Main Text: Matthew 20:29–34 (ESV) 29 And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him. 30 And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” 31 The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” 32And stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” 33 They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” 34 And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him.Preaching Point: Recognizing the compassionate authority of the Son of David should cause us to unashamedly depend on his mercy as we follow him daily.Teaching Points:Do You: Recognize the Merciful Son of David? (vv. 29-30)Do You: Shamelessly Depend on Jesus? (v. 31)Do You: Faithfully Follow Jesus? (vv. 32-34)Application Questions:Write down one observation or application you found helpful from this week's sermon. Why did it stand out to you? Read 2 Samuel 7:12-17, Ezekiel 34:23-24, and Luke 1:30-33. How do these passages deepen your understanding of why the blind men's recognition of Jesus as the “Son of David” in Matthew 20:29-34 was so significant? What could you miss about the identity of Jesus if you don't recognize him as the Son of David? How does God's desire for your shameless dependence on him strengthen your resolve to “cry out all the more” (cf. Matt 20:31) in reliance on him?Read 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 and 1 Corinthians 1:18-25. Why might shameless dependence on Jesus be viewed as weakness in our culture? How can you resist the pressure to project independence when what you truly need is deeper dependence on him?Read Mark 8:34-35 and Galatians 2:20. After encountering Jesus in Matthew 20, the blind men immediately followed him as his disciples. Since encountering the saving work of Christ, how would you characterize your pursuit of following Jesus? In what area of your life have you been slow to follow Jesus, and what necessary change will you make to pursue faithful obedience in that area?

We continue in our series from the Gospel According to Mark—Kingdom Come, God's Reign in a Chaotic World. This week pastor Glenn opens up one of the most famous, if not the most famous miracle that Jesus ever performed other than His resurrection, the feeding of the 5,000. The passage begins with the return of the 12 from the mission Jesus had sent them on and their reports about how things went. The familiarity of this passage and the miraculous event itself often leaves us wondering, what was really happening on this day. This Sunday we will dig into the deep and marvellous purpose and meaning that Jesus had in mind. You will be encouraged. In Go For Me, Tyler Lynde closes the Discipleship Matters journey by showing why a church prepared for crisis is a church shaped by discipleship. He revisits Jesus' four-step path—come and see, follow me, be with me, go for me—and then stays with the final step that turns conviction into movement. Opening Mark 16:15-20 like a field manual, Tyler makes the call clear: we are commanded to go into all the world, and we are never sent alone.Tyler clarifies the message we carry. The gospel isn't our moral performance or church brand; it's the finished work of Jesus: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). That good news is God's power for salvation (Romans 1:16). The only right response is repent and believe (Mark 1:15), and baptism becomes the public witness that we belong to Jesus. He urges us to talk to people, not at them, to pray that God opens blind eyes, and to rest in the freeing truth that we don't save anyone—God does. From message to power, Tyler shows how the risen Jesus still “works with” His people. Ordinary believers can ask to pray, confront darkness with Christ's authority, lay hands on the sick, and expect God to confirm His word. This isn't a pastor-only lane or a call to spectacle; it's the normal Christian life empowered by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). The safest place to be is on mission with God—not because risk disappears, but because His presence accompanies obedience. He also names four barriers that dim our light: the comfort of community that turns inward, fear amplified by constant panic, love of the shadows that splits Sunday faith from weekday life, and hatred of those in darkness that forgets our own rescue. The gospel answers each: remember the Father's sending love (John 3:16), resist fear with discernment and prayer, repent of compromise, and practice enemy-love.Finally, Tyler gives a simple on-ramp: small circles. Invite one, ask them to invite one, keep it to three. Read Mark one chapter a week, write a short prayer, note one insight and one application, swap questions, hop on a 20-minute weekly call, and gather monthly in person—then reproduce. Write your name on the lobby boards—discipling, being discipled, ready to start—and join the church family on February 8 to pray for fresh boldness. Going doesn't require a passport, only obedience. If you're ready to trade spectatorship for multiplication, press play and take your next step.We are Trinity Community Church in Knoxville, Tennessee.Subscribe to our Podcast & YouTube channel to find past sermons, classes, interviews, and more!Find us on Facebook & Instagram

Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor Referenced Scripture: John 6:60-69, Mark 10:17-22, Ephesians 4:1-3, Matthew 7:21-23 Reflection Questions:1. Describe your current relationship with Jesus. DTR (Define The Relationship)What adjectives would you use to describe your connection to Him right now? Is it growing closer, getting more distant, or staying the same? Explain. 2. What is the difference between being a fan of Jesus and being a follower of Jesus? What characteristics would you use to describe each of these kinds of people? Where do you see yourself currently? 3. In the life of Jesus (gospels), how does Jesus describe what it means to be a follower of Him? How does Jesus make this definition clear in his teachings and invitations to follow him? 4. Read Mark 10:17-31 (Rich Young Ruler)What are some observations you can make about following Jesus from this story? How does Jesus separate fans from followers in this story? Can you relate to the response of the rich young ruler? Why or why not? 5. In the sermon we talked about identity based spiritual transformation. Identity → Process → Outcome (fruit)(who we are) → (what we do) → (what we get) Why is it critical to start with identity as we approach the pursuit of spiritual transformation? What is the cost/problem with focusing on outcomes first rather than focusing on our identity? How would your life be different if your core identity was being a follower of Jesus? How would it shape your habits/disciplines and the outcomes of your life? 6. Read Matthew 7:21-23How is it possible for someone to think they are a follower of Jesus and not actually have a relationship with Him?What thoughts or questions come to your mind when you read this passage? Why does this passage make it so important for us to really answer the question, “Am I a follower of Jesus?” (as Jesus defines follower)How does Jesus define a true follower of Him? 7. If you had a DTR (define the relationship) with Jesus what do you think you would say? What do you think He would say? What's your next step? * Connect: We'd love to connect with you! Ever since the foundation of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the Communist Party of China (CCP) has used the historical memory of WWII to legitimize its rule. Exactly how the historical conflict gets framed, and which parts of it are highlighted while others get omitted, has been subject to dramatic changes – just like China itself – as the different CCP leaderships adjusted and readjusted their agendas, domestic and international politics, and their imagining of what a “New China” – should mean. Welcome to episode #1016 of Thinking With Mitch Joel (formerly Six Pixels of Separation). At a moment when artificial intelligence is reshaping not just how markets operate but how people think, feel, decide and connect, understanding the human consequences of that shift has become essential. Mark Schaefer is a keynote speaker, educator, strategist, and a voice in modern marketing, with more than three decades of experience spanning global sales, public relations and brand strategy. He is a faculty member at Rutgers University. Mark's latest book, How AI Changes Your Customers - The Marketing Guide To Humanity's Next Chapter, extends his body of work by examining how AI is quietly rewiring consumer psychology, trust, agency, empathy, and belonging (be sure to check out his other books). Rather than focusing on algorithms or tools, Mark explores how customers are becoming more machine-assisted, less patient, more dependent on automation, and increasingly hungry for meaning and connection in a world optimized for efficiency. He argues that curiosity, art, and human connection are strategic advantages rather than soft ideals. Grounded in research, lived experience, and cultural observation, his work challenges marketers and leaders to rethink relevance, rethink loyalty, and rethink what it means to serve customers whose decisions are increasingly shaped by machines. At its core, Mark's perspective reframes AI not as a threat to humanity, but as a force that exposes what only humans can still do well…if they choose to lean into it. This week Mark records for us what many scholars would agree is one of the most significant parables that Jesus ever gave. Known as the Parable of the Soils, it is the first of several parables that Jesus offers in Mark, that reveal for us and those in that day, how one might enter the Kingdom of God, what the Kingdom of God is like and finally, how the Kingdom of God inaugurated in Jesus grows! Read Mark 4:1-20 in advance to prepare for the message, and remember to bring your Study Guides!

We continue our series in the Gospel According to Mark—Kingdom Come, God's Reign in a Chaotic World. This week we move into a longer passage in which all of the events may not, upon first reading, appear to be connected. The passage is bookended with Mark recording what appear to be two separate 'interventions' by the family of Jesus, who are concerned about His welfare. In addition, the religious Scribes take their accusations against Jesus to a new low, accusing Him of having a demon. Jesus' response is both a parable and a strong rebuke. Throughout the whole of the text there is however, a unifying theme, that we will see on Sunday. Read Mark 3:20-35 in advance to prepare for the message, and remember to bring your Study Guides!

Today we continue our series in the Gospel According to Mark—Kingdom Come, God's Reign in a Chaotic World. This week Mark walks us through a pivotal point in the life and ministry life of Christ as well as His disciples. Great crowds are following Jesus and from distances far and wide. Their number is so great Jesus becomes concerned for His safety. Then, after another declaration of His divinity by more demons, Jesus calls 12 men to leave the crowds behind and be with Him. This is the call we all long to hear. How we respond is the key to life today and for all eternity. Read Mark 3:7-19 in advance to prepare for the message, and remember to bring your Study Guides!

He is Good | Jesus is King | Mark 11:1-11 | Coleton Segars

CHRIST COMMUNITY CHURCH MEMPHIS

Coleton preached on Jesus' triumphal entry and how Jesus seeks to make two central claims: 1. Jesus is the Messianic King — the crowd's actions and the fulfillment of prophecy (Zechariah 9:9) show that Jesus openly claims the kingship. He accepts royal honor (“Hosanna,” cloaks, branches) and—when challenged—refuses to silence the praise, even saying that if the people were quiet “the stones would cry out.”  N. T. Wright: “You don't spread cloaks on the road –especially in the dusty, stony Middle East!–for a friend, or even a respected senior member of your family. You do it for royalty. And you don't cut branches off trees, or foliage from the fields, to wave in the streets just because you feel somewhat elated; you do it because you are welcoming a king.” Jesus claim to be King forces a decision: is Jesus merely a helpful healer/teacher, or is He your sovereign King who rules your life? C. S. Lewis: “A really foolish thing that people often say about Jesus is: ‘I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man yet said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic (like a man who says he is a poached egg)—or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” We have to choose to receive or reject Jesus as King. 2. Jesus is not like other kings — unlike Roman triumphs that display conquest, prisoners, and plunder, Jesus rides a colt (a sign of peace and humility) and is followed by people He's healed and freed. His reign looks like liberation, restoration, and sacrificial service, not domination and bondage. David Guzik & Dr. David L. McKenna  “A Roman Triumphal Entry was an honor granted to a Roman general who won a complete and decisive victory and had killed at least 5,000 enemy soldiers. When the general returned to Rome, they had an elaborate parade. As a symbol of bloody conquest, they chose a prancing horse at the head of a processional that included his warriors, a shackled contingent of the conquered people, and an extravagant display of the treasures that the army had taken by force. The procession ended at the arena, where some of the prisoners were thrown to wild animals for the entertainment of the crowd. Now we understand why Jesus is so specific about His entry and the animal He rides. In the symbol of the foal of a donkey, Jesus predicts His role as the King. Jesus makes His triumphal entry on a donkey—a symbol of peace, not war; of humility, not pride. Behind Him comes (not prisoners but), an entourage of disciples and a rabble of common people whom He has healed and set free. They serve as the trophies of His conquest—not won by bloody violence, but by relentless love.” Why it matters: if Jesus is truly your King, He gets to govern all areas of life (money, marriage, speech, media, anger, forgiveness, political loyalties, etc.). That means surrendering personal control and letting his values shape decisions and habits. If you resist that rule you may still experience a Christian language of forgiveness and blessing but not the transforming reality of Jesus' kingdom — a kingdom characterized by love, freedom, reconciliation, generosity, and joy even amid suffering. Coleton closes with a pointed question to wrestle with: Is Jesus your King? and invites people to examine which kingdom's traits actually define their life. ⸻ Practical takeaways     •    The triumphal entry publicly declares Jesus' kingship — it's not optional or merely symbolic.     •    Jesus' kingship is servant and liberating, not coercive or violent.     •    To truly follow him means handing over areas of life where you still rule, and allowing his kingdom fruit (love, peace, patience, generosity, freedom, reconciliation) to grow.     •    Evaluate life by asking: “Whose kingdom am I experiencing here?” If it's not Jesus', return and make Him King. ⸻ Discussion & Small-group / Personal practice questions Use these to help people put the sermon into practice — mix of reflection, confession, and action. 1- Read Mark 11:1–11. What detail(s) jump out at you this time that you hadn't noticed before? Why might those details matter? 2. Coleton says Jesus forces a choice: King or not. What makes accepting Jesus' kingship hard for you personally?  3. Take one area of your life (money, marriage, parenting, social media, anger). Describe which kingdom (Jesus' kingdom or the world's) best describes how you act there. What would one concrete step toward Jesus' rule in that area look like this week? (Give a measurable, time-bound step.) 4. Jesus' kingship carries moral demands (forgiveness, loving enemies, turning the other cheek). Pick one relationship where forgiveness or reconciliation is needed. What is one small, courageous next step you can take to reflect Jesus' reign there? 5. Reflect on the two portraits of kingship (Roman/violent vs. Jesus/humble). Where in your life are you tempted to imitate a worldly kingdom (control, domination, proving self)? How can you choose the way of Christ instead? 6. The sermon notes the kingdom's fruit (love, joy, peace, patience…). Which of those fruits are present in your life now? Which are absent?  7. Coleton said there are places where Jesus is king and places where you still rule. Name one “pocket” of your life where you still want to be sovereign. What would it look like to hand that pocket over to Jesus today? ⸻ Scripture quoted in the sermon Zechariah 9:9–10 (NKJV excerpt used): “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.” Psalm 118:25–26 (referred to as source of “Hosanna” / welcoming the Deliverer). Luke 19:38–40 (quoted in part): “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” … Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” … “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” Philippians 2:6–8 (paraphrase/quote of Paul): “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider His equality with God as something to be used to his own advantage; rather, He made himself nothing… He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”

Mark 1:21-28 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are - the Holy One of God!" 25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching - and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and then obey him." 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.  NIV 84 Lesson Notes Capernaum It is a town on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee and is most likely the hometown of Peter, Andrew, James, John, and Matthew. It is fitting then that it becomes kind of their headquarters for ministry to the region of Galilee. Synagogue It is a place where Jews would gather for instruction. They formed during the time of exile after the temple was destroyed. Wherever there were 10 Jewish men above the age of 12 a synagogue could be formed. Good Theology "Even the demons ace their theology exam." The evil spirit recognizes the humanity of Jesus, the mission of Jesus, and the divinity of Jesus. The Calming of the Storm 39 He rebuked the wind said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" 41 They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? That even the wind and waves obey Him." Three Ways to Respond to Instruction 1 To perceive a sound (hearing) 2 To pay attention (listening) 3 To position under (obeying) - obedience literally means to "hear under" Response to the Instruction of Jesus In order to understand the teaching of Jesus Christ, you have to stand under the teaching of Jesus Christ. The only way to over-come the world is to place yourself under the authority of Jesus Christ. Discussion Questions 1 Icebreaker: For fun: If I asked your friends or family to name a subject of which they thought you were an authority, what might they say and why? 2 In verse 22, the people are impressed because Jesus teaches as an authority. In verse 27, the people are unsettled because Jesus teaches with authority. What is the difference between being an authority and having authority? 3 Read Mark 4:35-41 and compare the interaction between Jesus and the storm with our text this morning. What stands out the most to you as you compare them?  4 There are three different ways to respond to instruction listed in the notes. Discuss the differences between the three responses. How have you seen each of these responses in your own life when it comes to following Jesus?

Notes: Focus verse: Mark 5 A poor, helpless, hopeless woman found what she needed from Jesus. A man of status and prestige, a respected synagogue leaderfound what he needed from Jesus. Read Mark 5:21–29 The young girl had experienced 12 years of relative happiness. The sick woman had experienced 12 years of pain, rejection, and tears. Jairus realized his daughter was dying and he was in a race against time. Jairus believed Jesus could heal and save his daughter's life with a touch.Mark 5:23 James 1:2–3 Tests are an opportunity to grow spiritually, to learn to trust God.Tests are not punitive but purposeful. Many people struggle and grow impatient with the Lord. Jesus does not ask us for our understanding of His ways or timing. He asks for our trust. The woman's condition rendered her to be declared ceremonially unclean. She was penniless as she had spent everything on doctors.Mark 5:26 She desired a healing touch from Jesus and received it.She took hold of what God had for her. Read Mark 5:30–34 Read Mark 5:35–36 It was devastating for Jairus to hear, “…your daughter is dead.” Jairus had to choose which voice to listen to. When a loved one dies unexpectedly, we often blame ourselves. Life and death are in the hands of God not us. Jairus had humbled himself in coming to Jesus. Jesus was always ready and willing to receive and bless those that came to Him. The attitude of the individual determined Jesus's response.Psalm 18:25–27 Unbelief laughs at God's word, but faith believes and receives the miracle. Read Mark 5:41–43 To the woman who was healed Jesus said, “Daughter, be of good courage.” We see a failure; God sees a success. We see the past; God sees the future. We see a woman who is an outcast, Jesus sees a daughter. Jesus is ready to enter into your life and to change you. --- Learn more about Greg Laurie and Harvest Ministries at harvest.org.
