In the thrilling conclusion of the RPGBOT.Pulp Cthulhu Actual Play, our heroes discover that Luck points are real, sanity is optional, and jetpacks are — scientifically speaking — extremely explosive plot devices. Bjorn steals the Necronomicon with telekinesis, Murray forgets who he is, everyone falls in love with the villain thanks to eldritch karaoke mind control, and the final boss fight is resolved using the timeless tactical doctrine of: "What if we shot the jetpack?" Featuring heroic sacrifice, catastrophic math, spontaneous dismemberment, and a helicopter extraction that arrives precisely when pulp cinema demands it — this episode delivers the important lesson that Call of Cthulhu isn't about surviving intact. It's about surviving spectacularly. Show Notes The finale opens with table banter and a brief plug for ongoing Pulp Cthulhu play opportunities before the Keeper resets the stage and reviews key mechanics — including luck recovery, spending luck for survival, and sanity system nuances. The players regain luck and receive a reminder of how it can modify rolls, negate damage, or even prevent death — rules that soon prove critical. A sanity check against newly transformed ghast enemies immediately escalates tension. Randall's character loses significant sanity and enters a bout of insanity, gaining amnesia and temporarily forgetting context and equipment while acquiring an "insane talent" that grants unusual resilience to pain. This mechanical disruption reinforces Call of Cthulhu's psychological stakes and introduces roleplay chaos at the outset of combat. Combat begins in the ritual chamber where Scarlet Arachnus attempts to complete her summoning. Gunfire exchanges with the ghasts while Arachnus deflects harm through magic. Randall lands a devastating critical hit on one creature, while Tyler pivots toward objective play — targeting the ritual itself. The Necronomicon becomes the center of the encounter as telekinesis is used to wrest control of the artifact from the villain, disrupting her casting momentum. The encounter spikes in complexity when Arachnus unleashes Siren Song, charming allies and nearly turning the party against itself. Iowa succumbs completely, while Tyler resists. Surrounded and nearly dead, Tyler resorts to a desperate solution — coordinating with Randall's jetpack maneuver. The resulting detonation obliterates Arachnus and the ghasts, collapses magical support sustaining the enemies, and nearly kills the party in the process. Randall survives only by spending luck to avoid certain death. After the blast, the ritual collapses, the remaining threats dissolve, and the survivors secure the artifact. Extraction arrives via helicopter — a fitting pulp cinematic conclusion — as the buried ruins vanish beneath the sand, ensuring their secrets remain hidden. The episode closes with post-session reflections on system feel and character impact, cementing the adventure as a chaotic but successful demonstration of Pulp Cthulhu's tone and mechanics. Key Takeaways Luck mechanics are central survival tools and dramatically influence outcomes Sanity loss meaningfully alters gameplay through narrative and mechanical disruption Insanity effects can produce both hindrance and unexpected advantages Objective-focused play (stealing the artifact) can end encounters faster than damage trading Mind-control effects reinforce Mythos horror stakes beyond physical threats Pulp tone encourages cinematic risk and heroic sacrifice Improvisation and environment use can resolve otherwise lethal encounters Narrative pacing culminates in high-stakes chaos followed by cinematic resolution Actual Play effectively demonstrates mechanics through emergent storytelling The finale showcases how Call of Cthulhu balances horror tension with pulp heroics Welcome to the RPGBOT Podcast. Lauren Karr is a Kansas City–based singer, songwriter who blends raw emotion with thoughtful lyricism. Her music weaves together stories of resilience, healing, and truth—reflecting both her personal journey and a deep desire to connect with others. Through her LCK Studios, Lauren is building a body of work rooted in authenticity, independence, and heart. Lauren recently reached out to me to help get the word outabout a newly penned and recorded song “Desolation”. We got together on a recent Saturday on the radio during my monthly residency on KKFI's Siren Song. I appreciate it so much when artists like Lauren are willing to be vulnerable and share their most personal creations on the 100,000 watt blowtorch of creative insanity that is community radio. As of late 2025, early 2026 Lauren is building out a newwebsite. For now you can find her on Reverbnation and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/laurenckarr

Today I want to talk about the gift of a gentle start—especially for Highly Sensitive People. No rushing into the new year. No reinventing yourself with "New Year, New You!" I love hosting Siren Song once a month on a Saturday onKKFI. The focus, regardless of genre, is on female voices and songwriting telling the stories of women's lives. Kansas City based songwriter Jillian Riscoe reached out to me via email about her Ancient History EP project. We scheduleda date on Siren Song for a live performance. The Midwest winter weather turned ugly on the appointed day so wepivoted to a phone conversation followed up a couple of tunes from the EP.Singing and performing since the age of 7 in country, rock and pop line ups Jillian has toured and performed across the United States, including at the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) show, major sporting events and teams like the KC Royals and KC Current, the GrammyMuseum Music Revolution Project, and the CDBaby DIY Musician's Conference. She has received regional music awards, secured national radio airplay, has been featured on regional TV and opened for international touring artists & bands. Now concentrating on leading the lyrical life as a songwriter and splitting her time between KansasCity & Nashville, Jillian is always on the road, bringing the music with her. Enjoy this introduction to Jillian Riscoe!

DEFENDANT: The Hero of Time EVIDENCE: Siren Song Merlot/Syrah blend SCENE OF THE CRIME: Hyrule -- Hey friend — pop a cork and get comfy. In this episode of True Crime Against Wine we pivoted (blame the internet and a mis-shipped bottle) and ended up sipping a lush Merlot-Syrah blend from Siren Song while getting delightfully nerdy about The Legend of Zelda. Expect giggles, throwback gaming stories, and super honest wine notes — think plush blackberries, juicy plum, and a grown-up juice-box vibe that's dangerously drinkable. We dive into Zelda's origins (shoutout to Miyamoto and Tezuka), reminisce about Ocarina of Time demos at the mall, and debate favorite entries like Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild. There's talk about iconic villains (Ganon, of course), the weirdly existential Link's Awakening plot, cult-fave enemies (stalfos!), and why Link's silent-hero design is pure genius for player immersion. Also: a brief side-eye at 900-number culture, a few messy sibling stories, and absolutely too many sips of wine. If you're into cozy chats about wine, gaming lore, and dumb personal anecdotes, this one's for you. Cheers — it's dangerous to go alone, so bring a friend (and maybe another bottle).

The book of Revelation sheds light on some deeply ingrained lies in this world. As Pastor Ricky points out today, Revelation speaks of the ways the world promises to fulfill us but the truth is the world can't deliver on these promises and that genuine fulfillment for now, and all eternity, can only be found in Jesus Christ. True joy doesn't come by indulging our flesh but by dying to it and pursuing Christ instead. He's the one that satisfies us and in the end, the corrupt world will only experience His judgment.
The world offers us what it can't deliver. No matter what society tells us will bring satisfaction, it never lasts. This is one of the points that Pastor Ricky makes today as he teaches from the book of Revelation. Ultimately, God will judge the world. Sometimes it seems like people get away with doing wicked things but the truth is that God will bring justice and while many people will reject God and choose to indulge in their flesh, thinking that this is going to bring fulfillment only leads them to destruction.
Kansas City based songwriter Amy Ward responded to a call to action to submit a proposed theme song to celebrate the 15th anniversary for my Tasty Brew Music Radio Show. Although, like Tica Felise from our last Tasty Brew Music Podcast episode, I did not ultimately choose Amy's submission, I thought her offering compelling enough to want to know more about her music. I brought her into the radio station one Saturday Morning asI hosted the women-centric program “Siren Song.” As you will learn in this conversation, Ward often prepares songs for Sync Licensing, achieving hundreds of song placements on prime TV, Day Time TV, Major Motion Pictures and Independent Films. She has performed at renowned venues like Madison Square Garden, Kauffman Stadium and T-Mobile Center, as well as recognition on Fox 25 Boston and ABC's KMBC KansasCity. In films and television, she contributes as a songwriter, singer, and producer, including placement on Netflix progamming, and tv programs like Say Yes to the Dress, NCIS, General Hospital, Young & the Restless, toname a few.On the horizon, Amy lands two songs in the upcoming film,Viral - directed by Blair Underwood and her first song in an animated film , A Tooth Fairy Tale-in theaters and streaming now. Enjoy this conversation with music samplings from the AmyWard catalogue!Photo Credit: Hilary Fuller
As Pastor Ricky teaches from the book of Revelation today, he shows us how these passages are relevant for us. Much of the symbolism of Revelation seems to be referencing ancient civilizations as well as civilizations in the last days but it also refers to civilizations in our day. The warnings about Babylon are simultaneously warnings to Christians in the 1st century, in the 21st century, and in the future. The point is, we need to take heed of these warnings rather than passing them off as wisdom for somebody else.

Look, Christopher and Eric love DATELINE as much as the next true crime junkie. But sometimes the show's rush to get an episode on the air can lead to a rush to judgment. That's their concern with a recent episode entitled "Siren Song", the seventieth episode of their thirtieth – that's right, thirtieth! – season. TV show detectives love to say it's always, always, always the husband. Or boyfriend. Or fiancé. But is that really the case in the strange disappearance of Sarm Heslop, who vanished from her boyfriend's luxury catamaran off the coast of the US Virgin Islands in the hours before dawn? COVID kept her friends and loved ones from joining the search and now they fear the local authorities let the most likely suspect slip through their fingers.

"Senate Weighs Investing $120 Billion in Science to Counter China," trumpeted The New York Times in 2021. "A New Economic Patriotism Can Help Unite Our Divided Congress," argued Newsweek in 2023. "US cedes ground to China with ‘self-inflicted wound' of USAid shutdown, analysts say," cautioned The Guardian in 2025. In recent years, we've been exposed to the latest version of a centuries-old geopolitical message: We all have a common enemy, and we all need to unite to fight it by making our own country stronger. That enemy—most commonly China—is threatening to outpace, if it isn't already outpacing, the US in infrastructural investment, educational programs, technological development, and elsewhere, and we need to devote millions, billions, even trillions of dollars to restoring the vitality of our institutions in order to reverse this trend. But why must defeating an "enemy" be the justification for policy that has the potential to benefit the public? Why should we just accept the premise that there must be an "enemy" to compete against and defeat? Why can't policy be enacted for the sole purpose of improving people's lives? And how does this messaging about the threat of a looming adversary serve the ruling class? On this episode, we detail the timeworn trope of the common enemy as a "unifying" device, looking at how increasingly so-called progressives are appealing to feel-good sentiments of unity and to the genuine needs for sound infrastructure, robust social safety nets, corporate regulation, and functional institutions in order to sell the idea that there is, and always will be, a shadowy bad guy that must be vanquished. Our guest is historian, professor and author Greg Grandin.
I'm reading Ted Gioia's "Immersive Humanities Course," 52 weeks of World Classics. Week 2 starts with Greek Poetry, and then we start Homer and The Odyssey. What a great week!I'm a beginner at reading the classics, but I've decided to just "crack the book" and get started. Here are a few of my key take-aways from this week:The surviving Greek Lyrics are very male-dominated, full of war and fighting and politics, with not a lot of attention paid to nature or beauty, or even romance. That is, until you get to Sappho, a woman. Her verses are really beautiful. I can't help but wonder why. Is it just what survived? Or is that an accurate reflection of Greek society? I thought it was the second until I read Homer. The Odyssey is full of male and female characters, and they are both important to the story. So where the poetry was very male-centric (except for Sappho) Homer absolutely isn't. I mean, Penelope seems kind of weak, but Athena is absolutely crucial to the plot. I will have to think about this a lot more.Odysseus is a pain in the neck. While I love the story, I'm not a fan of the guy himself so far, at least by Book 10. For instance, when he gets ready to pass by the Sirens, he is told to lash himself to the mast of the ship IF he wants to hear the Siren Song. And that's what he chose to do! Why would he not just say, “Nope, I'll put beeswax in my ears like the rest of the crew and we will just sail on by.” It seems supremely arrogant.Telemachus, on the other hand, seems to me to possibly be the better hero. I'm looking forward to seeing him find his dad.I have a lot of other thoughts this week, especially about the Fagles translation I read. This is a year-long challenge! Join me next week to finish the Odyssey. We'll be joined by a fun guest!CONNECTTo read more of my writing, visit my Substack - https://www.cheryldrury.substack.com.Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cldrury/ LISTENSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5GpySInw1e8IqNQvXow7Lv?si=9ebd5508daa245bdApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crack-the-book/id1749793321 Captivate - https://crackthebook.captivate.fm

What if the ancient myths hold the key to unlocking the mysteries of addiction? Join us on a journey through the complex interplay of astrology, Greek mythology, and depth psychology as we explore the forces that shape addiction and recovery. Inspired by our previous conversation with Brice Hancock from the Recovery Center in Denver, this episode promises to provide fresh insights and tools to aid those grappling with addiction. Discover how the story of Odysseus and the sirens serves as a powerful metaphor for temptation and restraint, offering a framework for understanding the personal battle against addictive behaviors. In our exploration, we compare the mythological approaches of Odysseus and Jason in confronting the sirens, symbolizing the tug-of-war between Saturn's discipline and Neptune's creativity. These mythic tales echo the struggle between conscious restraint and the seductive pull of addictive substances and behaviors, like the incessant allure of our smartphones. By uncovering the deeper layers of these stories, we invite you to reflect on your own 'siren songs' and consider strategies to break free from their grasp, just as Odysseus did by tying himself to the mast and embracing support from his crew. This episode encourages a transformation from avoidance to integration, highlighting the hero's journey of personal growth and self-discovery. As we discuss the metaphor of harmonizing with the sirens, we emphasize how embracing one's inner sound can lead to greater self-awareness and liberation. The astrological backdrop, with Saturn's position relative to Neptune, underscores the convergence of discipline and dreams, urging us to find balance in our quest for wholeness. Join us for a thought-provoking dialogue that blends myth, astrology, and psychology, offering a unique perspective on the path to recovery and self-discovery.Cover Art: The Scream by Edvard MunchPodcast Musician: Marlia CoeurPlease consider becoming a Patron to support the show!Go to OnTheSoulsTerms.com for more.
Thirty years ago, an iconic goal of liberal activists was to offer a free breakfast for all public school students, regardless of family income. In response, Congress authorized a three-year pilot program to test the effects of universal free meals for students. In 2004 the USDA Economic Research Service published the results of what it called the “definitive data on the impact of universal-free breakfast participation.” The study compared gains in standardized test scores for reading and math for universal-free breakfast participants and nonparticipants, and found “no significant differences.” Nonetheless, today more than 90% of Oregon public schools provide both a free breakfast and a free lunch to all students. Activists hope to make it 100% of students in 2025. If they succeed, it's unlikely that they will stop there. The next demand will be universal free dinners as well. It doesn't matter that subsidized meals are unnecessary for most families, or that state intervention undermines the role of parents. From the standpoint of advocates, the primary goal is to make as many services as possible free to students, whether it's food, computers, or birth control. Parents aren't considered to be important. In fact, they are treated as a nuisance in such matters as school discipline or gender pronouns. Parents who care about their children should continue to feed them breakfast at home, and pack them a lunch. “Free” is not always a good price when it comes to developing moral character in children.
Today - We're diving into the financial challenges currently facing Wenatchee and East Wenatchee. Both cities are dealing with a "slow down" in their local economy, and they're trying to navigate their 2025 budgets in a way that accounts for increasing costs and slower revenue growth. A young bride discovers an uninvited guest in her wedding photos, one no one remembers seeing. Capturing spirits on film is something every ghost hunter hopes for. As cameras have become more technologically sophisticated, it's easier to catch a spectre or two on film. Unfortunately, it's also become easier to fake a spirit photo. The science of capturing imagery on film and interest in the unseen world have been uneasy bed partners for many years. We'll look at an article on that partnership and two scientists who tried to see beyond the veil using photographic technology.MusicFesliyan Studios: "Ghost Stories," "Short Tension"Audio Jungle: "Halloween Waltzes"Tune Tank: "Siren Song"Ken Curtis: "Tumblin' Tumbleweeds"Narration: Robert BreaultPlease join us! Timestamps (7:00) - Lost at Sea Data indicates that over 3,000 people are reported missing at sea, each year. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss two separate disappearances where the people involved have vanished without a trace after allegedly boarding boats. Abigail Bernstein and her two young sons, Koa Kai and Kush, were last seen in October 2022 at the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor on Oahu, Hawaii. They were allegedly boarding a boat for a long voyage. The boat's captain would return one year later and say that Abigail and the children left the boat because they were seasick. No trace of the family has been found. Did something happen during the voyage or has Abigail taken the children and gone off the grid? British woman Sarm Heslop and her American boyfriend Ryan Bane lived on Ryan's boat ‘Siren Song' in the US Virgin Islands in 2021. She joins us to discuss what that was like, and to talk about her new book, The Power of One: How I Found the Strength to Tell the Truth and Why I Blew the Whistle on Facebook. Plus, Trump backers complain about the double standards, but the standards were clearly articulated in a fairly famous press conference we know Trump paid attention to. And, by any standard, Indian rail travel is especially dangerous, and, it goes without saying, especially to the poor.
