World War, round one. I want to live through this. If I can't be the guy behind the machine gun, let's see. Rifle. BAR's too heavy. SMLE. ten rounds trumps five, and can be, with practice, fired fast. Sights not as good as the Mk IV, but by the time we get to wwii, there are other options. Hand gun: good old 1911. Subgun -- was the Thompson available yet? Shotgun: not expert at all, but a 12 gauge pump with a big bayonet seems like a good thing to have on hand. Trench Broom. I think I'd also want a big old Bowie style knife as well. World War, round two, the rematch. handgun. More good options by then, but I think I'll stick with the 1911, this time in A1 configuration. Rifle, Garand, seeing as I probably couldn't get a Sturmgewehr. Subgun -- "Grease Gun" .45. Shotgun -- whatever 12 gauge pump is available, bayonet not needed, as we're not doing trench warfare. Big Bowie knife again -- too useful, less likely to be used in combat. Alternate history what if: What if low residue smokeless powder had been developed and introduced 50 years earlier, in the 1840s instead of the 1890s. Would we have seen early introduction of auto loading firearms, or would revolvers and manual repeaters continue to dominate into the 20th century? I suspect "yes, eventually, but not an immediate slamdunk." It would have made the US Civil War interesting. —-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Russell: Hi gents, There is one movie where the gun mistakes bother me so badly. It's the movie Standoff staring Laurence Fishburne and Thomas Jane. There is a scene where they discuss the attributes of each other's weapon. Fishburne's character brags about being armed with a 45. The gun is a Beretta 92! Jane's character is armed with a single shot shotgun in 20ga. Which Fishburne's character says isn't very powerful and has no range. Funny… The majority of the movie takes place in a house. Even worse this “20ga” is being loaded with RED shells. This scene ruined the entire movie for me. If they would have left out or changed the dialogue about the guns. Would have been a totally decent enough movie. Keep the shows coming, Russell —---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Keith: Was watching The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Takes place in the Civil War. Lots of metallic cartridge guns. Not even hiding it. Tuco shoots from the bathtub. Not going to do that with black powder. Also, Blondie unloaded Tuco's gun before the showdown. The Army has Gatling guns. I think they were 45/70s. —------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Listener David: WW1 Loadout: I figure the best way is to split these over multiple emails. So sorry if that makes for a ton of reading! I am assuming logistics for all the crazy calibers are all solved. My main rifle is an M1917 Enfield, officially the "United States Rifle, cal .30, Model of 1917". Guess the guys got paid by the character to name stuff back then. For a carbine-ish choice, I am picking the Short Magazine fed Lee Enfield Mark 3. That just seems like a super handy gun to have inside cramped trenches. My shotgun is an M1897 trench gun with a sword bayonet. If the buckshot doesn't do the trick, I get spear practice (you know, as a little treat.) The machine gun splits into light and heavy. For light, I am picking the Madsen light machine gun and the Gatling gun gets the nod for heavy work. My pistol choice is nothing fancy, the P08 Luger, WW2 Loadout: Here is my idea for the WW2 load out.Same as before, magic logistics mean plenty of parts and ammo. My WW2 rifle is the M1941 Johnson rifle. Mainly because the Garand is too heavy for anyone to choose on purpose to schlep around. I am swapping a submachine gun for the carbine. That would be the PPSh-41 because I am achieving peace through overwhelming rate of fire. My shotgun is the Browning Auto 5. It's WW2, why are we racking slides like unwashed peasants? Machine gun again gets split into light and heavy. Light this time is the M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle, Heavy duty goes to the venerable M2 Browning because to Hell with you and whatever you are hiding behind! My sidearm choice is the Roth-Steyr M1907. It has more rounds than the 1911 and P38, it gets bonus points for looking weird also! (We have the rest of your emails David, but we want to save them for a future show when we have more entries!) —---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Xander– WWII loadout: USS Nimitz (in honor of December 7) Or: Liberator pistol, Mauser C96 pistol, Mauser Karabiner rifle Wrap Up: Don't forget to shop Brownells using our affiliate link! The morning of January 22, 1879, dawned with a deceptive, stillness across Zululand masking the fact that over 45,000 men were in motion across a 200 kilometer front, each group operating in a vacuum of information that would, by sunset, shatter the British Victorian ego. At the coast, Colonel Charles Pearson's Column No. 1 represented the textbook invasion. His force was a heavy, industrial machine led by the 3rd Foot regiment, the Buffs, along with the 99th Regiment, and the Naval Brigade dragging their heavy Gatling guns and artillery. By 5:00 AM, the 5000 strong column was already a dusty serpent stretching more than 8 kilometers back toward the Tugela River. Pearson's scouts were a mix of the Natal Native Contingent and European volunteers who pushed through the tall grass toward the Nyezane River. They were being observed on Wombane mountain by the uDududu, iMbube, and isigQu regiments - 6,000 warriors under the command of Godide kaNdlela. Wombande mountain lay on the wagon trail between Gingingdlovu on the coastal flats, and Eshowe where Pearson was hoping to setup a main base at the abandoned Norwegian mission station before pushing on to ONdini and Cetshwayo's HQ. The Zulu plan was traditional, await in complete stillness on the high-ground then sweep in for a surprise ambush. Pearson's advance guard crossed the Nyezane River and crossed over at 7.30am. Thick bush grew all around, the cavalry was reconnoitering and saw nothing. Vedettes, or mounted guards, were placed to keep an eye out for the Zulu army. Pearson's main party reached the knoll selected for the first stop at around 8am, and the men began to outspan their oxen for a late breakfast. As the laager was being formed up, a party of the Natal Native Contingent who scouted ahead attracted fire from Zulu snipers. The latest Zulu tactic which would also be repeated at Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift, and as Evelyn Wood would report later from Hlobane mountain - a combination of heavy fire from high ground in support of a surging attack by warriors on foot. The road was a now completely commanded by Godide, along with the all important high ground and as his snipers fired non-stop, the Zulu horns swept towards the exposed British column. Naval officer Midshipman Lewis Coker had the honor of commanding the first Gatling gun to be used in combat by British troops. Pearson recognized the value of this machine gun and he ordered Coker to take up a position opposite the advancing Zulu. Coker fired off 300 rounds, and the Zulu attack shuddered and halted — then the sound of the rockets fiendishly shrieking led to a general withdrawal. Hart continued advancing on the retreating Zulu when one of the older warriors, his oiled head ring glistening in the morning sun, stopped and turned, fell to one knee in a classic rifleman's position, took careful aim and fired — but missed. Then he bolted away. Hart noted the conventional approach this older warrior had taken. He'd been trained in the finer arts of fire and movement. 200 kilometers to the north of Pearson near the modern town of Vryheid, Colonel Evelyn Wood who led the left column of the British triple column invasion, was preparing for his morning assault atop the Zungwini Mountain. Wood was by far the most experienced and therefore pragmatic of the British commanders. He had the good fortune of commanding "Flying Column," the vast majority of his men were mounted. The force was centered on the 13th and 90th Light Infantry and the formidable Frontier Light Horse under Redvers Buller. It was in the centre of the three pronged British attack where the day of skop, skiet and donner would change history. This was at the foot of the Sphinx-like crag of Isandlwana where Chelmsford's Second Column hunkered down.
In 1983, Stanislav Petrov, a Soviet lieutenant colonel, sat in a bunker watching a red screen flash “MISSILE LAUNCH.” Protocol demanded he report it to superiors, which would very likely trigger a retaliatory nuclear strike. Petrov didn't. He reasoned that if the US were actually attacking, they wouldn't fire just 5 missiles — they'd empty the silos. He bet the fate of the world on a hunch that his machine was broken. He was right.Paul Scharre, the former Army Ranger who led the Pentagon team that wrote the US military's first policy on autonomous weapons, has a question: What would an AI have done in Petrov's shoes? Would an AI system have been flexible and wise enough to make the same judgement? Or would it immediately launch a counterattack?Paul joins host Luisa Rodriguez to explain why we are hurtling toward a “battlefield singularity” — a tipping point where AI increasingly replaces humans in much of the military, changing the way war is fought with speed and complexity that outpaces humans' ability to keep up.Links to learn more, video, and full transcript: https://80k.info/psMilitaries don't necessarily want to take humans out of the loop. But Paul argues that the competitive pressure of warfare creates a “use it or lose it” dynamic. As former Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work put it: “If our competitors go to Terminators, and their decisions are bad, but they're faster, how would we respond?”Once that line is crossed, Paul warns we might enter an era of “flash wars” — conflicts that spiral out of control as quickly and inexplicably as a flash crash in the stock market, with no way for humans to call a timeout. In this episode, Paul and Luisa dissect what this future looks like:Swarming warfare: Why the future isn't just better drones, but thousands of cheap, autonomous agents coordinating like a hive mind to overwhelm defences. The Gatling gun cautionary tale: The inventor of the Gatling gun thought automating fire would reduce the number of soldiers needed, saving lives. Instead, it made war significantly deadlier. Paul argues AI automation could do the same, increasing lethality rather than creating “bloodless” robot wars. The cyber frontier: While robots have physical limits, Paul argues cyberwarfare is already at the point where AI can act faster than human defenders, leading to intelligent malware that evolves and adapts like a biological virus. The US-China “adoption race”: Paul rejects the idea that the US and China are in a spending arms race (AI is barely 1% of the DoD budget). Instead, it's a race of organisational adoption — one where the US has massive advantages in talent and chips, but struggles with bureaucratic inertia that might not be a problem for an autocratic country.Paul also shares a personal story from his time as a sniper in Afghanistan — watching a potential target through his scope — that fundamentally shaped his view on why human judgement, with all its flaws, is the only thing keeping war from losing its humanity entirely. This episode was recorded on October 23-24, 2025.Chapters:Cold open (00:00:00)Who's Paul Scharre? We break down the thinking behind Gatling Studio, a new companion tool designed to make recording, filtering, correlating, and debugging performance tests dramatically easier. Whether you're a developer, SDET, or automation engineer, you'll learn: How to onboard quickly into performance testing—even without deep expertise Why Gatling Studio offers a smoother way to record traffic and craft tests Where AI is already improving load test authoring How teams can shift-left performance insights and catch issues earlier What's coming next as Gatling expands its developer experience and enterprise platform If you've been meaning to start performance testing—or scale it beyond one performance engineer—this episode will give you the clarity and confidence to begin.
Japan's New PM and Existential Threat of Taiwan Conflict Guest: Lance Gatling Lance Gatling discussed Japan's new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, who has adopted a notably hawkish position towards China, stating that a blockade or threat against Taiwan could be interpreted as an existential threat to Japan, allowing the possibility of engaging in collective defense with allies like the U.S. or Philippines, and amid rising tensions and China's attempts to inflict economic damage, Takaichi is moving to accelerate the doubling of Japan's defense procurement budget, while the U.S. withdrawal of the mobile Typhoon missile system was criticized as strategically counterproductive during this critical moment. 1904 PORT ARTHUR
PREVIEW Japanese PM Sai Links Taiwan Blockade to Existential Threat, Enabling Collective Defense. Lance Gatlingdiscusses Japanese Prime Minister Takahichi Sai's comments regarding collective defense concerning Taiwan. This concept, enabled by a 2015 law, allows Japan to partner with other nations for national security purposes. Sai suggested that if Taiwan is threatened or blockaded, it could be construed as an existential threat against Japan. Her unscripted remarks, made during a parliamentary budget committee meeting, implied that Japan might engage in collective defense under those circumstances. Guest: Lance Gatling. 1942 MANILA
MDJ Script/ Top Stories for October 29th Publish Date: October 29th Commercial: From the BG Ad Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Wednesday, October 29th and Happy Birthday to Richard Dryfuess I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal 2025 Smyrna Veterans Day Ceremony MUST Ministries opens clinic, offering affordable medical care Metro Atlanta transit payment system refresh coming soon All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: INGLES 3 STORY 1: 2025 Smyrna Veterans Day Ceremony The 2025 Smyrna Veterans Day Ceremony kicks off at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at the Veterans Memorial on King Street. It’s free—parking too—and open to everyone. If it rains? No problem, they’ll move it to the Smyrna Community Center. This year’s keynote speaker is retired U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. David “Shark” Waldrop, a man with stories that sound straight out of a movie. Back in 1967, flying an F-105 Thunderchief over North Vietnam, Waldrop chased down MiG-17s at MACH 1.3, dodged missiles, and took out enemy fighters with nerves of steel and a 20mm Gatling gun. Waldrop flew 105 combat missions, survived being shot down, and earned three Silver Stars, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, and 12 Air Medals. After the Air Force, he spent 32 years flying for Delta and even flew F-8 Crusaders as a Marine reservist. He’s a Nashville native, now living in Cobb County with his wife, Sue, and their two grown sons. Don’t miss the chance to hear his incredible story. STORY 2: MUST Ministries opens clinic, offering affordable medical care MUST Ministries just took a big step forward: on-site health care. On Oct. 1, the nonprofit opened the MUST Care Clinic, offering affordable—or even free—primary and behavioral health care. “Our ‘why’ is simple,” said MUST CEO Ike Reighard at the ribbon cutting. “We’re here to serve our neighbors in need.” The clinic, staffed by Eastchester Family Services, replaces their mobile medical unit with a permanent space, open three days a week. In just 10 days, they’ve already treated 65 people. MUST raised $1.4 million to open the clinic but needs $600,000 annually to keep it running. The clinic, located at 1260 Cobb Parkway North, is open Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. STORY 3: Metro Atlanta transit payment system refresh coming soon Heading downtown for a game or concert? If you’re taking MARTA, get ready for some changes—fare gates are getting a 21st-century upgrade. MARTA announced Monday it’s rolling out new contactless fare equipment. The new gates will be easier to use (no more fumbling with cards), and a smartphone app is on the way, letting riders pay with a mobile wallet. Finally. The “Better Breeze” system will also expand to CobbLinc and Ride Gwinnett soon. But don’t toss your old Breeze card just yet—MARTA says the full switch won’t happen until spring. Fares? Still $2.50. “We’re keeping prices steady, but the system? Long overdue for an upgrade,” said MARTA Interim CEO Jonathan Hunt. Oh, and in a few years, you might not even need a wallet at all. Thanks to a new Georgia law, digital driver’s licenses are coming, though police have until 2027 to get the tech to scan them. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: INGLES 3 STORY 4: KSU associate professor leads effort to strengthen juvenile justice programs through data analysis Every year, hundreds of kids leave Georgia’s juvenile justice system, hoping for a fresh start. But staying on that path? That’s the hard part. Kennesaw State’s Austin Brown is tackling it head-on with the Annual Recidivism Report, funded by a $62,000 grant from the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice. Brown’s team digs into the data—messy, complicated, real-world data—to figure out what’s working and what’s not. “These aren’t just numbers,” Brown said. “They’re kids. Real kids with real stories.” One big takeaway? The gap between male and female recidivism rates is shrinking, a sign that programs targeting young men are making a difference. For Brown, it’s not just about stats—it’s about second chances. STORY 5: All Saints’ Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Marietta First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, over on Church Street, is inviting the community to join them for All Saints’ Sunday on Nov. 2 in the Great Hall. All Saints’ Day started as a way to honor early Christian martyrs, but over the centuries, it’s become a time to remember anyone whose faith has shaped our lives. Worship services are at 8:30 and 11 a.m., with gratitude and reflection at the heart of it all. Then, from 5 to 6 p.m., there’s a special concert and remembrance service led by Rev. Joe Evans and the Chancel Choir. Expect music selections from Dolly Parton, John Rutter, and Craig Courtney, plus a chance to add loved ones’ names to a prayer weave—a beautiful symbol of love’s lasting connection. Questions? Reach out to Kelly Dewar at kellydewar@fpcmarietta.org or 770-427-0293. Break: STORY 6: Police: Marietta man killed in shooting involving Smyrna police died of self-inflicted wound A Marietta man who died after a confrontation with Smyrna police last Friday morning was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Smyrna Police. Darrick Desawn Rooks, 46, was found dead in a stolen U-Haul truck after a traffic stop near Concord Road and McClinden Avenue. Initially, the GBI reported that a gunshot was fired from the U-Haul, prompting officers to return fire. However, Smyrna police later clarified that Rooks’ fatal injury was self-inflicted, a conclusion confirmed by the Cobb County Medical Examiner. No officers were hurt. The GBI is still investigating, with findings to be reviewed by the Cobb County District Attorney. STORY 7: SNAP benefits to halt Nov. 1 due to government shutdown Starting Nov. 1, SNAP benefits won’t be available if the federal government shutdown drags on, the Georgia Department of Human Services announced Friday. SNAP, which is fully funded by Congress, relies on federal dollars—money that’s now tied up. The USDA told state officials there’s not enough funding to cover November benefits. For now, recipients can still use whatever’s left on their EBT cards, but after Nov. 1? Those cards won’t work. “Plan ahead,” Human Services urged. “Shop for what you need now.” Check balances at connectebt.com or the mobile app. And don’t submit duplicate applications—it won’t speed things up. We’ll have closing comments after this. Break: INGLES 3 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Trump Demands Higher Defense Spending from New Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi. Lance Gatling reports on President Trump's visit to Tokyo and his meeting with the new Prime Minister, Takaichi. Trump is expected to demand increased defense spending. Takaichi plans to accelerate doubling the defense budget to 2% of GDP. A major concern is Trump asking Japan to stop buying energy from Russia, which supplies Japanese LNG. Takaichi enjoys surprisingly strong domestic support. 1958
Analyzing Japan's New Hawkish Prime Minister and the Defense Budget Goal Lance Gatling Lance Gatling analyzes Japan's new Prime Minister, Takayoshi Sado, the nation's first female leader, focusing on her hawkish stance and ambitious defense goals. Sado has committed to raising Japan's defense budget to five percent of GDP, a significant increase that reflects growing security concerns and regional tensions. However, Gatling notes that achieving this goal presents substantial challenges, as the current massive budget is already fully allocated. This would require either borrowing, reallocation, or difficult trade-offs between existing programs, and there remains serious doubt about whether the military can effectively absorb, train personnel for, and maintain such a dramatic increase.

Samuel Colt's name is forever linked to the company he founded and the revolver he called the “Peacemaker.” Born in Connecticut in 1814, he was steeped in America's gun culture from an early age. His grandfather had served in George Washington's army, and Samuel inherited an old flintlock pistol from the family hero when he was only six. At the age of fifteen, while working in his father's textile plant, he built a galvanic cell (basically an early battery) and used it to set off explosives beneath the surface of a nearby pond during the Fourth of July. He continued to experiment with chemicals and combustion—as many young men do—and became fascinated by inventors' work to create a firearm that could shoot more than bullets before needing to reload.Join us as we teach you about Samuel Colt, Richard Gatling, and John Browning. In this episode, you'll learn about their work, their impact on history, and how their names are culturally relevant - beyond the brand - in our world today.

Listener Chris: Greetings all y'all from the Secret City, If I somehow managed to win a $10 Million lottery my three gun choices would be: 1) The Mars Automatic Pistol in .45 Mars Long Case. 2) Suomi KP/-31 (Or a PPSh-41, I'm not picky) 3) and finally so I could commute to my own personal range and land of general tomfoolery I would have a Vespa 150 TAP. I may not be fast but the road ahead will always be clear. Thank you all for the years of entertainment and laughter. Keep your sticks on the ice. —————— Listener Chuck: "If I won the lottery, there would be signs..." Assume I'm some place where all this cool stuff is legal. Or, I'm rich, I can buy a measure of privacy. 1) The Anderson Wheeler modern clone of the break top Webley, 7 shot .357. I have no idea if any of those were ever actually made. (That's actually about it. Not thinking of anything else exotic right now.) —————————————— Listener Phil: Hello, My Neuvo-Riche Millionaire List Smith & Wesson .357 Registered Magnum, 3 ½” or 4”, like-new condition. Hamilton Bowen M1917 Redhawk in .50AE. Essentially a Redhawk done up in a manner reminiscent of the Smith 1917. Lugerman P-2020 Luger in .45 ACP. Cheat Pick- Colt Bulldog, model 1877 Gatling gun, all brass, 45-70. With all the furniture, boxes and doo-dads and what not. I would call it Rooster. And if I were to win in real life, I dream about a bank of CNC machines as seen in the TFB video of the Manhurin factory and a group of talented individuals who then go down my list of small- batch runs of Mauser C96, Terriers, Merwin & Hulbert, HK M13, P08, 1917's, Smythons, Trejos. Meanwhile I'll be scouring the country for plans to that Detonics Top-Break! Ah, dreams ——————————— Listener Rob: Here are my selections , Sticking to handguns unlike some folks, but may have lost count a little Purchase the custom s&w revolver Jerry Miculek used to set record of 6 plates in 1.88 seconds. Would likely take big sum of money to the family, would own for one year, train and take classes extensively to see how close I can get to the record. (Likely not close at all, but the chase would be fun) Then, put for auction and market the hell Out of it with all proceeds to promote youth shooting sports along with anything the JM family wants to support, in equal parts.
In this episode…What does it really mean to be free in your business, and in your life?In this episode, I talk with Jelisha Gatling, therapist and business coach, about the bold and brave steps she took to create the life she truly wanted. Episode #342: Dhammaloka, born Laurence Carroll in Dublin around 1856, was a unique figure in the history of Buddhism and anti-colonial resistance. Much of what we know today about Dhammaloka comes from Laurence Cox, Alicia Turner, and Brian Bocking in “The Irish Buddhist.” Carroll left Ireland as a teenager, becoming a sailor and tramp, living on the margins of society. These experiences shaped his adaptability and led to his connection with Buddhism when he arrived in Burma. Unlike other Europeans, Laurence was not part of the elite—he was a working-class man who resonated deeply with Buddhist principles. Rangoon's diverse environment enabled Laurence to align with marginalized communities resisting colonial rule. Eventually, he ordained as a monk Tavoy Monastery in Rangoon under the name U Dhammaloka. The monastery was aligned with the Thudhamma sect, known for its strict adherence to the Vinaya and social engagement. This gave Dhammaloka an opportunity for both a spiritual rebirth from his alcohol addiction, as well as a connection to the emerging, pan-Asian Buddhist movement. His commitment to the monastic life became a powerful personal and political act. Dhammaloka's activism brought him into direct conflict with British authorities. He was placed under surveillance, charged with sedition, and his trial in Rangoon showed his symbolic role in anti-colonial resistance. Despite attempts to suppress him, his legacy endured. Dhammaloka also fiercely opposed Western missionaries, viewing their work as part of colonial domination. He famously said, “The British came with the Bible, the Gatling gun, and the whiskey bottle,” highlighting colonialism's cultural and territorial aims. Carroll's journey—from tramp to influential monk—reminds us of courage, solidarity, and the enduring desire for justice.

All manner of things are going on — thanks to those folks out there who've been sending me notes and support, much appreciated. Episode 220 deals with the start of the Transvaal Civil War, and quite a bit about Paul Kruger's early life. The American civil war was raging in 1862, and there's nothing like a war to trigger innovation — if you excuse the pun. Richard Jordan Gatling patented his terrifying Gatling gun featuring multiple rotating barrels driven by a hand crank, allowing operators to unleash a relentless hailstorm of bullets—up to several hundred rounds per minute. Its distinctive mechanical whirr echoed across battlefields, marking a chilling shift toward modern, industrialized warfare. While undoubtedly efficient, the Gatling gun also embodied a grim reality: the age when technology would reshape combat forever had arrived. Just in time to cause more chaos in the already bloody American Civil War. What is less known these days is that there was another Civil War involving descendants of Europeans, and this was going on in South Africa. The AmaZulu had just wrapped up their own recent Civil War as you've heard. All manner of brutal and uncivil conduct marked this period in South African history, as neighbour turned against neighbour and the bonds of society frayed. The Boer Republics had been riven by conflict since the days of the Voortrekkers, but in 1862 perhaps inspired in part by the American civil War, the Boer Republics went from squabbling to skirmishing. There's no proof that the carnage of the United States directly influenced South Africa, but there is proof that the Boers knew about it. Later, during the apartheid period of National Party Rule, this Transvaal Civil War was deposited in historical file 13, almost expunged, because it contradicted the prevailing political ideology where it was all the whites against all the blacks. Anything that detracted from this nationalist agenda was taboo. The modern architects of African nationalism, too, often reshape the past to suit their narratives, discarding inconvenient histories into their own version of "file 13."Compared to the carnage in America, where an estimated 750 000 people died, the South African version was far less bloody. A few dozen dead and wounded. A handful of skirmishes was the real effect, which took place in what is now Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the North West Province - but at the same time as the American Civil War which ran from 1861 to 1865. The Transvaal Civil War started in 1862 and ended in 1864. While less gory, it was emblematic of the frontier streak embedded in the first generation descendants of the Voortrekkers. According to the constitution of the Republic, the Hervormde Church was the state church. Its members alone were entitled to exercise any influence in public affairs. Whoever was not a member of the Hervormde Church was not a fully-qualified burgher. Paul Kruger belonged to the Christelljk-Gereformeerde Kerk founded recently, in 1859, by Dr. Postma, at Rustenburg. This church became known in South Africa as the Dopper, or partly Canting Church. The derivation of the word Dopper is not completely clear, but it was believed to have come from the word dop, a damper or extinguisher for putting out Candles.
