As President-elect Joe Biden enters into a transition stage, many anticipate a significant change in the US climate change policy and the ESG universe in general. What exactly can we expect to happen while the Senate Election results are yet to be announced? Chuka Umunna was once touted as a future leader of the Labour Party. In this week’s IC Interview, he explains why you may be able to do more good in the world of business than politics. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Chuka has had a varied career which has involved being a public figure for much of the last 10 years. The common thread running through his two-decade career, first in corporate law, then in public policy, and now back in business has been desire to build a better and more responsible capitalism in which all citizens have stake. The son of an entrepreneur, from a mixed heritage family, he has observed how he would not have had the opportunities he had were it not for the power of enterprise. Not afraid to try new enterprises in politics and to challenge group think and tribalism, he was one of a number of MPs who left the main parties to set up the new party, Change UK. He switched to the Liberal Democrats before leaving politics. For any organisation to thrive, Chuka believes internal challenge is vital, as is an understanding that success is not all about any one individual but a group. But any group needs a leader to lead and bring decisions to a head.Top Tip - Draw up a strategy – which will always evolve - and then focus laser like on the tactical execution of it, whilst having a ‘Plan B’ if ‘Plan A’ doesn’t work out.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Alexandra Wood started her tailoring business in 2007 as a hobby and has since designed and made clothing for hundreds of high-profile men who want to make a positive impact to the way they look and feel. Her career started in Savile Row, as one of the first, female owned tailoring businesses. She then went on to re-open the longest standing tailors (400 years) in Bishop's Stortford, with a new, modernised version of men's tailoring. The brand has recently expanded from made to measure tailoring to successful, ready to wear collections. Alex continues to break the mould when it comes to delivering exceptional quality and service in menswear. The brand has helped land politician Chuka Umunna on GQ's Best-Dressed top 50 twice, and GQ Columnist Tony Parsons named them ‘Tailor of the 21st Century'. Tristram Hunt, director of the V&A wore an Alexandra Wood two-piece while cutting the ribbon on the vaunted Christian Dior retrospective, and so did director Rupert Goold, while showcasing his new film Judy at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. In this episode of the MenswearStyle Podcast we interview Alexandra Wood about how she first got started in men's tailoring and the story of how she set up her business. It was whilst on maternity leave that Alex began as a visiting tailor, meeting clients in their offices or at home. She now serves her clients at the brand's Savile Row showroom and Bishop's Stortford store, whilst also managing the marketing and eCommerce for the brand. Our host Peter Brooker and Alex also chat about education and training, the differences between design and cutting, elevating a man's style, why you shouldn't follow trends, and opening a 1000 sq ft shop to showcase new Alexandra Wood ready to wear collections.Whilst we have your attention, be sure to sign up to our daily MenswearStyle newsletter here. Was Chuka Umunna's fall from 'hero to zero' in Election 2019 the most spectacular fall from grace for a politician once tipped to be the first black prime minister and once dubbed 'The British Obama'? Political commentators Kiri Kankhwende and Lester Holloway discuss.
Journalist, women's rights campaigner and rape survivor Jenn Selby made headlines this year when she stood as a parliamentary candidate against Mark Field, the Tory MP who was filmed grabbing a female Greenpeace activist by the neck. He stood down shortly after the campaign commenced, citing 'divisive politics'.Selby also managed to get the Lib Dems to adopt Women's Equality Party policies in exchange for her standing down in the seat of Cities of London and Westminster, handing over the reigns to Chuka Umunna. But how do you campaign for parliament (and also gear up to stand in the London Assembly elections next year) and still make money to pay your rent? The NHS has taken centre stage in the election campaign today, with Labour and the Tories clashing again over whether the NHS is "up for sale" in a US trade deal. Today Jeremy Corbyn produced what he said were 451 pages of "uncensored" government documents which, he said, showed the NHS would be "on the table" in talks with the Trump administration. But the Tories hit back, accusing the Labour leader of "out-and-out lying" - deliberately taking passages out of context from documents which had been publicly available online for weeks. Boris Johnson described the Labour claims as "total nonsense", insisting: "The NHS is not on the table in any way." So what's the truth? We get Robert's take and we hear from Romilly Weeks about the key points from the documents. We talk to ITV News Scotland Correspondent Peter Smith who was at the SNP's manifesto launch in Glasgow - he takes us through the headlines as Nicola Sturgeon insisted there is "every chance" her party will hold the balance of power at Westminster after the general election. A little further afield, we hear from ITV News Europe Editor James Mates, who's in Spain (lucky him). He's been speaking to Brits living there who will be voting in the election back home about what's on their mind as they prepare to cast their vote. And Daniel and Shehab discuss a very important question, sparked by a tweet by Lib Dem candidate Chuka Umunna - do you have chips when you have a Full English breakfast? With Brexit the main preoccupation for politicians in Britain, the opposition Labour Party has announced a shift in policy which would see the UK retaining most of the elements of its current relationship with the EU. It wants Britain to have full access to the single market and stay a member of the customs union. But that does not go far enough for some staunchly pro-EU members of the party who want Britain to stay part of the European Economic Area. HARDtalk’s Zeinab Badawi speaks to Labour MP and prominent EU campaigner Chuka Umunna about challenging the Conservative government and his own Labour Party leadership on Brexit. Are we living in an Age of Rage? On the first episode of ANGER MANAGEMENT WITH NICK CLEGG, the former deputy prime minister talks to Nigel Farage, former Ukip leader and one of the most divisive figures in British political history. A wave of populist anger carried the EU referendum for the Leave side – but what happens now? What shaped Nigel Farage’s ideas? Does anger drive his politics, or something deeper? And why does he love chaos? ”Chuka Umunna said the other day that we had stolen [young] people's future from them,” he tells Nick Clegg in a remarkable 45-minute conversation. ”Well I very much hope we have.”“In 1945 one country lost World War 2. It was us.”“My politics has not been based on anger. It has been based on frustration.”“The young people look about the European Union as being this bright shiny future… Nick, they will change their minds.”Anger Management with Nick Clegg is created by Podmasters, producers of the hit Brexit podcast Remainiacs. It’s time we came to to our senses. Brexit is a disaster and must be stopped. Leave campaigners promised our exit from the European Union would herald a glorious new era – the sunlit uplands of ‘global Britain’, with new trade deals signed in a matter of months and an extra £350 million per week for the NHS. But what do we have today? Sterling has collapsed, Boris has been busy bungling in Brussels, and the government’s own leaked economic assessments show that leaving the EU will harm every single region of the country, especially ‘left behind’ areas that voted to Leave. The public was misled, and as David Davis once said, ‘If a democracy cannot change its mind, it ceases to be a democracy’. Let’s end this madness and call the whole thing off. That’s the reasoning of the Remoaners. But can you imagine the damage we’d do to our politics if we overturned the democratic expression of 17 million people – the single biggest mandate in British history? If these sneering liberals had their way, the masses would be forced to vote in referendum after referendum until they gave the ‘correct’ answer. What part of ‘take back control’ don’t they understand? And spare us the whingeing over economic forecasts. We all remember Project Fear and the phoney establishment warnings that the sky would fall in once we voted to Leave. Is it time the public voted again on this defining issue of our times? Or should we embrace the opportunities presented by leaving the EU?Arguing in favour of the motion were Gina Miller, the businesswoman and campaigner who wasd the lead claimant in the successful legal fight to allow parliament to vote on whether the UK could start the process of leaving the EU; and Chuka Umunna, Labour MP for Streatham and a prominent pro-EU campaigner, who is now the leader of a coalition of cross-party groups representing 500,000 members pushing for a referendum on the final EU deal.Arguing against the motion were Gerard Lyons, one of the country’s leading economists and an expert on the global economy, and co-author of Clean Brexit: Why Leaving The EU Still Makes Sense; and Isabel Oakeshott, a pro-Brexit journalist and broadcaster who was political editor of The Sunday Times and authored The Bad Boys of Brexit, an inside account of Nigel Farage and Arron Banks’ Leave.EU campaign. The debate was chaired by Nick Robinson, presenter on Radio 4’s Today programme and former BBC political editor. Keiran, Rob and Leo then look at what the myriad of polling on Brexit tells us about public opinion on the subject and indeed whether it matters considering the relative lack of difference in policy on Europe shared by the two main parties in Westminster. The podcast concludes with each of the panellists explaining what they will be looking out for when Westminster returns in the autumn. Follow this week's guests: @keiranpedley @leobarasi @robvance Please note: The podcast will now take a three week break for the summer unless a major political story breaks.

Recorded on Saturday 19 October, 2013. as part of the School Fights strand at the Battle of Ideas festival The place of independent schools in Britain’s education landscape has never been so intensely debated. According to Martin Stephen, former high master of St Paul’s School, two of the three main political parties hate independent schools ‘to the core of their being’, while the Conservatives are run by so many public schoolboys that they cannot afford to extend ‘the merest hand of friendship’ to such schools without being caricatured by the media. But do private schools protest too much about ‘posh prejudice’? The 7% of pupils who attend fee-paying schools go on to dominate Oxbridge places and elite professions such as law, the media and science. Are those who defend private schools prepared to defend the perpetuation of such inequality on the grounds of individual freedom? Or is it not true that independent schools are full of ‘toffs’ when a third of pupils in schools in the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (of independent schools) have bursary support? Might the growing popularity of private schools be an indictment of failing comprehensive schools? Is it right that parents who make sacrifices for their children’s education are made to feel such an outlay is morally questionable? Is it necessarily wrong to pay for education? And when so many politicians across the political divide have enjoyed the benefits of a private education, from Eton boys David Cameron, Oliver Letwin and Boris Johnson to supposed class warriors Ed Balls, Harriett Harman and Chuka Umunna, it is hypocritical of them to distance themselves from the independent sector and seek to undermine it? Is opposition to private schools motivated as much by a stale left-wing prejudice against aspiration as a real commitment to public provision? What if one values both equality and choice? Are these ideals hopelessly incompatible when it comes to the debate about private education? And where do new models of schooling that combine private and public provisions, such as Free Schools and Academies, fit into the debate? Is opposition to private schools just part of a more general hostility to private institutions? Or is it essential to forging a fair education system that benefits all pupils? The Greek election in June 2012 has saved Europe from economic and financial meltdown - for now. No-one in Europe believes the combined currency, banking and sovereign debt trauma is over. And right across the continent, politicians are struggling to answer a simple question: how does Europe find a way back to sustainable economic growth?Stephen Sackur talks to Labour's business spokesman Chuka Umunna. He says active government can revive and reshape capitalism. Are business leaders or the public ready to believe him?(Image: Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna (left) with Labour Party leader Ed Miliband. Credit: Chris Radburn / PA Wire)
