GoodIt's really great on the MX track - Love how smooth the power is and how easy it is to ride there. It's so great that you can dial in the exact amount of power that you want. That is a game changerHigh-speed hill climb bike - it's amazing (not great slow speeds)Love that you are always in the right "gear" because there are no gears. Always right in the power Fastest bike I've ever been on - and it's stable at speed - it feels really plantedThe range on the bike has gotten better with updatesOver-the-air updates are cool; got reverse and forward crawl modes - Brakes are greatForks are great for desert and MX tracksBadFeels heavy when you have to lift the bike - both off-ground and on standsWorst traction on loose, slow climbs - not great in the tight single-trackReally sucks the power fast as the track gets lines into it The range for single-trackNo ClutchThe kickstand is annoying. The charging cable is too short.Support the Show.
Let's have a chat about maintenance items. Nobody tells you that if you want to ride dirt bikes you need to also become a mechanic at at least some level, but it's true. The more things you can do at home in your garage, the more you will ride, the more money you will save, and the better your overall experience is going to be. But there are some things that I won't (or just don't often) do at home. Hope you enjoy. Maybe only 500 or so in the USA each year spread across the entire model range. I'd never seen one in person before getting mineHand built and you can see they are just a little different than the more mainstream, mass produced bikes. I'll tell you what this bike mostly resembles at the end of the podcast here. Stay tuned for that.Support DBC by using the links on my website for Rocky Mountain ATV This is a sweepstakes bike for June I weighed mine at 245 lbs full of fuel. It came with a rad fan installed and a skid plate, but it didn't cover the linkage. It also had Estart and the kickstart. Had hand guards too That is 6 lbs heavier than my 23 KTM 300 XC, but still pretty darn close. It's basically identical in weight to my 22 GasGas EC300Power valve is a little weird since it resets and has to go through it's calibration process each time the bike is started. The dealer mitigated this for me by installing an arming switch which essentially keeps the power on the bike so that it doesn't know it's shut off. I can then use this to keep the bike from cycling the power valve calibration each time.Right off the bat I could tell that the forks and shock are a little stiff for hard enduro or slower riding. My first and only ride so far was on some pretty rocky terrain. I was bouncing all over the place. Removed all clicks and was better, but still not great. Why do all the bike makers assume we are hard charging racers? The bike seems fairly front end biased. Lots of front end traction, but maybe has a tendency to knife the front end down if you arne't careful. Kinda like the rear end is pretty tall. Feels more like a single track/hard enduro bike, than a desert machine. Feels shorter front to back than some of the other bikes I've had recently like the YZ450FX and the KTM 250 XCFoot pegs come out flat... makes it easier for my feel to slip off the pegsMotor is crazy powerful. Very snappy. Easy to lift the front wheel off the ground. Starts really quickly. I need to adjust my idle up. Vibrations still thereBrembo brakes, but my front brake needed to be bled out. I didn't notice it until the night before I went to ride it. Wasn't great on the trail and I have since bled the air out of the line to make it better for my next ride.Plastics are a little sharp in places like on the rear fender. I've nearly cut my hands a couple of times lifting the bike on an off stands. Seems a little more brittle of a plastic than some of the bikes from what I've seen so far. Hands and feet feel close together and the triple clamps don't allow for multiple bar positions. Maybe you can order it with different triple clamps, but mine did'n't come that way. Feels and awful lot like a Sherco 300SE. Like crazy. there I said itSupport the show

Order your Parts from this link to support DBC!https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/?ref=1017Last time I had a YZ450 it was a 2014 model. It's been 9 model years. Right off the bat I was reminded that Yamaha makes these bikes thinking that moto tracks are the baseline and that you won't encounter rocks or roots. It's pretty darn stiff. So, I took off my handlebars (damn clickers are right under the bars) and loosened things up as much as they'd go.Bouncing off everything like a pogo stick at first, but it became more manageable afterwards. If you were racing desert in 4th gear, it's likely really good. But I was going in 2nd gear and 3rd gear through some relatively rocky terrain.Motor - holy crap power! In fact, in the MX power feeling map (the main hot map), it's too much for the terrain I was riding. Talk about wrist and arm fatigue. It just wears you out since every bump or minor twist of the throttle is like when the Saturn 5 rocket ignites to send you to the moon. There is too much power here for mere mortals riding tight trails, or rocky trails. It's just too much hit. I'm sorry, but it's true.Luckily, Yamaha has the power tuner app and I was able to really make a difference to the powerThis might be the best reason to buy the Yamaha over the Honda, KTM, or the Kawi. Ability to make meaningful changes to the power right out on the trail. Why don't they all do this? Makes no sense. When you soften the motor, it also seems to soften the feel of the rear end of the bike. I know it sounds strange, but it's not the first time I've felt it on a bike either. This would satisfy both camps of oil pumpers and non pumpers... just coined that term now!Premix oil in the gas on the XC bikes and oil injection on the Enduro models? Also electronic power valve to give crazy crisp throttle response and delivery - these are the most powerful 2 stroke engines I've ever been around. Are they too hot? Only time will tellLove that you can adjust the idle right on the throttle body - that was so annoying with the TPI bikes.TPI bikes - some tuning required..... TBI bikes nope. Who does that???LikesThis 250 feels more like a 300 - yesterday I was lugging the crap out of it on the trailssimple, carb bike, not many frills... Just runsStarts Really fast - that is a breath of fresh air after coming off some of the other bikesFeels really agile in the front end even though the forks are pretty low in the triple clamps. I could raise them even more and get it to feel even lighter. Since I'm running Mnt single track this summer, I might try that since generally the speeds are slower there.Comes with factory installed radiator fan - great! It runs a lot when riding the slower stuff, don't get to program when it comes on, but it also shuts off when the ignition stops. Good.Don't like as muchI honestly think the suspension is valved a touch stiff for the really rocky nasty stuff - it's more in line for faster desert stuff, but the geometry feels like it's designed to go slowVibrates a lot more than the counterbalanced Austrian bikes - you get used to it though.Clutch feels heavier than on a KTM/Husky/GasGas bike. Finger fatigue More of a cramped feel in the cockpit. I think it would be great if you are 5'10" and under. I'm 6 feel and it feels too small.Pegs take getting used to, but I installed the Fastway pegs and they create another problem with my feet - pressure pointDon't like the Michelin tires that come on the bikeGrip compound is hard for me. I will likely try to find some short bar risers to get a little more comfort therehas great bottom end power, but seems to sign off quicker, or get flatter quicker than my KTM 250 XC. Being cold on a ride can really dampen things. I can think back in a number of rides when the cold really took the fun out of things. Most of the time, this happens at the beginning or the ending of a day. We have some real challenges:early morningslate eveningsHigh elevation amplifies the temps swingsUsually soaked with sweat throughout all my clothingreally slow parts with high heart rate where body generates a lot of heatThen a really fast section that makes me feel totally hypothermicthen followed by another slow section to keep me from freezingTorso - Lots of small layers that are easy to remove and put back on. Helps to prevent chaffing of my legs with the knee guards or knee braces I'm wearingMoisture wicking in the summera little extra insulation in the winter. but I don't do more than one layer so that I'm not getting bunch up issues. I don't find that I lose a ton of heat out of my lower bodyGood Winter pantshttps://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/riding-gear/fly-racing-lightweight-base-layer-pant-p?ref=1017BootsI used to think that I should make an extra attempt to keep my feet dry when it's cold. Don't drop them in a river. while this is a good idea, my socks are COMPLETELY SOAKED when I get back to the truck most of the time because of sweat... so I don't worry about it as much anymore. I just keep a fresh pair of socks back at the truck to change into. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/dirtbikechannel)
Here is a rebroadcast of an episode we did a couple of years ago about getting stronger with strength training and what that might do for us.Let's do a thought experiment. Imagine what your life would be like if you were the same size and weight, but you were 10 times stronger than you are now. Everything you do would be easier. Picking up the kids, getting groceries, doing chores around the house, and yes... riding your dirt bike would be easier. You would be more durable, have less aches and pains, possibly prevent injuries, all while looking and feeling better about yourself. When Bill Hannon reached out to me with this thought experiment, he hooked me for a chat. Of course we don't want to become NFL linebackers, but could many of us stand to become a little stronger? I know I could. Bill is a mechanical engineer turned strength and conditioning coach, oh and he's a dirt bike rider too. That gives him a unique perspective on this subject. I hope you enjoy the conversation. A lot has changed in that time. Most of it has been me. We get more efficient on the bikes and while I'm certainly not a top level rider, I'm also not a beginner anymore. The first 450 I had nearly snuffed out my desire to ride. The second one was better, but it was still wresting a bear. Now starting my 11th year (depending on how we count), the CRF450RX is like growing up and meeting that old bully from high school. This time, you aren't scared of him. This time, you are looking at him eye to eye without fear and without pretense. You've grown, you've gotten stronger, and you have confidence. If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me about riding alone, I'd have more nickels than the average person. The truth is that I ride alone all the time. I take precautions to mitigate risk, but at the end of the day, we are always managing risks with everything we do. For me, the benefits outweigh the risks because I get recharged when I'm in solitude in the mountains or desert in a way that I don't get when I'm in a group of people. When I'm alone, I feel things differently. I see things differently. I experience the world in a way that really helps to center me. In short, I love it. Yes, it's okay to ride alone. I mean, you are in more danger driving to the riding location than you are when you are riding, but there is usually someone there to call 911 on the highways and byways. In the wild, it might be a while. I'm okay with that. Are you? Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/dirtbikechannel)

If you'd like to enter to win one of the three motorcycles I'm giving away, visit my website before June 30th 2021. https://dirtbikechannel.com/Motors - Ultimate winner is the YamahaBoth motors pull really hard and are a ton of fun. YZ250FX has an advantage with the Yamaha Power tuner App - so cool to be able to change maps that way. Better than the Modules you change on the KX. Yes, I know you can buy the Kawi Calibration kit, but how many people spend the few $700 for it?Suspension - TieBoth of the 250 versions of these bike use KYB forks. Both of them are valved a bit more for going fast, or riding some smaller tracks than for doing slower enduro riding. Both bikes give me an incredible amount of confidence and feel. Chassis - TieBoth bikes give me confidence with a super "planted" and settled feelI love the narrow feeling of the KX. Feels super narrow when riding it. I like that Kawi lets you move the foot-pegs a bit. I wish they moved back more, but it's a start and I wish all bike makers allowed this. Both kickstands sucked. The Yami has that huge spring that caught on my boots. The KX is sticking out like some sort of out rigger. Kawi uses a "thin" clutch lever and brake lever. You notice it right off the bat and I thought I'd hate it, but it didn't bother me on the trails. They both use Nissin brakes, and while they are sometimes a little more Grabby than a Brembo, I ultimately have too much issue. The main thing is it's harder for me to feather the rear brake on the Kawi than some other bikes. Kawasaki KX250X has hydro clutchTransmission - YamahaYamaha uses the WR 6 speed transmission. Although it's not exactly what I want, it's better than MX gearing for off road ridingKawasaki uses 5 speed MX gearing. Isn't too bad for single track riding, but shows it's short legs when riding faster, more open terrain. Becomes an issue when connecting trails. Needs another gear.Air Box - YamahaThis Kawasaki air-box is so dumb. Needs 8mm and 10mm to remove air-box cover. Then the filter is the hardest filter to change of any modern bike I've ever had. Meet a couple of brothers with an awesome company they are building inside the moto community. They have the coolest names for oil that you've ever heard. I'm certainly going to place an order soon and try it out. Based on what I learned in this conversation, I'm going to start giving some of my money to these guys trying to do something good for the ole USA. A big thanks to John for coming on the podcast. Over the years, John and I have emailed back and forth several times. After the email he sent me in March, I figured it was time that we recorded a podcast. With a little patience, we were able to make it happen in person at my home office. We have some of the most incredible people with interesting stories in our community. Thanks to Sam Bennion for joining me in this discussion today! How do we mentally prepare to hit bigger and bigger obstacles and challenges so that we grow in our abilities?Incremental Growth - Baby stepssmall logs, small dropsStop for a moment and realize the bike can do thisHow do we draw the line to know when to stop or when we really are out of our ability?Peer pressure?Going back to an obstacle later and conquering it is really rewardingLeave the obstacle on a high note if possibleHow do we face the mental challenges of an obstacle we are afraid of or a trail we have heard about and we are afraid of trying? How do we deal with failure, when we try and fail? How do we deal with getting hurt when we ride?Does being too timid or cautious actually make it easier to get hurt or get hurt again?having your mind in the right placeHow do we find riders and riding groups that push us and is that a good thing to be in a group where you are being pushed? On the flip side, are we in a group that does the same rides over and over and we are stagnant in our growth because of the group we ride in?Are we rushing through the ride for the Podium at the end?Are we looking for fun things to do along the way?Are we messing around and working on skills? We need to STOP telling ourselves that we can't do that and stop taking the easiest line!It means we are indeed willing to fall and fail, even in front of others! It means we are willing to scratch up our bikes and brake parts, that is part of the price to be paid for higher confidence. What about the sheer satisfaction of overcoming a fear or obstacle that has troubled us?Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/dirtbikechannel)
Fuel/Oil Ratio vs Fuel Air/RatioFuel/Oil ratio is the amount of oil you are mixing in the gas. It's in your gas can32:1 is a lot of oil - thick fuel50:1 is less oil - thinner fuel80:1 is even less oil - thinnest fuelPick something that works for you and stick with that. We'll fine tune the mix with our fuel/air RatioFuel/Air Ratio is fine tuned inside the carburetor with Jets and needles. I've got oil running down my silencer and I"m running my bike 32:1. I guess that I'm running it too Rich, right?Well yeah, but it's not because of your oil mix. You are too "rich" but you need to take fuel away from the bike by allowing less of it to enter the cylinder of your bike.Denser air (more of it) makes your bike fuel lean (less fuel) because now you have more air/pressure but the same amount of fuelDensity altitude is what we are really tuning for.Aviation - Density altitude is pressure altitude corrected for nonstandard temperature. As temperature and altitude increase, air density decreases.Air pressure is reduced at higher elevations - Elevation goes up - bike runs " fuel rich"temperature effects our carbs - temp goes up - bike runs "fuel rich"Pilot Circuit - idle up to about 1/8th air screw for fine tuning3/4 of turn out to 2.5 "turns out" is a fine rangeIf you have to run the bike at less than 3/4 of a turns out, you will need a bigger pilot jetIf you need to run it more than 2.5 turns out, then you need a smaller pilot jetNeedle Circuit 1/8th to 3/4 throttle - Where it's at!uses clips to fine tune hereMoving the clip UP the needle will allow it to drop down further in the carb which restricts fuel (makes it leaner)Moving the clip DOWN on the needle keeps the needle higher which add fuel (makes it richer)Main Circuit 3/4 throttle and upthere is certainly some cross over here and I'm not saying that it will ONLY effect you at 3/4 throttle, but this is where it mostly comes into play.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/dirtbikechannel)

7.3 HoursI feel really comfortable on the bike - familiarLove the electric startBike is really light - 220 lbs - feels like there is nothing there sometimes. This is a blessing and a curse - Can put the bike anywhere, but it's moving around down there and you have to flow with it. Swapping from KX250X and the 125 XC yesterday - made the KX feel heavyCarbs - Used 3 carbs already on the bike - lot of tuning already - SC2 carb working the best of all of them so far. It's got plenty of power.... as long as you stay in the power - not much power down lowThis thing rips in the desert and has no trouble lofting the front wheel over ditches as long as you are in the meat of the power.Highly recommend this bike to several peopleTeenagers moving up to a full sized bikeNewer riders wanting to refine their riding skills and clutch skillsSeasoned riders looking to have a change of pace bike and sharpen the skills that might have dulled over time. - You have to get after it!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/dirtbikechannel)
Winterizing a dirt bike was on my topic list from listeners. I typed out a few bullet points and then did a google search for this to see if I saw other others, and my video from 2 years ago was the first hit. I forgot that I even did a video on it! I did see that Rocky Mountain did a video similar to mine a year earlier in 2017, but I didn't watch that until today. I don't watch very many other dirt bike videos. I try to avoid it when possible, but I do like to watch some of those RMATV videos.Hope you enjoy the show! Please use my links for RMATV!https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/l/Dirt-Bike-Channel?ref=1017Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/dirtbikechannel)
Here we go with my full review of the 2020 Sherco 300 SEF Factory. It's certainly one of my all time favorite 4 stroke enduro bikes. It's got the best fork valving of any of the bikes I've ridden in the last year. In the video I will point out several things I really love about the bike and some things that they really need to improve upon.Hopefully this will be helpful to many of you out there. First 1.5 hours on the bike. I will have at least 5 more months with the bike so stay tuned, but here are some first notes.Bike feels REALLY Narrow between your legs - like it's not eve there. That is a great feeling. Was wearing my knee braces and still could barely feel the bike. Once I turned the fork compression all the way out, the front forks worked pretty well for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear riding that I was doing today. It didn't defect badly when I was in 1st gear for those few times. Probably a good mix for a go fast bike. Took 3 clicks of compression out the the slow speed comp on the rear. This seemed to give the bike a more planted feeling for the choppy rocks and braking bumps I was encountering. The motor is very snappy and "racy". Feels might more high strung like the YZ250FX did. Has decent torque down low. Didn't stall the bike on technical climbs, but I was REALLY careful with my clutch work since it doesn't seem like it's got the grunt of the Sherco 300 SEF. Makes the front end feel pretty light and playful. More playful feel than the Sherco, although if I'm going to spend a full day in the slow stuff, give me the Sherco.Loves to corner and carve around berms. Gave me confidence in my front end.Didn't feel the issue on the 5 speedFuel tank too smallSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/dirtbikechannel)
I want to thank my amazing wife Karen for joining me on this episode and giving us her reasons she thinks that riding dirt bikes is a good thing for many people. These are Karen's top 10 reasons to let your husband buy a dirt bike. The first three were her top 3 reasons, the rest are in no particular order. 1. It makes him a better man. He gets to recharge and gives him something to be proud of. This translates over into other areas of his life.2. Keeps him in shape!3. It’s a great way for his to bond with the kids.4. It keeps him mentally sharp.5. He is less likely to be addicted to substances when he’s addicted to his dirt bike.6. He gets to get out and appreciate the beautiful earth we live in and see things most people will never see. 7. It helps him with problem solving, because that IS a skill. 8. Dirt Bikes keep him young. 9. It’s a good stress reliever.10. It’s not as dangerous as you think. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/dirtbikechannel)
I don’t want to own a good dirt bike… I want a freaking GREAT DIRT BIKE!These days Every major manufacturer (and even some of the really small ones) makes a good dirt bike. Some of them only make MX bikes, and while I don’t ride MX, I think it’s safe to say that 3 out of the 4 Japanese brands make fantastic MX bikes. As we move more into the “off road” or enduro bikes, there are even more choices since there are more of us riding these bikes. Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, KTM, Husvquarna, Sherco, Beta, GasGas, TM designs….. all these brands make GOOD enduro bikes. They all do. But who makes a GREAT bike? And who gets to decide makes differentiate a good bike from a great bike? Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/dirtbikechannel)
