Matt Fraction really should be writing the new Batman comic, but instead he made the mistake of wondering, "What exactly is this comic strip Jeff and Brooke are talking about?" It's a dangerous question to pose to yourself. Even more so, as Matt discovered, if one makes the mistake of Googling this comic strip. It kind of opens a Pandora's box. Which is what happened, and the next thing Matt knew, he was reading years' worth of Chickweed Lanes. Seriously guys, he took pages of notes! After the deep immersion, he agreed to join us on the podcast to talk about the things he witnessed. That includes: couples going to TGI Fingerbang's, something known as "ffawnky mozm fimps," curious children who lift mommy's skirt, hetero-curious ballet dancers, buttholes that look like clown's mouths, falling in love with Nazis, vaginas (with and without crawfish), "knockout gams," how much Brooke Mc-El-Dee knows about menstruation (not much!), elderly men who produce ink when startled, the hypnotic sexiness of cat's buttholes, and a final strip so surprising, it floors Brooke Dillman, almost literally. And this after two of the earlier strips nearly killed her already! Along the way, we talk about Dilbert, Alan Moore, Gene Simmons, and Kansas City's most famous serial killer. Also Matt makes a really good point about Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's our largest episode ever and for a good reason! Drake! Dillman! Fraction! Let's go! The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: You can find all of the strips on Instagram by clicking here (https://www.instagram.com/p/DHPuijSRw0C/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==). We've abandoned Twitter, because it's terrible, but you can now find us on Bluesky by clicking here (https://bsky.app/profile/9chickweedrage.bsky.social/post/3lkhq52yxvc2u). We'll be asking the question—should you learn self-defense from summon who struggles with basic reality? Spoiler, the answer is no, no you shouldn't. This is a fun one, y'all. Serene Mechel-Dillman talks about the global success of her film documenting first-hand accounts of the terminally ill who have used medical aid in dying (MAID). Airing on Amazon Prime, Take Me Out Feet First has been in the top five TV documentaries for the past three months, with more than 24 million minutes of viewing. About Serene A New York native and dancer with a passion for the visual arts, Serene attended The School of American Ballet, Tenafly High School then The University of Vermont. Post graduation, she opted out of law school and worked at an advertising agency in New York, founded a company that imported baskets from Haiti, then moved to Los Angeles to work in production on television commercials. Commercial production stuck and she worked her way up until she became a producer. In 2014 Serene conceived and directed the documentary film, “Getting to The Nutcracker”, a behind the scenes look at what it takes to produce the classic ballet from auditions to final performance. The movie garnered 7 major festival awards, including a Grand Jury Prize, Audience Award, Best Direction, and Best Feature Documentary. Her second documentary, “The 5th Dementia” is about a Los Angeles-based band whose members live with Alzheimer's, dementia and Parkinson's. They are able to sing and play music despite their neurodegenerative diseases. "Take Me Out Feet First" is her first documentary series. The first 6 episodes of season 1 are currently airing on Amazon Prime. Look for season 2 later this year. Key Takeaways Medical aid in dying (MAID) is the practice where a physician provides a terminally ill patient with the means to voluntarily and intentionally end their own life. This usually involves prescribing a lethal dose of medication that the patient can self-administer. "Medical aid in dying" is distinct from "assisted suicide." Medical aid in dying involves the self-administration of prescribed medication by terminally ill patients, and there are strict safeguards in place to prevent abuse. Oregon's Death with Dignity Act, enacted in 1997, has not reported a single instance of abuse since its initiation 27 years ago. The term "suicide" implies a desire to die, whereas medical aid in dying is a choice made by individuals facing an unavoidable terminal illness. Compassion & Choices is a nonprofit organization in every US state that advocates for end-of-life care options, including medical aid in dying. The organization works to expand and improve end-of life care and ensure that patients can make their own decisions about their treatment and how they wish to spend their final days.

What a pleasure it was to conduct this fascinating interview with a humble leader, pioneer, and USPTA Hall of Fame recipient, Dr Jack Groppel. Emma has followed Jack's career over the years, watching him present live many times and he has always openly shared his secrets to success. In this episode, Jack talks about the 3 C's (and an extra leadership quality) when it comes to being the best coach you can be. He talks about his early career from studying wildlife biology to those 17 words that one of his professors said, which ultimately changed the direction of his life. He talks about what the business world can learn from sports and how it is important to be humble in your success. Check out some of the highlights below; 1.31: Worst coaching moment: Know when to refer your client to someone else. You can everything to everyone. Sometimes you need to eat humble pie. 2.58: Best coaching moment: Working with Michael Chang - then he goes on to win the French Open three months later. Be humble and be careful what you credit for. Your players still need to execute. 6.56: Sliding Doors: From wildlife biology to having a mentor that believes in you. Dr. Charles Dillman, associate professor of kinesiology, told Jack these 17 words after only one semester that ultimately changed the trajectory of his career: ‘If you really apply yourself, you could become a pioneering leader in the science of tennis performance.' 11.35: What makes a Great Coach? (Connection, Character, and Curiosity) Connection: No one teaches us how to listen - true connection allows for this. Character: Who are you at your core? Why do you coach? Curiosity: What are you deeply curious about? 15.39: Why are more people not curious? Be careful not to get set in your ways and don't just coach the way that you were coached because it worked for you. Find solutions to problems. 17.07: Why do you do what you do? (Do not judge your answer but know your WHY) 18.19: What matters most RIGHT NOW? 20.03: Tennis saved me. 22.00: What can the Corporate world learn from tennis? Focus on the 3 pillars: Physiology - how the brain lights up when you move. (Microbursts) Psychology - What is productive behavior? Nutrition - Food is a drug - how are you eating? 23.55: Agape love - unconditional love (to love thy neighbor in the workplace) Late 80's early 90's - Purpose was important but no one was talking about it. If you were in the workplace prior to 1995 - you were non-contactable. But now we are accessible 24 hours, 7 days, 365 days a year. So who is teaching: Boundaries - how to set boundaries Intentional - how to be intentional with our time Choices - how are you making the right choices 27.19: Conflict can be healthy. Start with what we have in common. 28.39: Work/Life Integration - read the article here: https://www.shrm.org/ResourcesAndTools/hr-topics/employee-relations/Pages/From-WorkLife-Balance-to-WorkLife-Integration.aspx 30.04: Follow John Wooden is considered the greatest NCAA basketball head coach of all time. 31.08: What makes a great leader? Character (with yourself) and care (for others). The Coaching Podcast is sponsored by The Sampson Agency - a talent entertainment and sports management company owned and operated by Tina Samara. Jack Groppel has been inducted into the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Hall of Fame. Groppel has been a profound influencer in the world of athletics in sports science. Dr. Jack Groppel is an internationally recognized authority and pioneer in the science of human performance, and an expert in fitness and nutrition. Dr. Groppel is an Adjunct Professor of Management at the J.L. Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Dr. Groppel is the author of The Corporate Athlete. He developed the Corporate Athlete concept for his training program while serving as an associate professor of kinesiology and bioengineering at the University of Illinois helping both business executives and athletes increase performance levels. In 1992, he combined his program with Dr. Jim Loehr to form the Human Performance Institute, formerly LGE Performance Systems, Inc. A fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine, Dr. Groppel is also a board certified nutritionist in the American College of Nutrition and a former Research Associate to the U.S. Olympic Training Center. He served for 16 years as the Chairman of the National Sport Science Committee of the United States Tennis Association. Sliding Doors Story: Seventeen words — spoken by a UI associate professor of kinesiology — would change Jack Groppel's life in a way even he couldn't imagine at the time. It was the mid-1970s and Groppel, fresh off earning his bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, was about to begin working toward UI degree No. 2, in kinesiology. “Sport science was a relatively young field of study” at the time, he remembers. “I had played tennis at Illinois and loved sport but didn't realize that the study of sport science was even a discipline. “The department head, Dr. Rollin Wright, extended me grace and admitted me into the master of science program. But my greatest memory is of Dr. Charles Dillman, associate professor of kinesiology, telling me these words after only one semester: ‘If you really apply yourself, you could become a pioneering leader in the science of tennis performance.' “That was all it took. “I went straight through my MS degree, studying and writing about tennis science, went to Florida State for my Ph.D., then got hired as the men's tennis coach at Illinois and a professor in kinesiology. I later became the chair of the National Sport Science Committee of the United States Tennis Association, received tenure at Illinois, left tenure at Illinois to start my own business, sold that business to Johnson & Johnson and am now back in higher education at Judson University. “All this because of Dr. Wright's belief in me, and Dr. Dillman's encouraging words on that crisp, windy day in May 1974 in Freer Hall.” Connect with Jack below. https://www.linkedin.com/in/jackgroppel/ Related Articles VIDEO: Jack Groppel on 'The Critical Key to Harnessing the Science of Human Performance' FORBES: A sports scientist's Rx for all leaders

Mental health is a huge issue in the United States and there are shocking statistics to prove it. When we consider the fact that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 5 adults experience at least one mental health condition every year, it's hard to deny that we need to be making mental health awareness more of a priority. Unfortunately, there also tends to be a significant stigma attached to anything related to mental health, which is why it's so essential that we acknowledge good mental health efforts and work to overcome the barriers that have been put up that keep us from addressing mental health in a positive, productive way. So, the government really did bug Edda's bikini bottoms. And her response to that is to dangle her recently removed bikini from a window to confuse the agents of the Creepy National Furtiveness Agency (you know, the CNFA). Somehow, Edda knows to lower the bikini bottom down to the open window (she knows it's open somehow?) where two children are talking about inflatable office buildings. As if "inflatable office building" is a toy that children can buy and/or would be interested in for some reason. The children talking about "blowing up" these inflatable buildings convinces the CNFA that actual buildings are being exploded. So they arrest Amos & Edda (hooray!) only to let them go immediately (boo!). They explain that they overheard the plot on Edda's bugged bikini bottom. Edda, wearing a dress, explains that she is not in fact wearing her bikini bottom under her dress. Because that is something that needs to be clarified. Edda talking about not wearing her bikini bottom convinces the CNFA agents that she's likely not wearing underwear, I guess. So it short circuits their brains, because that's what women talking about undergarments does to men ALWAYS. Edda & Amos leave the short-circuited agents in their apartment and go to dinner. And at dinner, Edda tells Amos she's not wearing her bikini bottom and that short-circuits him too. Because men are incapable of hearing about undergarments without being paralyzed. Fun stuff! Welcome to my first solocast  - it's a prelude to an upcoming interview with Gau Bodepudi, the creator of AWAKENINNERFIRE.COM – essentially cultivating community around the practice of agnihotra in his hometown, Austin, Texas.  Agnihotra is an ancient Vedic technology, its purpose to heal individual and planet, the environment near and far, by attuning to nature's rhythms.  Examples of personal healing include:  reducing stress levels, releasing negative habit patterns and addictions.  Examples of planetary healing include:  enhancing food production, replenishing soil nutrients, reducing atmospheric pollution including nuclear radiation.  The word “agni” means fire; “hotra” means healing.  While Gau's day job is that of patent attorney, he has taken on the role of film producer and is currently producing a documentary titled “Awaken the Inner Fire.”  (Its website is agnihotradocumentary.com.)  His aim:  to prove this ancient wisdom with modern science.  He has already filmed one clinical trial, documenting the benefits of agnihotra in Baltimore and is planning to document another at UC Santa Barbara.  Gau's purpose:  to highlight the benefits of agnihotra in healing individuals and planet, creating a sustainable world and ultimately, saving the planet. In this upcoming interview, we will touch upon the elements of agnihotra and how it is performed including the timing.  Agnihotra is performed at the junction points of the day – sunrise and sunset - both powerful touchpoints that allow us to attune to nature's subtle vibratory energy.  We will touch upon how he started to practice agnihotra and why it is important to his life purpose, including the importance of his spiritual teacher.  I was struck by what his teacher told him: “You cannot escape from the responsibility of being a leader because you know more than the others.”  It was then that he realized he was trying to escape from such responsibility - as leadership requires stepping up and being exposed, vulnerable.  Along with responsibility, leadership requires risk – and hence, vulnerability.  We will touch on the importance of community around the agnihotra practice.  I'm jazzed about exploring with Gau how he conceived of the documentary film; his trajectory from patent attorney to documentary filmmaker and what this journey has been like for him:  its purpose; how he tracks progress; why scientific studies are important.Gau used the term “scientific humility.”  I want to ask him what he means by this.  I also want to explore his journey as a novice filmmaker:  what he considers his biggest challenges and accomplishments.  The text of one of his posts: “I have come to admire what filmmakers do.”  I am wondering what exactly he admires (maybe everything!)  Also, where does he get the energy and drive to mount and sustain a project like this – one which would overwhelm many.  If inclined, you can support Gau's project on the website:  agnihotradocumentary.comI really love the three blog posts he wrote connecting Ayurveda and agnihotra.  His intention was to explore how Ayurveda can help us better understand agnihotra.  Again, “agni” means fire and “hotra” means healing.  He describes how Ayurveda views agni:  agni is the digestive power in our physiology, but also means the power of life, the power to transform.  In Ayurveda, agni is the single most important marker of our personal health.  If agni is balanced, our overall physical health is balanced.  The main agni is jathar agni in Ayurveda and it really is pivotal.  The question is whether this can really help us understand agni's role in nature.  From a Vedic perspective, the microcosm is reflected in the macrocosm and vice versa.  Essentially, this means the human being is a reflection of the ou

My name is Ellen Jean Diederich and I live in Fargo, ND. I have been painting professionally since 1985. My parents encouraged me to pursue my art career and even sold a cow so I could attend a Robert E. Wood workshop in 1979. I have a B.F.A. in Fine Art and a B.A. in Art Education from Minnesota State University, Moorhead. In the last three years of college, I drew portraits and caricatures at multiple locations to pay my bills. My first teaching job was as an elementary art teacher in Pine River, MN which helped me and my enthusiastic students focus on the basics of arts.My childhood started in the city of Wayzata, MN and moved to Staples, MN where we lived on a farm. There, my high school art teachers Rose Edin and Russell Norberg, now both famous artists, provided a substantial start in the arts. Moorhead State balanced out my exposure to many mediums and art history which was very inspiring. The diversity of these lifestyles directed my interest in painting several subjects particularly architecture, flowers, domestic animals and now landscape. In 1985 I moved to Fargo, ND, married Paul Diederich and began teaching adult art education classes and painting full time. The start was rough and it took me a year to establish a working routine. My success rate was low, only one out of ten pieces at first and gradually improved over time. For some reason, I believed my work needed to be published to be successful. With a baby on its way, I started painting stuffed animals for my daughter's room. They were selling as soon as they were done. Because of this success, I decided to create a stuffed animal print so I could move on to other subjects. Karen Lauer helped me develop my first marketing plan for my piece “King of the Blanket” and it was a success. Unfortunately, this labelled me “the teddy bear artist”. All of my life, I had never allowed myself to paint anything cute as I was so serious about my art. The good news was, those teddy bear paintings lit an intimate spark of love into my art that changed everything. As a mother, I kept painting as my children grew. Part-time daycare and babysitters gave me time to paint uninterrupted and the daycare bill was motivating. I worked out at 5:00 am each day before Paul left for work and still follow that routine today. Photographing my children at garden shows and our cats inspired many paintings and eventually my first children's book “Where's Petunia?” This garden adventure with my girls and two cats became a Gold Medal Ben Franklin Award-winning-full-color-hard-cover children's book.In 1988, two of my friends and I drove to Dillman's Lodge in Wisconsin for a week-long watercolour workshop. We realized that together we spent as much money as if had hired a pro to come to Fargo to teach. With a total of 12 painters, we formed the Red River Watercolor Society in 1989 and hired teachers to come to Fargo-Moorhead. RRWS has a different professional artist teach every year and held its first national exhibition in 1994.In 1998 I began reproducing my paintings as Giclée reproductions which look so much like an original it is almost difficult for me to tell the difference. My collectors were pleased and I felt less pressure about the amount of time I was putting into each painting. Because of my interest in architecture, I started painting local scenes. After many requests for cards of my painting “Fargo” and the support of Pride of Dakota and designer Sheyna Laurich; I began publishing my paintings as blank boxed cards.
