October is AAC Awareness Month! Today's guest, Chris Bugaj, is the co-host of the *Talking with Tech* podcast, which explores the world of AAC, inclusive design, and the creators, providers, and users behind these systems. As an SLP, Chris realized early in his career that he had a knack for technology, which led to his role on his district's Assistive Technology Team for Inclusive Learning.During our chat, we discussed the history of early AAC devices, their flaws, and how these limitations impacted our ability to set effective goals. We're so fortunate that technology and access to it have improved dramatically for our learners over the past two decades. We also touched on the concept of a growth mindset—a philosophy focused on breaking free from fixed ideas about abilities and embracing the "power of yet," ensuring we don't limit any learners in any way.Chris has his formula for professional development in AAC down to a science. It begins with a facilitation meeting to assess training needs, followed by teaching sessions where communication partners join in-person or online courses focused on modeling through a unique training and coaching format. Finally, there are follow-up practice sessions and feedback to reinforce learning. When AAC training and coaching are effective, they impact not just one learner but every learner that provider or teacher will work with in the future. We offer many AAC courses at ABA Speech Connection, so don't forget to check them out and join us! #autism #speectherapyWhat's Inside:October is AAC Awareness Month. The history of AAC.A clear plan for professional development and training for AAC.Find more info through AAC course on ABA Speech Connection.Mentioned In This Episode:Join us in the ABA SPEECH Connection MembershipRose Griffin-Autism Speech Therapy Tips (@abaspeechbyrose) • Instagram

There have been numerous bullying incidents among students, both within and outside learning environments. More often than not, students receive little to no support in dealing with these cases, leading to unfortunate consequences such as students quitting school, particularly those in boarding schools in which many of them come from marginalised communities and challenging family backgrounds. The Ministry of Education has shown a commitment to addressing bullying in schools, but what is lacking? Are there gaps between the Ministry's commitment to addressing bullying and the actual implementation on the ground? In this episode of GOSSIP, we invited Adibah Khalil, a filmmaker from Kualitea Productions and a former boarding school student, along with Eeyeng Lim, a former Senior Programmes Associate from Architects of Diversity, to dig deeper into the questions surrounding safe and inclusive learning environments. Our main question is: what are we not doing enough, and most importantly, can there be safety without inclusivity? *NOTE: Views presented by the speakers are their own personal opinions and do not necessarily represent the views of KRYSS Network, or the organizations or institutions they are affiliated with.

How do we better include learners and learning profiles often left behind in traditional settings? What if we could custom-fit learning experiences around their unique strengths, gifts, capabilities and needs? What if understanding the brain's intracacies and high yield therapeutic approaches helped us support and empower them in the learning process? In this episode, Cheryl, Founder and Acting Head of Cajal Academy addresses these questions in context of a program tailor-made for what she calls 'exceptional learners.' All learners, year 1-12 have analytical/reasoning/creative thinking skills in the 'gifted' range, coupled with pronounced learning, social and emotional differences. Through our conversation, we learn how to: Create environments that invite, excite and stimulate these 'exceptional learners' Design scaffolds to support these learners through learning journeys and project-based experiences Use neuroscience to help amplify their special strengths, and overcome their challenges Include them in the process Unravel tips, strategies and insights that pave the way for classrooms where every project is an opportunity for diverse minds to shine! Taylor Wilmot, AMFT brings in to this dialog a lens developed as an active student in non-traditional learning environments cultivated since 2007. She offers a lens as emerging practice mental health counselor with an educational background that focused on developing skills to support multicultural approaches to counseling. It's normal to feel emotions like grief, anger, and confusion when our worldview is challenged by something new. In order to support ourselves and others through this process, we should allow space for feeling without judgment, try to recognize and validate our emotions, and seek towards expression and exploration.1. Josie and Taylor both went to an interdisciplinary college and are now working as therapists in different fields.2. They discuss the challenges and benefits of learning in an educational community that is intentionally non-hierarchical.3. They are exploring how different modes of learning can be used to benefit the inclusion, well-being, and empowerment of diverse humans.Josie and Taylor discuss the challenges of creating a safe space for emotional expression in an online learning environment. They note that it is important to be aware of the difference between emotions and information and that emotional reactions are not necessarily acts of violence. They also suggest that it is important to be prepared for the possibility that people may show up in a state of hyperarousal and that it is important to have grace for those who are in that state. The scapegoating dynamic can lead to a blind spot in terms of understanding the full problem and potential solutions. It can also create a sense of division within a group. It can be helpful to think about your own culture and how it might be different from the dominant culture when you are trying to learn about and be sensitive to other cultures. It is also important to be curious and humble when asking questions about other cultures. This conversation between Josie and Taylor is about the importance of approaching education with an openness to all different types of perspectives, and the role that educators can play in de-institutionalizing some of the harmful beliefs that are perpetuated in society. They discuss how everyone has a role to play in creating a more just and equitable world, and how we can all learn from each other by engaging in dialogue and critical inquiry.Supplementary Learning Referenced in Guest Interview (20EP)Supplementary Learning Referenced in Guest Interview (20EP)Information on Hyperarousal and Zone of Tolerance https://www.nicabm.com/trauma-how-to-help-your-clients-understand-their-window-of-tolerance/Information on Victim-Rescuer-Perpetrator Triangle https://www.heatherhayes.com/overcoming-the-drama-triangle/Information on Scapegoatinghttps://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2022/07/19/scapegoating-causes-reasons/Self-Reflection Excercise: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZIhR1t8qlkfEXn077fSJ8qSeeNGPgu3RxvfhSaqPIOo/copyEvolved Living Network Instragram @EvolvedLivingNetworkFree Occupational Science 101 Guidebookhttps://swiy.co/OS101GuidePodcastOS Empowered OT Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/1569824073462362/Link to Full Podcast Disclaimer https://docs.google.com/document/d/13DI0RVawzWrsY-Gmj7qOLk5A6tH-V9150xETzAdd6MQ/edit
