“If you like beer," says Greg Casey, "There's no better time in the history of mankind to be living in the United States, right now.” And if anyone is qualified to make such a statement, it's Casey. After decades leading yeast and quality programs for some of the biggest brewers in the Western hemisphere, Casey retired to work on his passion project—telling the story of American brewing from the 1830's to the present in a way that showcases its innovation as well as the interplay through that history with parallel brewing cultures and industries in Europe. In this episode, Casey hits on turning points in American lager brewing history, outlining the contexts and driving factors in large scale recipe changes, consumer preferences, ABVs, and more. Along the way, he discusses: differences in 1800's beer drinkers in Europe and America American brewers' development of pale beer without chill haze the two prominent yeast lineages in American lager brewing "flowering times" through American brewing history where beer, in general, became lighter early attempts to ban corn and rice via congressional action the impact of the pork industry on brewery closures in the 1940's the long history of using offbeat ingredients in American beer And more. Two giant pandas on loan from China have arrived at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. Also, originally from Central Asia, Kernza doesn't need to be replanted every year, unlike crops such as corn and soybeans.Pandas Return To Washington, D.C., ZooOn Tuesday, two VIPs (Very Important Pandas) arrived at Washington's Dulles International Airport, en route to new quarters at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. The arrival marks a new chapter of “panda diplomacy,” which leverages the public's affection for the cute, charismatic animals to both strengthen US-China ties and fund conservation initiatives. Sophie Bushwick, senior news editor at New Scientist, joins SciFri's John Dankosky to talk about the giant pandas' arrival and other stories from the week in science.Scientists Push For A Lesser-Known Grain Called KernzaOn a recent weekday afternoon, dozens of people filled the cozy taproom at Blue Jay Brewing Company. On tap that day was a fresh creation called New Roots. The American Lager was a hit, with many of the patrons going back to the bar for another glass.Blue Jay's owner and brewer, Jason Thompson, was also pleased with the result of this experimental beer, which he described as “earthy, almost nutty,” with a “lingering honey-like sweetness to it.” Those flavors came from his choice to use a novel grain called Kernza for 25% of the 600 pounds of grain needed for the whole brew, he said.Read the rest at sciencefriday.com.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. In this episode Bob and I continue with lager month as we breakdown American Lagers. The American lager has little in the way of hop and malt character. A straw to gold, very clean and crisp, highly carbonated lager. Next to American Light lager this might be the second most popular beer style in the U.S. Style examples: 1. AB/InBev – Budweiser 2. Founders – Solid Gold 3. El Segundo Brewing Company – Broken Skull ABV: 4.2-5.3% IBUs: 8-18 Color: 2-3.5 Serving Temp: Go cold — anywhere in the 33- to 40-degree range is suitable for macro lagers. This is around your average refrigerator temperature, with 33 degrees, near freezing, on the low end. Your sweet spot is really between 36 and 38 degrees, which is the temperature of most draft beer systems. Serving Pressure: 10-14 PSI Drink representative selection of the week: Drink representative selection of the week: Royal Docks Brewing Company – Backyard Crusher 5.1% and 18 IBUs Beer as described by brewer: At Royal Docks, we simply adore intellectually challenging brews that beckon one to explore their depths and parse each nuanced sip, but this ain't one of those beers. See, there's thinkin' beer and there's drinkin' beer - and Backyard Crusher is a drinkin' beer. Sure, we could tell you all about the Egyptian black lime, Mediterranean Sea-salt and Citra hops that make this tangy golden quencher so easy on the tongue, but that would defeat the purpose Support the show by doing your Amazon shopping through our affiliate link. On this episode we taste through a long list of American Lagers. What makes this episode interesting is that I had just returned from a trip to see family in Michigan and had brought back an assortment of midwestern beers. What makes this episode very special is that the trip I took back east was to say goodbye to my Grandfather, the man who started my entire beer journey 15 years ago. We have Miles of Growler Gang as a guest to help us drink through this large assortment of lagers, and at the very end I have included a recording taken from one of the times I talked with my Grandfather about his beer adventures before he passed. In the world of American Lagers, Coors Banquet is an easy Top 3 beer. This crisp, easy-drinking style is one that's hard to replicate and easy to become a showcase for flaws in technique. We talk about Coors Banquet during our Commercial Calibration, and what goes into making beers of this caliber. Then, Brian Schar takes us through 4 weird off-flavors every homebrewer should know. In this episode, we found ourselves back in Escondido at the local, independent eatery and brewery, Plan 9 Alehouse, where you come for the beer but leave a slightly better pinball player.
Summer is coming and it's time for some Mexican Lagers Mexican Lagers are so hot right now. The CEO of Constellation brands even goes as far as saying he believes Modelo is about to become America's favorite beer. The data kind of supports that claim, with Consellation's brands (including Modelo, Pacifico, and Corona) seeing 14% growth in the most recent quarter. Craft breweries are cranking out more Mexican Lagers as well. Most are simple drinkin' beers akin to a Pale Lager / Clara. But some are going deeper into the genre with Vienna Lagers and others. To make matters even more confusing, if you look at Modelo Especial on Untappd it calls itself an American Lager, then description says it's a Pilsner. This thing has quite the identity crisis going on. Either way, Brian enjoyed this one but I thought it was a bit too sweet, especially if they are claiming it's a Pilsner. Corona brought by memories of drinking in my younger days and I'd still crush several of these by the pool or on the beach if that's what's available. For some craft representation we sampled Tactical Brewing's collaboration with Cholo Dogs - El Campéon. This elote-inspired lager is brewed with smoked malt, flaked corn, tajin, and limes and was much more enjoyable than I expected. As the temps heat up many of these beers are perfect for cooling down. No matter if they are America's favorite or not they're nice to pack in the cooler. Correction:We mention in this episode that Modelo is poised to take the top spot in American beer sales Although this claim was made by Constellation's CEO, the data reflects sales for all Constellation brands and not just Modelo. We apologize for lying to you like that and we'll do better in the future. Golden State Cider's new owner and Seismic Brewery founder Christopher Jackson is back on Brew Ha Ha with Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras. He was last on Brew Ha Ha on this episode that aired back on July 2, 2019, the day before they opened the Sebastopol taproom. They are tasting some cider called Save the Gravenstein, which Chris calls an expression of Sonoma County Gravenstein apples. He has known the partners of Golden State for a long time. He would like to take Golden State Cider national, that is the goal. Some of their apples already come from the Pacific Northwest but they could source apples from places like Saratoga, NY too. Sustainability for the Long Term He explains that brands like Seismic and Golden State could be managed for exploitation but he has other ideas. We hear about their desire to run a sustainable operation for the long term, and how they practice water conservation and use green electricity. It is also important to use local ingredients. Their grain and hops are grown within 10 miles of their Sebastopol facility and they use malt from Admiral Malting in Alameda. Tremor has won two important Gold Medals recently, at the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup. Next up is the US Open Beer Championship. One more win and they can claim the Triple Crown for beer. Tremor's idea was to bring the American Lager back into the craft brew business, but to make it organically and use only barley, instead of the way of “macro” beers. Seismic Brewing Co. has always had sustainability at the heart of its operations. Climate change is an issue for anyone working in agriculture. In order for his sons to be able to participate in the business years from now, the operation has to be sustainable with mitigating climate change at the core of their ethic.

If that's not enough spice for you, it is served on a red chipotle bun. The gents take the Arby's Diablo Dare Challenge. The IRS is way behind on last year's tax returns and is issuing a warning to Americans who will be filing a 2021 tax return, and the news is not good. Will tax season be even more of a mess than usual? Prices on just about everything continue to go up. There doesn't seem to be an end in sight to this inflationary spiral.
