This is Eric Stark with The Smart RV'er Podcast, Delivering the smarts you need to enjoy the freedom of the RV Lifestyle without the fear of breaking down! Enjoying the RV Life: Today, Alexis and I will talk about something crucial for all you RV enthusiasts out there: winterizing your RV. Winter can be tough on your RV, and it's not just about protecting the freshwater system. There are other aspects to consider to ensure your RV stays in great shape during those cold months. Inspect the Seals and Roof: Check all the seals around windows, doors, and roof vents. Ensure they are intact and not cracked or damaged. Replace any seals showing wear and tear to prevent drafts and moisture from getting inside. Clean and Store Your RV Thoroughly: Give your RV a good cleaning, both inside and out. This will help prevent dirt and grime from causing damage during the winter months. Once it's clean, find a secure storage location for your RV if possible, away from the elements. Tire Care: Maintain proper tire pressure and consider using tire covers to protect them from the cold. Cold weather can cause tires to lose pressure, and keeping them properly inflated will prevent damage. Also, occasionally move your RV to avoid flat spots on the tires. Propane Tanks: Shut off the propane supply and make sure all appliances are off. If you're storing your RV for an extended period, it's a good idea to remove the propane tanks and store them in a safe place. Battery Maintenance: If you're not using a trickle charger or solar panels to keep your RV's battery charged, it's essential to remove the battery and store it in a warm, dry place. Cold temperatures can damage batteries. Interior Preparations: Empty out all perishable items from your refrigerator and pantry. Leave the refrigerator and freezer doors open to prevent mold and odors. Also, open all cabinet doors to promote air circulation and prevent moisture buildup. Water System: Drain your water tanks, water heater, and all water lines. You can use RV antifreeze to flush the water lines thoroughly to prevent freezing. Don't forget to drain and clean the black and gray water tanks too. Heating System: If you have an onboard heating system, make sure it's in good working condition. It'll help keep the inside of your RV from freezing during the winter. Rodent Control: Seal any openings or gaps where critters could enter your RV. Mice and other pests love to seek shelter in warm places during the winter. Regular Check-Ins: Even if your RV is in storage, it's a good idea to check on it periodically. Ensure that everything is in order and that there are no unexpected issues. Winterizing your RV properly can save you a lot of headaches and repair costs down the road. Remember, it's not just about protecting your plumbing; it's about preserving your entire RV for many more adventures to come. So, take the time to prepare your RV for winter, and you'll be all set to hit the road again when the weather warms up. Thanks for tuning in, and happy RVing! Staying On The Road:
