In Episode 167 of The Intentional Clinician podcast, Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews child psychiatrist Dr. Frank Putnam, MD about his groundbreaking assertion that prevention of child maltreatment is the single most powerful way to improve the mental and physical health of our nation. The conversation likely explores Dr. Putnam's decades of research through the Female Growth and Development Study (FGDS), which has followed sexual abuse survivors for over 35 years and revealed that childhood sexual abuse causes accelerated biological aging, increasing the risk for early onset of physical and mental conditions usually associated with late life. Drawing from his new book *Old Before Their Time*, Dr. Putnam discusses how childhood maltreatment is the largest preventable cause of certain major mental illnesses, interpersonal violence, and much hard drug abuse, while addressing the wide-ranging mental, physical, and social consequences that extend across generations.  Dr. Frank W. Putnam, MD, is a professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and an emeritus professor of pediatrics and child psychiatry at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He co-founded the pioneering Female Growth and Development Study (FGDS) in 1987 with the late Dr. Penelope K. Trickett, a longitudinal study that has followed female incest victims and comparison groups across three generations for over 35 years. I think that I knew how to do it, except that it was my body, and it's your body, when you're that you're dealing with. So nobody knows as much about you as you know about yourself.Lesley Logan 0:23  Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 1:05  Okay, Be It babe, we've talked we've we've had people talk about boundaries. We've had people talk about listening to your body. We've had people talk about getting to know yourself. And now I have your guest expert who is able to actually explain how to do all these things, explain how to actually listen to your body, explain how you can heal yourself. And really, we had a really great conversation about what it really looks like. And I mean, she was just describing being it till you see it in such a beautiful way, without saying it. And I just, I'm so excited that you're about to listen to this episode, because I just finished doing it, and I am pleased as punch. And I feel like I learned so much and or and even things that I think I knew were more solidified, and I have more confidence in that. And I just, I'm excited for you. So here's Inna Segal. Lesley Logan 1:52  All right, be it, babe, I'm ready to have this conversation. I got to talk with our guest today before the end of last year, and I was so excited about all the knowledge she has in the area that we're going to dive into. Also, she's a best selling author, and I think it's really important to bring that up. She is the author of The Secret Language of Your Body, and, you know, as a Pilates instructor and someone who's really big on mind-body connection, I couldn't agree more with someone having access and information on how we can get to know and talk with our bodies in such a better way, I think the world will be a better place if we all could do that. So Inna Segal, if you can tell everyone who you are and what you rock at.Inna Segal 2:28  Thank you, Lesley. So I teach people how to connect to their body and listen to their body, but I'm going to also add the soul and really work with it to transform their health, to transform their emotions, to essentially transform any area of their life which is stuck a block into something that is much more wise, flowing and deep. And so they get to know themselves in a deeper, more enriched kind of way. So it's not a surface-based experience, it's a deep dive experience.Lesley Logan 3:07  I know and that's the hard one. The surface is, I think, easy and necessary to, you know, wake up and go to bed and do some stuff in between, but getting to know ourselves on a soul level. I mean, that is, it feels like it shouldn't be tricky, but for whatever reason, it feels like it's the hardest thing for people to do.Inna Segal 3:29  I think it's the hardest thing just because we are not taught from an earlier age that we should listen to our inner self, and that's through our sensations, through our emotions, through what's really going on within ourselves, but we're actually taught to ignore everything and adjust ourselves to everybody else in the world, and so because of that, I feel that it became hard thing, instead of natural, and part of everybody's life is to go my body is essentially showing me if I'm in alignment with my life, with my purpose, with my relationships, with every part of my life, with my health, or it's not, you know, and if it's not, what is it that I need to change and adjust so that it can be?Lesley Logan 4:27  Yeah, yeah. I mean, oh my gosh, you said so much there that I couldn't agree more with. I think we're all taught from a very early age, you know, to not listen to our feelings even as babies, you know, babies are crying and people are like, it's okay, you're okay, and it's like, well, they're crying, you know? And I get, I get why. And by the way, we have a lot of moms listen, I get why. I probably too be like, you're fine, stop crying. But also like, you know, at what point are we teaching our, teaching them at such a young age to not listen to how they feel, or for us to not listen to how they feel, or how we feel so, so I find maybe our bodies are their own language, like we, we grow up learning English, but our bodies are speaking Spanish, and we were never taught to listen to that language. But maybe I'm simplifying a little bit. Inna, can you I would just want to know before we get too deep into this. Like, were you born knowing all this? Did your parents teach you this? Did you come from a mother who made sure you knew how to talk to your get to know your soul and your purpose or how did you get here?Inna Segal 5:28  Well, my mom was actually she's very open-minded as a person, but she was very much when I was growing up. She was very much into the medical world, and she thought the word of the doctor was kind of the Word of God, essentially. So I went to a lot of doctors when I was younger. I had digestive issues, I had psoriasis, I had really bad back pain, sciatica, inflammation in my back, a twisted back, and I had anxiety just from constantly being uncomfortable inside my body and being in pain. And essentially, I want to say my turning point came when I ended up seeing this chiropractor that I'd seen for a while, and he came out of his office looked at me and said, Your body's stuck. And I said, yeah, I know that part. What are you going to do to help me? And I've been seeing him for a while, so this was not my first session with him.Lesley Logan 6:28  That's good. He's not like, look like, you're stuck.Inna Segal 6:32  Yeah, you know, we'd known each other for some time, and he so he's basically, he basically said, you know, your your body wants to be stuck at this point go home, and I didn't take very well to that. On the way home, I was pretty angry, but because I actually come from a background of professional writing and journalism and editing, I was and I was studying that at the time, I was thinking exactly like you were saying before, from that linguistic perspective that I'm stuck my body's speaking to me. I don't know what it's saying, because it might as well be speaking. I felt like it was more Chinese or Japanese, because I literally I can't even recognize the letters, but what I was aware of is that I'd been going to see somebody for about it was two years solid, between three and five days a week, And I would have, you know, times, maybe a week to maximum month, where I felt better and I could forget about everything and just do whatever I needed to do in my life. But then I would have this crash, and all the pain would intensify and explode, and I would feel like it would get worse rather than better. And so what occurred to me on this drive home was that I'd always relied on somebody else to do all the healing work, and I never actually did any thing myself, because I didn't think I was qualified to do it. I think that I knew how to do it, except that it was my body, and it's your body to when you're that you're dealing with. So nobody knows as much about you as you know about yourself. And so when I went home, I made a decision, I'm going to heal myself. And I essentially just did the most basic things. I placed my hands on my back. I was breathing into my back because I realized that I was holding my breath. And you know, if you hold your breath, you are stuck. And I know you probably know about this more than most of us, Lesley, from teaching Pilates, and you know, and connecting to your body in that way. And so as I was doing that, and counting backwards from 30, it occurred to me to ask for something higher in terms of help. Because I thought, why not? Why? You know, at this point, I mean, there was conflict in me around, you know, whether I believed in it fully or not. And I say this because most people go, well, you have to believe. I didn't believe in anything. I'm one of the most skeptical people you're going to meet when it comes to things, you know, where I need proof for things.Lesley Logan 9:30  Right, right.Inna Segal 9:31  And so, you know, I have a very scientific, skeptical mind, and I ask, because I just essentially felt like, Why? Why wouldn't I? Why not ask for help? At this point, I had zero expectations, but this warmth just moved through my body, and as my eyes were closed, I saw this golden light, and then I said, for whatever reason, or I thought, I thought, I wonder what my back would look like if I could see it, and without any expectation, within a few moments, I felt like somebody switched the light on and I could see my back. And although I was a bit shocked, I thought to myself, okay, this is kind of my (inaudible) to Japanese. Show me. Show me why I have this. What is the real reason that I have this? And the best way to describe this is as in having a memory meets a vision meets wisdom, right? So it was kind of like there were several, I am very visual. I didn't know that I was until that moment, but I am and visually, I could connect back to memories of things that happened. But not everything was a memory. Some of it was more of an insight, vision, understanding, kind of wisdom, what happened. And so I saw I was born in Eastern Europe, I saw myself coming to Australia and going to school and being bullied, and from there, developing psoriasis all over my skin. I saw the conflicts that my parents had in terms of trying to adjust to a new culture going to high school and not necessarily being bullied for not being able to speak the language, but being bullied for not being one of us, so to say, not being because it was a private school, not being someone who came from a super wealthy family, not belonging to the same club, and all of that affecting me from the perspective of, I don't feel myself, I don't feel supported, I don't feel comfortable in my own skin. I don't want to be here and.Lesley Logan 11:57  I get all of that. I get all of that all and I think so many people are probably nodding along, we don't realize how it doesn't have to be so bad that we would be on news show or be a documentary about you, but those little things that make you feel unsafe and or you don't belong, it means that your body becomes this foreign thing you you no one know. Not only do you not know how to read Japanese to talk to your body, but it just you know, if you can't belong in your own body, it's really hard to feel like you belong anywhere. And if you don't feel like you belong anywhere, it's hard to know what belonging in your body is. You don't know what what that feels like.Inna Segal 12:41  Well, exactly, and the last part of this was an understanding of ancestry meets my own, I guess, challenge everything interestingly was coming up around this communication challenge, right? So not being able to speak and be myself, not being able to speak English, not being able to speak the language, and I don't mean, you know, when I, when I got older, the language that people are speaking about. Oh look, this is my label. This is what I bought here, and so on. Lesley Logan 13:18  Oh, yeah. Inna Segal 13:18  So there was an interesting aspect of that. And then there was this ancestral trauma that was connected to my digestive system that took a long, long time to work on. And it was to do with my grandmother losing a lot of people in her family. And then when I was 19, I got pregnant. It was very hard for me to adjust to that idea that I was going to become a mother at that age. Out of all my friends, I would have been, you know, the one they thought would either have kids the latest, or maybe not even have them. So the fact that I was the first, and everyone went, oh my god, wow, okay, was pretty intense. And then, when, then I just had this sense that something was off, probably about a month or three weeks before the baby was born and when, but I was told by the midwives that I was crazy, that nothing was happening. And this is, again, how medical professionals often kind of push aside anything intuitive that shows up, and essentially, the baby died pretty much 38 weeks.Lesley Logan 14:31  Oh, I'm so sorry.Inna Segal 14:34  Yeah. So it was so I was in trauma. I didn't want to leave. I was, you know, I just want people to understand I was at rock bottom, even wanting to be here, and I was 20. In my mind, whilst I don't, I can't say 100% I was told that the baby would have died two or three days before, which was actually my birthday, where I turned 20. So it was, you know, so I kind of connected it to my. Birthday and all of this stuff and that I didn't want to be here, and what's the point of everything in life, and this, this whole experience of connecting to my body, was pretty profound. So I really saw how my grandmother and her loss, she lost her mother, and she she was part of a family of eight, and everybody died, except her and her father, who survived for a few years after the war, and she never really grieved it or worked through it in any way or form, because people didn't at that time, and everybody had digestive issues in my family, and so I could see how the explosion occurred. Especially, I had issues before, but after I had the baby, it was just, you know, I, my digestive system just wasn't working well, and during that experience, I cried a lot. I understood a lot of things. I also realized that I was a sponger. I was one of those people that just took on everybody's pain in general, as well as it all. And after all of these insights, I fell asleep, and then the next day, when I wake up, about 70% of the pain was gone from my back, and I felt different. There was something different inside of me where I went, oh my god, my body's working with me. I can help I can work with it. It's because I made this step towards it that it's coming towards me, even though I'm still super skeptical that, you know, this is not just something that's not going to return. And so, you know, over the next few weeks, I just journaled a lot, I asked a lot of questions, I connected, and by the end of it, all the psoriasis was gone. So that was the first thing that went that was and again, lots of people, my family, have it and have had it their whole lives. So it wasn't, and I'd had it for by that stage, for 10 years. So it wasn't like, oh, you know, I had this.Lesley Logan 17:10  Mis-diagnosis of some kind. Inna Segal 17:11  Yeah, yeah, exactly. And then, you know, I noticed, yeah, my back pain disappeared. My anxiety went down. Digestive Issues took years and years to work on. Lesley Logan 17:26  They do. But also with that generational and ancestral trauma, it just takes a while, because the gut just takes a while to, like, rebuild and do all that stuff and figure out what you need. Sorry, I cut you off. But yes, I actually it feels better that it didn't happen overnight, because that would feel weird.Inna Segal 17:47  Well, yeah, exactly. And that's what people need to understand, is that, especially when it comes connects, like, well, what's the gut about? It's about digesting life as well as food, right? It's assimilating, every day we have experiences, this is our emotional center, one of them, and we always talk about our what's your gut saying? Right? So we already know we have it in our language. So we have our intuition, we have our emotions here. We have knowingness here. But it's also all about how we, our relationships. It's an area that processes what happened during the day, your relationships, your experiences how something happened in your life, and what you believe you're capable of doing. It's kind of where your sense of self lives, and many of us need to clarify what that even means and rebuild it, because a sense of self has been beaten down over the years through all sorts of things in our you know, family and even at work, relationships for sure, and so this is something that is daily, right? It's a daily experience where you go, you know, how did I, how did I go today? Did I push down and push away and just keep going, or did I face things?Lesley Logan 19:20  Yeah, I think that's a great, first of all, I love that you ask yourself questions. And I think that that's where a lot of people, well, I think a lot of people get stuck on what am I asking? But also do I ask myself how am I doing? Yes, that's a great place to start. But I do think a lot of people, you know, it's, it's okay if you're one day, like, I can't do it today. I just have to go through. Okay, one day. But where I think happens is that people keep going the next day into the next day. We procrat, we keep putting off the prioritization of ourself. And that's where it builds up on top of the ancestral stuff. So it's we have our own stuff, and then there's the stuff. So I guess I have, I don't want to forget to talk about boundaries, because I know you've clearly had to figure out how to do that since you are so, since you were a sponge before, and obviously we're probably not now, since you figured this out. But for the people who I've heard of, ancestral stuff, like it comes through, how do people know what's theirs and what's ancestral, and then how do you cut the ties of that? Because is it visually cutting the ties? Is it telling your family that's your stuff? How do you do that?Inna Segal 20:31  Well, it's, I don't know about visually cutting it. I'm not gonna be a fan of cutting things in general. I think I'm more into clearing or being very clear in things that I feel in terms of, again, boundaries, it often takes a long time for you to gain your confidence first, to become aware of what is a healthy boundary, right? So you have to even come to that place of, what does it mean and who with, right? Because it's completely different with different people. So I can be incredibly good with having healthy boundaries, let's say with my students or with my clients, but not necessarily with family. And I'm saying it as an example, right? It's easier with people who are not close with you. The hardest thing is with those who are because you don't want to hurt them and you don't want to be harsh. And so from my perspective, I've done all sorts of things with boundaries. I've spent, you know, countless hours at different times in my life writing them down again. I write to get clarity, and I actually encourage everyone to do that in terms of boundaries, because what does it mean to you? You know, is it self respect? Is it self love? Is it space that you need? What boundary are you actually looking at? Is it actually you know, I know so many people that are single and don't have healthy boundaries with people that they have dated or been in relationships before with, or they keep going and then they wonder why they can't find the part, you know, the partner that they want, and all sorts of things. So there's many, many different boundaries that you need to look at. I think the hardest are definitely when it comes to your parents, children and partner. You know, I really think it's also how you present it and then sticking to it. So for instance, with my children, it's also changed over time. So there were times when they were younger, where it was like, well, you have to knock on the door. That's my boundary. Can't just barge in. So if you barge in, you go back, you know, and you knock on the door, that's a boundary, right? And they had to write down their boundaries as well when they were younger, when they were kind of teenagers, and so on. And then it became, well, you know, with my son, for instance, he would go into this place of overwhelm, and then he would bombard me with negative messages in the middle of the night. And so even if I turned my phone off, which was part of my you know.Lesley Logan 23:15  Yeah, you wake up to a crappy day.Inna Segal 23:19  Exactly. And so I said I had to clarify this to him over and over and over again. You can't do this. If you do this, I'm going to, I'm actually not going to speak to you for a while. I mean, unless you're asking me for help, don't, don't send me this, unless you're willing to do what I'm what I'm going to say, so we had a lot of kind of like, here's a boundary. Here's a boundary. Here's a boundary. With my mom, she used to call me, and the first thing that she would say would be some kind of complaint, and I'd be like, as she called, I wouldn't pick up the phone half the time. And she would go, you know, you don't pick up the phone. And I was like, well, let's think about why I don't pick up the phone. You know, what do you usually say when you call me? You know, do you say something positive? Is it something encouraging, or do you kind of attack and say all these things to me? And so again, we had to have a break for several months from talking to each other, because I was like, you can't do that. And then we had a break another time, because she learned her lesson where, you know, and I would say, I will hang up if you start being negative and telling me all this stuff, I'm not your therapist. I'm your daughter. So, you know, we need to change our game and the roles that we're playing, because this, I cannot grow the way that you're you're doing this. And also, I don't want to be in, you know, like you are with my children. So I need a completely different overhaul of mothering, you know, so that I can be the mother that I think they need. There's so many different ways, and I think luckily for me, everybody in the family eventually, because they kind of got the message in terms of what the boundaries are. But it takes time, and it takes a lot of effort.Lesley Logan 25:24  Well, I appreciate you, one, giving all those examples, because I have asked other people this question, and I don't get nearly the detail. I get be patient, but also be clear. And it's right? I thank you for the you know, the same thing I could read on a blog. What I appreciate is like, you explain how your how the boundaries, healthy boundaries evolve over time, based on the person and based on your needs. And also that it is, it is hard. You have to keep enforcing that boundary until you know it's an actual boundary that they see and you can and it can be appreciated. And also that means that they could have boundaries too. And I think that's where a lot of people who struggle when people put boundaries up, is that they don't realize that they too can also have a boundary they too can go reflect on. So I think what a great example you are. So thank you for diving into that. So I do, I do want, before I forget. I do want to go into that ancestral stuff. Because, first of all, I can only imagine what your grandmother went through. But I do, I do know that, most of us, no matter where you live in the world, if you're over 40, you have grandparents or great grandparents who were in these were World Wars. So there was, there was a lot of loss. And you know, I know my father was in a war that was not appreciated and liked, and in hindsight, was a terrible thing, and so not treated the same as people who were in one of the world wars when they came back home. And so I think all these things depend. So how do you how did you discover what was ancestral with your grandmother versus, oh, this stuff, this over here is my stuff. How did you kind of figure that out?Inna Segal 27:04  Well, I started looking at everybody in the family, actually, and I started asking questions, which were, was I born with this? I mean, in other words, did I bring this with me into this life? Is it does it feel like completely mine, or does it feel like I've brought it? I'm picking it up, I'm carrying this, and if I am, then am I doing it unconsciously in the same exact way that my grandmother, or great grandmother, whoever else did, or my mom? Or am I doing this differently? So I was closely looking at it, and one of the biggest things that we do take on, and that I was watching myself, you know, absorb, let's just say, was constant worry, right? Constant worry, because that was something my grandmother did. My grandfather did it. They had digestive issues, they had surgeries, they had cancers. My mom had it, and I was like, what are they doing that I don't want to get the same health issue? Let's break that down. So to actually, because the biggest thing in my family is intestinal cancers, I was like, okay, let's look that up. Well, in my book that I write, let's look at that right, and let's go, what causes this? And if I don't want to get this, I need to act in a very, very different way, meaning internally, not just on the external which means I need to go rather than just sitting in that state of tension and worry, it's like, what can I do to transform that worry? You know, what can I what do I need to work on in terms of that? So, how do I change that when this shows up? What am I worrying about? And actually, my daughter asked me the other day. She goes, Mom, what do you do when, you know, when things happen to her, mainly to my son. And you know that's different, because she was asking me about this ancestral stuff, and I said to her, well, actually, I start to think I know so many processes, right? I teach them, I write about them. So I immediately get my journal out. I write down what's going on for me, and then I look at what are the processes that are available to me that can help me and him? And it could be as simple as I am focused on buying into whatever he's telling me, which is negative and he obviously wants me to feel as bad as I possibly can feel because that's his pattern that he's learned from, you know, his dad and other people in the family. So what if I don't buy that, and I actually keep seeing him being healthier and being stronger and being, you know, different and so at different times. I mean, not different who he is, but being aware of where he's at. And you know what I found is that it's not immediately that the change happens when you hold something different for, let's say, your your child, but eventually they have. It's like they have something different to adjust to than that ancestral line that you've worked on yourself, and that's how you change things for your family.Lesley Logan 30:50  Inna, that is freaking amazing. It's like, I'm obsessed with this, because it's instead of me turning on the emotion that they're trying to get me to have, I'm visualizing the person that I wish they could be in that moment. I can stay good, and their stuff stays their stuff, and it's not going to solve it in today's conversation or tomorrow's conversation or whatever. But I'm not taking it on either, because it's not mine. I love this so much. Oh my god. I mean, I could keep talking about this with you, but I do want to pick your brain about something that we talked about that made me so excited. You have a whole thing you talk about archetypes and with masculine and feminine. I just kind of wanted to get into that, because I think it's really easy for, you know, with Instagram, to say, like, oh, you got to be in your feminine. And it's like, well, yeah, and I run my own business, so, you know, sometimes I have to talk about taxes, sometimes just got to do it. So I kind of wanted to hear your take, because I'm I also am someone who's, like had gut issues, and I've had a lot of people who listen, who have that, and I'm like, how do I stay not taking it all in, but also, being in this world, this world is a lot going on.Inna Segal 32:02  Yeah, absolutely, when we're looking at archetypes, essentially, what we're looking at is emotion meets your belief systems and a perspective, a particular way of seeing life, meets your life story. So what's actually occurred to you specifically, and also it connects to your ancestry, what you've picked up and you're playing out that you're not necessarily aware of. So let's say we are looking at feminine and masculine as archetypes. So if I'm looking in the feminine archetype, and I feel hardly anyone talks about this, I need to, actually, to understand my own feminine I need to understand my feminine line. I need to understand, well, what was the feminine in terms of my grandmother, let's say, how did she express that? And is that in alignment with what I feel feminine is at this point, so was she warm, kind, loving, expressive, or was she cold, disconnected in herself? What was the example of feminine from, let's say, my grandmother or my auntie or my mom, ideally, all of these people, because that became my idea of what feminine is. Now around the age of 14 to let's say 16, we are as we're growing in that teenage age, which is also an archetype where we're looking at our family, female and females and males, and we're going, who would I like to be like? Who is showing me something that is more appealing to me than the other person? So for a lot of us, especially of my generation, like you said, people in their 40s. You, you, you kind of had that more of a choice than the generations before that, where you looked at your mom and you looked at your dad and you went, I think I want to be more masculine because it looks more fun and I can and I want to, you know, for me, it was like, I want to be like, Madonna, look, if she can do it, I can do it. Lesley Logan 34:32  I wasn't allowed to have her on my wall, but I am so I feel like I missed out on an amazing chapter of life, if I could have had her as my mentor.Inna Segal 34:41  So, you know, and she was quite masculine, and since she went, I'm going to do whatever men do. I'm going to conquer the world, blah, blah, blah. So to me, it was that, and subconsciously, again, no one does this consciously. Subconsciously, I went, well, my mom, so. what feminine means for her. in terms of what I've seen, is cooking, cleaning, doing what you don't want to do, being subordinate to your partner. I'm not doing that. So I was like, I'd rather be masculine than feminine in that sense, again, not consciously, because my dad has freedom. He does whatever he wants to do. My mom does whatever my dad wants her to do, whatever she feels, she's constantly adjusting herself. And so I kind of went like this, you know, bull into the real, into my earlier relationships, going, oh no, it's my way, like I because I cannot be like what I've seen my mom be, which obviously then create a lot of conflict, and made me go, okay, so when I'm looking when somebody says, be feminine, and I'm looking at this, and it's still work, a work in progress, right? And I'm going, so what does it look like today to show up being feminine in terms of this person and that and I thought about it in so many different ways, and one of the easiest ways I've thought about it is through color. So it was like, okay, let's say I'm wearing pink today, so I'm going, pink is a soft color, quite feminine in that sense of expansion. It's it's a love color, but it's gentle. It's not that red passion, you know, and intensity. It's softer than green. Even the green is connected to the heart and healing the heart. So, I, you know, I might go, okay, so what does it look like to be pink and connect to my son, for instance, through that, you know, more of the gentleness let me, let me get to know myself in that feminine through that color. How do I breathe? How do I feel? How do I walk? How does my voice sound? Can I adjust my voice based on this color? Right? Because people get affected. And so it started to look at that. And I also think that when you're looking at again feminine or masculine, it's about role models. It was like, what what do I already have, and what am I missing? And so one of the things, because I grew up in, you know, both when I was very young, in Eastern Europe and then in Australia, most of the time now, in both of these places, gracefulness is not one of the things that you see in terms of women. But in France, you see that all the time. And so at one point, I was like, what am I missing? Oh, I'm missing this sense of grace that I find really attractive in terms of seeing in other women. And so where do I find this? And I was like, I need to, I need to look at old movies. I need to look at French women, not all of them, but. Lesley Logan 38:06  Yeah, no, Inna, this is so be it till you see it. This is the blueprint for how to be it till you see it. And I agree, oh my god, the French women, they know how to just like they exude luxury and grace.Inna Segal 38:20  Exactly. And just watching it and going, oh, okay, let me, let me embrace this. Let me practice this. Right? Because people think, oh, I am who I am, and I'm, I don't agree with that. It's like, you are a refinement, you know? And this is why I don't agree with this whole idea in the New Age movement of I'm already perfect. It's like, what? Why? What are you doing here? If you're already perfect, what's the point of this? Perfection, as my partner says this (inaudible) perfection is the enemy of creation. It's like, you're not perfect. You would not be here. This is not a holiday. You're here to evolve and grow. And, refine. You know, let's not even use the word perfect. Let's use the word refine. And, you know, grow in that sense. And it's the same with the masculine. What I find, for instance, is that people who find it very hard to be successful in the outside world have a very weakened masculine without any doubt, it's almost like that spine of the masculine is weakened inside of them, usually from childhood, usually from, you know, all sorts of belief systems and early failures and lack of direction and lack of support often from their family in terms of, rather than pushing somebody into direction, actually discovering the direction that and supporting them in the direction that is right for them. And so what ends up happening is that these people start having these very, very strong belief systems. But it shows up in their spine like literally shows up energetically in their spine, because lower back, for instance, is all about finances. And you know, how good are you at looking after and supporting your family? And I grew up with people who constantly thought about finances, so it was not a surprise when I figured it out I had back pain, and love back pain. So it's almost like, as you become aware of it, you actually have choice to do something about it. So with the masculine you can, you know, you can go, oh, I need to work on strengthening that archetype, that part of myself, but also my spine, and my ability to handle rejection, my ability to handle objections, my ability to to guide if it is my own business, let's just say my ability to make decisions, concentration, logic, so all of those are beautiful masculine qualities. But I need to, let's say, whether you're in a masculine or feminine body, feminine is creative. It's light, it's a bit chaotic, but it's, you know, it's flowing at the same time, it's colorful, it, you know that there is that divinity and spirituality magic that it has there, whereas the masculine is more about making it happen, taking something that's creative and amazing and putting it into practice.Lesley Logan 41:35  Well, and you can, I would love to hear, I want to make your own opinion for you, but it just sounds like we need both. We have to we all need both. And it sounds like understanding where we got our our vision of what those two things are and how we are using them in our body is going to either help us or it's or it might be what's harming us. And so the more we can take our time to discover who is. Where did I discover my feminine and where am I, where would I like it to be? And where did the masculine happen? And where would, where would I prefer it to be? And then working towards that. And I love that we are not perfect. There's no perfect. Just keep on evolving and refining and getting better and so but the Instagram world is like, oh, I have three friends who are like, I'm just gonna, live in my divine feminine I'm like, oh, okay. I mean, I think that's gonna be hard.Inna Segal 42:32  Well, actually, interestingly, quite a few years ago, when I was separating from my ex husband, I ended up meeting this friend of mine, and she was doing this whole divine feminine thing at the time. And I remember I would call her and I would say, we caught up three times a week at the time, which was amazing. And I'd call her and I'd go, oh, what have you been doing, you know, this week, besides the times we've, you know, caught up, and she'd go, I'm connecting to my feminine I'm just literally lying next to the pool, journaling, you know, getting the sun, having a swim, and that's all I'm doing, because I'm slowing down internally and and she would speak in this beautiful, kind of very slow way. And I remember thinking, it's like she's the complete opposite to me. I don't even know what that looks like, or what that means to just, you know, go, and this was happening over many months, where she just, you know, it was covered. She wasn't working, and she was, you know, she'd pick up her son and do some things in the evening from school, but most of the day was about this and and really embodying it. And I was well, firstly, I think it's amazing that she's doing it, but most of us do not have that luxury of just or a (inaudible). Lesley Logan 43:53  Right, we do have to kind of go do something today.Inna Segal 44:01  Exactly. And, you know, in the same way that it was beautiful, it was also really challenging for her, because then she was kind of like, well, I want to start a business, but there was all sorts of blocks that were coming up for her to start a n business, because she really got into that state of, well, feminine means there's no time limit. You just do what you want. You just kind of, right? And eventually it's she had to step into her masculine and start to balance it out, because you cannot just be in one, you know, constantly.Lesley Logan 44:41  Yeah, one or the other. Yeah, it goes the same with like, oh my gosh, I we don't have time to get into it. But on the ground, these people are, these dudes, this is what it means to be masculine. I'm like, is it though? Maybe you should find your feminine. Maybe you should. But I appreciate that you sharing that story and also, yeah, we it's kind of taking the time to understand both archetypes for ourselves and what that refinement looks like, and then working on what the transition is between the two and when, when you're applying both. You know, I feel like I could talk to you forever, because, it's so beautiful what you do, and you're so knowledgeable, and there's a lot of kindness and how you approach these things, it's also so patient. So, you know, I appreciate that, because, you know, our listeners are like, okay, but tell me. And I think they need to hear it does take time, so we are going to take a brief break and find out where people can find you, follow you, work with you, and your Be It Action Items. Lesley Logan 45:31  All right, Inna, where do you hang out? Where can they buy your book? Where they take courses? Where should they go to learn more about you?Inna Segal 45:39  So the best place to go to is my website, which is innasegal.com I-N-N-A-S-E-G-A-L dot com, and what I really invite people to do is to take a step forward. And in the last few years, what I wanted to do is to take away people's excuses. So I used to do these master classes, slash mini workshops. I used to charge quite a bit of money for it. And then I said to my partner, you know what? I just feel like I want to spread the seeds, so to speak, and I want to give people an opportunity for, you know, some time. And this can change at any point that we've decided to change it, but for some time, an opportunity to access these, you know, mini workshops for free, because I want to take away excuses, because most people have excuses, non stop excuses, of why they don't do something. And the only excuse I cannot take away is you actually making a time for yourself and going and doing it, right? Actually doing the course, the mini workshop, the masterclass, and giving yourself the opportunity to tune in and there's, there's several master classes, so there's option. It's not, I never believe in one fits all kind of mentality. Some, some people very new to my work, my book, The Secret Language of Your Body, and they just want to go, how do I work with the book in the best way possible, right? How do I work with my body in the best way possible? So we have options for that, where people can, you know, can can do a course based on my book, The Secret Language of Your Body, or they might, you know, we also did something called the eight-week challenge where, you know, connecting to your intuitive body, where I go through all the systems of the body through the eight weeks, as well as archetypes and tuning into your body. And this is a way for people to really get to know and understand all the different aspects of their body that shows up and really befriend it. But then I teach, I teach my kind of 10-day workshop of Awake the Healer Within which is what I'm most excited about, because it's what you know, what is the foundation of healing? What does it actually mean to heal on the deepest level? And we talk about and work with a lot of archetypes, from feminine and masculine to the victim to the, you know, inner child, to really understanding your saboteur and how you sabotage your life, how you procrastinate and so, as well as the archetypes connected to your intuition and your capacity to move forward. So, and there's a lot of kind of tools around working with the body and healing and different conditions and energy and so on in that particular offering, which is a master class as well, but it goes for four hours. You need more time, and we go into all sorts of processes. I always, I don't just talk in these master classes. I actually give people a lot of wisdom and processes. And then I have one on your purpose and the sole purpose, and what it even means and looks like, and one on understanding ancestry and understanding your kind of your stages of development. So there's a lot.Lesley Logan 49:17  Inna, oh my gosh, if you try it right now you can, you can access it for free. So you should go do that. Why would you wait? And if you have to pay, I think it's probably worth it. So, I mean, I learned so much already. You have given us so much, and I agree with that. Like, take a step forward so that could be your Be It Action Item. But if you have any other bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted steps people can take to be it till they see it, we'd love to hear them.Inna Segal 49:43  I feel like step one is making a decision that you're you're somehow responsible for your own healing, not for what happened to you, not for all the trauma that occurred to you and other people's involvement. But what can you do about it and without it, nobody actually really heals in a real way. Other people can do all sorts of things for you, but it won't fully hold, because unless you take that step forward, you're not, you know, you're not really understanding what it's about. And so step one is being interested, being willing to understand, taking that responsibility and then searching for it, taking step a step forward, and then I'm going to say is helping yourself from the perspective of, how does this become part of my life? Right? So, how do I make it part of my life? In other words, what do I do when I wake up in the morning most of the time, right? Because we can't do something all the time. Things change. But most of the time, what is your first thought when you wake up in the morning? Are you focused on meditation, divine connection? Are you focused on what you could do during the day? Are you focused on the positive? Are you focused on stress and worry. You know, what, what happens to you? Then you know what happens to you when you're eating, for instance, are you conscious? And I think that's a huge one for most people, including myself, because we're just running and doing this and this and that in the you know, can you start to create time? And I had this conversation yesterday, actually, with my partner. I went to meet his family. He's from the UK, so we went to England last year, and I was watching his family, and I was like, oh my god, I can't breathe because they just ran. There was no stopping, there was no kind of breathing, there was no self-reflection. There was just doing, doing next thing, next, next, next. And he said to me yesterday, he said, I've just realized that, you know, I do my work. We work together. I think like you do with your husband. And he's like, I finished something, and I go, what's next, what's next, what's what's next. And I never give myself time to really connect and tune in. And he and I said to him, yeah, because this is that's all you've seen when you were growing up, I was exhausted watching your family, and I remember at one point I did a process, and I did in the wrong place, in the wrong room, where everybody could see me, where they started coming into the house. I didn't realize how long it would take. And they were like, what are you doing, wasting your time, as opposed to, actually, I'm doing something really important. Why are you not helping us? I was like, oh, because I'm being I need to, you know, I'm doing something for myself because it was, it's non-existent, and he went, it's almost like I feel guilty, or I feel, you know, that I'm wasting my time. That's why, when you keep saying, do processes, but I have so much more to do, but it's practical. And what you're saying to do is impractical. It's you know, internal stuff, but not, I don't see the practical application of it. And, you know, he's like, can I feel guilty, and he's like, I need to change this, right?Lesley Logan 53:18  Yeah.Inna Segal 53:20  And this is many, many people, especially men, where they kind of go up, I just need to fix stuff, I just need to do stuff, as opposed to, unless you're good inside, and you even give yourself an opportunity, like you said, Lesley, to ask questions, to go within, to discover who are you? What do you stand for? What do you do? What are you about? You know, all of this takes time to self-reflect and self-connect. How can you have boundaries? How can you have good relationships with someone if you never think about it right, because that shows up in your body. So how do you allow yourself to access feelings if you're being taught to push them down? Well, it takes time. It takes time for you to explore, but you have to make that choice to explore.Lesley Logan 54:18  I love this so much, and also, isn't it so funny when we see our partner or our friends, where they come from, and then you're like, oh, that's why you don't sit still. No one is sitting still. And my husband will listen to this when we'll do a recap, but like, hey, babe, do you did you see yourself in that description of her partner? Because, we're going on vacation. And he put he brought the computer to the pool. We brought the computer to the pool. And I was like, I'm gonna shame you. I'm gonna put you on the internet. My husband brought his computer to the pool, everyone. You know, but also, you know it's we're all on this journey. We're all learning the more we can actually take it, take your Be It Action Items, and embody them and use them. I think we can. We all get to grow together, and we can affect so many people's lives. Our bubble of influence will be affected in a positive way. So thank you, Inna for being you and for all that you brought to us and all that you educated us on. It truly is knowing who you want to be and loving yourself enough to do the things that get you there. Lesley Logan 0:13  Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:55  All right. Welcome back Be It babe. How are you? Okay. So we are finishing our self love series for now. I mean, maybe we'll add on to it. And also, it's really crazy. Is in between recording one and two, I interviewed two amazing women who will come out at different times, but they were, they were validating how important the series is and just the words that they were giving. And so I know that the Be It pod is always giving tips on loving yourself and and, you know, getting to know yourself. But I'm hoping that this episode gives you some tools, some simple ones. I have some that you guys sent in. So thank you so much. And then just some things that to think about, right? And then we'll also do a burnout series. And they, they, they go hand in hand, and they go hand in hand with the habits series, right? So all this to say that being it till you see it is not about faking it, and it's also not about overdoing it. It truly is knowing who you want to be and loving yourself enough to do the things that get you there. And you're not going to like everything, right? It's going to it's not going to be easy if it's easy you'd already be there and then you have something else to want. So this is the tools episode. So if you didn't listen to the first one, please go back to the first one, because I think what the first one, what we talked about, was, what is self-love like? Why do we struggle with it? Why do we need it? And then what does that look like, right? So now we're in the tools, tools for loving yourself. So in preparation for this series, one of the one of the things that I actually read that I thought the whole series would be about, and it's just part of it. There's actually a book. It's called Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends On It.Lesley Logan 2:30  And the first half is a bunch of tools, and the second half is a journey of him falling back in love with himself. And that part is actually a really quick read, and it's beautiful, and it's like short snippets, and the vulnerability is really amazing, and the tools are really cool. So one of the tools in the book that I particularly liked and have used, are you ready? You will play a song that you like that makes you feel good. Okay? If you don't know that, here's a simple one. Go into whatever music app you use, hit instrumental music so that it has no words, okay? And then just hit play on one. Then you're gonna close your eyes and listen and for the length of the song, every time you inhale, you say, I love myself. And every time you exhale, you let something go. Inhale, I love myself. Exhale, let something go, right? Just let enough. You just let the air go inside, If your mind wanders, you just go, am I inhaling or exhaling? I'm inhaling. I love myself. I love me. I love what I do for me. I love who I am, right? That I really like because there's a lot of tools out there, and I might even say some that I'm like, okay, I think this could work for somebody, but it might not work for me, and that's fine, right? That's there's gonna be tools that don't work for me. Maybe that doesn't, but I actually really love that. Really love that one. Here's a couple others that I think are fabulous and might work for you, don't work for my ADHD frame, but I that one I love, that one is easy to do. I can do it while I'm driving, you know. So, all right, some other tools, so tools to foster self-love include mindfulness and meditation and journaling to process thoughts and practicing self-compassion by training yourself with kindness and other helpful practices or setting boundaries and practicing gratitude and celebrating accomplishments. We already talked about what self-love looks like, and self love looked like, having self-compassion and kindness and having boundaries. And so, of course, the tools include doing those things. But if they're hard for you, how do you do them? And also, like, I'm a big fan of, like, what am I supposed to journal? What am I doing anyways? And so, of course, you're you know, journals are there to help process your thoughts and emotions and protect your experiences and gain a better understanding of yourself. But like, what do you journal? So some of the past be a guest have mentioned a few different things of journaling. And so one guest, David Corbin, he said, just grab a piece of paper. Write a question at the top of it, close your eyes and meditate on that question. And with your eyes closed, write down stuff. Because there's also like, something about like, your brain will remember what you wrote down and what's important will be there. But sometimes just getting off the page, we've also had people who talk about, like, the morning pages, just like getting up and writing things down on a page. And not even worrying what it is. In our Tarot episode, we talked about, you know, like, you can draw a card and then have reflections questions for that card that day. So there are a million different ways, if you also just are, like, I need something better. Look just literally Google journal prompts for self-love. Okay, you'll get something. And then you can journal that you can't do it wrong. Now, I don't particularly like journaling on a computer, so I will say that might be something you might want to do in an actual journal. And I know you might have a reader handwriting I can't read mine, but I do think it's really helpful. I notice when I journal regularly, I get to the bottom of like, Oh, I'm in fear right now, you know, it's sometimes hard to self-reflect without being able to write down the things that are on there. Lesley Logan 5:45  Mindfulness and meditation. So I actually this, UCLA has a Mindfulness Institute, and they actually have classes on mindfulness and like, you can mindfully suck on a frozen grape, right? Like, mindfulness is that you can mindfully walk like you can go outside and just like I'm gonna take one step in front of the other. So mindfulness is really about being present. Meditation is like sitting down and like clearing your head as best you can and focus on your breath. And something I love about meditation experts is that you can, if you if your mind wanders, just go, okay, and now I'm back right? So there's a ton of different meditation practices out there. If you've read the book Breathe, there's some really great breath work meditations in there. And so I highly recommend, if you don't have a meditation or mindfulness practice, what I would suggest you do is, like, actually, kind of go on a journey of trying out ones that you would like. This is part of the self-compassion. This is part of the boundaries. This is part of the self-care. The self-love is like, love yourself enough to go, Okay, do I like sitting still for five minutes? Oh, do I prefer walking around the block without my phone, right? Do I prefer walking with one footstep in front of the other? Do I like a guided meditation? Do I need to hear someone's voice? Do I like a breathwork meditation? What kind of breath work meditation? Do I like box breathing? Or do I like, you know, Wim, Hof style, things like that. But if that is like, Oh, that'd be a great tool for me to practice my self-love. Then use the habits series to help you figure out a time to do that, and then try out different types of meditation till you find one that works for you. And then I love that self-compassion is going to come next, because you can't have the compassion for yourself if you don't find that meditation practice on day one, right? So it's all self-compassion is basically just like treating yourself the way you treat others. And you know, here's the thing, if we are having people who are like you're you're treating wonderfully, and they're treating like crap, it's because you're treating you like crap and you're like you're getting friendships that are like that, because that feels comfortable to you. So really have some self-compassion talk to have the same kindness and love for yourself as you do with other people. And the same thing when someone else has a mistake or makes it struggling with something like with something like notice how you treat them, and how do you treat yourself, and and you can't do all these things at once, my love, so pick one of these to work on at a time. Lesley Logan 7:50  Positive affirmations. So some people like this, we had Nikole Mitchell, she had a lot of affirmations on Post-Its around her house, and she would take them down when people came over because she didn't want people to know what was going on. But I love having, like, have positive affirmation. There's apps out there that throughout the day will, like, even send you a positive affirmation. Like, have that if that's what you need, especially if you're not so good at noticing the things you are doing wonderfully in this you know, I noticed a lot of people have a hard time sending me wins, right? Lesley Logan 8:18  A gratitude practice. So this one is interesting. Some people in the coaching world love a gratitude practice. Some people hate it. There's like, The Five Minute Journal that's really good about this. The tulip book I was listening to, like,Buy Yourself the Fucking Tulips. Talks about writing about 10 things she likes every day. Some people think that, like, this is stupid. Your gratitude practice doesn't work. Eventually you, like, just keep repeating things. I would say at that point, then you'd move on to a new practice. But if you don't have a gratitude practice, here's a thing about gratitude. My therapist told me, your gratitude and judgment can't live in the same space, right? So if you are struggling to have self-compassion, then I think a gratitude practice is a great way to get that as a tool under your tool belt of self-love. If you're judging yourself, I want you to write down three things. Say three things, I'm grateful for this I'm grateful, like, I'm grateful that I washed my hair today. Like, I think it could be really good. This one's gonna be harder, but I do think it's important. Forgiveness, giving yourself permission to forgive you of past mistakes. So that might include, like, having a moment of grief, or some time you might come up with this in journaling, but like a lot of times, people keep things in their life, or do things in their life that they know are harmful to them longer than they want, and it's hard to let those things go. So sometimes they keep them around because, you know, it's easier to do that, but it's bad, and then we don't, because if we get rid of it, then we have to face this. Oh, my God, I I can't believe I let myself have that in my life for so long, and that's where forgiveness comes in. Self-love is forgiving yourself, right? Maybe your general practice is like, what do I need to forgive myself about? Right? So that you can use these tools together. And then limit self-criticism, and this is where I would encourage you to get a friend involved, and when you are being self-deprecating, which Gay Hendricks, who's episode 400 would say, in his book, The Big Leap, that self-deprecation is actually just part of you pulling like a bit as an upper limit problem, right? But if you are judging yourself or being hard on yourself and it's around people, then I need you to have someone in your life who's gonna go, okay, that's not helpful. We did this in Cambodia, like anytime someone apologize, I told this in another episode, not helpful, right? Not helpful until you can get to the point where you're going not helpful to yourself, right? It can take a village to get unravel the habits we have, right? So behavioral lifestyle tools that would be setting boundaries, you might have to actually just start saying no to everything until you can and then say yes later, because, like most, for the most part, you can say no to a lot of things and then change your mind. And so maybe it's that you have to come up with something in your notes, it's something that I had to do for a long time. Was like, in my notes, I had, like, three different ways to say no, that I could just copy and paste. Oh, it's amazing. I need to check my calendar. Oh, I think we have something going on that night. Let me, for right now it's a no, but I'll check, and if I can change I'll get back to you. Oh, my God, thank you for thinking of me, I feel so honored. I need to take a moment to take a look at my calendar and see if I can do that. Right? Though, all of those were easy for me to pretty much plug and play into almost any invitation anywhere. And then I could get like, the urgency and need for me to be responsive to people. I could solve that. But then it gave me it bought me some time to, Do I really want to go to that thing? Do I want to spend time with those people? Right? No, is a complete sentence, by the way, and so, but it can feel hard, especially if you're not used to it. And the other thing is, like, when you are setting boundaries, you might have to tell people hey, like we had Shari Teigman on the on the podcast coming up, and it's possible it already came out, might come out after this. But this, but I really encourage you to listen to that episode if you haven't, if it's been already out, and if you haven't, then listen to it maybe a couple of times. But she gives some great tips about how to tell people. You know, Hey, before, I was okay with this, and I'm not now, and so it is okay to have been okay with something before and not now, and it might mean addressing that with people who it's not now for, but it's not an attack on them, and it's not that they're an asshole. It's just that you no longer are able to be available in that way, right? And then the thing is, when we set boundaries, we just have to enforce them, and it's not easy. But again, write down different ways. Like, okay, if you know someone's going to break a boundary or asked to do something at a different time that you didn't want them to do, have a pre written thing out. Ask the AI to help you. Hey, my friend wants to change this thing. I don't want to be up at that time. Like, how can I write this thing? It will write it for you. Copy and paste it right until you can figure out how to say, no. You know, oftentimes people don't care. We overthink things. Oh my gosh. I watched this, like, really funny reel where, like, was based on, like, horoscope signs. And like, this one guy was, like, these three signs, and the person was like, you know, I thought you were gonna come over. And then he's like, I you thought I was gonna come over? Like, he's reacting to it as a like, Aquarian, Scorpio, whatever another person is, like, three other things, and it's just like, come on over. Like, it was just really, I wish I'm not doing a great job explaining it, but like most people, we're reading it with this negative, oh my God. I'm gonna let them down when I send this, and they're going, they're, you know, it's like, Oh, no big deal, right? Not a big deal. It's okay, yeah, and it's possible that in setting boundaries, you do lose some relationships in that way. And I would just say, like it probably wasn't the most healthy relationship for you in the first place, because if loving yourself means they can't be in your life, then then it's possible it's just a relationship out to expire, right? Or, if you really want the relationship to stay, you will definitely want to listen to Barb Betts episode about how to create a relationship in a way that works with them, right, that also works with you, which is like, what else can you relate on if this thing that you have a boundary on is no longer relatable? Yeah? Lesley Logan 13:56  Self-care routines. You know, a big fan of the self-care routine, but you need to have self-care routines. And self-care routines do need to be a daily, weekly thing. Self-care is not a reward. Self-care is a need. It's a need. All right? This one, of course, I love. This tool is amazing. Celebrate achievements. You guys need to email me your achievements in the beitpod.com/questions and achievements can be I got out of bed today. Achievements can be I finally signed up for that class I've been wanting to go to. Achievements can be, like, I tried a new hobby. They can be I told a friend, no. There's so many things. They can also be big, like I got a promotion. There are so many different types of achievements, but you have to celebrate them. It's part of self-love. If you're never celebrating the things you did do, it's going to start to feel like everything you do all these things for all these people, and there's like, what's the point? Well, the point is like celebrating the moments in between the things that like, oh, wow, look what I did, right? You got to celebrate that. Lesley Logan 14:52  Spending time alone. Oh, my God, this is not a problem for me. I love this. But self love is also like taking time to get to know yourself and be alone with yourself. Often, and if you have a hard time with that, I highly recommend like figuring out what's going on. You don't have to be an introvert. You can still get energy from people, but being able to be alone with yourself is a sign you've got a lot of self-love. You love being with you. Lesley Logan 15:15  Surround yourself with positivity. So this is it's possible, like I went through a time in 2020 where, like, people were just, oh, we all did, right? And people were just being really negative, and the calls were just often really negative. And I just said, like, you know, right now I'm available to be a friend on these topics, but not that one. And that pissed some people off, and I haven't talked to them, and I'm sad about that, like that, I don't take that lightly at all. But also, I needed a different way of a friendship at that time, and that is okay, and I'm allowed to need that, and they are allowed to have needed a friend who needed to bitch with them, and that's okay, right? But loving yourself is truly making sure that you are around people who not just support you but uplift you and like you feel good after you leave, right? If you're around people that it just feels like after you leave, you feel like the energy sucked out. It's time to have some self-love and put some boundaries in place. Yeah? And then clear your space. So this is not an action item for any of you who use clearing your space as a reason why you do not take care of yourself. But if you're like Lesley, I do all these things and I still don't feel like I have it, maybe there is too much clutter and it's affecting your brain, being able to see all the possibilities that you're doing and have love for yourself. There's also some suggestions for self-love that having some goal oriented tools, so like making sure you're setting realistic goals as a part of your self-love. I see a lot of people that we coach set some unrealistic goals, then not hit those goals and then judge themself. So it might be time to have some realistic goals. And that doesn't mean you lower your standards, or you lower your ability to dream, but maybe it's just about making like smaller stepping stones of a major goal so that you can work towards actually accomplishing that, and then you have to celebrate that you did it, right? Part of self-love is just also knowing what your strengths are. I'm very clear on what my strengths are and are not, and loving myself means saying no to things that are I know I'm going to do a terrible job. I'm going to feel bad about how you did it. Yes, that means I have to hire people, and I have to ask for help, and I have to ask for support, but I can lean so much into my strengths, and I have more energy after the afterwards because of it. So we've had several guests on this, on the Be It Pod who who do strength testing. And I really, highly, highly recommend checking out the couple guests we've had on that and just going through and getting help on identify what your strengths are, right, and then embracing creativity. So you know that could be hobbies, that could be just an outlet you do. It could just be like, maybe you go take an artist class, maybe go take a stone carving class. Like, find something. But finding some way to be creative is often a really great way to not just practice compassion and kindness, but also to get to know yourself. You know, can be kind of meditative, and we have to be mindful in a creative space. Lesley Logan 18:03  So the other things I will just say is we have a couple more categories that I want to explore, emotional, mental self-love, and that is going to include the boundaries and the self-compassion and the forgiving yourself and then challenging negative talk and spending time reflecting. And this one is we haven't talked about this yet, not comparing. You know, they say comparison is the thief of joy. Comparison is okay if it means that you're able to see what you want and you don't want in your life, but then you have to be curious, right? So I love that the emotional self and mental self love tools are very similar to all the other types of tools we've had, because sometimes we can have self-love in some areas and not in other areas. And so hopefully that helps you. You know, self-love is also taking care of the physical body that you have, and that is going to be the movement rituals you have and the movement practices you have, and but also self-love is honoring your body. Now, I just was talking with this girl that I used to teach, and she was asking questions, and I was like, you know, I'm so grateful that people have discovered these studies that show that as women, if we honor our cycles and we move within them, we can be stronger, faster, better, right? And so listening to your body is self-love. So sometimes I hear people are hard on themselves for not going and going for a run or not going and lifting as hard that week because they needed to do more yoga, that's listening to your body you are practicing self-love. Don't be so hard on yourself, right? So do you see how like we tend to do something as self-love, and then we tend to be harsh to ourselves, which negates the self-love that we did. So honoring your body, and then I would celebrate that as an achievement. And then something else you can think about is, and that's this really cool thing that I discovered, if you were truly struggling with, like, how do I love myself? You know, there's the idea of, like, how do you like to give love? Do you like to give loves and word of affirmations? Do you like to give love in the form of physical gifts? Do you like to give love in the form of touch or quality time or acts of service, you know, like the five love languages, and I know those are debunked a bit in a bit, but also, like they're applicable, right? Instead of thinking about like partnering up with people, think of like, how do you like to give love and then give yourself that in return? So if you love to tell people things about that fall into words of affirmation, then it's time for you to do words of affirmation towards you. If you love to give people physical gifts, then give yourself some physical gifts. If you love touch, then go get yourself a massage, right? Like if you love quality time, spend some quality time with yourself. If you love to do things for people, do things for you. So try that out in your effort to make self-love part of your daily life. So I think it's just there's some really great things to that. If you listen to me on that and you're like, I need some more ideas. Definitely reach out to Be It Pod. I can help you with that. I've got some I got some extra tools under here, but I just wanted I don't want to overwhelm you with tools. I feel like that is, is the thing that these the listeners that I tend to attract, like, give me everything. I'm going to try 17 things at once. I just want you to try, like, one thing at a time, because I want self-love to be a thing that you can be it till you see, right? Lesley Logan 21:04  But I will put this in the show notes. There are a bunch of mantras. I have 58 mantras here for self-love, and I'm going to make sure my team has it for the show notes. And here's a few of them that just stood out to me as I read through. I deserve love just as I am. I'm a beacon of self-love. I choose to see the beauty within me. Every cell in my body is infused with love. I'm worthy of sel- care and self-love. I believe in myself fully. I deserve to be happy. And that's that's hopefully what this does, because, like, look, I love doing all the interviews, but I also think that information without integration is constipation. That's what I had a coach say to me once, so all the tools in the world, all the tips and advice don't work if you don't first love you, right? They just become more things. Oh, I promised you guys. I promised you guys some tools from you guys. So these are real people who have real tools for self-love, okay? Pilates, education and gratitude towards myself, not just the universe, for the good things I made happen. Brook Siler, Pilates, Self-love tools, equal, baths, learning new skills. She's doing tennis, not escaping stress with alcohol. Beautiful. And then Pilates Physio Essay, that's Sonia. Tools, booking in sessions that are not allowed to be moved, whether it's on my own workout or paid, it's in. Heidi Malone said, I schedule at least one evening a week to relax after work I read or I watch a comfort show. These are beautiful, beautiful. So do you see how those reflect all the different tools that were suggested? The time with the self, the movement, the creativity, right, the gratitude practice, celebrating achievements, self-care movement, you are so loved by so many people. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:55  Welcome back to the Be It Till You See It interview recap where my co-host in life, Brad, and I are going to dig into the flourishing convo I have with Danielle Droitsch in our last episode. She's a fucking badass.Brad Crowell 1:13  She's pretty amazing. I really enjoyed that conversation. Lesley Logan 1:15  I mean, I don't even know how, she's been listening to our pod for a while. Then she pitched herself. We talked to her. You came up and talked to her. I want to be friends with her. I wish she lived closer. She's doing great work. And also, like, I don't even know how she did what she did for a living, because, like, as we talked about in the podcast, you're an environmental attorney, which means you're constantly fighting for the environment, and the environment is constantly getting hotter. Brad Crowell 1:38  I didn't know she was an environmental attorney. Lesley Logan 1:38  I'm pretty sure. Brad Crowell 1:38  No, she just described her work as an attorney, but it's possible you guys have that you talked to her beforehand. Lesley Logan 1:50  Yeah, no, she was an environment policy world attorney, like she was a fucking badass in DC. And I remember talking to her offline, like, Oh my God. So every day you're trying to say, the Earth is hot. I'm fighting for the earth. And every day they're like, you know, like, it's just, I don't know, like, that would be a hard that'd be a long hard, but we need people like her in this world. Brad Crowell 2:13  Well, she quit, so.Lesley Logan 2:17  She still fights for it. She still does her she still does her work. She didn't quit. Brad, what makes it sound like she gave up? She did not, you know it.Brad Crowell 2:31  No, she has moved on to bigger and better task. Lesley Logan 2:33  She had to leave DC for other reasons, and it's pretty hard to fight for the environment on a world level outside of DC. So anyways, she's still badass. Brad Crowell 2:43  Yeah. Actually, she said she's she's bringing a little bit of liberal vibes to Salt Lake City, so. Lesley Logan 2:49  We love that. You know, it's really because we have a friend who's a federal defense attorney, and I, like, think about her going to work every day, right? And, like, the federal defense attorneys, like, what's the average win? It's like 2% or something like that. And she's like 4% and that's like, fucking badass, right? And you're just like, and she's like, fighting. Brad Crowell 3:11  I think she had six. Lesley Logan 3:05  I think she had six, you're right. Yeah, she got, like, defense attorney of the year. Hi, Amelia. Anyways, she like, I think about people like that, and Danielle and like these other people like, talk about having to figure out a different way of understanding how to celebrate your wins, because, like, it could take years to move, to get a date, for something to be heard. Years, and we're over here being it until we see it, going, oh, that thing didn't happen yesterday. I had to wait six months.Brad Crowell 3:35  Yeah, it's true. I mean, especially with environmental law. I mean, you could be working on something for, you know, five to 10 years before it actually comes together, so.Lesley Logan 3:43  Yeah, well, we'll get into her in a second. Hold on. Just so you're clear, I actually have no idea what day Brad chooses until we open up the script, unless I choose a day. And so I have no idea what I'm about to read. And I feel like it's gonna be weird, because today is November 6th 2025 and it's Marooned Without A Compass Day, which would, is the story of my life, I think I would be marooned without a compass for sure. If I had my phone, and it was working, we'd be okay, but truth be told, I don't have a charger ever on me, which means my compass would be leaving us quickly. This day is celebrated annually to put a spotlight on the direction of our lives or the lack of it. Oh, well, that's interesting. On this day, we ask ourselves the hard question, where is my life going? Am I happy? In a rather literal sense, maroon means being trapped alone in a place, yeah. But in a mindful sense, it describes the ecstatic gloom and thank you, Brad for highlighting. I see ecstatic gloom is a paradoxical or oxymoronic phrase that describes the feeling that being simultaneously overwhelmed with happiness and sadness is not a standard English idiom, but a descriptive pairing of two contradictory emotions, wonderful. I feel like ecstatic gloom is how I live every day in this administration. That comes with being lost in our life.Brad Crowell 5:04  So ecstatic gloom. So in a rather little literal sense, marooned means being trapped alone in a place, but in a mindful sense, that describes the ecstatic gloom that comes from being lost in our own life. Lives, right? So. Lesley Logan 5:07  Well, this is people who are not being it until we see it, Brad. Brad Crowell 5:11  That's what I'm saying. Lesley Logan 5:13  Our listeners do not mean marooned without a compass. Brad Crowell 5:21  That's why today is exactly the right day to celebrate. Oh, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay. Today is all about climbing up from the rock bottom of our lives and becoming our own compass. But that's what we do here every single day at the Be It Pod. So, you know, I thought this was a great day, because what this actually really made me think about was the reset button that Covid was, you know.Lesley Logan 5:47  Yeah if people took advantage of it, which I feel like.Brad Crowell 5:49  I mean, whether or not you took advantage of it, it became a very real it was a mirror to our own lives. Each and every one of us had this, this really, I'm sure we all had the internal conversation, this ecstatic gloom of like, oh, this is what my life is. Is this what I want my life to be? (inaudible)Lesley Logan 5:49  And oh, my God, I get to lay on the couch. That's the ecstatic part. You have to have ecstatic part of the gloom.Brad Crowell 6:13  Yeah. I mean, I don't, I don't know how many people like I think the I think there was this weird perception that we can learn another language, but that never happened for us. Lesley Logan 6:21  People did make sourdough, Brad, not us, we weren't those people. Brad Crowell 6:25  We were not those people, but people did make sourdough. Lesley Logan 6:28  Our dog got walked fucking 12 fucking miles a day. That's right.Brad Crowell 6:33  But, but I, you know, I think that, you know, we're already five years past Covid, and I think this is a good time to check in and be like, Hey, I had this realization back then. You know, I made changes in my life, the changes that I made. Am I happy with them still? So, yeah. So today is Marooned Without A Compass Day. Lesley Logan 6:55  Yeah, but you don't have to go on an island and get a volleyball and name it Wilson. You can just use Hey, I just studied the Hermit card today. That was my hermit and my Tarot reading, because my new hobby, okay, and it's about taking time to be alone and do some self-reflection and some inner like looking in your inner wisdom. Brad Crowell 7:13  How poignant. Lesley Logan 7:14  How poignant. But not well, because this is on November 6th, and I'm doing it today, but it is poignant that we're recording this today, and one of the things you have to ask yourself is, like, what, what does like self-reflection look like to you? How do you understand what your inner guidance is? And like, I really do think that a lot of us are very busy, and even some of us are really good at time by ourselves and even time with our self-care. But how often are we actually using our inner wisdom versus our outer wisdom? And this is something I work with, like, eLevate members when they're like, Okay, so what next? And I'm like, You got to go inside and, like, juice out what you learned already. Brad Crowell 7:52  Gotta go inside. Lesley Logan 7:53  Anyways. Well, that's cool. Like it. I like a good compass. I don't know how to use one, but I think about it all the time. Brad Crowell 8:01  It's okay. Lesley Logan 8:03  Don't download the free compass on your phone, because there is already a compass on your phone. Brad Crowell 8:08  Yeah, there's already a compass. You don't need to get another app. Lesley Logan 8:12  You actually, that's and that is also poignant, you already have a compass. It's already inside you. What's the question? Brad Crowell 12:12  Let's do it. All right. So this is regarding Swan Dive on the Wunda Chair @DeniseBraunStargazer on YouTube asks, What spring tension would you recommend for this movement tips for swan dive on the Wunda Chair on an Exo chair. So an EXO ChairLesley Logan 12:27  So, an EXO chair is still a Wunda chair. Here, it's, I appreciate that it has its own name, because it is different than a traditional Wunda Chair. But the thing that makes it different is the angle of the pedal, the weight of the chair. I'm sure Ken will tell me a bunch of other things that are different. And also, but to the eye and to the use, and also, the cactus thing on the back has four springs. But they have other things that have four four hooks, I should say, two springs, four hooks. So if you're using my flash cards, you'll see that there's a how to use this deck card, and that card actually will tell you that on a chair that has four hooks, so that'd be an Exo chair or anything else that has four hooks. I ignore the fourth hook on an Exo chair unless you absolutely need it. And the person who edits our flash cards actually only has an Exo chair, so she edited these cards with the Exo chair in mind, so without seeing you do The Swan, my guess is you should start with one spring on a two. So the cactus on an Exo chair has numbers one spring on the two. Now that being said, you could be fun sized and you need a one. You could be in a more of a body abundance or chest abundance bodies. You have a little bit more weight going on the pedal. So then you might need a three. You might be super advanced and only need a one. You might be a beginner and need a three. So the thing about the Wunda Chair that people don't understand this goes with EXO Chair as well, is that the springs are like pirate rules guidelines get to choose them, do you remember what was the line in the Pirate movie? Their pirate rules are just like thoughts, things to do. You know the line of the movie. Brad Crowell 14:07  What are you talking about? Lesley Logan 14:08  Johnny Depp's movie of the Pirates. They're like guidelines. Everyone is knows what I'm talking about. if they watched this movie, I'm gonna look it up later. Anyways, on the Chair. So another example on a Wunda Chair is on the flash cards. I say that a pull up is often done on a one, one spring on a one and one spring on a three. That would be (inaudible).Brad Crowell 14:30  Okay it's about the pirate rules, they'e more like guidelines. Lesley Logan 14:31  Correct. That's how the Wunda Chair.Brad Crowell 14:31  Parlay, I think it's parlay. Lesley Logan 14:33  Parlay, parlay. So that's exactly how a Wunda Chair works in an Exo chair. So if we ignore the fourth hook on the Exo chair, then you have a one, two and a three, or what we'll often say in classical Pilates, a top and a bottom. One is a bottom and a three is a top, and then a middle spring is a two. So if the traditional parlay on a pull up is a top and a bottom, so a Wunda, three on an Exo chair, that would be the guideline. However, right now I'm doing pull up on a one top. That's pretty impressive, Brad, you should be impressed. It's impressive.Brad Crowell 15:08  I'm so impressed right now, it's one on top. Lesley Logan 15:11  And then the other thing to go off of, guys is, is the spring working with you, meaning the spring should never be pushing you around, nor you bossing it around. It's your dance partner. So today it might be a two. Tomorrow might be a three. I know, this is annoying because you just want to know, but that means you're trying to be a perfectionist and not someone who is using their inner compass. That's all I have to say about that. Danielle spent decades as a lawyer in the environmental policy world. Oh, that's where we learned it, leading teams and. Lesley Logan 16:05  Leaving it. Leaving it. Brad Crowell 16:07  Leading teams and directing big projects. But after 25 years, she hit a wall and realized the traditional path of titles and skills was not bringing her fulfillment. That turning point led her into coaching, where she now helps mid to senior leaders uncover their superpowers, the natural strengths that create meaning, energy and impact. Instead of piling on more certifications or chasing someone else's version of success, she shows people how to tap into what already is inside of them. Lesley Logan 16:35  Sounds like a lot of our listeners need to hear that because I remember Erika Quest and I did a whole wealthy mindset weekend about like imposter syndrome. And one of the things, sign of you imposter syndrome is that you continually acquire more certifications. And look, I think Danielle would agree with me, learning is cool. You got to keep learning. But if you keep thinking that the next certification is going to make you happy, that is the wrong motivation. So she defined superpowers as your innate ability to create impact. I love that. Your innate ability to create impact. You guys, if you aren't hearing a theme about today, it is, are you using your inner compass? Are you taking time to understand yourself? Are you talking yourself up? She states that these are often hidden to you, and unless you've gone through the exercise of actually figuring out your superpowers, you do not likely know them. This is so true. I think when we coach people, the often thing is like, oh, my god, that's amazing, right? We talk about you're the only person who can do what you do the way you do it. And people like, it's come so easy to me, it's like, yeah, it comes not easy to everyone else, like, no one else gets it. And we do need a mirror. We need some way. We need a Danielle to tell us, like, oh, this is the thing that you do really well. Also it's often the thing that people keep asking you questions about, which is why I should go into being a skincare influencer.Brad Crowell 18:00  The thing that I thought was really neat about her talking about your innate abilities is she said people will often describe their quote, unquote superpowers to her, and she would disagree with them, right? So they're, they're like, you know, I'm really good at I don't know whatever organizing or they think it always revolves around work. I think that's ultimately what her point was, that they always apply it around work. And she's saying that's not necessarily the case. For example, for her, she said, of course, I was a competent attorney, but what I was really doing around the office was making sure that everybody was feeling part of the team, feeling included, and being, you know, like, encouraging and uplifting. And she said, Actually, I never pegged that as my superpower until way after I was always just, like, actually, she said she literally thought it was her weakness. I'm being too kind. I'm so kind. I need to be less kind. I need to be more more, ruthless, you know. And she said that's because I was applying my kindness to my execution of my job. But I was, I was imagining that that's a weakness, when really it was my strength, you know. And so it was really, it was really interesting. And she said they're often hidden to you and but she's she did talk a lot about energy and what, what makes you, what feeds you, what lights you up.Lesley Logan 19:26  She said a way to figure it out is you need to follow the energy, because when engaging activities align with what your superpowers, the time flies by. So episode 400 Your Genius Zone. Alternatively, tasks that are draining to you indicate a lack of alignment. If we go back to Kareen Walsh and her, like, Drain Joy list, right? Like so and I think what happens is we're all like, Oh my God, I need to get better at this. Like, I would like, often if you have like, I need to be more detailed, and I need to work on being more detailed. But being more detailed was, like, nailed on a chalkboard because I'm like, well, how much more detailed do I need to be? Like, this seems quite obvious to me. No, I'm just not a detailed person, period. Guess why? Everyone on the team has detailed in their fucking strengths? Because I don't. I don't have it. That was my elbow. If you heard that on the podcast. Anyways, it's fine, don't worry. Didn't hit a funny bone. But I just really like what she said about that. I think it's a great way to think about things. And I also love that she shared what she thought, that she thought her strength was a weakness, like I think, I think that's very relatable. What did you love?Brad Crowell 20:31  Just for those of you who are wondering, Kareen's episode was number 27 and she had a follow up episode, which was episode 397, so. Lesley Logan 20:42  Whoa, already that many episodes behind? (inaudible) I feel like that just happened. Okay. Well, here we are. You know what? I'm clearly in my my fucking like. Brad Crowell 20:56  You're detailing it away here, babe. Lesley Logan 20:58  No, I'm not detailing anymore, because we added those FYFs, so I don't know what the numbers are anyway, but I just want to say I'm clearly following my energy, because time is flying by. Brad Crowell 21:07  Flying by. What I really loved is when she was talking about, we have this. I mean, all right, y'all have heard me talk about strengths finders and CliftonStrengths and all that stuff like, for years. Lesley Logan 21:20  For years. Brad Crowell 21:21  For years. But she said we have this societally reinforced tendency to focus on our weaknesses. Lesley Logan 21:29  Oh, my whole, my ex's biggest thing, and we talked about this on the podcast that we used to do about dating, my ex's biggest thing is, like, you're not this, you're not this, you're not this. And I'm like, okay, I got to be one of those things. And no, no one liked me for those things. So here we are.Brad Crowell 21:46  Yeah, also, that's so annoying. I mean, you know, like, I think about it. And she was laughing because she said, we have kids. And the kids, you know, if they came home from school with a D, I would be like, you need to be doing better, right? Even if they even if they were like, well, that's not my strength, she still would say, no, you need to do better. Because I think that there's a time and a place for in in the typical world of learning. The way that we educate people here in the United States, you know, it's based on test results. And now that may be changing over time, but our generation that was all that mattered was the grade at the end of it. So if you didn't get a grade, then you did not pass, right? And so this pass-fail concept, you know, it drives us to thinking that that applies in life, right? It applies at our job, it applies in our personal lives. And that's not actually the way that it functions in the rest of the world, education is different than the rest of the world, right? And so what we do, though, is, because that's how we were taught, we take that and we apply it. And so we think that we need to be better. We just need to be better at all the things, even if that's not the thing we should be focusing on. Lesley Logan 22:54  All the things. All the time. Brad Crowell 22:54  Right? And so what do we do? We get in our job, and we're like, wow, I'm really not good at numbers. I guess I need to be better at numbers. So I'll go take a course at numbers, and then you end up hating it, and you're like, oh, I hate everything I'm doing now because I just have to do numbers, you know? And instead, if we were focusing or leaning into our strengths, and this is what Danielle was saying, you know, it will, it'll change our attitude around our it'll change our our vigor, our excitement, our our mindset completely around the thing that we're doing, and probably give us a whole lot more joy. She advised paying attention to what energizes you, right? And you know, there are cases where you have to, you know, do something that you don't want to do, but eventually you want to outsource those kinds of things, you know? And we've talke about. Lesley Logan 23:40  Also, we've done this on the retreat, if you want to know why you should come on the retreat, sometimes people are doing things that they think they have to do. Brad Crowell 23:49  That's, yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying. Lesley Logan 23:52  And like you and and outsourcing, like people like outsourcing can be expensive. Sometimes you can just delete it. You don't even have to do it. We live in a world with some amazing technology, robots, subscriptions, like you. If you hate the grocery store, you can put things on auto ship. You just can.Brad Crowell 24:10  Yeah, that's, that's exactly, that's exactly right. Like, what if you hate grocery shopping? Great. Put it on repeat. You don't have to actually go do any of that. You know, the way that we live today, it's amazing. But anyway, you know, she said, what energizes you often correlates with the things that you're really good at, and you know it gives you joy. And you know that will change your excitement about life. You know, around the horn, so.Lesley Logan 24:38  So in Pilates, Jay always told us, like, whatever you don't like, you have to do twice, because like your body, your body needs it. This is very different than like, how you do work and and your strengths, right? So when it comes to like, balancing your balances. And today, this is, I don't know if that has anything to do with this episode, but I want to share this with you. Okay, so today we had to do. frog in in class, frog, which is your fucking favorite, and I hate everything everything about it. I hate everything about it. And I don't think we were in frog one minute, but it felt like 17 years. But when we were in pigeon, which probably is only one minute, if I just was like, I think we're in pigeon, for like, three minutes, it went by so it just flew by, because I love pigeon so much, and I just like, I'm like, pigeon feels so good in my body, but frog doesn't feel good at all. And if I could avoid, if I was in charge, we would never frog.Brad Crowell 25:37  We would never frog. If Lesley was in charge we would never frog. Lesley Logan 25:41  But I did tell Anthony, I said, I said, you know how we don't like what we need? And he said, yeah, I'm like, I really hate that. Anyways, you got to (inaudible) energizes you, because what doesn't energize me is frog and yoga. Brad Crowell 26:00  Well, maybe in your body, it's kind of like educating. You need to be balancing things out, or your body will break. Lesley Logan 26:05  Yeah, I don't think you should. Here's the thing, because there's a woman named Joanna who I'm trying to get on the pod guys, I really am. She's got the Unlearn IG and we're close. We got close. We got we're getting closer. Stay tuned on that. But she said in her TED talk, she said, like, kids should fail at things because they need to learn how to fail, right? Like, on a low level thing, however, like, there's a difference between not trying and like not understanding and like not being a skill. And I do agree, like, we don't want kids to not know how to balance their budget, so like, you got to learn how to add and subtract. But like, also, I think what happens is we put up, like you said already, we put this pressure you that has to be your focus, as opposed to like, just get like, decent at it, and that way you can enjoy the English class that you love, or the Shakespeare class that you love, or whatever it is. Yeah, I'm in. It makes sense in my brain, Brad.Brad Crowell 27:05  Great, I love it. Okay, stick around. We'll be right back. We're going to dig into those Be It Actions that we got from Danielle Droitsch. Brad Crowell 27:05  All right, let's talk about those Be It Action Items. What bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action items can we take away from your convo with Danielle Droitsch? I'm gonna jump in right away. She emphasized that you don't need your entire day to be quote, unquote fulfilling. Lesley Logan 27:27  I agree. Brad Crowell 27:28  This is interesting, right? You don't need your entire day to be fulfilling. Even a relatively small portion dedicated to your strengths can significantly increase your job satisfaction. What was really interesting is she is backing this up with statistics. It wasn't just like this, this like thing that she's winging it here. She said, hey, observe for the last for at least one week, observe what activities give you energy. Aim to dedicate at least 20% of your day or your week to these energizing superpowers. Act these superpower activities to significantly boost fulfillment. So. Lesley Logan 28:03  2% of your day is 30 minutes. What's 20% of your day? How many hours? How many?Brad Crowell 28:08  Well, we're hold on 20 so 20% of eight hours would be one and a half hours. So if you were like in the zone as it were, for an hour and a half.Lesley Logan 28:20  You're in your superpower for an hour and a half a day. Brad Crowell 28:23  A day. Lesley Logan 28:23  But you don't have to do it all at once. You could do it, but. Brad Crowell 28:26  No, but probably, if you're like, if time has disappeared, you've cranked through an hour and a half.Lesley Logan 28:31  And some of your strength. Yeah, yeah. It's probably true. But also, just for my perfectionist listening, it's okay. It's gonna probably be okay if it's 30 minutes in the morning, 30 minutes in the afternoon, 30.Brad Crowell 28:40  It might be, it might be teaching time for you, because that's when things like, you know, go and that's okay, and that's good, yeah, you know, like when I was working for somebody else. And even now, what I often like to do is I sit down for, you know, a work block in my head. I'm like, okay, this will be my morning work block before I get up and go to lunch or whatever. And I usually try to give myself, like a three hour, like two to three hour like hard work block. And my hope is that in that time I do hit the zone, I'm in that zone, you know. And if I can do two a day of these work blocks, I have had an effective day. Now, what often happens for me is I'll do probably one in the late morning, and then I'll do another one at like, nine o'clock at night,you know or.Brad Crowell 28:40  You feel like you're in your strength to Danielle's point, not just like those. You feel like you're.Brad Crowell 28:57  Well, usually when you're in the zone, as it were. Lesley Logan 28:57  Time is just flying by. Brad Crowell 28:57  Yeah, you're doing you're using your strength, because time is going and you're not realizing it, and you know it's okay. You're, you know, you're, you're effectively using your superpower.Brad Crowell 28:57  When I'm doing Pilates, time flies by. Oh, my God, it flies by. I looked at the clock. It was like 44 minutes. I was like, whoa, where did the hour ago? Brad Crowell 29:49  You're just gonna do Pilates all day, every day?Lesley Logan 29:50  Apparently, only do an hour and a half, then I'd like, I'm gonna significantly save my life. I'm just saying. Anyway, mine.Brad Crowell 29:58  I don't think that's what I was saying, but we'll go with it.Lesley Logan 30:00  That's my takeaway, because she said, just follow your energy. That's where your superpower is lived. Brad Crowell 30:01  We're not talking about work. We're not talking about play, but. Lesley Logan 30:09  My job is Pilates. Brad Crowell 30:11  Yeah, but the point is teaching. That's not talking about doing.Lesley Logan 30:16  I understand, I understand. I understand. Brad Crowell 30:18  Okay, just making sure that we're clear. Lesley Logan 30:20  We're clear. I am going to spend more time with myself. She explained that confidence also doesn't come from faking it. Duh. That's why we call it the Be It Till You See It podcast. That's why she's on. That's why she's on. But in activating what is true about you, and it's not built through the mindset, rather, is built through action and failure and success and getting right back up. So you're gonna you're gonna fail, you're gonna reflect, you're gonna correct, and you're gonna continue. That's right to do, and you're gonna get better at it. You don't have to do it perfectly the first time. Brad Crowell 30:52  Yeah, you do not. Lesley Logan 30:53  So follow your energy. And if you're like, oh, that was the wrong energy, great. You now, now tomorrow, you won't follow that one. You have your new inner compass that's gonna tell you the right direction. I'm Lesley Logan.Brad Crowell 31:03  Well before we sign off, I actually just got off a coaching call with a client, and we were talking about rolling out a program, and she said, I just don't think I have she said, what lights me up is educating educators. So she likes to teach teachers. We're talking about Pilates here. And she said, I have my own clients, and I do really enjoy teaching them, but what really lights me up is teaching teachers. She said, the problem I have is that I I can't stop teaching to take on more educating teachers. And she said she's feeling really stuck. And what she said in her like offhand, she was like, and to do like, you know, I got to roll it out, and it's got to be perfect, and I got to do this thing, and I got to do that. And I was like, hold up. Hold up. You know and we had a conversation about this idea of introducing a new product or introducing a new service, and it having to be perfect. I said it has taken us, for our retreats, for example, the very first retreat, I worked on it for a year, I put my my heart and soul into organizing this thing, right. And I was like, we got this and we went and we executed it. And afterwards, we were like, we already have things we want to change. In fact, we did not really totally lock in the flow of events, the schedule of this retreat for like, 10 retreats. It was maybe after the eighth or 10th retreat where we were, like, we're done swapping days around. We've decided these are the days of things running. These are when lunches should be. These are the activity blocks. This is the free time blocks, like we. Lesley Logan 32:42  They were, by the way, they're all amazing. We just, we. Brad Crowell 32:44  That's not, not, not what I'm saying. Each experience was different, but afterwards, we were like, we want to make another change. We want to make another change. We we were all really tired after this one experience because we pushed it too hard. Okay, how do we tweak it? Lesley Logan 32:58  I also got rid of February because we realized we just love October.Brad Crowell 33:00  Whatever the point is, we, it wasn't until us, having done the experience, like, almost 10 times, that we were like, oh my God, it's amazing. We have it dialed in, right? So the point is, no perfectionism. Perfection is not real. It's never going to be real. It will never be perfect. We will always have something that we want to adjust after the fact.Lesley Logan 33:22  Yes, always. That's why, in the show, we say, take messy action. Make messy action.
