Oceano Dunes at Pismo Beach is the only place in California where you can legally drive on the beach. For over 25 years, Jim Suty and Friends of Oceana Dunes have been fighting to keep it that way. Jimmy and Tyler sit down with Jim to talk about what’s happening now — and what’s been happening for a long time. This one covers a lot of ground. Jim walks through the history of the snowy plover fight that started around 2001, the dust pollution battle that took center stage around 2019–2020, and the new issue that’s surfaced after all of that: SVR (the State Vehicular Recreation Area that manages the dunes) never completed the Incidental Take Permit for the snowy plover that should have been finalized as part of the original mitigation. The ITP is the document that allows recreation to continue in habitat where an endangered species is present, provided land managers mitigate impact to acceptable levels. Without it, the dunes are exposed. And because SVR was always reacting to the next crisis — the next budget cut, the next complaint from the Coastal Commission, the next thing coming down from the state level — the ITP kept getting pushed down the priority list until it didn’t get done. Jimmy and Tyler dig into why this keeps happening — turnover in land manager leadership, no consistent long-term relationships with the local OHV community, a reactive management culture that never gets ahead of anything. The parallels to what Jimmy and Tyler see with El Dorado National Forest, Tahoe National Forest, and the Rubicon are everywhere. The dust fight is a good-news story worth hearing in full. During COVID, when the dunes were closed and no OHVs were running, Friends of Oceana Dunes commissioned studies that showed the dust particulate in the town of Oceano was not being caused by OHV activity on the dunes. The science that the APCD and the Coastal Commission had been using to justify closures and restrictions was wrong. Friends of Oceana Dunes fought it in court, won, and the APCD was ruled to have been incorrect — with money that had been spent on dust mitigation going back toward recreational purposes. Tyler and Jimmy hold this up as exactly what litigation looks like when it works. On where the money needs to come from: Tyler makes the argument that $20 to a litigation organization like Friends of Oceana Dunes or Blue Ribbon Coalition does more long-term work than $20 to a trail maintenance volunteer fund. Both matter. But if you can only pick one, he argues the scale is in favor of litigation. The numbers are striking — Jim mentions that 1.5 to 2.5 million people visit Oceana Dunes per year. If every one of them gave a quarter, Friends of Oceana Dunes would have a $500K–$750K operating budget. That’s how underfunded these organizations are relative to the scale of the impact they’re having. Also in this episode: the new California OHV certification bill being pushed by KORVA (which has passed its first stages of legislation), the “two knuckleheads” problem and why bad actors in OHV get more press than bad actors in every other outdoor recreation category, why the Coastal Commission tried to stop Friends of Oceana Dunes from picking up trash on the beach, the OHV super PAC joke that maybe wasn’t entirely a joke, and Jimmy’s personal note about his college memories at Pismo. Closing call to action: time, talent, or treasures. Find your carrot, find the organization working on it, and put something toward it. **Find Friends of Oceana Dunes:** Website: https://www.oceanodunes.org/Donate Today: https://www.paypal.com/donate?token=XpwAwnzV8dxTRn3lCzpU2W8PtfcpioHxik3tAvbkFMfOIHbNvXjXH22QILbpr6ixt8Xs15fStatskAR3Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/friendsofoceanodunes/Desert Fest: https://www.oceanodunes.org/2025/09/24/march-2026-dezertfest/ SnailTrail4x4 Discord: https://discord.gg/yFyFFkQbuyCome hang out with us on the SnailTrail4x4 Discord — it’s the easiest way to connect with Tyler and Jimmy directly, chat with fellow offroad enthusiasts, and get first access to Group Buys and Treasure Hunt token drops. Ben breaks down the rescission of the BLM Public Lands Rule, the Roadless Rule fight, Moab route reassessments, the San Rafael Swell, WEMO closures in the Western Mojave Desert, and why the minimization criteria could become a serious threat to OHV access nationwide. They also talk about local advocacy groups, fieldwork, the Outdoor Americans with Disabilities Act, and why off-roaders need to submit meaningful comments instead of assuming someone else has it covered. If you care about public land access, trail closures, Jeep trails, overlanding, OHV routes, or keeping backcountry roads open for people who cannot simply hike in, this episode is one to share.

Five listener accounts. Five different parts of the country. Five different decades. And in every one of them, something out there showed an ordinary person, in no uncertain terms, that they were not at the top of the food chain. This episode isn't about quick glimpses through the trees. It's about the slow encounters. The ones where something took its time, where it watched, where it made a deliberate decision about whether or not to let the witness walk away. The first account comes from Dale, a lifelong hunter from Sequim, Washington, who was twenty-three years old in October of 1978 when he climbed into a drainage off the Dosewallips before first light and saw something standing in the fog at the base of the slope. Sixty yards away. Gray-skinned, slope-browed, motionless in a way that no living thing should be able to manage.Dale walked out of those woods that morning and didn't return to any forest for twenty-six years. From there we move to Karen, a young woman from Elkins, West Virginia, who was twenty-four years old in September of 1993 and out for a solo overnight on a loop she'd hiked many times before. At two in the morning, every insect in the Monongahela went silent, something pressed a hand the size of a dinner plate against the wall of her tent, and the heat of a living body radiated through the nylon inches from her face. The next morning she saw what had been standing over her.Brent rides next, a heavy equipment operator out of Athens, Ohio, who was on the OHV trails in the Wayne National Forest with his buddy Cody on a clear October afternoon in 2019. They heard whoops trade across the saddle of a ridge. They turned around to leave. And on the way back down the trail they'd just ridden, they found a fourteen-inch oak laid across the two-track that had not been there forty minutes earlier, with no root ball, drag marks in the dirt, and something watching them from behind a white oak thirty yards uphill. The fourth account is told secondhand by Katelyn, the granddaughter of a northern Wisconsin trapper named Cal, who walked his line on a state forest tract north of the Bois Brule River in October of 1972 and found his sets methodically disabled. A foothold trap hung ten feet up in a hemlock. A marten cubby pried off a maple, turned a hundred and eighty degrees, and re-nailed backwards. A young whitetail arranged on the moss above an otter set, legs folded, head balanced upright, like a chess piece placed for him to find. Then three wood knocks from three different directions. Then a tall, lean, gray-haired figure standing between two pines in the dawn light, watching him with an expression Cal could only describe as tired. The episode closes with Marisol, a freelance photographer who in late August of 2015 hiked into a small alpine lake in the Trinity Alps Wilderness of northern California to shoot the milky way. The wind shifted across the cirque, the smell of a wet animal carried over the water, and through her two-hundred-millimeter zoom she watched something kneel at the far shore, cup water in its palm, drink, and then turn its head and look directly into her lens. A face with a heavy brow, a square jaw, and a small but distinct chin. Eight feet tall when it stood. She broke camp in the fading light and hiked six miles back to the trailhead in the dark, and she has never reviewed the photographs she took that afternoon. What links these five accounts isn't the description of the creature. The descriptions vary. Reddish brown. Gray. Nearly black. Heavy jaw, no chin. Narrower jaw, slight chin. Lean and starved-looking. Massive and barrel-chested. What links them is the aftermath.Every one of these people rearranged their lives around what happened. Hunting careers ended. Backpacking ended. Photography careers pivoted indoors. Decades of silence followed by a single attempt to put it down somewhere, with someone, before the memory had to go to the grave with them.If you've been carrying something of your own, the inbox is open.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? Send us a textCALL TO ACTION DEADLINE: September 15, 2025www.blueribboncoalition.org/hammersHost Big Rich Klein sits down with BlueRibbon Coalition's Ben Burr and longtime Johnson Valley advocate Shannon Welch to unpack a fast-moving proposal that could reshape recreation at the Hammers. The U.S. Marine Corps has requested permanent Special Use Airspace (SUA) over Johnson Valley—from the ground up to 8,000 feet—split into four corridors (A–D). While framed as limited use, the Environmental Assessment (EA) seeks a permanent designation via the FAA, not a temporary, training-only restriction. What's at stake - Medevac and search-and-rescue flights for everyday users, not just races - Backcountry aviation, personal drones, and private landowners (20,000 acres impacted) - Commercial filming/testing (e.g., Ford), ranching operations, and year-round OHV access - The integrity of a Congressionally Designated OHV Area and its $71M local economic impact. A precedent of closure-by-airspace has been seen at White Sands and Yuma Proving Ground.Community action - Comment deadline: September 15 - Submit via blueribboncoalition.org/hammers – Blue Ribbon guarantees your comments will be shared. Share widely with your OHV, aviation, ranching, and local business networksKey points - EA claims “no significant impact,” but provides no enforceable safeguards - Marines told some stakeholders “60 days/year,” yet the EA seeks permanent SUA – Blue Ribbon's reasonable alternative: a 1,500-foot buffer from ground/elevation to protect civilian useSupport the show
