Today, I'm sharing a replay of my conversation on The Mental Golf Show with Josh Nichols. This conversation originally went live on July 25, 2024. Together, we unpack how subconscious beliefs, emotional baggage, and unhelpful mental patterns sabotage consistency—and how hypnotherapy provides a rapid path to lasting change. In this episode, you'll learn: The real difference between talk therapy and hypnotherapy Why “scarcity of time” is ruining your focus and enjoyment How visualization mistakes (not just success) can improve performance Why fear of success may be quietly sabotaging your game How old rules you agreed to long ago are still running your life Why emotional regulation is the key to unlocking fast change How to reframe golf as part of life—not something competing against it If you've ever struggled with fear of failure, the pressure to perform, time scarcity, or self-sabotage on the course, this conversation will hit home. You'll walk away with a deeper understanding of how the subconscious mind impacts your game—and what you can do about it. Get your pencils ready and start listening. Instagram: @thegolfhypnotherapist Twitter: @parsoverbogeys Key Takeaways: Hypnosis isn't mind control—it's deep relaxation with a goal. Fear of failure often masks a deeper fear of success. Scarcity of time leads to rushed, low-quality rounds. You can rewire emotional reactions like frustration and anger—they're learned. Visualization is most effective when it includes mistakes and recovery. Talk therapy can be helpful—but hypnotherapy often produces faster results. Your belief in what you're worthy of is the ceiling for your golf performance. Key Quotes: “Hypnosis is meditation with a goal.” “Fear of failure is often really fear of success in disguise.” “You don't need more swing tips—you need to address what's going on between the ears.” “Your subconscious doesn't care if you're successful. It cares if you're safe.” “If you want to make visualization work, you have to include mistakes.” “Anger might have served you as a young golfer—but now it holds you back.” “Golf is part of life—not something competing against it.” Time Stamps: 00:00: Introduction and Background 03:02: The Role of Nutrition in Golf Performance 05:58: Scarcity Mentality in Golf 08:46: Balancing Life and Golf 12:07: Understanding Hypnotherapy 14:57: Hypnotherapy vs. Traditional Therapy 27:15: The Value of Traditional Talk Therapy 30:05: The Speed of Change: Hypnotherapy vs. Traditional Methods 33:17: Breaking Free from Limiting Beliefs 37:23: Fear of Failure and Its Impact on Performance 41:44: The Fear of Success: A Hidden Barrier 45:56: Visualization Techniques for Golf Improvement 49:52: Continuous Growth and the Journey of Self-Discovery 52:56: Setting Ambitious Goals and Embracing the Process

Send us a textWhen Matt Wong started filming golf content with just his iPhone during the pandemic, he couldn't have imagined where his "last creative hurrah" would lead. As the creator behind Golf Perfection, Matt has built a following through authentic course vlogs that showcase both the beauty and challenges of Bay Area golf.During our conversation, Matt reveals the behind-the-scenes techniques he's developed to film quality golf content without disrupting play or annoying fellow golfers. From specialized lightweight equipment to strategic filming approaches, his methods allow him to capture every shot while still maintaining the pace and etiquette that makes golf special. This balancing act between content creation and golf tradition highlights why his videos resonate with viewers seeking realistic course previews rather than staged challenges. For beginner and mid-handicap golfers, Matt offers refreshingly practical advice that contrasts with typical instruction. Rather than obsessing over perfect technique, he advocates understanding your current swing tendencies and using that knowledge strategically on the course. "Play your slice instead of fixing it" becomes a mantra for enjoying the game while gradually improving. This course management philosophy—knowing what your shots typically do rather than what they should do—provides immediate scoring benefits without requiring dramatic swing changes. We also explore golf's evolution through formats like TGL (The Golf League), which brings team-based competition to indoor stadium environments, and discuss predictions for upcoming tournaments. Matt's journey reveals how authentic content can find its audience even in crowded digital spaces, and how the intersection of technology and tradition continues to shape golf's future.Whether you're looking to improve your game, create better golf content, or simply enjoy stories from someone who's found their niche in the golfing world, this episode delivers insights that will enhance your appreciation of this challenging and rewarding sport.Support the showFollow & Join Us! Key Takeaways: The mental game's primary goal is to reduce stress, as stress disrupts motor patterns and prevents you from swinging your best on the course. A growth mindset is critical for improving in golf; believing that improvement is possible fuels the effort needed to achieve your goals. Effective practice involves intention and structure—prioritizing deliberate, focused sessions over marathon practice that leads to burnout. Consistency in effort, even with small, incremental steps, is the foundation for long-term progress in golf and life. Managing your expectations with data-driven insights (e.g., realistic fairway hit percentages) helps avoid frustration and enhances performance. Pre- and post-shot routines, along with slowing down after mistakes, are essential tools for bouncing back from blow-up holes and staying composed. The golfer you are on the course is deeply connected to the human being you are off it—prioritizing physical, mental, and emotional well-being will elevate your performance. Key Quotes: "The whole goal of the mental game is stress is coming—it's going to happen. No matter how good you get, you're going to hit bad shots. The key is figuring out how to calm down and get back to your process as fast as you can." "You have to have a growth mindset—if you don't think you can improve, you won't. But if you believe someone else did it, then you can too." "Do different to get different. If you keep practicing the same way, going through the same motions, and expecting better results, you'll stay stuck. Challenge yourself to do what others aren't willing to do." "Your swing is already there. It's not going to change the day before a tournament. Sometimes the best preparation is resting, eating well, and showing up with a clear and focused mind." "Consistency beats everything. Even if it's a mediocre practice or an okay workout, you're still showing up. Over time, that builds belief and creates real progress." "Having the right expectations is everything. If you think you'll hit every fairway or make every putt, you're setting yourself up for frustration. Focus on playing your best with what you have that day." "You can't separate the golfer from the human being. How you care for yourself emotionally, physically, and mentally off the course directly impacts how you perform on the course." Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. Mismanaged scoring expectations can rob golfers of joy. It's important to set realistic goals based on your practice and play frequency. Reflection after rounds is crucial for improvement. Emotions play a significant role in golf performance. Grit and persistence can help golfers recover from poor rounds. Golf serves as a mirror for personal development and life lessons. Incremental progress is key; quick fixes are often misleading. Finding a balance between enjoyment and seriousness is essential. Creating a supportive environment for yourself on the course is important. Key Quotes: "Golf is a beautiful, powerful personal development tool." “Experience is so crucial in this game because golf's kind of a bizarre activity with all the things that can take place on the course and you just have to be accepting and prepared for all of that.” "Incremental progress is the key to golf." “You know, sometimes you need to take a big step backwards, be like, you know, no matter what happens here, things are going to be okay. I'm going to go home. I think about my wife and kids, like they'll won't care that much in either direction.” "You can't expect to play this game and not have emotions." “Yeah, information, yeah, information isn't the issue anymore. Yeah, it's a mindset problem. It's a habit problem, discipline.” Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. In today's episode, I'll recap… Navigating a week of significant lower back pain and the decision to take 72 hours off from both the gym and touching a golf club. Calling a last-minute audible on Friday morning to practice on the range versus try and play a round of 18. Playing a new course - from the blue tees - and learning how to play golf in the mud. Squeezing a last-minute round of golf on before Hurricane Milton - and being the only golfer out there. My next goal… Start listening. Also, here's a heads-up: I updated my Instagram tag to @thegolfhypnotherapist. P.S. If you're interested in learning more about how mindset coaching and hypnotherapy can help you get unstuck from the proverbial bunker of poor performance on the course and in your business, click here to schedule a coaching discovery call with me. Key Points: I brought a good attitude and plenty of snacks. The automaticity in my swing just clicked. I hit 10 fairways and was lethal off the tee. The mud made it difficult to score well. I played 18 holes in three hours, it was incredible. I shot an 87, my new low round to date. I need to repeat this performance in a competitive setting. The mental game is crucial for golf success. I have been dreaming about breaking 90 for months. Future goals include tournament golf and fatherhood. Key Quotes: “There's no need for this. You should not be topping balls or chunking shots. You know what to do. Lock it up and lock it in.” “I just fucking striped my nine. My nine carried at least 165, which is just new for me. Ended up making a really good putt to save bogey there.” “So I put a lot of time in with Melvin and on my own dialing in my swing with the five wood, three wood and the driver and even some of my long irons as well. So this was the best off the tee box I had done. But the problem for me was that second shot.” Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. Andy Matthews is a former Professional Golfer and a winner on the Mackenzie (Canadian) Tour. He is now a Pilot, and the Director of Golf Performance for Neuropeak Pro and he joins us to talk about the importance of good breathing and its influence on overall health, well-being, stress reduction and golf performance. Andy delves into Precision (Diaphragmatic) Breathing and how it can can help you (1) Relax, (2) Improve Muscle Function and prevent strain during exercise, (3) Increase Blood Oxygen levels, (4) Make it easier for your Body to Release Gas Waste from your Lungs, (5) Reduce Blood Pressure and (6) Lower Heart Rate. As part of the Precision Breathing discussion Andy also contrasts Nasal and Mouth Breathing and their commensurate effects on the Nervous System. He also talks about how proper breathing can improve Heart Rate Variability (HRV) which is a function of a balanced Autonomic Nervous System. A higher HRV can lead to better Sleep, Enhanced Cognitive Performance, Increased Adaptability and Resiliency and a Better Stress Response. All of these factors lead to better performance on and off the golf course and Andy talks about how Intentional Breathing can lead to an improved Physiological state and the ability to prepare for both powerful Drives and deft touch Greenside shots. You have heard countless PGA TOUR professionals and coaches talk about breathing properly under pressure. Thanks to Andy Matthews, and the Neuropeak Pro NTel Belt, you can know how to do so, practice properly and chart your improvement.
