My Expectations or Hope in God?

4/28/20 - In the midst of trials how do we keep up hope? The difference may lie in whether I look to my expectations which often lead to disappointment or I look to hope in God. How do you keep hope in the midst of challenges in life? 1 Peter 1:3-9 shows us who is the source of our living hope. 1 Peter 1:3-9 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith--more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire--may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 3/1/20 - We are a frantic culture. What once was 9 to 5 (9am to 5pm) became 7-11 (7am to 11pm) and is now 24/7. Sundays used to be a day where shops were closed. Now you can shop every day of the week around town and all hours of the day online. God intended for us to rest. In fact he created a day each week for us to rest - the Sabbath. The Sabbath has always been sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. As followers of Jesus we are not called to keep a legalistic, religious day of no work, but we are called to take a day to rest and be refreshed in the Lord. What's your rhythm of rest? MESSAGE NOTES: Leviticus 23:1-8 ESV Feasts of the Lord 1 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, These are the appointed feasts of the LORD that you shall proclaim as holy convocations; they are my appointed feasts. The Sabbath 3 "Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work. It is a Sabbath to the LORD in all your dwelling places. The Passover/Unleavened Bread 4 "These are the appointed feasts of the LORD, the holy convocations, which you shall proclaim at the time appointed for them. 5 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight, is the LORD's Passover. 6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD; for seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. 7 On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall not do any ordinary work. 8 But you shall present a food offering to the LORD for seven days. Bring Light to Brutal Darkness

2/23/20 - The story of Acts is incredible in the midst of a brutal, oppressive government and a harsh, impoverished life for those in the first century Roman Empire. We read about bold Gospel preaching, supernatural healings, heavenly miracles, and gruesome trials, including shipwrecks, beatings, extreme opposition and stonings. In this midst of this dark climate, God uses ordinary men and women to bring light to the darkness. How does God want to use you as an ordinary man or woman to bring Jesus' light into the darkness around you? MESSAGE NOTES: Acts 14:8-23 ESV 8 Now at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet. He was crippled from birth and had never walked. 9 He listened to Paul speaking. And Paul, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be made well, 10 said in a loud voice, "Stand upright on your feet." And he sprang up and began walking. 11 And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian, "The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!" 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13 And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates and wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds. 14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying out, 15 "Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men, of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. 16 In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways. 17 Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness." 18 Even with these words they scarcely restrained the people from offering sacrifice to them. 19 But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. 20 But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city, and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe. 21 When they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God. 23 And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed. Are You Giving To God With A Willing Heart?

2/16/20 - Why do you do what you do? Are you motivated by duty, guilt, expectation of others, tradition? Our true motivation should come from a willing heart - a heart that responds to God's grace, love and mercy with thanksgiving, devotion, love and zeal. God calls us to examine our motivation and make sure what we are doing is from a willing heart. MESSAGE NOTES: Exodus 35:20-36:7 ESV 20 Then all the congregation of the people of Israel departed from the presence of Moses. 21 And they came, everyone whose heart stirred him, and everyone whose spirit moved him, and brought the LORD's contribution to be used for the tent of meeting, and for all its service, and for the holy garments. 22 So they came, both men and women. All who were of a willing heart brought brooches and earrings and signet rings and armlets, all sorts of gold objects, every man dedicating an offering of gold to the LORD. 23 And every one who possessed blue or purple or scarlet yarns or fine linen or goats' hair or tanned rams' skins or goatskins brought them. 24 Everyone who could make a contribution of silver or bronze brought it as the LORD's contribution. And every one who possessed acacia wood of any use in the work brought it. 25 And every skillful woman spun with her hands, and they all brought what they had spun in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. 26 All the women whose hearts stirred them to use their skill spun the goats' hair. 27 And the leaders brought onyx stones and stones to be set, for the ephod and for the breastpiece, 28 and spices and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense. 29 All the men and women, the people of Israel, whose heart moved them to bring anything for the work that the LORD had commanded by Moses to be done brought it as a freewill offering to the LORD. 30 Then Moses said to the people of Israel, "See, the LORD has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; 31 and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship, 32 to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, 33 in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, for work in every skilled craft. 34 And he has inspired him to teach, both him and Oholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan. 35 He has filled them with skill to do every sort of work done by an engraver or by a designer or by an embroiderer in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, or by a weaver--by any sort of workman or skilled designer. 1 "Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whom the LORD has put skill and intelligence to know how to do any work in the construction of the sanctuary shall work in accordance with all that the LORD has commanded." 2 And Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whose mind the LORD had put skill, everyone whose heart stirred him up to come to do the work. 3 And they received from Moses all the contribution that the people of Israel had brought for doing the work on the sanctuary. They still kept bringing him freewill offerings every morning, 4 so that all the craftsmen who were doing every sort of task on the sanctuary came, each from the task that he was doing, 5 and said to Moses, "The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the LORD has commanded us to do." 6 So Moses gave command, and word was proclaimed throughout the camp, "Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary." So the people were restrained from bringing, 7 for the material they had was sufficient to do all the work, and more. For more about Crossroads Church Glenwood visit www.ccglenwood.com.

God Always Provides A Way Through

2/2/20 - When we are hard pressed in life, God wants us to know that there's not always a way out, but there's always a way through. The epic story of the Israelites exodus from Egypt shows us that God is capable of providing a way through, even when we can't see it. MESSAGE NOTES: Exodus 14:1-31 ESV 1 Then the LORD said to Moses, 2 "Tell the people of Israel to turn back and encamp in front of Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, in front of Baal-zephon; you shall encamp facing it, by the sea. 3 For Pharaoh will say of the people of Israel, 'They are wandering in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.' 4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, and the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD." And they did so. 5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, the mind of Pharaoh and his servants was changed toward the people, and they said, "What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?" 6 So he made ready his chariot and took his army with him, 7 and took six hundred chosen chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. 8 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the people of Israel while the people of Israel were going out defiantly. 9 The Egyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh's horses and chariots and his horsemen and his army, and overtook them encamped at the sea, by Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon. 10 When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the LORD. 11 They said to Moses, "Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: 'Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians'? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness." 13 And Moses said to the people, "Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. 14 The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent." 15 The LORD said to Moses, "Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. 16 Lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground. 17 And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, his chariots, and his horsemen. 18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen." 19 Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, 20 coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night without one coming near the other all night. 21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the LORD drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23 The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24 And in the morning watch the LORD in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic, 25 clogging their chariot wheels so that they drove heavily. And the Egyptians said, "Let us flee from before Israel, for the LORD fights for them against the Egyptians."

Knowing Jesus

1/26/20 - Emotions help us feel things about people; our minds help us know things about people. But neither fully allows us to know someone, that is, in a relational sense. Knowing someone goes beyond emotions and intellect, to spending time with someone and understanding their story, their heart, their mind, their dreams. That's what Jesus is asking us to do: to know him relationally. Not just to know things about him or feel things about him, but know him. MESSAGE NOTES: Psalm 14:1-7 ESV - To the choirmaster. Of David. The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the LORD? There they are in great terror, for God is with the generation of the righteous. You would shame the plans of the poor, but the LORD is his refuge. Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad. Philippians 3:7-11 (ESV) - But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.  “Divine truth is of the nature of spirit and for that reason can be received only by spiritual revelation…. God’s thoughts belong to the world of the spirit, man’s to the world of intellect, and while spirit can embrace intellect, the human intellect can never comprehend spirit. … Man by reason cannot know God; he can only know about God. … Man’s reason is a fine instrument and useful within its field. It was not given as an organ by which to know God.” - A.W. Tozer Your 2020 Building Blueprint For more about Crossroads Church Glenwood visit www.ccglenwood.com.

1/19/20 - If you've ever built anything, a fort, a treehouse, a snow castle, you know there has to be some sort of blueprint for what you're doing. That blueprint may not be on paper but in the imagination of the mind. To build something there has to be a vision first and construction second. This year we want to help you get some vision from God for building in 2020. MESSAGE NOTES: Genesis 35:1-15 ESV 1 God said to Jacob, "Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau." 2 So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Put away the foreign gods that are among you and purify yourselves and change your garments. 3 Then let us arise and go up to Bethel, so that I may make there an altar to the God who answers me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone." 4 So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods that they had, and the rings that were in their ears. Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree that was near Shechem. 5 And as they journeyed, a terror from God fell upon the cities that were around them, so that they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. 6 And Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him, 7 and there he built an altar and called the place El-bethel, because there God had revealed himself to him when he fled from his brother. 8 And Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, and she was buried under an oak below Bethel. So he called its name Allon-bacuth. 9 God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him. 10 And God said to him, "Your name is Jacob; no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name." So he called his name Israel. 11 And God said to him, "I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body. 12 The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give the land to your offspring after you." 13 Then God went up from him in the place where he had spoken with him. 14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he had spoken with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it and poured oil on it. 15 So Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him Bethel. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. As many as seven times?" 22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23 "Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, 'Pay what you owe.' 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart." Before Nelson Mandela left prison he said, "As I stand before the door to my freedom, I realize that if I do not leave my pain, anger, and bitterness behind me, I will still be in  prison." MESSAGE NOTES: Matthew 2:1-12 ESV The Visit of the Wise Men 1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:      6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’ 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. MESSAGE NOTES: Communion & Call to Worship: Mark 14:22-26 ESV - 22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, "Take; this is my body." 23 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God." 26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Mark 14:32-65 ESV - 32 And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch." 35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will." 37 And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." 39 And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him. 41 And he came the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand." 43 And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard." 45 And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, "Rabbi!" And he kissed him. 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled." 50 And they all left him and fled. 51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked. 53 And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.'" 59 Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?" 61 But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?" 62 And Jesus said, "I am,

MESSAGE NOTES: Mark 12:28-34 ESV - 28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of all?" 29 Jesus answered, "The most important is, 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' 31 The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." 32 And the scribe said to him, "You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices." 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions. Mark 14:1-9 ESV - 1 It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him, 2 for they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people." 3 And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. 4 There were some who said to themselves indignantly, "Why was the ointment wasted like that? 5 For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." And they scolded her. 6 But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. 8 She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial. 9 And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her." The Dirty Truth On How To Be Fruitful in King Jesus’ Kingdom

During a lakeside teaching, Jesus tells a parable about dirt that relates to fruitfulness in his Kingdom. So what is the dirty truth about how to be fruitful in King Jesus' Kingdom? Listen in to find out. MESSAGE NOTES: Parables - “a casting alongside” a brief story told by way of analogy to illustrate a spiritual truth; ⅓ of Jesus’ teaching in parables; parables force people to dig deeper and ask, “What does Jesus mean? How does this apply to my life?” Mark 4:1-20 NLT Parable of the Farmer Scattering Seed      1 Once again Jesus began teaching by the lakeshore. A very large crowd soon gathered around him, so he got into a boat. Then he sat in the boat while all the people remained on the shore. 2 He taught them by telling many stories in the form of parables, such as this one:      3 “Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seed. 4 As he scattered it across his field, some of the seed fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate it. 5 Other seed fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seed sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. 6 But the plant soon wilted under the hot sun, and since it didn’t have deep roots, it died. 7 Other seed fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants so they produced no grain. 8 Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they sprouted, grew, and produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted!” 9 Then he said, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”      10 Later, when Jesus was alone with the twelve disciples and with the others who were gathered around, they asked him what the parables meant.      11 He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secret of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables for everything I say to outsiders, 12 so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: ‘When they see what I do, they will learn nothing. When they hear what I say, they will not understand. Otherwise, they will turn to me and be forgiven.'”      13 Then Jesus said to them, “If you can’t understand the meaning of this parable, how will you understand all the other parables? 14 The farmer plants seed by taking God’s word to others. 15 The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message, only to have Satan come at once and take it away. 16 The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. 17 But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word. 18 The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God’s word, 19 but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced. 20 And the seed that fell on good soil represents those who hear and accept God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!” People with hearts like a: Path: Hear word, but Satan (birds) snatches away word (lies, doubts, strongholds, etc.) Rocky Ground: Hear & receive with joy, but shallow roots (no firm foundation) causes plant to die (amidst trials and hardships) Thorny Ground: Hear word, but worldly desires & riches (thorns) chokes out word Good Soil: Hear and accept Word and bear fruit 30x, 60x, 100x Key Verse: “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God” verse 11 Secret of the kingdom of God - something formerly hidden but now revealed that would never be known without God revealing it  Jesus cares most about the condition of your heart (soil) (verses 3-9, 13-20) My fruitfulness depends on my hearts receptivity to God’s Word What is the condition of my heart’s soil/receptivity to God’s Word?

Listen in to hear... MESSAGE NOTES: Mark 2:1-17 ESV 1 And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. 3 And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4 And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. 5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 "Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" 8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your bed and walk'? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--he said to the paralytic-- 11 "I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home." 12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!" 13 He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. 14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he rose and followed him. 15 And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?" 17 And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners." Why did Jesus come? “It is finished.” What was finished? What had Jesus completed? How did he know? “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” - Jesus, Mark 2:17 “[Jesus] came into the world to save sinners.” - Paul, 1 Timothy 1:15 “I came to seek and save the lost.” - Jesus, Luke 19:10 “Jesus says, “You see, if you have me, I will actually fulfill you, and if you fail me, I will always forgive you. I’m the only savior who can do that.” But is is hard to figure that out. Many of us first start going to God, going to church, because we have problems, and we’re asking God to give us a little boost over the hump so that we can get back to saving ourselves, back to pursing our deepest wish. The problem is that we’re looking to something besides Jesus as savior. Almost always when we first go to Jesus saying, “This is my deepest wish,” his response is that we need to go a lot deeper than that.” - Tim Keller How are you responding to life? “If someone says to you, ‘The main problem in your life is not what’s happened to you, not what people have done to you; your main problem is the way you’ve responded to that’ -- ironically, that’s empowering. Why? Because you can’t do very much about what’s happened to you or about what other people are doing -- but you can do something about yourself. When the Bible talks about sin it is not just referring to the bad things we do. It’s not just lying or lust of whatever the case may be -- it is ignoring God in the world he has made; it’s rebelling against him by living without reference to him.

What Kingdom Are You Ushering In?

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 6, 2019 38:47

10/6/19 - Everyone loves the idea of a storybook kingdom: kings on royal thrones, beautiful majestic castles, brave knights defeating dragons and rescuing princesses. The idea of kingdom comes from God himself who rules and reigns not an earthly kingdom but a supernatural one. Are you living in God's Kingdom or ushering in your own kingdom by trying to be king? MESSAGE NOTES: Last week: Jesus is King - he became King through his sacrifice/death This week: Jesus is ushering in his Kingdom, are you? Read Mark 1:8-15 ESV “The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel.” - Jesus, Mark 1:15 God’s Kingdom = God’s kingly rule or sovereignty Jesus says the Kingdom is like: a farmer (Matt. 13:24), a seed (Matt. 13:31), a yeast (Matt. 13:33), a treasure (Matt. 13:44), a pearl merchant (Matt. 13:45), a fishnet (Matt. 13:47), an employer (Matt. 20:1), a king inviting people to a marriage feast (Matt. 22:2), and ten young women (Matt. 25:11) 3 Views of God’s Kingdom: Kingdom “Whatever” (ignorant, apathetic, indifferent to Jesus’ Kingdom, essentially: “I am king”) Kingdom Coming (Future hope - Jesus will be King when he returns) poor understanding of “Your Kingdom come…” Kingdom Now & Not Yet (current reality (Jesus is King now) and future hope (Jesus’ Kingdom will be fully realized when he comes back) WORD + SPIRIT Kingdom Now: Jesus provides way for supernatural ministry, overcoming evil, & spreading of Gospel through Spirit-empowered church Kingdom Not Yet: When Jesus returns, God’s Kingdom is fully realized and sin, sickness, suffering and Satan are defeated. We are to live and minister within healthy tension of the Kingdom “now” and the Kingdom “not yet.” 1 Corinthians 15:24-28 NLT - After that the end will come, when he will turn the Kingdom over to God the Father, having destroyed every ruler and authority and power. For Christ must reign until he humbles all his enemies beneath his feet. And the last enemy to be destroyed is death. For the Scriptures say, "God has put all things under his authority." 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 NLT - We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. So encourage each other with these words. Philippians 2:9-11 ESV - Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. How are you ushering in God’s Kingdom? Grace - Have you repented & are you believing in the true Gospel: Following King Jesus, who is victorious over sin, death & Satan, is the only way to God?  Gospel = “news that brings joy... history-making, life-shaping news, as opposed to just daily news” Growth - How are you making Jesus Lord of your life (in all areas) & how are you becoming more like Jesus? Greater Things - How are you ushering in Jesus’ Kingdom with his presence and Holy Spirit power? We pray: “Your Kingdom come…” (Matt 6:10) Let’s usher in your Kingdom now (through church) and when you return (returning King) LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. How has the Gospel changed your life? 2. How is God's Kingdom different from a worldly kingdom? 3. What does it mean and look like to live life with a Kingdom focus? 4. What does it look like for you to live in the tension between God's Kingdom Now and God's Kingdom Not Yet? SUNDAY'S WORSHIP MUSIC PLAYLIST:

Who Is Jesus, Really?

9/29/19 - How do you know someone is really who they say they are? In an age of relativism, you could make up your answer or you could look to a reliable source. To know who Jesus is, we have to look at the Bible, the source of information on who he is. So just what does the Bible say? MESSAGE NOTES: We have an identity crisis today: Who am I? Who is God? relativism - the doctrine that knowledge, truth, and morality exist in relation to culture, society, or historical context, and are not absolute. In other words, I can make up whatever truth I want. Who is Jesus? Jesus claims to be the Word of God (John 1), then shouldn’t we look to the Bible for what the Bible says about who Jesus is? Read Mark 1:1-15 ESV Call of the King:  Jesus = God Saves Christos (Greek) = anointed royal figure / Messiah Son of God = Messiah + God himself Lord (kyrios) Jesus Christ → Jesus, the Anointed King & Messiah Jesus is Savior & LORD - what does lordship mean? Here's some of what the Bible says about who Jesus is: Genesis 12:1-3 2 Samuel 7:12-16 Micah 5:2 Isaiah 9:6, 11:1 Jeremiah 23:5-6 Matthew 2:1-2 Luke 1:32–33 Mark 8:29, 9:2-8, 11:8-10, 15:39 John 19:19-22 1 Timothy 6:13-16 Revelation 19:16 Liar, Lunatic, or Lord? “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” - C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity So who is Jesus? If Jesus is Lord, what does that mean for you? Jesus calls us to follow him by dying to live Calling - How are you responding to Jesus’ calling initially to come to a saving faith & on-going obeying him as Lord? Sacrifice - How are you laying your life down to love Jesus and others? Triumph - How are you triumphing with Jesus now and in the future? (kingdom now & not yet) LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. How do you know who you are? What provides evidence of the real you? Explain. 2. Who do you say Jesus is? What evidence do you have that backs up your explanation? 3. If Jesus is really Lord, what does that mean for your life? How you live? 4. What do or think differently this week as a result of knowing that Jesus is Lord? Who Is Your American Idol?

9/15/19 - American Idol is one of the most popular TV shows ever. Ever wonder why? Perhaps it's because we all long to be associated with a superstar of royal status. All of us, in fact, have made something in our lives king. Who is king of your life? MESSAGE NOTES: American Idol - the most popular TV show ever; revolutionized audience participation (text voting) - why? People want to be part of choosing their next king! American Idols - “Is it that a 12-inch tall piece of wood or bronze can do something bad to us? Or is it that we do something awful to ourselves when we place adoration and attention that should go to God in other things? When it comes to idolatry, the danger is not in an item… it is in us.” - Ed Seltzer Who is king of your life? How does someone identify their idols? “Look at your daydreams. When you don't have to think about something, like when you are waiting for the bus, where does your mind love to rest? Or, look at where you spend your money most effortlessly. Also, if you take your most uncontrolled emotions or the guilt that you can't get rid of, you'll find your idols at the bottom. Whenever I hear someone say, "I know God forgives me, but I can't forgive myself," it means that person has something that is more important than God, because God forgives them. If you look at your greatest nightmare—if something were to happen that would make you feel you had no reason to live—that's a god.” Tim Keller Idolatry is anything that either disproportionately consumes your thoughts, actions or resources, or that take your focus off of God. Does the world revolve around me or God? Trinity = Father, Jesus, Holy Spirit loving, serving and glorifying each other “You shall have no other gods before me.” - God, Deuteronomy 5:7 We’re sinners who need a savior Gospel of Mark Author: John Mark (co-worker of Peter & Paul) Source: Peter’s eyewitness account Date: 65-70 A.D. Theme: Son of God, King Jesus was called to sacrifice himself and triumph over sin, death and Satan Know As: “The Action Gospel” Mark 8:34-38 ESV - And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." Life With King Jesus Calling: How are you responding to King Jesus’ call to be your Savior & to obey him as Lord? Sacrifice: How are you laying your life down to love King Jesus and others? Triumph: How are you winning the battle with King Jesus now and in the future? Jesus is saying to reign with him, you need to lay down your life and allow him to pick it up Jesus calls us to follow him by dying to live Challenge:  Who is king of your life? Really? Read the Book of Mark - see where it says Jesus is King Video: Gospel of Mark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVRixfameGY&feature=youtu.be LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. 11/20/16 - Oftentimes a single event in our lives causes us to compromise our freedom and sets us on a course of bondage. Brent Phillips challenges us to walk in the total freedom that comes only from Jesus Christ. Jesus came to set the captives free. He wants us to live the abundant life we were meant to live. Here are some verses and questions from Brent's message: Freedom starts with honesty. "Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results." - James 5:16 What event have you allowed in your life to set the ceiling on who you can be and what God can accomplish through you? "A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. 6/26/16 - Thanks to Gary Littell for encouraging us to live out our faith in action! God used a trip to Haiti to change Gary's heart for the poor. A key verse he shared is: James 2:14-17 NLT - What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don't show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, "Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well"--but then you don't give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn't enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. As a way of putting our faith in action, you can donate men's coats for the homeless served through Feed My Sheep now through October.
