Coaching Conversations with Jim Knight

In this episode of Coaching Conversations, I have the privilege of speaking with Dr. Pasi Sahlberg, one of the most respected voices in educational policy and reform. Our conversation explores the evolution of Finland's education system and the powerful lessons it holds for educators everywhere.Dr. Sahlberg shares how Finland built an equitable education system by prioritizing trust, teacher professionalism, and autonomy. Instead of relying on high-stakes accountability, Finnish schools focus on creating calm, supportive environments where teachers can truly engage students in deep learning. We also discuss the challenges of standardized testing, the importance of student agency, and why effective teaching isn't about theatrics—it's about meaningful, lasting connections.Throughout our discussion, one theme remains clear: great education is built on strong relationships. When teachers feel trusted and students feel valued, real learning happens. I hope this conversation sparks new insights for you and encourages all of us to think more deeply about how we create schools where both students and educators thrive.Thank you for being a part of our community. Feedback: We love hearing from you! As you'll hear, much of the conversations challenged the narrow meaning of effectiveness and improvement and pushed against the so-called what works agenda. Poland’s kids rejoice over new rules against homework. Teachers and parents aren’t so sure

Ola Kozak is celebrating. The 11-year-old, who loves music and drawing, expects to have more free time for her hobbies after Poland's government ordered strict limits on the amount of homework in the lower grades. "Most people in my class in the morning would copy the work off someone who had done the homework or would copy it from the internet. So it didn't make sense," she said. The government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk enacted the ban against required homework last month amid a broad discussion about the need to modernize Poland's education system, which critics say puts too much emphasis on rote learning and homework, and not enough on critical thinking and creativity. Under the decree, teachers are no longer to give required homework to kids in the first to third grades. In grades four to eight, homework is now optional and doesn't count toward a grade. Not everyone likes the change–and even Ola's parents are divided. "If there is something that will make students enjoy school more, then it will probably be good both for the students and for the school," said her father, Pawel Kozak. His wife, Magda Kozak, was skeptical. "I am not pleased, because (homework) is a way to consolidate what was learned," she said. "It helps stay on top of what the child has really learned and what's going on at school." Debates over the proper amount of homework are common around the globe. While some studies have shown little benefit to homework for young learners, other experts say it can help them learn how to develop study habits and academic concepts. Education Minister Barbara Nowacka said she was prompted by research on children's mental health. Of the various stresses children face, she said, "the one that could be removed fastest was the burden of homework." Pasi Sahlberg, a prominent Finnish educator and author, said the value of homework depends on what it is and how it is linked to overall learning. The need for homework can be "very individual and contextual." "We need to trust our teachers to decide what is good for each child," Sahlberg said. ”The luxury that Finland has had, is that we have always been coming a few years behind Sweden.” Citat från Pasi Sahlberg i avsnittet:  ”Why are some of the education policies and ideas spreading so easily?”  ”When Finland changed, it changed because of the profession. Because educators, teachers and principals used their voice and their expertise to help the government and policymakers to understand what needs to be done next. Here teachers and the profession doesn't mean anything. Everything is about the parents.” Beyond just talking about rabbits shitting outside their cages, in this episode of The Future Is A Mixtape, Jesse & Matt will provide a sustained analysis on Michael Moore's Where to Invade Next. Not only was this the finest documentary released in 2015, but the film is Michael Moore's magnum opus without parallel or peer in his storied and fecund oeuvre. After shooting and releasing a misshapen and badly organized documentary Capitalism: A Love Story in 2009, it seemed that the director had lost his vision or was in some sleepy and lonesome lull. But it's important to remember that the same lull in vision during his early career with Canadian Bacon (1995) and The Big One (1997) also appeared right before his breakout films, Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11. By going invisible for six years after the release Capitalism: A Love Story, shooting in ‘secret locations' unknown to anyone, Michael Moore came back fully revitalized and more sophisticated in his rhetoric and tactics of persuasion, by rejecting partisanship and labels in order to reveal why other countries just simply do it better when it comes to solving daunting societal problems, such as work-stress, malnutrition, K-12 educational failures, student debt, work-life balance, drug addiction, prisons, as well as the loss of women's rights and demanding government reforms. Jesse & Matt hope to tell you why Where to Invade Next is so vital to revving up America's rudderless drift. They will also describe why the film's uses of framing and persuasion are worth stealing--especially given the left's tragic history at winning anything of lasting consequence amidst the Drum & Death March of Neoliberalism.
