Education has reached a tipping point: we cannot use outdated practices and expect students to thrive. Education Rx was born out of a desire to support change in the public education system. Education should be engaging, have real world value, and be equitable for ALL students; no matter race, socio-economic status, or ability level. And, it should be FREE! We don't have all the answers, but we are searching out experts and real people that hold a piece of the puzzle, and we will be giving them a chance to share their perspective on what is broken. Then we will follow it up with what is WORKING! We want to help start conversations that will help us move towards educational reform that will move our nation's public education system forward. Dr. Pasi Sahlberg, lifelong educator, academic, policy maker, and author, hails from Finland and has been a driving force in educational reform in his home country and throughout the world. Dr. Pedro Noguera talks with Hollye and Shannon about inclusion from the lens of meeting every student where they are at. Teaching students the way they learn, not making students learn the way you teach. He reinforces the importance of relationship between educators and students. We, as educators, need to start by honoring the cultures of our students–their language, their traditions, their values are precious. We can help students find motivation and enthusiasm for learning through providing opportunities for creativity and a sense of success when they are engaging in problem solving. The National Assessment of Educational Progress, otherwise known as the Nation's Report Card, was first given in 1969 with the purpose of measuring the educational achievement and progress of the nation's students at established grades and ages in relation to the content of NAEP frameworks. Every two years, a sampling of schools across the nation are selected for testing: students are chosen at random to participate in NAEP. Every student has the same chance of being chosen—regardless of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, disability, status as an English learner, or any other factors. (Beginning in 1990, these tests were made voluntary, and parents can opt their student(s) out if they do not want them to participate.) Historically, all 50 states, and the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Education Activity, participate in this testing. Students in grades 4, 8 and 12 are randomly selected to participate in testing in the areas of civics, economics, geography, mathematics, music and visual arts, reading, science, technology and engineering literacy, U.S. history, and writing. Student performance is reported on National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scales, which run 0–300 (for most subjects) or 0–500 (mathematics and reading only). The focus of testing is on reading, mathematics, and (12th grade) science.Our country saw trends of math and science scores declining in the 1970's, then rising during the 1980's and 1990's. In the early 2000's, limited growth was seen, and in the 2010's we appeared to plateau. In 2020, NAEP testing was just beginning when CoVid hit, and the testing was put on hold. In 2022 testing resumed, with shocking scores being released in October 2022. These scores demonstrated that not was there a trend of decline in scores, but on average students had lost between 2 and 9 months worth of learning! This may not sound significant: 2 months? Well, in 2 months my student will catch up. WRONG! Learning continued to move forward leaving students who were behind getting further and further behind, not catching up. The scores that came in October 2022 demonstrated catastrophic declines.This episode Dr. Andrew Ho, professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and psychometrician, joins us to discuss NAEP scores and what they actually mean! Dr. Ho has served on the governing boards for the National Council on Measurement in Education and the National Assessment of Educational Progress. His research is known for his research documenting the misuse of proficiency-based statistics in state and federal policy analysis. Dr. Angela Griffin, Washington Board of Education member, Preschool educator and director, and educator of educators, shares how Washington state was able to keep daycares and preschools going during CoVid. She shares how maintaining these programs supported families, but also addressed the social emotional needs of early learners. These programs ensured foundational skills for students that resulted in better outcomes in kindergarten and first grade.On the other end of the spectrum, we have high school students who literally "disappeared" during CoVid. Non-traditional students, and/or students who did not have support during CoVid "dropped out" by simply stopping to attend. In the subsequent years, many schools have not found, or even looked, for these students to ensure their completion of high school. Dr. Griffin shares some of the systems and resources that Washington, and other states, including Utah, have implemented that are making a positive impact. Within public education, there is a classification of "Affective Education," or students with emotional & behavioral disorders. These students may have mental health issues, such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism, or other diagnoses that include an emotional/behavioral element. This population of students may have average to above average academic skills, but they are sidelined by their struggles with managing the classroom environment, emotional regulation, and/or social interactions. It is not uncommon for these students to be overlooked when we are talking about the impact of virtual learning or social emotional learning because we may not see how this additional layer of complexity is directly impacting them and their educational experience.In this episode, we talk with 3 seasoned educators who work directly with students who fall within this category. Celeste Dunlap, an elementary special education teacher who specializes in working with students with emotional & behavioral disorders. Ryan Montgomery, who has worked as an educational assistant/paraprofessional and teacher for secondary students with emotional and behavioral disorders. Lastly, Elyssa Clark, Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who works with students with emotional and behavioral disorders of all ages in schools, community, and home settings. They share their professional experiences and insights on the ways that CoVid has impacted this population students. Celeste gives a clear, simplified explanation of what "Social Emotional Learning" IS, and what it is NOT."How bad can it be?" you may ask. After participating in virtual learning, many of these students are struggling with in person classroom expectations: rolling around on the floor in the middle of a lesson. Leaving the classroom without warning. Celeste, Ryan and Elyssa share how these students are demonstrating that they experienced trauma during CoVid. How we ALL experienced a collective trauma. And how education is impacted by the fallout.As test scores nationwide indicate the devastating impact of CoVid, these scores also tell us that current methodology is proving ineffective. Is it time to consider non-traditional ideas and methods as options? If what we are doing is NOT working, maybe it is reasonable to consider ideas that outside of the box. Should we entertain the idea of lowering expectations and finding a baseline that ensures engagement and success for all students; then "scaffold" expectations (and academic activities) to increase skill over time? In this episode we talk about the mental health impacts of CoVid on young adults and adult students in higher education programs. We discuss how virtual learning was impacted, as well as relationships with peers, and basic living (including sleep-wake cycles, motivation, and the quality of life) were all impacted by CoVid and virtual learning. Looking at how depression and anxiety have been on the rise for many students during this time period as a direct result of CoVid and how it impacted the college experience. Add to that financial, housing, and connecting with other students for studying ....many students struggled to keep their heads above water.We then talk with university professor and associate vice president at Highlands University in New Mexico, Dr. Denise Montoya, about how she engaged students in learning in such a way that they did not "fizzle out", but rather deeply connect with their education. She shares her powerful tools, including a system she created called "AACCES" that helps educators create a culture of learning whether "in person" or virtual. In episode 1 we talked about the Social Emotional Crisis that was building pre-CoVid, and was amplified during CoVid. This crisis is impacting academics, but looking deeper, it is causing many teachers to feel defeated. If teachers are feeling hopeless, their students will feel hopeless. How can we learn or take in academic knowledge if we are in a state of trauma or hopelessness? SEL (social emotional learning) has been identified as a crucial component for repairing public education. There are many SEL curriculums out there. But should SEL be a "curriculum?" Or a way of being that is seamlessly woven into education throughout the day? Episode 2 explores an SEL program called Breathe for Change, and its impact on teachers and students. Ultimately, this program is leading to academic gains that reinforce just how vital social emotional skills are in the learning process. This episode explores the hidden impact of CoVid on teachers and educators: what is it? What are the long term effects? What have educators learned from CoVid? Where can we focus our efforts now to support educators and students in creating more effective learning environments that will lead to improved academic results?This episode sets the tone for this season. Shining a light on the fallout from CoVid for educators, students and families. Public education is at a tipping point: do we continue with the "same old" practices? Or do we push forward and pioneer new, more equitable methods? Dr. Beard lays out key elements of how CoVid, and the murder of George Floyd, put educators in the position of being first responders. Most of these educators were not trained or provided appropriate supports to fill this role. Some found that they were overwhelmed and fled education all together. Some found alternative ways to be an educator, although they left the traditional public school setting. And some found silver linings that helped them succeed. What were those silver linings? How do we replicate those successes, building them into our current practices to support students and teachers in catch up learning. Education Rx seeks to identify where public education is falling short, and highlight individuals, schools, districts, and other agencies that have found positive, effective ways to move education in new directions that have the potential for meaningful outcomes. We need to educate ourselves, so we can change the world! We can do better!!
