Let's try something new! Cultiste e cultisti. Just a routine reading of Board Game Geek put me onto the release of today's focus game, King of Tokyo: Duel. There was a banner ad on the homepage. From there, a quick click over to my local game shop webpage allowed me to preorder the game. I did not need any more information. It was King of Tokyo. It was designed by Richard Garfield. It was two-player.Upon further inspection, it appeared to be a tug of war style game. It had the established characters. Well, my copy arrived. I went to get it. Edward and I sat down to play it.King of Tokyo Duel sets you and your opponent in a mano a mano battle over Tokyo. As with the original game, there are multiple ways to win: knock the other monster out, get both the star and building markers into your spotlight zone, or one of the markers reaches the last space on your side of the board.Directing people to the get the games tab

This month we look at some of the games that got us into the hobby Catan, King of Tokyo, and Dominion. These are easier games to jump into that can be a great introduction into the world of board games.
Welcome back, fellow players! There comes a time in any board game day, night, or event when players are nearing full brain burn and need something to keep them engaged without sending them beyond the brink, and that is where quick and fun filler games come into play. Whether you are pushing your luck and failing terribly in CAN'T STOP or stomping around Japan to see who is the true KING OF TOKYO, these fast and exciting games can create stories and smiles that will last for ages. As always, thank you for your support and for listening to each episode. I love you all.

Jules steps into the hosting role and after a minute we are already asking "Steve who?" He is joined by Sarah and Mike for another cracking episode in the world of boardgaming. In the Sizzling Games segment Mike fell in love with the amazing artwork and clever gameplay of Everdell, Sarah and her crew played the trick-taking co-op The Crew, and Jules became a ruthless troll In The Hall Of The Mountain King. What is it about space that captures the imagination? The team discusses their favourite space-themed games this week and why the theme works so well in boardgaming. It seems that there are so many game styles, mechanics and even different franchises that can work in space. And of course, when evil-Jules beats you, no one can hear you scream... We reveal the winner of the Aeon's End Legacy vs Azul, before Jules and Mike face off in the latest Board Game Bracket: Cosmic Encounter vs Gizmos. Cosmic Encounter might be incredibly clever, but apparently Gizmos has balls. Make sure you visit our social pages and vote for your favourite game to make sure it comes out on top! In the Kickstarter segment Sarah is looking forward to receiving Rome & Roll next month. Perseverance has caught Jules' eye, but his heart is set on Windward which is expected to arrive next month as well. And Mike received his first-ever Kickstarter game; the wacky cure-all card game Trust Me I'm A Doctor. Finally, in Swear An Oath Sarah fulfilled her oath by bringing Obscurio off the shelf, but found it really needed a traitor to make it more fun. Mike couldn't manage to get King Of Tokyo to the table due to the COVID lockdown so he played it online instead and came out victorious! And Jules just can't get enough of the Quacks of Quedlinburg successor: The Taverns of Tiefenthal. The gang then all swear new oaths: Race For The Galaxy: Alien Artifacts (Sarah), Tiny Epic Galaxies (Mike), and Lords of Scotland (Jules) Sizzling Games: Everdell (1:14), The Crew (9:15), In The Hall Of The Mountain King (19:00) Topic of the Week: Space-Themed Games (28:38) Board Game Bracket (50:11) Kickstarter (1:01:11) Swear An Oath (1:11:49) **BOARDGAMEBBQ.COM** Board Game BBQ | Board Game Podcast boardgamebbq.com Head on over to the Board Game BBQ website for links to previous episodes, more information on all of the games mentioned, and upcoming events. **JOIN OUR DISCORD!** The BGBBQ now has a Discord Channel. The gloves are off this week as the Boardgame Bracket kicks off with a massive match-up: Gloomhaven vs Pandemic. Steve, Mitch, and Dan square off in defense of why one game is better than the other. But first of all the boys discuss their Sizzling Games, before taking a deep dive into the topic of the week: Boardgame Bling - what is it, where can you get it, and is it worth it? And somehow they still find time to brag about fulfilling their oaths and set new ones. What a show!! I've been preaching ... about the natural man, and how serving Jesus the way we would choose on our own is certainly wrong. I've been reading The Corporate Coach, by James Miller, which emphasizes service in the corporate world -- which both resembles and differs from service in the Lord's kingdom. I've been hearing about the bombings in Sri Lanka -- and I am neither afraid nor angry. I've been playing King of Tokyo, which makes a distinction between playing to have fun and playing to win.

OK, so maybe none of us are Dwayne Johnson. Maybe we’ve never been WWE Champ, or even the People’s Champ, for that matter. Maybe we’ve never saved America from rampaging giant animals. But you know what? None of us has that shitty brahma bull tattoo that we had to cover up out of embarrassment, so at least we have him beat there. Why does any of this matter? Hold on, I’m getting there. In just a few months, one of the greatest video games from our childhood, Rampage, hits theaters in live-action movie form, and he’s the star. So this week we’re giving you our play through of a very similar board game, King of Tokyo. King of Tokyo is a dice rolling game similar to Yahtzee in concept, with a few other layers added in. The players race to be the first to 20 victory points, which are earned via number combinations on the dice, or by taking over Tokyo and remaining there for as long as possible. Each player is competing against everyone else, and can also deal damage to opponents in order to knock them out of the game. Energy cubes can be used to purchase cards that deliver one-time or continual effects to help your monster defeat the others. The game retails for about $30 depending on the seller, unless you manage to find a first edition copy, which can run you upwards of $75. We’ve got new brews for you in this episode, too! Schnell goes to one of our favorite breweries, Great Lakes, and tries out their Edmund Fitzgerald Porter. Junior stays in-state and samples Badger State Brewing’s Sticky Bandit, Nelson stays with his island theme and drinks Longboard Island Lager from Kona Brewing Company, and Teej, as his MO, sticks with stout, this time Stompin’ Grounds Coffee Stout from Uinta Brewing Company.
With the World Series under way it was the perfect time to bring our good friend Will Leitch to the Pawncast. Will is an accomplished author, sports writer, film critic and, unfortunately for some, noted St. Louis Cardinals fan. We get Will to play some King of Tokyo while talking jogging, Harrison Ford, Hunter S. Thompson, covering politics and the worst fandoms. Outburst! Who would have thought our experimental podcast would have made it 10 whole episodes? It seems like only yesterday we found some microphones down the back of the sofa and thought, "yeah, that's worth a shot." In reality, it was two and a half entire months. In this episode, Glenn teaches the gang what it's like to be 50-foot tall and have webbed feet. Joel has a scaly but self-conscious friend that could avert disaster. Marcus, pasty sphenisciphobe, wants nothing to do with it. Leave us a review on iTunes if you like us, email us at games@bestplay.co if you hate us.
Really guys, I want to say how sorry I am about this episode. The amount of hard work that goes into making art for games is just incredible, but sometimes we just don't like it.

In this episode of The State of Games, Monkey takes the reins (at least for a little bit) before Dice steers the conversation toward girls and what they really really want - out of games. It's not long before Monkey spills the secrets of luring girl gamers, keeping them around, and even turning them into the coveted ubergamer. All this, plus a look at the monster release, King of Tokyo, the brainburner Belfort, and TC Petty III's quirky creations VivaJava and Good Ol' Punchin' Planes. Oh, and then there's a little something about Monkey and Dice's wedding anniversary... awwww.
