultimately, you'll learn how to tell exceptional stories from one of today's most exceptional storytellers. Hate writing show notes? Me too. In this episode, I'm breaking down how I use Capsho to generate the show notes for Clipped. Capsho is an AI copywriting software for podcasters. To get started using it, simply upload your audio file. Then Capsho will get to work generating marketing copy for your podcast. Capsho's AI only takes 10 minutes to start pumping out content for an episode. Capsho's Outputs Episode Titles Show Notes Transcriptions Social Media Captions  Email Marketing Copy Blog Posts LinkedIn Articles Episode Quotes YouTube Descriptions I mainly use Capsho to speed up my writing workflow and assist me in coming up with ideas for my show notes and episode titles. In addition, I also use Capsho's transcriptions, email marketing copy, and blog posts.  Capsho Tips It's important to take the copy that's generated and add your secret sauce to it. This is the case with any AI copywriting software. Do not copy-paste what Capsho generates for you. Google knows the difference between AI-generated copy and human-written copy. It could harm your podcast and website ranking if you copy things verbatim. Plus it won't sound natural, and won't sound like you. People listen to your podcast because they like YOU. Keep it that way. Capsho is a tool. Take what it gives you and get to work personalizing it. Make edits, and put things in your own voice, vibe, and style. Additionally, check that the copy Capsho is generating is accurate.  With a little practice, you can start using Capsho to accelerate and improve your podcast marketing machine. Kwame from the Negotiate Anything Podcast asks, "What is the value of show notes?"TL;DRGood show notes allow you to highlight important information for your podcast listeners, link to relevant information, and help your audience take action on the things you discuss. So in this episode, we'll discuss how to write good show notes for your podcast episodes.#1. Make them easy to readPeople tend to skim through podcast show notes, so make them easy to scan. Include bullet points and write in short paragraphs so that it's easier for your listeners to find what they're looking for.You can also organize your show notes into different sections. An example would be splitting them up into a summary of the episode, links to resources mentioned in the episode, and specific calls to action you want your listeners to take.#2. Don't write a bookWhen it comes to show notes, less is more. Include the main points, quick links to additional resources, and your calls to action, but don't write any more than you need to.#3. Create an episode webpageThis is where you put EVERYTHING. Including (but not limited to) an embed player for people to listen, show notes, full word-for-word transcript, and a picture of your guest.Creating an episode webpage (whether it's on your own custom website or on Buzzsprout's podcast websites) will help search engines like Google quickly find your podcast, categorize it, and start showing it to new listeners. This will help search engines like Google quickly find your podcast episode, categorize it, and start showing it to new listenersRecord your podcasting question at Speakpipe.com/Buzzsprout to be featured on a future episode.Review Podcasting Q&A in Podchaser to let us know what you think of the show.

093: Why I write “podcast scripts”

Careful Tech

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 17, 2020 5:22

Um… (Why I write outlines before each podcast.) Short one today, and kind of a “back-of-house” focus. I thought it might be worthwhile to share a little bit about how the sausage gets made. My MO for creating this podcast each day. So different podcasters have different philosophies on show prep. Some completely wing it. They may have a general idea of what they’re going to talk about, but they improvise, playing off of their cohosts to create something spur-of-the-moment Others are more like an NPR host, carefully preparing a script and effectively reading it on the air. I fall somewhere in between, but if I’m honest, a little bit closer to the latter.. I come into each recording session with a pretty well-fleshed-out outline of what I want to say. There are a bunch of reasons I do this. For one, while I may have a topic in mind before I record, I’m often surprised to see just how much that topic can shift, based on what I write down. Occasionally, I end up discarding my original idea and picking a different topic entirely. Second reason for outlining my podcast scripts: I make a better show when I plan it out ahead of time. There’s a limit, a legit ceiling, to how clever I can be off the top of my head. When I improvise too much, I feel like I too often just scratch the surface of a topic. Gaps in logic and obvious corollaries go unexplored, just because they didn’t spring to mind in the moment. Whereas when I outline, and especially when I read through that outline a time or two, I end up restructuring my thoughts into something resembling an argument. “Oh, that belongs up there,” or, “Hey, that’s kind of irrelevant, isn’t it!” Finally, while outlining my ideas ahead of time requires some time investment on the front end, it saves me a ton of work in postproduction. Because I know pretty much what I want to say, I don’t go chasing ideas down rabbit trails that lead nowhere. I don’t stuff every pause with meaningless filler words like “Ummmmmm”, “Errrrrr,” “So…….”. And I’m less likely to stumble over my own tongue trying to get my ideas out of my brain. Now, I do still occasionally mess up. And I haven’t yet excised the word “Um” from my vocabulary. But those missteps are relatively minimal, and fairly easy to clean up in the post-podcast edit. I edit the podcast on the iPad, mainly because my favorite app is so geared to that specific use case. A quick swipe of the Apple Pencil, and that “Um” is banished to the digital netherworld. Of course, there are downsides to scripts and outlines First, you lose a little bit of spontaneity and energy when you have a script in hand. It’s just easy to hear to difference between a recitation and an improvised take. I try to keep my delivery loose and relaxed, but I know it’s not quite the same as “doing it live.” Second, this approach really works best for a solo podcast. If I had a cohost (which I’d love to eventually have!), I’d need to be a little bit more nimble, a little better able to give and take on the fly. But for now, it works for me. I like the end result, and I feel like it’s worth the investment. So that’s my justification for the podcast outline. Just in case you’re curious, I’m gonna dump this outline into the show notes, so you can see for yourself how closely I hewed to my script for this episode. What’s your take on podcast show prep? Do you like to plan every pivot, or do you prefer to show up and see what spills out of your head? I’d love to hear from you…Thanks very much Video Game Coin sound effect by harrietniamh. In the debut episode of the Get Paid to Write podcast, brought to you by Ghostwriter School, I share a little bit about my story, how I got into ghostwriting, and what you can expect to learn about in future episodes. So many people have a passion, desire, and talent for writing but they assume writing is a low-paying profession or more of a hobby to do during vacation instead of a vocation. Or, if they do try to make their foray into becoming a professional writer, they struggle, writing for pennies, and give up. It’s hard work to succeed in any business, but if you do it right, it’s absolutely possible. Don’t feel discouraged if you’ve struggled—that’s why I’m here to help. I’m here to tell you that you can make writing your full-time job or even just a side hustle that can become a significant source of income. Like me and many others, you can make writing into a business that can provide for you, your family, and be something you’re so passionate about that it gets you excited to get out of bed every morning, even on the coldest days of the year. It can help you start your day with a big smile on your face.  In this episode, I discuss:  What you can expect to learn from the Get Paid to Write podcast—launching your writing business, turning the task of finding writing clients into something that is easy and enjoyable for you, how to market your writing services in your comfort zone, how to get out of the trap of writing for low-fee projects, and more! My story—why did I get into ghostwriting? What has it done for me? How did I go from working at home in between my full-time job to buying commercial property and running a ghostwriting company with multiple USA Today bestsellers to its name?  More importantly, what can becoming a professional writer do for you? How can it change your life for the better? Guests you can expect to appear on the Get Paid to Write podcast in future episodes—clients I’ve worked with, members of my team, etc. Learn more at GhostwriterSchool.com

Episode 25: Book Writing & How to Extract the Story We Really Want to Tell w/Azul Terronez

Boss Dad Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2019 40:24

The process of creating and writing a book is a bit like giving birth— there’s a lot we go through to get to that raw, honest truth. What are some of the hurdles that get in the way of creation? What is the first step we need to take to start writing that book? Why is it so important to not try to control the message that reveals itself? On this episode, book coach and my book doula, Azul Terronez, shares on why everyone has a book (or two) in them, and how to extract that magic. "Most people try to write as the editor and not the creator. That’s why they can’t get their message out." -Azul Terronez   Things We Learned From This Episode 1. How to extract the essence of what we want to write (19:49 - 20:45) When we’re thinking and reflecting, it takes the time and willingness to go deep to get to the real gold. In order to get to the emotionally triggered, meaningful things, it’s important to think longer than we usually give ourselves space to.   2. What makes a book special (21:18 - 23:38) The hardest part of writing a book is looking into ourselves. What makes a book special isn’t the technical pieces in it. It’s what is in our souls, and what’s unique about us. That’s what people resonate with.   3. The first step to writing your book (28:33 - 29:49) Empty your head and put the contents on paper. It gets rid of confusion and helps you find clarity. Most of the time you have more than one book sitting in your head at once, and you need to untangle those ideas. It will help you see the book differently and not worry about the book in your head anymore.   Writing a book is a vehicle of personal transformation, but in order for that to happen, we have to find our voice, figure out what we’re trying to say, and let it out. If we miss this step, we end up writing the book we think you should write, not the story we actually need to tell. It’s all about finding your message in your book, not finding it and then writing it. The process of extracting the message can’t be ruled by outlines and structures. Clare and TB introduce themselves to the podcast world in their inaugural episode. Huzzah! They chat about when they came up with the idea of Lesbians Who Write (beer was involved) and why they started writing lesbian fiction in the first place. Clare lobs TB the thorny question of what exactly lesbian fiction is and who can write it. They discover how history influenced both of their writing careers, leaving TB a historian, slightly heartbroken. They move on to what’s their favorite part of writing and how the power of deadlines impacts their careers.

Often times they are already blogging, podcasting, and making plenty of other kinds of content for the web. Each of these three mediums have their strengths and weaknesses, but I have very specific views on why video is the best for certain things (including teaching and building brand loyalty) and not for others. In this episode of the podcast I make my case for video and why it should be a big part of your content strategy.
